The Gödel Universe as a Superconductor

Material science and engineering have benefited from the use of geometric and topological tools. A material medium can mimic effective gravitational fields while spacetime metrics serve as geometric models of physical media. Although analog models of optical, acoustic, and viscous media in curved spacetimes are well established, none have yet captured the hallmark constitutive properties of superconductors. In this work we show that the Gödel universe - an exact solution to Einstein's field equations - serves as the gravitational analog of a superconducting medium in its Meissner state.

The geometry of induced currents in two dimensional media

We present a framework that allows us to clearly identify the geometric features underlying the phenomenon of superconductivity in two dimensional materials. In particular, we show that any such medium whose response to an externally applied electromagnetic field is a geodesically flowing induced current, must be a superconductor. In this manner, we conclude that the underlying geometry of this type of media is that of a Lorentzian contact manifold. Moreover, we show that the macroscopic hallmark of their superconducting state is a purely topological condition equivalent to the geodesic nature of the induced current: the non-vanishing of its helicity.

Gravitational Waves from Thurston Geometries

It has been established that the famous three-dimensional Thurston geometries have four intrinsically Lorentzian analogs. We explore these spacetimes in three-dimensional general relativity nonminimally coupled to a scalar field together with electromagnetic matter. We find that three of these spacetimes support electromagnetic radiation, while, the other is partially sourced by a nonnull field and supports gravitational radiation. By addressing this problem we have also found a novel type of gravitational Cheshire effect.

The geometry of induced electromagnetic fields in moving media

In this manuscript we provide a fully geometric formulation for the induced electromagnetic fields and their corresponding constitutive relations in moving media. To this end, we present the reader with a brief geometric summary to show how vector calculus electromagnetic theory is embedded in the more general language of differential forms. Then, we consider the class of \emph{metric} constitutive relations describing the medium in which electromagnetic fields propagate. We explicitly obtain the components of the induced fields in a moving medium, as seen in the the lab \emph{rest} frame. This allows us to read the expressions for the permitivity, permeability and magnetoelectric matrices for the moving medium which, in turn, can be interpreted as a different physical material from the lab point of view

The zeroth law in quasi-homogeneous thermodynamics and black holes

Motivated by black holes thermodynamics, we consider the zeroth law of thermodynamics for systems whose entropy is a quasi-homogeneous function of the extensive variables. We show that the generalized Gibbs-Duhem identity and the Maxwell construction for phase coexistence based on the standard zeroth law are incompatible in this case. We argue that the generalized Gibbs-Duhem identity suggests a revision of the zeroth law which in turns permits to reconsider Maxwell's construction in analogy with the standard case. The physical feasibility of our proposal is considered in the particular case of black holes.

Thermodynamic optimization of a Penrose process: an engineers' approach to black hole thermodynamics

In this work we present a new view on the thermodynamics of black holes introducing effects of irreversibility by employing thermodynamic optimization and finite-time thermodynamics. These questions are of importance both in physics and in engineering, combining standard thermodynamics with optimal control theory in order to find optimal protocols and bounds for realistic processes without assuming anything about the microphysics involved. We find general bounds on the maximum work and the efficiency of thermodynamic processes involving black holes that can be derived exclusively from the knowledge of thermodynamic relations at equilibrium. Since these new bounds consider the finite duration of the processes, they are more realistic and stringent than their reversible counterparts. To illustrate our arguments, we consider in detail the thermodynamic optimization of a Penrose process, i.e. the problem of finding the least dissipative process extracting all the angular momentum from a Kerr black hole in finite time. We discuss the relevance of our results for real astrophysical phenomena, for the comparison with laboratory black holes analogues and for other theoretical aspects of black hole thermodynamics.

The conformal metric structure of Geometrothermodynamics

We present a thorough analysis on the invariance of the most widely used metrics in the Geometrothermodynamics (GTD) programme. We centre our attention in the invariance of the curvature of the space of equilibrium states under a change of fundamental representation. Assuming that the systems under consideration can be described by a fundamental relation which is a homogeneous function of a definite order, we demonstrate that such invariance is only compatible with total Legendre transformations in the present form of the programme. We give the explicit form of a metric which is invariant under total Legendre transformations and whose induced metric produces a curvature which is independent of the fundamental representation. Finally, we study a generic system with two degrees of freedom and whose fundamental relation is homogeneous of order one.

A static axisymmetric exact solution of $f(R)$-gravity

We present an exact, axially symmetric, static, vacuum solution for $f(R)$ gravity in Weyl's canonical coordinates. We obtain a general explicit expression for the dependence of $df(R)/dR$ upon the $r$ and $z$ coordinates and then the corresponding explicit form of $f(R)$, which must be consistent with the field equations. We analyze in detail the modified Schwarzschild solution in prolate spheroidal coordinates. Finally, we study the curvature invariants and show that, in the case of $f(R)\neq R$, this solution corresponds to a naked singularity.
