Rock-salt SnS and SnSe: Native Topological Crystalline Insulators

Unlike time-reversal topological insulators, surface metallic states with Dirac cone dispersion in the recently discovered topological crystalline insulators (TCIs) are protected by crystal symmetry. To date, TCI behaviors have been observed in SnTe and the related alloys Pb$_{1-x}$Sn$_{x}$Se/Te, which incorporate heavy elements with large spin-orbit coupling (SOC). Here, by combining first-principles and {\it ab initio} tight-binding calculations, we report the formation of a TCI in the relatively lighter rock-salt SnS and SnSe. This TCI is characterized by an even number of Dirac cones at the high-symmetry (001), (110) and (111) surfaces, which are protected by the reflection symmetry with respect to the ($\bar{1}$10) mirror plane. We find that both SnS and SnSe have an intrinsically inverted band structure and the SOC is necessary only to open the bulk band gap. The bulk band gap evolution upon volume expansion reveals a topological transition from an ambient pressure TCI to a topologically trivial insulator. Our results indicate that the SOC alone is not sufficient to drive the topological transition.

Tuning the vertical location of helical surface states in topological insulator heterostructures via dual-proximity effects

In integrating topological insulators (TIs) with conventional materials, one crucial issue is how the topological surface states (TSS) will behave in such heterostructures. We use first-principles approaches to establish accurate tunability of the vertical location of the TSS via intriguing dual-proximity effects. By depositing a conventional insulator (CI) overlayer onto a TI substrate (Bi2Se3 or Bi2Te3), we demonstrate that, the TSS can float to the top of the CI film, or stay put at the CI/TI interface, or be pushed down deeper into the otherwise structurally homogeneous TI substrate. These contrasting behaviors imply a rich variety of possible quantum phase transitions in the hybrid systems, dictated by key material-specific properties of the CI. These discoveries lay the foundation for accurate manipulation of the real space properties of TSS in TI heterostructures of diverse technological significance.

Screened hybrid functional applied to 3d^0-->3d^8 transition-metal perovskites LaMO3 (M=Sc-Cu): influence of the exchange mixing parameter on the structural, electronic and magnetic properties

We assess the performance of the Heyd-Scuseria-Ernzerhof (HSE) screened hybrid density functional scheme applied to the perovskite family LaMO3 (M=Sc-Cu) and discuss the role of the mixing parameter alpha (which determines the fraction of exact Hartree-Fock exchange included in the density functional theory (DFT) exchange-correlation functional) on the structural, electronic, and magnetic properties. The physical complexity of this class of compounds, manifested by the largely varying electronic characters (band/Mott-Hubbard/charge-transfer insulators and metals), magnetic orderings, structural distortions (cooperative Jahn-Teller like instabilities), as well as by the strong competition between localization/delocalization effects associated with the gradual filling of the t_2g and e_g orbitals, symbolize a critical and challenging case for theory. Our results indicates that HSE is able to provide a consistent picture of the complex physical scenario encountered across the LaMO3 series and significantly improve the standard DFT description. The only exceptions are the correlated paramagnetic metals LaNiO3 and LaCuO3, which are found to be treated better within DFT. By fitting the ground state properties with respect to alpha we have constructed a set of 'optimum' values of alpha from LaScO3 to LaCuO3: it is found that the 'optimum' mixing parameter decreases with increasing filling of the d manifold (LaScO3: 0.25; LaTiO3 & LaVO3: 0.10-0.15; LaCrO3, LaMnO3, and LaFeO3: 0.15; LaCoO3: 0.05; LaNiO3 & LaCuO3: 0). This trend can be nicely correlated with the modulation of the screening and dielectric properties across the LaMO3 series, thus providing a physical justification to the empirical fitting procedure.

Dirac semimetal and topological phase transitions in A3Bi (A=Na, K, Rb)

The three-dimensional (3D) Dirac point, where two Weyl points overlap in momentum space, is usually unstable and hard to realize. Here we show, based on the first-principles calculations and effective model analysis, that crystalline $A_3$Bi ($A$=Na, K, Rb) are Dirac semimetals with bulk 3D Dirac points protected by crystal symmetry. They possess non-trivial Fermi arcs on the surfaces, and can be driven into various topologically distinct phases by explicit breaking of symmetries. Giant diamagnetism, linear quantum magnetoresistance, and quantum spin-Hall effect will be expected for such compounds.

Hardness of T-carbon: Density functional theory calculations

We revisit and interpret the mechanical properties of the recently proposed allotrope of carbon, T-carbon [Sheng \emph{et al.}, Phys. Rev. Lett., \textbf{106}, 155703 (2011)], using density functional theory in combination with different empirical hardness models. In contrast with the early estimation based on the Gao's model, which attributes to T-carbon an high Vickers hardness of 61 GPa comparable to that of superhard cubic boron nitride (\emph{c}-BN), we find that T-carbon is not a superhard material, since its Vickers hardenss does not exceed 10 GPa. Besides providing clear evidence for the absence of superhardenss in T-carbon, we discuss the physical reasons behind the failure of Gao's and Šim$\rm\mathring{u}$nek and Vackář's (SV) models in predicting the hardness of T-carbon, residing on their improper treatment of the highly anisotropic distribution of quasi-\emph{sp}$^3$-like C-C hybrids. A possible remedy to the Gao and SV models based on the concept of superatom is suggest, which indeed yields a Vickers hardness of about 8 GPa.

Strain driven onset of non-trivial topological insulating states in Zintl Sr$_2X$ compounds ($X$=Pb, Sn)

We explore the topological behavior of the binary Zintl phase of the alkaline earth metals based compounds Sr$_2$Pb and Sr$_2$Sn using both standard and hybrid density functional theory. It is found that Sr$_2$Pb lies on the verge of a topological instability which can be suitably tuned through the application of a small uniaxial expansion strain ($>$ 3%). The resulting non-trivial topologically insulating state display well-defined metallic states in the Sr$_{2}$Pb(010) surface, whose evolution is studied as a function of the film thickness.
