A residual a posteriori error estimate for the time-domain boundary element method

This article investigates residual a posteriori error estimates and adaptive mesh refinements for time-dependent boundary element methods for the wave equation. We obtain reliable estimates for Dirichlet and acoustic boundary conditions which hold for a large class of discretizations. Efficiency of the error estimate is shown for a natural discretization of low order. Numerical examples confirm the theoretical results. The resulting adaptive mesh refinement procedures in 3d recover the adaptive convergence rates known for elliptic problems.

A time-dependent FEM-BEM coupling method for fluid-structure interaction in 3d

We consider the well-posedness and a priori error estimates of a 3d FEM-BEM coupling method for fluid-structure interaction in the time domain. For an elastic body immersed in a fluid, the exterior linear wave equation for the fluid is reduced to an integral equation on the boundary involving the Poincaré-Steklov operator. The resulting problem is solved using a Galerkin boundary element method in the time domain, coupled to a finite element method for the Lamé equation inside the elastic body. Based on ideas from the time-independent coupling formulation, we obtain an a priori error estimate and discuss the implementation of the proposed method. Numerical experiments illustrate the performance of our scheme for model problems.

hp-version time domain boundary elements for the wave equation on quasi-uniform meshes

Solutions to the wave equation in the exterior of a polyhedral domain or a screen in $\mathbb{R}^3$ exhibit singular behavior from the edges and corners. We present quasi-optimal $hp$-explicit estimates for the approximation of the Dirichlet and Neumann traces of these solutions for uniform time steps and (globally) quasi-uniform meshes on the boundary. The results are applied to an $hp$-version of the time domain boundary element method. Numerical examples confirm the theoretical results for the Dirichlet problem both for screens and polyhedral domains.

Boundary elements with mesh refinements for the wave equation

The solution of the wave equation in a polyhedral domain in $\mathbb{R}^3$ admits an asymptotic singular expansion in a neighborhood of the corners and edges. In this article we formulate boundary and screen problems for the wave equation as equivalent boundary integral equations in time domain, study the regularity properties of their solutions and the numerical approximation. Guided by the theory for elliptic equations, graded meshes are shown to recover the optimal approximation rates known for smooth solutions. Numerical experiments illustrate the theory for screen problems. In particular, we discuss the Dirichlet and Neumann problems, as well as the Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator and applications to the sound emission of tires.

Time domain boundary elements for dynamic contact problems

This article considers a unilateral contact problem for the wave equation. The problem is reduced to a variational inequality for the Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator for the wave equation on the boundary, which is solved in a saddle point formulation using boundary elements in the time domain. As a model problem, also a variational inequality for the single layer operator is considered. A priori estimates are obtained for Galerkin approximations both to the variational inequality and the mixed formulation in the case of a flat contact area, where the existence of solutions to the continuous problem is known. Numerical experiments demonstrate the performance of the proposed mixed method. They indicate the stability and convergence beyond flat geometries.
