Proceedings of the 16th International Workshop on Non-Classical Models of Automata and Applications

The Sixteenth International Workshop on Non-Classical Models of Automata and Applications (NCMA 2026) was held in Rouen, France, on June 29 and 30, 2026, organized by the University of Rouen. The NCMA workshop series was established in 2009 as an annual event for researchers working on non-classical and classical models of automata, grammars or related devices. Such models are investigated both as theoretical models and as formal models for applications from different points of view.

Distinguishability Operations and Closures on Regular Languages

Given a regular language $L$, we study the language of words $\mathsf{D}(L)$, that distinguish between pairs of different left-quotients of $L$. We characterize this distinguishability operation, show that its iteration has always a fixed point, and we generalize this result to operations derived from closure operators and Boolean operators. We give an upper bound for the state complexity of the distinguishability operation, and prove its tightness. We show that the set of minimal words that can be used to distinguish between different left-quotients of a language $L$ has at most $n-1$ elements, where $n$ is the state complexity of $L$, and we also study the properties of its iteration. We generalize the results for the languages of words that distinguish between pairs of different right-quotients and two-sided quotients of a language $L$.

Simplifying Nondeterministic Finite Cover Automata

The concept of Deterministic Finite Cover Automata (DFCA) was introduced at WIA '98, as a more compact representation than Deterministic Finite Automata (DFA) for finite languages. In some cases representing a finite language, Nondeterministic Finite Automata (NFA) may significantly reduce the number of states used. The combined power of the succinctness of the representation of finite languages using both cover languages and non-determinism has been suggested, but never systematically studied. In the present paper, for nondeterministic finite cover automata (NFCA) and l-nondeterministic finite cover automaton (l-NFCA), we show that minimization can be as hard as minimizing NFAs for regular languages, even in the case of NFCAs using unary alphabets. Moreover, we show how we can adapt the methods used to reduce, or minimize the size of NFAs/DFCAs/l-DFCAs, for simplifying NFCAs/l-NFCAs.
