Elastic Scattering of $^6$He based on a Cluster Description

Elastic scattering observables (differential cross section and analyzing power) are calculated for the reaction $^6$He(p,p)$^6$He at projectile energies starting at 71 MeV/nucleon. The optical potential needed to describe the reaction is derived describing $^6$He in terms of a $^4$He-core and two neutrons. The Watson first order multiple scattering ansatz is extended to accommodate the internal dynamics of a composite cluster model for the $^6$He nucleus scattering from a nucleon projectile. The calculations are compared with the recent experiments at the projectile energy of 71 MeV/nucleon. In addition, differential cross sections and analyzing powers are calculated at selected higher energies.

Mini review of Poincaré invariant quantum theory

We review the construction and applications of exactly Poincaré invariant quantum mechanical models of few-degree of freedom systems. We discuss the construction of dynamical representations of the Poincaré group on few-particle Hilbert spaces, the relation to quantum field theory, the formulation of cluster properties, and practical considerations related to the construction of realistic interactions and the solution of the dynamical equations. Selected applications illustrate the utility of this approach.

Treatment of Two Nucleons in Three Dimensions

We extend a new treatment proposed for two-nucleon (2N) and three-nucleon (3N) bound states to 2N scattering. This technique takes momentum vectors as variables, thus, avoiding partial wave decomposition, and handles spin operators analytically. We apply the general operator structure of a nucleon-nucleon (NN) potential to the NN T-matrix, which becomes a sum of six terms, each term being scalar products of spin operators and momentum vectors multiplied with scalar functions of vector momenta. Inserting this expansions of the NN force and T-matrix into the Lippmann-Schwinger equation allows to remove the spin dependence by taking traces and yields a set of six coupled equations for the scalar functions found in the expansion of the T-matrix.

The Two-Nucleon System in Three Dimensions

A recently developed formulation for treating two- and three-nucleon bound states in a three-dimensional formulation based on spin-momentum operators is extended to nucleon-nucleon scattering. Here the nucleon-nucleon t-matrix is represented by six spin-momentum operators accompanied by six scalar functions of momentum vectors. We present the formulation and provide numerical examples for the deuteron and nucleon-nucleon scattering observables. A comparison to results from a standard partial wave decomposition establishes the reliability of this new formulation.

A new way to perform partial wave decompositions of few-nucleon forces

We formulate a general and exact method of partial wave decomposition (PWD) of any nucleon-nucleon (NN) potential and any three-nucleon (3N) force. The approach allows one to efficiently use symbolic algebra software to generate the interaction dependent part of the program code calculating the interaction. We demonstrate the feasibility of this approach for the one-boson exchange BonnB potential, a recent nucleon-nucleon chiral force and the chiral two-pion-exchange three-nucleon force. In all cases very good agreement between the new and the traditional PWD is found. The automated PWD offered by the new approach is of the utmost importance in view of future applications of numerous chiral N3LO contributions to the 3N force in three nucleon calculations.

Subtractive renormalization of the NN interaction in chiral effective theory up to next-to-next-to-leading order: S waves

We extend our subtractive-renormalization method in order to evaluate the 1S0 and 3S1-3D1 NN scattering phase shifts up to next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) in chiral effective theory. We show that, if energy-dependent contact terms are employed in the NN potential, the 1S0 phase shift can be obtained by carrying out two subtractions on the Lippmann-Schwinger equation. These subtractions use knowledge of the the scattering length and the 1S0 phase shift at a specific energy to eliminate the low-energy constants in the contact interaction from the scattering equation. For the J=1 coupled channel, a similar renormalization can be achieved by three subtractions that employ knowledge of the 3S1 scattering length, the 3S1 phase shift at a specific energy and the 3S1-3D1 generalized scattering length. In both channels a similar method can be applied to a potential with momentum-dependent contact terms, except that in that case one of the subtractions must be replaced by a fit to one piece of experimental data. This method allows the use of arbitrarily high cutoffs in the Lippmann-Schwinger equation. We examine the NNLO S-wave phase shifts for cutoffs as large as 5 GeV and show that the presence of linear energy dependence in the NN potential creates spurious poles in the scattering amplitude. In consequence the results are in conflict with empirical data over appreciable portions of the considered cutoff range. We also identify problems with the use of cutoffs greater than 1 GeV when momentum-dependent contact interactions are employed. These problems are ameliorated, but not eliminated, by the use of spectral-function regularization for the two-pion exchange part of the NN potential

3N Scattering in a Three-Dimensional Operator Formulation

A recently developed formulation for a direct treatment of the equations for two- and three-nucleon bound states as set of coupled equations of scalar functions depending only on vector momenta is extended to three-nucleon scattering. Starting from the spin-momentum dependence occurring as scalar products in two- and three-nucleon forces together with other scalar functions, we present the Faddeev multiple scattering series in which order by order the spin-degrees can be treated analytically leading to 3D integrations over scalar functions depending on momentum vectors only. Such formulation is especially important in view of awaiting extension of 3N Faddeev calculations to projectile energies above the pion production threshold and applications of chiral perturbation theory 3N forces, which are to be most efficiently treated directly in such three-dimensional formulation without having to expand these forces into a partial wave basis.

Subtractive renormalization of chiral effective theory NN potentials up to next-to-next-to-leading order

We have developed a subtractive renormalization method with which we can evaluate nucleon-nucleon (NN) scattering phase shifts produced by the NN potential obtained at leading, next-to-leading, and next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) in chiral effective theory ($χ$ET). In this method the low-energy constants associated with short-distance NN physics are eliminated from the Lippmann-Schwinger equation (LSE) for the NN t-matrix, in favor of physical observables. This allows us to straightforwardly compute scattering phase shifts for ultra-violet cutoffs of at least 10 GeV. We then perform detailed analyses of the maximum cutoff at which the use of a $χ$ET NN potential in the LSE makes sense.

Subtractive renormalization of the chiral potentials up to next-to-next-to-leading order in higher NN partial waves

We develop a subtractive renormalization scheme to evaluate the P-wave NN scattering phase shifts using chiral effective theory potentials. This allows us to consider arbitrarily high cutoffs in the Lippmann-Schwinger equation (LSE). We employ NN potentials computed up to next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) in chiral effective theory, using both dimensional regularization and spectral-function regularization. Our results obtained from the subtracted P-wave LSE show that renormalization of the NNLO potential can be achieved by using the generalized NN scattering lengths as input--an alternative to fitting the constant that multiplies the P-wave contact interaction in the chiral effective theory NN force. However, in order to obtain a reasonable fit to the NN data at NNLO the generalized scattering lengths must be varied away from the values extracted from the so-called high-precision potentials. We investigate how the generalized scattering lengths extracted from NN data using various chiral potentials vary with the cutoff in the LSE. The cutoff-dependence of these observables, as well as of the phase shifts at $T_{lab} \approx 100$ MeV, suggests that for a chiral potential computed with dimensional regularization the highest LSE cutoff it is sensible to adopt is approximately 1 GeV. Using spectral-function regularization to compute the two-pion-exchange potentials postpones the onset of cutoff dependence in these quantities, but does not remove it.

A New Treatment of 2N and 3N Bound States in Three Dimensions

The direct treatment of the Faddeev equation for the three-boson system in 3 dimensions is generalized to nucleons. The one Faddeev equation for identical bosons is replaced by a strictly finite set of coupled equations for scalar functions which depend only on 3 variables. The spin-momentum dependence occurring as scalar products in 2N and 3N forces accompanied by scalar functions is supplemented by a corresponding expansion of the Faddeev amplitudes. After removing the spin degrees of freedom by suitable operations only scalar expressions depending on momenta remain. The corresponding steps are performed for the deuteron leading to two coupled equations.

Lorentz Boosted Nucleon-Nucleon T-matrix and the Triton Binding Energy

The phase equivalent relativistic NN potential, which is related by a nonlinear equation to the original nonrelativistic potential, is used to construct the mass operator (rest Hamiltonian) of the 3-nucleon system. Employing the CD Bonn NN potential, the solution of the relativistic 3N Faddeev equation for $^3$H shows slightly less binding energy than the corresponding nonrelativistic result. The effect of the Wigner spin rotation on the binding is very small.

A New Approach to the 3D Faddeev Equation for Three-Body Scattering

A novel approach to solve the Faddeev equation for three-body scattering at arbitrary energies is proposed. This approach disentangles the complicated singularity structure of the free three-nucleon propagator leading to the moving and logarithmic singularities in standard treatments. The Faddeev equation is formulated in momentum space and directly solved in terms of momentum vectors without employing a partial wave decomposition. In its simplest form the Faddeev equation for identical bosons, which we are using, is an integral equation in five variables, magnitudes of relative momenta and angles. The singularities of the free propagator and the deuteron propagator are now both simple poles in two different momentum variables, and thus can both be integrated with standard techniques.

Faddeev and Glauber Calculations at Intermediate Energies in a Model for n+d Scattering

Obtaining cross sections for nuclear reactions at intermediate energies based on the Glauber formulation has a long tradition. Only recently the energy regime of a few hundred MeV has become accessible to ab-initio Faddeev calculations of three-body scattering. In order to go to higher energies, the Faddeev equation for three-body scattering is formulated and directly solved without employing a partial wave decomposition. In the simplest form the Faddeev equation for interacting scalar particles is a three-dimensional integral equation in five variables, from which the total cross section, the cross sections for elastic scattering and breakup reactions, as well as differential cross sections are obtained. The same observables are calculated based on the Glauber formulation. The first order Glauber calculation and the Glauber rescattering corrections are compared in detail with the corresponding terms of the Faddeev multiple scattering series for projectile energies between 100 MeV and 2 GeV.

Subtractive renormalization of the NN scattering amplitude at leading order in chiral effective theory

The leading-order nucleon-nucleon (NN) potential derived from chiral perturbation theory consists of one-pion exchange plus a short-distance contact interaction. We show that in the 1S0 and 3S1-3D1 channels renormalization of the Lippmann-Schwinger equation for this potential can be achieved by performing one subtraction. This subtraction requires as its only input knowledge of the NN scattering lengths. This procedure leads to a set of integral equations for the partial-wave NN t-matrix which give cutoff-independent results for the corresponding NN phase shifts. This reformulation of the NN scattering equation offers practical advantages, because only observable quantities appear in the integral equation. The scattering equation may then be analytically continued to negative energies, where information on bound-state energies and wave functions can be extracted.

Poincaré Invariant Three-Body Scattering at Intermediate Energies

The relativistic Faddeev equation for three-nucleon scattering is formulated in momentum space and directly solved in terms of momentum vectors without employing a partial wave decomposition. The equation is solved through Padé summation, and the numerical feasibility and stability of the solution is demonstrated. Relativistic invariance is achieved by constructing a dynamical unitary representation of the Poincaré group on the three-nucleon Hilbert space. Based on a Malfliet-Tjon type interaction, observables for elastic and break-up scattering are calculated for projectile energies in the intermediate energy range up to 2 GeV, and compared to their nonrelativistic counterparts. The convergence of the multiple scattering series is investigated as a function of the projectile energy in different scattering observables and configurations. Approximations to the two-body interaction embedded in the three-particle space are compared to the exact treatment.
