Spectral origin of the colossal magnetodielectric effect in multiferroic DyMn2O5

The origin of the colossal magnetodielectric effect in DyMn2O5 [1] has been an outstanding question in multiferroics. Here, we report the activation of the electric dipole mode at 4-5 cm-1 in an applied magnetic field which fully accounts for the CMD effect. We examine two alternative explanations of this mode: an electromagnon and transitions between f-electron levels of Dy3+ ions. The experimental and theoretical evidence supports the electromagnon origin of the CMD effect.

Exciton-magnon transitions in the frustrated chromium antiferromagnets CuCrO2, alpha-CaCr2O4, CdCr2O4, and ZnCr2O4

We report on optical transmission spectroscopy of the Cr-based frustrated triangular antiferromagnets CuCrO2 and alpha-CaCr2O4, and the spinels CdCr2O4 and ZnCr2O4 in the near-infrared to visible-light frequency range. We explore the possibility to search for spin correlations far above the magnetic ordering temperature and for anomalies in the magnon lifetime in the magnetically ordered state by probing exciton-magnon sidebands of the spin-forbidden crystal-field transitions of the Cr3+ ions (spin S = 3/2). In CuCrO2 and alpha-CaCr2O4 the appearance of fine structures below T_N is assigned to magnon sidebands by comparison with neutron scattering results. The temperature dependence of the line width of the most intense sidebands in both compounds can be described by an Arrhenius law. For CuCrO2 the sideband associated with the 4A2 -> 2T2 transition can be observed even above T_N. Its line width does not show a kink at the magnetic ordering temperature and can alternatively be described by a Z2 vortex scenario proposed previously for similar materials. The exciton-magnon features in alpha-CaCr2O4 are more complex due to the orthorhombic distortion. While for CdCr2O4 magnon sidebands are identified below T_N and one sideband excitation is found to persist across the magnetic ordering transition, only a weak fine structure related to magnetic ordering has been observed in ZnCr2O4.

Universal exchange-driven phonon splitting in antiferromagnets

We report a linear dependence of the phonon splitting Δωon the non-dominant exchange coupling constant J_{nd} in the antiferromagnetic transition-metal monoxides MnO, FeO, CoO, NiO, and in the frustrated antiferromagnetic oxide spinels CdCr2O4, MgCr2O4, and ZnCr2O4. It directly confirms the theoretical prediction of an exchange induced splitting of the zone-centre optical phonon for the monoxides and explains the magnitude and the change of sign of the phonon splitting on changing the sign of the non-dominant exchange also in the frustrated oxide spinels. The experimentally found linear relation \hbarΔω= βJ_{nd} S^2 with slope β= 3.7 describes the splitting for both systems and agrees with the observations in the antiferromagnets KCoF3 and KNiF3 with perovskite structure and negligible next-nearest neighbour coupling. The common behavior found for very different classes of cubic antiferromagnets suggests a universal dependence of the exchange-induced phonon splitting at the antiferromagnetic transition on the non-dominant exchange coupling.

Wüstite: Electric, thermodynamic and optical properties of FeO

We report on a systematic optical investigation of wüstite. In addition, the sample under consideration, Fe0.93O, has been characterized in detail by electrical transport, dielectric, magnetic and thermodynamic measurements. From infrared reflectivity experiments, phonon properties, Drude-like conductivity contributions and electronic transitions have been systematically investigated. The phonon modes reveal a clear splitting below the antiferromagnetic ordering temperature, similar to observations in other transition-metal monoxides and in spinel compounds which have been explained in terms of a spin-driven Jahn-Teller effect. The electronic transitions can best be described assuming a crystal-field parameter Dq = 750 cm-1 and a spin-orbit coupling constant λ= 95 cm-1. A well defined crystal field excitation at low temperatures reveals significant broadening on increasing temperature with an overall transfer of optical weight into dc conductivity contributions. This fact seems to indicate a melting of the on-site excitation into a Drude behavior of delocalized charge carriers. The optical band gap in wüstite is close to 1.0 eV at room temperature. With decreasing temperatures and passing the magnetic phase transition we have detected a strong blue shift of the correlation-induced band edge, which amounts more than 15% and has been rarely observed in antiferromagnets.

Light-matter interaction in antiferromagnets: the exchange-induced magnetic dipole mechanism

We propose a novel mechanism for exchange-induced exciton-magnon absorptions via hopping between two antiferromagnetically coupled sites and a simultaneous magnetic dipole transition to an excited orbital state. The obtained selection rules correspond to ones for magnetic dipole transitions and are in agreement with the exciton-magnon transitions observed in the quasi one-dimensional Heisenberg antiferromagnet KCuF3. The calculated magnon density of states in combination with a structure dependent factor identifies the observed optical magnon sideband to originate from transverse magnon modes.

Improvement of superconducting properties of FeSe0.5Te0.5 single crystals by Mn substitution

We report on structural, susceptibility, conductivity, and heat-capacity studies of FeSe0.5Te0.5 single crystals with 2% substitution of Mn for Fe. Mn-doped samples show a higher onset temperature, a narrower width of the superconducting transition, and a higher magnitude of the jump in the specific heat at Tc in compared to undoped samples. From the resistivity data in magnetic fields parallel to the c axis we derived an upper critical field Hc2 of ~580 kOe for doped samples compared to 490 kOe for pure samples. Using a single-band BCS model we can describe the electronic specific heat in the superconducting state with a gap Delta(T=0) = 31 K for the Mn doped sample in comparison to 26 K for pure FeSe0.5Te0.5.

Physical properties of FeSe$_{0.5}$Te$_{0.5}$ single crystals grown under different conditions

We report on structural, magnetic, conductivity, and thermodynamic studies of FeSe$_{0.5}$Te$_{0.5}$ single crystals grown by self-flux and Bridgman methods. The samples were prepared from starting materials of different purity at various temperatures and cooling rates. The lowest values of the susceptibility in the normal state, the highest transition temperature $T_c$ of 14.5 K, and the largest heat-capacity anomaly at $T_c$ were obtained for pure (oxygen-free) samples. The critical current density $j_c$ of $8 \times 10^4$ A/cm$^2$ (at 2 K) achieved in pure samples is attributed to intrinsic inhomogeneity due to disorder at the cation and anion sites. The impure samples show increased $j_c$ up to $2.3 \times 10^5$ A/cm$^2$ due to additional pinning centers of Fe$_3$O$_4$. The upper critical field $H_{c2}$ of $\sim 500$ kOe is estimated from the resistivity study in magnetic fields parallel to the \emph{c}-axis. The anisotropy of the upper critical field $γ_{H_{c2}} = H_{_{c2}}^{ab}/H_{_{c2}}^{c}$ reaches a value $\sim 6$ at $T\longrightarrow T_c$. Extremely low values of the residual Sommerfeld coefficient for pure samples indicate a high volume fraction of the superconducting phase (up to 97%). The electronic contribution to the specific heat in the superconducting state is well described within a single-band BCS model with a temperature dependent gap $Δ_0 = 27(1)$ K. A broad cusp-like anomaly in the electronic specific heat of samples with suppressed bulk superconductivity is ascribed to a splitting of the ground state of the interstitial Fe$^{2+}$ ions. This contribution is fully suppressed in the ordered state in samples with bulk superconductivity.

Magnetic and superconducting transitions in Ba$_{1-x}$K$_x$Fe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ studied by specific heat

We report on specific heat measurements in Ba$_{1-x}$K$_x$Fe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ ($x\le 0.6$). For the underdoped sample with $x=0.2$ both the spin-density-wave transition at $T = 100$ K and the superconducting transition at 23 K can be identified. The electronic contribution to the specific heat in the superconducting state for concentrations in the vicinity of optimal doping $x=0.4$ can be well described by a full single-gap within the BCS limit.

Optical phonons, spin correlations, and spin-phonon coupling in the frustrated pyrochlore magnets CdCr2O4 and ZnCr2O4

We report on infrared, Raman, magnetic susceptibility, and specific heat measurements on CdCr2O4 and ZnCr2O4 single crystals. We estimate the nearest-neighbor and next-nearest neighbor exchange constants from the magnetic susceptibility and extract the spin-spin correlation functions obtained from the magnetic susceptibility and the magnetic contribution to the specific heat. By comparing with the frequency shift of the infrared optical phonons above TN , we derive estimates for the spin-phonon coupling constants in these systems. The observation of phonon modes which are both Raman and infrared active suggest the loss of inversion symmetry below the Neel temperature in CdCr2O4 in agreement with theoretical predictions by Chern and coworkers [Phys. Rev. B 74, 060405 (2006)]. In ZnCr2O4 several new modes appear below TN, but no phonon modes could be detected which are both Raman and infrared active indicating the conservation of inversion symmetry in the low temperature phase.

Magnetic susceptibility of the frustrated spinels ZnCr2O4, MgCr2O4 and CdCr2O4

We analyzed the magnetic susceptibilities of several Cr spinels using two recent models for the geometrically frustrated pyrochlore lattice, the Quantum Tetrahedral Mean Field model and a Generalized Constant Coupling model. Both models can describe the experimental data for ACr2 O4 (with A = Zn, Mg, and Cd) satisfactorily, with the former yielding a somewhat better agreement with experiment for A = Zn, Mg. The obtained exchange constants for nearest and next-nearest neighbors are discussed.

Far-infrared optical excitations in multiferroic TbMnO_3

We provide a detailed study of the reflectivity of multiferroic TbMnO_3 for wave numbers from 40 cm^{-1} to 1000 cm^{-1} and temperatures 5 K < T < 300 K. Excitations are studied for polarization directions E || a, the polarization where electromagnons are observed, and for E || c, the direction of the spontaneous polarization in this material. The temperature dependencies of eigenfrequencies, damping constants and polar strengths of all modes are studied and analyzed. For E || a and below the spiral ordering temperature of about 27 K we observe a transfer of optical weight from phonon excitations to electromagnons, which mainly involves low-frequency phonons. For E || c an unusual increase of the total polar strength and hence of the dielectric constant is observed indicating significant transfer of dynamic charge probably within manganese-oxygen bonds on decreasing temperatures.

Optical properties of ZnCr2Se4 - Spin-phonon coupling and electronic d-d-like excitations

We studied the optical properties of antiferromagnetic ZnCr2Se4 by infrared spectroscopy up to 28,000 cm-1 and for temperatures from 5 to 295 K. At the magnetic phase transition at 21 K, one of the four phonon modes reveals a clear splitting of 3 cm-1 as a result of spin-phonon coupling, the other three optical eigenmodes only show shifts of the eigenfrequencies. The antiferromagnetic ordering and the concomitant splitting of the phonon mode can be suppressed in a magnetic field of 7 T. At higher energies we observed a broad excitation band which is dominated by a two-peak-structure at about 18,000 cm-1 and 22,000 cm-1, respectively. These energies are in good agreement with the expected spin-allowed crystal-field transition of the Cr3+ ions. The unexpected strength of these forbidden onsite d-d transitions is attributed to a considerable hybridization of the selenium p with the chromium d orbitals.

Colossal dielectric constant up to GHz at room temperature

The search for new materials with extremely high ("colossal") dielectric constants, required for future electronics, is one of the most active fields of modern materials science. However, the applicability of the colossal-epsilon' materials, discovered so far, suffers from the fact that their dielectric constant, epsilon', only is huge in a limited frequency range below about 1 MHz. In the present report, we show that the dielectric properties of La15/8Sr1/8NiO4 surpass those of other materials. Especially, epsilon' retains its colossal magnitude of >10000 well into the GHz range. This material is prone to charge order and this spontaneous ordering process of the electronic subsystem can be assumed to play an important role in the generation of the observed unusual dielectric properties.

Optical Spectroscopy in CoO: Phonons, Electric, and Magnetic Excitations

The reflectivity of single-crystalline CoO has been studied by optical spectroscopy for wave numbers ranging from 100 to 28,000\wn and for temperatures 8 $< T <$ 325 K\@. A splitting of the cubic IR-active phonon mode on passing the antiferromagnetic phase transition at $T_N$ = 289 K has been observed. At low temperatures the splitting amounts to 15.0\wn. In addition, we studied the splitting of the cubic crystal field ground state of the Co$^{2+}$ ions due to spin-orbit coupling, a tetragonal crystal field, and exchange interaction. Below $T_N$, magnetic dipole transitions between the exchange-split levels are identified and the energy-level scheme can be well described with a spin-orbit coupling $λ= 151.1\wn$, an exchange constant $J = 17.5\wn$, and a tetragonal crystal-field parameter $D = -47.8\wn$. Already in the paramagnetic state electric quadrupole transitions between the spin-orbit split level have been observed. At high frequencies, two electronic levels of the crystal-field-split $d$-manifold were identified at 8,000 and 18,500\wn.

Optical evidence for symmetry changes above the Neel temperature in KCuF3

We report on optical measurements of the 1D Heisenberg antiferromagnet KCuF3. The crystal-field excitations of the Cu2+ ions have been observed and their temperature dependence can be understood in terms of magnetic and exchange-induced dipole mechanisms and vibronic interactions. Above T_N we observe a new temperature scale T_S characterized by the emergence of narrow absorption features that correlate with changes of the orbital ordering as observed by Paolasini et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 88, 106403 (2002)]. The appearance of these optical transitions provides evidence for a symmetry change above the Neel temperature that affects the orbital ordering and paves the way for the antiferromagnetic ordering.

Magnetic-order induced phonon splitting in MnO from far-infrared spectroscopy

Detailed far-infrared spectra of the optical phonons are reported for antiferromagnetic MnO. Eigenfrequencies, phonon damping and effective plasma frequencies are studied as a function of temperature. Special attention is paid to the phonon splitting at the antiferromagnetic phase transition. The results are compared to recent experimental and theoretical studies of the spin-phonon coupling in frustrated magnets, which are explained in terms of a spin-driven Jahn-Teller effect, and to ab initio and model calculations, which predict phonon splitting induced by magnetic order.

Broadband dielectric response of CaCu3Ti4O12: From dc to the electronic transition regime

We report on phonon properties and electronic transitions in CaCu3Ti4O12, a material which reveals a colossal dielectric constant at room temperature without any ferroelectric transition. The results of far- and mid-infrared measurements are compared to those obtained by broadband dielectric and millimeter-wave spectroscopy on the same single crystal. The unusual temperature dependence of phonon eigenfrequencies, dampings and ionic plasma frequencies of low lying phonon modes are analyzed and discussed in detail. Electronic excitations below 4 eV are identified as transitions between full and empty hybridized oxygen-copper bands and between oxygen-copper and unoccupied Ti 3d bands. The unusually small band gap determined from the dc-conductivity (~200 meV) compares well with the optical results.

Polar phonons and spin-phonon coupling in HgCr2S4 and CdCr2S4

Polar phonons of HgCr2S4 and CdCr2S4 are studied by far-infrared spectroscopy as a function of temperature and external magnetic field. Eigenfrequencies, damping constants, effective plasma frequencies and Lyddane-Sachs-Teller relations, and effective charges are determined. Ferromagnetic CdCr2S4 and antiferromagnetic HgCr2S4 behave rather similar. Both compounds are dominated by ferromagnetic exchange and although HgCr2S4 is an antiferromagnet, no phonon splitting can be observed at the magnetic phase transition. Temperature and magnetic field dependence of the eigenfrequencies show no anomalies indicating displacive polar soft mode behavior. However, significant effects are detected in the temperature dependence of the plasma frequencies indicating changes in the nature of the bonds and significant charge transfer. In HgCr2S4 we provide experimental evidence that the magnetic field dependence of specific polar modes reveal shifts exactly correlated with the magnetization showing significant magneto-dielectric effects even at infrared frequencies.
