High-redshift GRB 140304A at z = 5.282 with flaring activity: A multi-wavelength study

Context. This article presents a detailed multi-wavelength analysis of GRB 140304A at z = 5.282, having uncommon late-time flaring features. The aim is to study GRB 140304A and other similar bursts to understand stellar evolution and formation processes at high-z. Aims. GRBs at high-z, possible flaring activities at different frequencies seen at relatively late-times, help to constrain temporal correlation among contemporaneous flares. In the present study, we plan to constrain such a temporal and spectral study for a sample of high-z bursts, including GRB 140304A. Methods. We use Swift, Fermi, and ground-based observations to constrain the temporal and spectral properties of the prompt and afterglow emissions. Using the cross-correlation function, we calculate the spectral lag in the light curves observed in two energy bands of Swift's Burst Alert Telescope (BAT) and X-ray Telescope (XRT). Results. Parameter evolution of the prompt emission analysis reveals a hard-to-soft evolution of the spectral peak energy (Ep) and the magnetic field strength (B), consistent with the typical population of long GRBs. For GRB 140304A, a rare pattern of spectral lag evolution having positive lag in the early BAT light curves, but no lag is observed in the XRT light curves. We have also observed systematic time delays among the peak times of flares in three different bands, but the optical flares exhibit a morphological correspondence with X-ray or gamma-ray flares. Conclusions. Our analysis shows that the observed positive spectral lag in GRB 140304A is closely related to the hard-to-soft spectral evolution during the prompt emission phase, as seen in some of the other long GRBs. Additionally, there is a clear connection between gamma-ray, X-ray and optical flares with prompt emission, which are produced through synchrotron radiation during rapid bulk acceleration within the emitting region.

Ubiquitous order-disorder transition in the Mn antisite sublattice of the (MnBi$_2$Te$_4$)(Bi$_2$Te$_3$)$_n$ magnetic topological insulators

Magnetic topological insulators (TIs) herald a wealth of applications in spin-based technologies, relying on the novel quantum phenomena provided by their topological properties. Particularly promising is the (MnBi$_2$Te$_4$)(Bi$_2$Te$_3$)$_n$ layered family of established intrinsic magnetic TIs that can flexibly realize various magnetic orders and topological states. High tunability of this material platform is enabled by manganese-pnictogen intermixing, whose amounts and distribution patterns are controlled by synthetic conditions. Positive implication of the strong intermixing in MnSb$_2$Te$_4$ is the interlayer exchange coupling switching from antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic, and the increasing magnetic critical temperature. On the other side, intermixing also implies atomic disorder which may be detrimental for applications. Here, we employ nuclear magnetic resonance and muon spin spectroscopy, sensitive local probe techniques, to scrutinize the impact of the intermixing on the magnetic properties of (MnBi$_2$Te$_4$)(Bi$_2$Te$_3$)$_n$ and MnSb$_2$Te$_4$. Our measurements not only confirm the opposite alignment between the Mn magnetic moments on native sites and antisites in the ground state of MnSb$_2$Te$_4$, but for the first time directly show the same alignment in (MnBi$_2$Te$_4$)(Bi$_2$Te$_3$)$_n$ with n = 0, 1 and 2. Moreover, for all compounds, we find the static magnetic moment of the Mn antisite sublattice to disappear well below the intrinsic magnetic transition temperature, leaving a homogeneous magnetic structure undisturbed by the intermixing. Our findings provide a microscopic understanding of the crucial role played by Mn-Bi intermixing in (MnBi$_2$Te$_4$)(Bi$_2$Te$_3$)$_n$ and offer pathways to optimizing the magnetic gap in its surface states.

Quantum disordered ground state in the spin-orbit coupled Jeff = 1/2 distorted honeycomb magnet BiYbGeO5

We delineate quantum magnetism in the strongly spin-orbit coupled, distorted honeycomb-lattice antiferromagnet BiYbGeO$_{5}$. Our magnetization and heat capacity measurements reveal that its low-temperature behavior is well described by an effective $J_{\rm eff}=1/2$ Kramers doublet of Yb$^{3+}$. The ground state is nonmagnetic with a tiny spin gap. Temperature-dependent magnetic susceptibility, magnetization isotherm, and heat capacity could be modeled well assuming isolated spin dimers with anisotropic exchange interactions $J_{\rm Z} \simeq 2.6$~K and $J_{\rm XY} \simeq 1.3$~K. Heat capacity measurements backed by muon spin relaxation suggest the absence of magnetic long-range order down to at least 80\,mK both in zero field and in applied fields. This sets BiYbGeO$_5$ apart from Yb$_2$Si$_2$O$_7$ with its unusual regime of magnon Bose-Einstein condensation and suggests negligible interdimer couplings, despite only a weak structural deformation of the honeycomb lattice.

Absence of magnetic order and emergence of unconventional fluctuations in $J_{\rm eff} =1/2$ triangular lattice antiferromagnet YbBO$_3$

We present the ground state properties of a new quantum antiferromagnet YbBO$_3$ in which the isotropic Yb$^{3+}$ triangular layers are separated by a non-magnetic layer of partially occupied B and O(2) sites. The magnetization and heat capacity data establish a spin-orbit entangled effective spin $J_{\rm eff} = 1/2$ state of Yb$^{3+}$ ions at low temperatures, interacting antiferromagnetically with an intra-layer coupling $J/k_{\rm B} \simeq 0.53$ K. The absence of oscillations and a $1/3$ tail in the zero-field muon asymmetries rule out the onset of magnetic long-range-order as well as spin-freezing down to 20~mK. An anomalous broad maximum in the temperature dependent heat capacity with a unusually reduced value and a broad anomaly in zero-field muon depolarization rate centered at $T^*\simeq 0.7 \frac{J}{k_{\rm B}}$ provide compelling evidence for a wide fluctuating regime ($0.182 \leq T/J \leq 1.63$) with slow relaxation. We infer that the fluctuating regime is a universal feature of a highly frustrated triangular lattice antiferromagnets while the absence of magnetic long-range-order is due to perfect two-dimensionality of the spin-lattice protected by non-magnetic site disorder.

GRB 140102A: Insight into Prompt Spectral Evolution and Early Optical Afterglow Emission

We present and perform a detailed analysis of multi-wavelength observations of \thisgrb, an optical bright GRB with an observed reverse shock (RS) signature. Observations of this GRB were acquired with the BOOTES-4 robotic telescope, the \fermi, and the \swift missions. Time-resolved spectroscopy of the prompt emission shows that changes to the peak energy (\Ep) tracks intensity and the low-energy spectral index seems to follow the intensity for the first episode, whereas this tracking behavior is less clear during the second episode. The fit to the afterglow light curves shows that the early optical afterglow can be described with RS emission and is consistent with the thin shell scenario of the constant ambient medium. The late time afterglow decay is also consistent with the prediction of the external forward shock (FS) model. We determine the properties of the shocks, Lorentz factor, magnetization parameters, and ambient density of \thisgrb, and compare these parameters with another 12 GRBs, consistent with having RS produced by thin shells in an ISM-like medium. The value of the magnetization parameter ($R_{\rm B} \approx 18$) indicates a moderately magnetized baryonic dominant jet composition for \thisgrb. We also report the host galaxy photometric observations of \thisgrb obtained with 10.4m GTC, 3.5m CAHA, and 3.6m DOT telescopes and find the host (photo $z$ = $2.8^{+0.7}_{-0.9}$) to be a high mass, star-forming galaxy with a star formation rate of $20 \pm 10 \msun$ $\rm yr^{-1}$.

A multi-wavelength analysis of a collection of short-duration GRBs observed between 2012-2015

We investigate the prompt emission and the afterglow properties of short duration gamma-ray burst (sGRB) 130603B and another eight sGRB events during 2012-2015, observed by several multi-wavelength facilities including the GTC 10.4m telescope. Prompt emission high energy data of the events were obtained by INTEGRAL/SPI/ACS, Swift/BAT and Fermi/GBM satellites. The prompt emission data by INTEGRAL in the energy range of 0.1-10 MeV for sGRB 130603B, sGRB 140606A, sGRB 140930B, sGRB 141212A and sGRB 151228A do not show any signature of the extended emission or precursor activity and their spectral and temporal properties are similar to those seen in case of other short bursts. For sGRB130603B, our new afterglow photometric data constraints the pre jet-break temporal decay due to denser temporal coverage. For sGRB 130603B, the afterglow light curve, containing both our new as well as previously published photometric data is broadly consistent with the ISM afterglow model. Modeling of the host galaxies of sGRB 130603B and sGRB 141212A using the LePHARE software supports a scenario in which the environment of the burst is undergoing moderate star formation activity. From the inclusion of our late-time data for 8 other sGRBs we are able to; place tight constraints on the non-detection of the afterglow, host galaxy or any underlying kilonova emission. Our late-time afterglow observations of the sGRB 170817A/GW170817 are also discussed and compared with the sub-set of sGRBs.

Optical identification of hybrid magnetic and electric excitations in Dy3Fe5O12 garnet

Far-infrared spectra of magneto-dielectric Dy3Fe5O12 garnet were studied between 13 and 100 cm-1 and at low temperatures between 5 and 80 K. A combination of transmission, reflectivity, and rotating analyzer ellipsometry was used to unambiguously identify the type of the dipole activity of the infrared modes. In addition to purely dielectric and magnetic modes, we observed several hybrid modes with a mixed magnetic and electric dipole activity. These modes originate from the superexchange between magnetic moments of Fe and Dy ions. Using 4x4 matrix formalism for materials with Mu=/=1, we modeled the experimental optical spectra and determined the far-infrared dielectric and magnetic permeability functions. The matching condition Mu(Wh)*Se=Eps(Wh)*Sm for the oscillator strengths Se(m) explains the observed vanishing of certain hybrid modes at Wh in reflectivity.
