Diffusion Fluid Antenna Systems for Resilient ISAC

Most existing integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) studies focus on enabling a base station (BS) to support sensing and communication over shared resources through advanced waveform design and power allocation. In contrast, the object-side perspective remains underexplored. For example, an object may wish to remain difficult to detect for security reasons, while another object in close proximity may generate dominant reflections that confuse the BS and impair sensing reliability for the intended target. These challenges motivate the fluid antenna system (FAS) paradigm which introduces a reconfigurable spatial degree of freedom (DoF) that can reshape sensing signatures via port selection, beyond what waveform and power control alone can provide. In this paper, we devise diffusion FAS, a generative artificial intelligence (AI)-driven framework that exploits spatial agility to steer ISAC performance over the electromagnetic fading manifold. Instead of optimizing ISAC solely in the power domain, diffusion FAS casts ISAC as a \emph{dynamic spatial selection} problem in which antenna states (i.e., ports) are chosen to shape sensing signatures while maintaining communication objectives. To work under sparse measurements, we employ a conditional denoising diffusion probabilistic model (DDPM) to reconstruct the latent spatial correlation structure from a small set of observed ports, enabling efficient exploration of the reconfigurable aperture. We demonstrate two FAS-enabled ISAC modes: (1) \emph{generative spatial stealth}, which identifies localized deep fades to suppress a target's sensing visibility by up to two orders of magnitude, and (2) \emph{target isolation}, which synthesizes spatial nulls that reject interference from adjacent objects.

Performance Analysis of Single-Antenna Fluid Antenna Systems via Extreme Value Theory

In single-antenna fluid antenna systems (FASs), the transceiver dynamically selects the antenna port with the strongest instantaneous channel to enhance link reliability. However, deriving accurate yet tractable performance expressions under fully correlated fading remains challenging, primarily due to the absence of a closed-form distribution for the FAS channel. To address this gap, this paper develops a novel performance evaluation framework for FAS operating under fully correlated Rayleigh fading, by modeling the FAS channel through extreme value distributions (EVDs). We first justify the suitability of EVD modeling and approximate the FAS channel through the Gumbel distribution, with parameters expressed as functions of the number of ports and the antenna aperture size via the maximum likelihood (ML) criterion. Closed-form expressions for the outage probability (OP) and ergodic capacity (EC) are then derived. While the Gumbel model provides an excellent fit, minor deviations arise in the extreme-probability regions. To further improve accuracy, we extend the framework using the generalized extreme value (GEV) distribution and obtain closed-form OP and EC approximations based on ML-derived parameters. Simulation results confirm that the proposed GEV-based framework achieves superior accuracy over the Gumbel-based model, while both EVD-based approaches offer computationally efficient and analytically tractable tools for evaluating the performance of FAS under realistic correlated fading conditions.

Cramer-Rao Bounds for Activity Detection in Conventional and Fluid Antenna Systems

In this letter, we develop a unified Cramér-Rao bound (CRB) framework to characterize the fundamental performance limits of transmission activity detection in fluid antenna systems (FASs) and conventional multiple fixed-position antenna (FPA) systems. To facilitate CRB analysis applicable to activity indicators, we relax the binary activity states to continuous parameters, thereby aligning the bound-based evaluation with practical threshold-based detection decisions. Closed-form CRB expressions are derived for two representative detection formulations, namely covariance-oriented and coherent models. Moreover, for single-antenna FASs, we obtain a closed-form coherent CRB by leveraging random matrix theory. The results demonstrate that CRB-based analysis provides a tractable and informative benchmark for evaluating activity detection across architectures and detection schemes, and further reveal that FASs can deliver strong spatial-diversity gains with significantly reduced complexity.

Toward a Receiver-Induced Channel Shaping Paradigm: FRIS-Assisted Rydberg Atomic MIMO with Quadrature-Leakage-Aware Design

This paper investigates a fluid reconfigurable intelligent surface (FRIS)-assisted Rydberg Atomic REceiver (RARE) architecture under magnitude-only heterodyne readout. We show that, unlike conventional coherent systems, the optimal propagation environment is fundamentally governed by the receiver's nonlinear measurement structure. In particular, under the strong-reference regime, symbol detection is limited by residual quadrature leakage after reference alignment, motivating a receiver-induced channel shaping approach rather than conventional channel-centric optimization. Based on this insight, we formulate a signal-independent leakage minimization problem that jointly optimizes the FRIS port set, finite-resolution phase shifts, and the transmit beamformer, resulting in a nonconvex mixed discrete-continuous design. To address this, we develop an alternating-optimization (AO) framework comprising: (i) a closed-form eigenvector solution for widely-linear beamforming, (ii) cross-entropy method (CEM)-based combinatorial port selection, and (iii) coordinate-descent (CD) phase refinement with guaranteed monotonic descent. Simulation results demonstrate fast convergence and consistent bit-error-rate (BER) gains across various modulation orders and receiver dimensions. Moreover, the proposed FRIS-enabled design achieves near-exhaustive performance with significantly reduced complexity and consistently outperforms conventional RIS schemes with fixed elements, highlighting the effectiveness of spatial reconfiguration in suppressing quadrature leakage and the additional spatial degree-of-freedom (DoF) enabled by FRIS for reliable atomic-MIMO detection.

Extreme-MIMO Field Trials in 7 GHz Band: Unlocking the Potential of New Spectrum for 6G

The frequency range around 7 GHz has emerged as a promising upper mid-band spectrum for 6th generation (6G), offering a practical balance between coverage and capacity. To fully exploit this band, however, future systems require substantially stronger beamforming and spatial multiplexing capability than today's 5G 64-port commercial deployments. This article investigates extreme multiple-input multiple-output (X-MIMO) with 256 digital ports as a practical 6G architecture for 7 GHz operation. First, through system-level simulations, we examine the throughput benefits and design trade-offs of increasing the number of base station (BS) and user equipment (UE) digital antenna ports, including comparisons between 128-port and 256-port configurations. We then present a 256-port 7 GHz BS and UE prototype and report field-trial results obtained in urban outdoor environments. The measurements demonstrate the feasibility of 8-layer downlink single-user MIMO over a 100 MHz bandwidth, achieving more than 3 Gbps for a single user under urban outdoor propagation conditions. Channel analysis based on measured data further suggests how the large digital aperture of X-MIMO supports high-order spatial multiplexing even with limited dominant angular clusters. Finally, we identify key challenges and outline research directions toward practical deployment of 7 GHz X-MIMO systems for 6G.

Performance Analysis and Optimization of FAS-ARIS Communications for 6G: System Modeling and Analytical Insights

This paper introduces a unified analytical and optimization framework for fluid antenna system-active reconfigurable intelligent surface (FAS-ARIS) communications in 6G. By combining the port reconfigurability of FAS with the signal amplification of ARIS, the proposed design enables more flexible control of the propagation environment and enhanced link reliability beyond what passive solutions can offer. We first derive the optimal ARIS amplification gain under a reflection power constraint to maximize the user's signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Using a block-diagonal matrix approximation, we obtain a tractable outage expression and a tight independent-antenna equivalent upper-bound. Building on this, we establish the monotonic relationship between outage and effective channel gain, which enables a closed-form solution for ARIS phase optimization under limited channel state information (CSI). To further improve spectral efficiency, we propose a region-partitioned throughput optimization framework that achieves near-optimal performance without exhaustive search, thereby verifying its low computational complexity. Extensive simulations confirm the accuracy of the analysis and demonstrate consistent gains in outage and throughput compared to baselines.

Quantum-PROBE: Rydberg Atomic Receiver-Based Multi-AoA Estimation with RF Lens

This paper presents the Quantum-Power pROfile Based Estimation (PROBE) framework, a Rydberg Atomic Receiver (RARE)-based multi-user angle-of-arrival (AoA) estimation approach equipped with a radio-frequency (RF) lens front end. We establish a physics-consistent analytical model showing that magnitude-only RARE measurements, processed via the beam-propagation method (BPM) and snapshot-wise power accumulation, can be rigorously characterized as a nonnegative superposition of AoA-dependent, lens-induced spatial power profiles. This formulation reveals a structured and interpretable power-domain dictionary that enables multi-user AoA recovery without explicit phase reconstruction. Building on this foundation, we develop two complementary recovery strategies: (i) a principled non-negative least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (NN-LASSO)-based solver that estimates a sparse nonnegative angular representation via an accelerated proximal-gradient method followed by cluster-based AoA decoding, and (ii) a low-complexity successive interference cancellation (SIC) algorithm that iteratively identifies and removes dominant power-profile components through cosine-similarity matching. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed Quantum-PROBE framework consistently outperforms representative RARE- and RF-based benchmarks across diverse system configurations, while offering a clear accuracy-complexity tradeoff between the NN-LASSO and SIC variants for practical quantum sensing deployments.

Interference Propagation Analysis for Large-Scale Multi-RIS-Empowered Wireless Communications:An Epidemiological Perspective

Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) have gained significant attention in recent years due to their ability to control the reflection of radio-frequency signals and reshape the wireless propagation environment. Unlike traditional studies that primarily focus on the advantages of RISs, this paper examines the negative impacts of RISs by investigating interference propagation caused by user mobility in downlink wireless systems. We employ a stochastic geometric model to simulate the locations of base stations and RISs using the Matérn hard core point process, while user locations are modeled with the homogeneous Poisson point process. We derive novel closed-form expressions for the power distributions of the received signal at the users and the interfering signal. Additionally, we present a novel expression for coverage probability and introduce the concept of interference propagation intensity. To characterize the dynamics of interference caused by user mobility, we adopt an epidemiological approach using the susceptible-infected-susceptible model. Finally, crucial factors influencing the propagation of interference are analyzed. Numerical results validate our theoretical analysis and provide suggestions for managing interference propagation in large-scale multi-RIS wireless communication networks.

UAV-Enabled Short-Packet Communication via Fluid Antenna Systems

This paper develops a framework for analyzing UAV-enabled short-packet communication, leveraging fluid antenna system (FAS)-assisted relaying networks. Operating in the short-packet regime and focusing on challenging urban environments, we derive novel, closed-form expressions for the block error rate (BLER). This is achieved by modeling the spatially correlated Nakagami-$m$ fading link via a tractable eigenvalue-based approach. A high-signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) asymptotic analysis is also presented, revealing the system's fundamental diversity order. Building on this analysis, we formulate a novel energy efficiency (EE) maximization problem that, unlike idealized models, uniquely incorporates the non-trivial time and energy overheads of FAS port selection. An efficient hierarchical algorithm is proposed to jointly optimize key system parameters. Numerical results validate our analysis, demonstrating that while FAS provides substantial power gains, the operational overhead creates a critical trade-off. This trade-off dictates an optimal number of FAS ports and a non-trivial optimal UAV deployment altitude, governed by the balance between blockage and path loss. This work provides key insights for FAS-aided UAV communications.

Towards Joint Optimization for UAV-Integrated RIS-Assisted Fluid Antenna Systems

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) integrated into cellular networks face significant challenges from air-to-ground interference. To address this, we propose a downlink UAV communication system that leverages a fluid antenna system (FAS)- assisted reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) to enhance signal quality. By jointly optimizing the FAS port positions and RIS phase shifts, we maximize the achievable rate. The resulting nonconvex optimization problem is solved using successive convex approximation (SCA) based on second-order cone programming (SOCP), which reformulates the constraints into a tractable form. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm significantly improves both outage probability and achievable rate over conventional fixed-position antenna (FPA) schemes, with particularly large gains in large-scale RIS configurations. Moreover, the algorithm converges rapidly, making it suitable for real-time applications

Context-Aware Deep Learning for Robust Channel Extrapolation in Fluid Antenna Systems

Fluid antenna systems (FAS) offer remarkable spatial flexibility but face significant challenges in acquiring high-resolution channel state information (CSI), leading to considerable overhead. To address this issue, we propose CANet, a robust deep learning model for channel extrapolation in FAS. CANet combines context-adaptive modeling with a cross-scale attention mechanism and is built on a ConvNeXt v2 backbone to improve extrapolation accuracy for unobserved antenna ports. To further enhance robustness, we introduce a novel spatial amplitude perturbation strategy, inspired by frequency-domain augmentation techniques in image processing. This motivates the incorporation of a Fourier-domain loss function, capturing frequency-domain consistency, alongside a spectral structure consistency loss that reinforces learning stability under perturbations. Our simulation results demonstrate that CANet outperforms benchmark models across a wide range of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) levels.

Ampli-Flection for 6G: Active-RIS-Aided Aerial Backhaul with Full 3D Coverage

In this paper, we propose a novel aerial backhaul architecture that employs an aerial active reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) to achieve energy-efficient, {full 3D coverage including UAV-BSs and ground users in 6G wireless networks}. Unlike prior aerial-RIS approaches limited to {2D coverage with only servicing ground users} or passive operation, the proposed design integrates an active-RIS onto a high-altitude aerial platform, enabling reliable line-of-sight links and overcoming multiplicative fading through amplification. In a scenario with UAV-BSs deployed to handle sudden traffic surges in urban areas, the aerial-active-RIS both reflects and amplifies backhaul signals to overcome blockage. We jointly optimize the aerial platform placement, array partitioning, and RIS phase configuration to maximize UAV-BS energy-efficiency. Simulation results confirm that the proposed method significantly outperforms benchmarks, demonstrating its strong potential to deliver resilient backhaul connectivity with comprehensive 3D coverage in 6G networks.

RIS-aided ISAC with $K$-Rydberg Atomic Receivers

In this paper, we investigate a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-assisted integrated sensing and communications (ISAC) framework equipped with multiple Rydberg atomic receiver (RAR)-aided users. By leveraging the reference-assisted reception mechanism of RARs, we develop a unified signal model that jointly captures downlink multi-user communication with RARs and monostatic radar sensing. To explicitly balance communication performance and sensing accuracy, we formulate a Cramer-Rao bound (CRB)-constrained utility maximization problem. To address these challenges, we propose a joint optimization framework that combines fractional programming (FP), majorization-minimization (MM), and the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM). Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed framework consistently outperforms the conventional approach over a wide range of system environments, thereby highlighting the importance of the proposed framework in unlocking the potential of RARs for 6G.

Indoor Fluid Antenna Systems Enabled by Layout-Specific Modeling and Group Relative Policy Optimization

Fluid antenna system (FAS) revolutionizes wireless communications via utilizing position-flexible antennas that dynamically optimize channel conditions and mitigate multipath fading. This innovation is particularly valuable in indoor environments, in which signal propagation is severely degraded due to structural obstructions and complex multipath reflections. In this paper, we investigate the channel modeling and the joint optimization of antenna positioning, beamforming, and power allocation for indoor FAS. In particular, we propose a layout-specific channel model, and employ the novel group relative policy optimization (GRPO) algorithm for tackling the optimization problem. Compared to the state-of-the-art Sionna model, our model achieves an 83.3% reduction in computation time with an approximately 3 dB increase in root-mean-square error (RMSE). When simplified to a two-ray model, our model allows for a closed-form antenna position solution with near-optimal performance. For the joint optimization problem, our GRPO algorithm outperforms proximal policy optimization (PPO) and other baselines in sum-rate, while requiring only 50.8% computational resources of PPO, thanks to its group advantage estimation. Simulation results show that increasing either the group size or trajectory length in GRPO does not yield significant improvements in sum-rate, suggesting that these parameters can be selected conservatively without sacrificing performance.

Extended Target Adaptive Beamforming for ISAC:A Perspective of Predictive Error Ellipse

Utilizing communication signals to extract motion parameters has emerged as a key direction in Vehicle-to- Everything (V2X) networks. Accurately modeling the relationship between communication signals and sensing performance is critical for the advancement of such systems. Unlike prior work that relies primarily on qualitative analysis, this paper derives the Cramér-Rao Bound (CRB) for radar parameter estimation in the context of Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) waveforms and Uniform Planar Array (UPA) configurations. Recognizing that vehicles may act as extended targets, we propose two New Radio (NR)-V2X-compatible beamforming schemes tailored to different phases of the communication process. During the initial beam establishment phase, we develop a beamforming approach based on the union of predictive error ellipses, which enhances scatterer localization through temporally assisted beam training. In the beam adjustment phase, we introduce an adaptive narrowest-beam strategy that leverages the positions of scatterers and the communication receiver (CR), enabling effective tracking with reduced complexity. The beam design problem is addressed using the minimum enclosing ellipse algorithm and tailored antenna control methods. Simulation results validate the proposed approach, showing up to a 32.4% improvement in achievable rate with a 32*32 transmit antenna array and a 5.2% gain with an 8*8 array, compared to conventional beam sweeping under identical SNR conditions.

Reimagining Wireless Connectivity: The FAS-RIS Synergy for 6G Smart Cities

Fluid antenna system (FAS) represents the concept of treating antenna as a reconfigurable physical-layer resource to broaden system design and network optimization and inspire next-generation reconfigurable antennas. FAS can unleash new degree of freedom (DoF) via antenna reconfigurations for novel spatial diversity. Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) on the other hand can reshape wireless propagation environments but often face limitations from double path-loss and minimal signal processing capability when operating independently. This article envisions a transformative FAS-RIS integrated architecture for future smart city networks, uniting the adaptability of FAS with the environmental control of RIS. The proposed framework has five key applications: FAS-enabled base stations (BSs) for large-scale beamforming, FAS-equipped user devices with finest spatial diversity, and three novel RIS paradigms -- fluid RIS (FRIS) with reconfigurable elements, FAS-embedded RIS as active relays, and enormous FAS (E-FAS) exploiting surface waves on facades to re-establish line-of-sight (LoS) communication. A two-timescale control mechanism coordinates network-level beamforming with rapid, device-level adaptation. Applications spanning from simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) to integrated sensing and communications (ISAC), with challenges in co-design, channel modeling, and optimization, are discussed. This article concludes with simulation results demonstrating the robustness and effectiveness of the FAS-RIS system.

Joint Activity Detection and Channel Estimation For Fluid Antenna System Exploiting Geographical and Angular Information

The fluid antenna system (FAS) refers to a family of reconfigurable antenna technologies that provide substantial spatial gains within a compact, predefined small space, thereby offering extensive degrees of freedom in the physical layer for future communication networks. The acquisition of channel state information (CSI) is critical, as it determines the placement of ports/antennas, which directly impacts FAS-based optimization. Although various channel estimation methods have been developed, significant flaws persist. For instance, the performance of greedy-based algorithms is heavily influenced by signal assumptions, and current model-free methods are infeasible due to prohibitively high computational complexity issue. Consequently, there is a pressing need for a well-balanced solution that exhibits flexibility, feasibility, and low complexity to support massive connectivity in FAS. In this work, we propose methods based on approximate message passing (AMP) integrated with adaptive expectation maximization (EM). The EM-AMP framework uniquely enables efficient large matrix computations with adaptive learning capabilities, independent of prior knowledge of the model or parameters within potential distributions, making it a robust candidate for FAS networks. We introduce two variants of the EM-AMP framework that leverage geographical and angular features in a FAS network. These proposed algorithms demonstrate improved estimation precision, fast convergence, and low computational complexity in large activity regions. Additionally, we analytically elucidate the reasons behind the inherent performance floor of greedy-based methods and highlight the critical role of angular information in algorithm design. Extensive numerical results validate the promising efficacy of the proposed algorithm designs and the derived analytical findings.
