The Future is Fluid: Revolutionizing DOA Estimation with Sparse Fluid Antennas

This paper investigates a design framework for sparse fluid antenna systems (FAS) enabling high-performance direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation, particularly in challenging millimeter-wave (mmWave) environments. By ingeniously harnessing the mobility of fluid antenna (FA) elements, the proposed architectures achieve an extended range of spatial degrees of freedom (DoF) compared to conventional fixed-position antenna (FPA) arrays. This innovation not only facilitates the seamless application of super-resolution DOA estimators but also enables robust DOA estimation, accurately localizing more sources than the number of physical antenna elements. We introduce two bespoke FA array structures and mobility strategies tailored to scenarios with aligned and misaligned received signals, respectively, demonstrating a hardware-driven approach to overcoming complexities typically addressed by intricate algorithms. A key contribution is a light-of-sight (LoS)-centric, closed-form DOA estimator, which first employs an eigenvalue-ratio test for precise LoS path number detection, followed by a polynomial root-finding procedure. This method distinctly showcases the unique advantages of FAS by simplifying the estimation process while enhancing accuracy. Numerical results compellingly verify that the proposed FA array designs and estimation techniques yield an extended DoF range, deliver superior DOA accuracy, and maintain robustness across diverse signal conditions.

Fluid Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface with Element-Level Pattern Reconfigurability: Beamforming and Pattern Co-Design

This paper proposes a novel pattern-reconfigurable fluid reconfigurable intelligent surface (FRIS) framework, where each fluid element can dynamically adjust its radiation pattern based on instantaneous channel conditions. To evaluate its potential, we first conduct a comparative analysis of the received signal power in point-to-point communication systems assisted by three types of surfaces: (1) the proposed pattern-reconfigurable FRIS, (2) a position-reconfigurable FRIS, and (3) a conventional RIS. Theoretical results demonstrate that the pattern-reconfigurable FRIS provides a significant advantage in modulating transmission signals compared to the other two configurations. To further study its capabilities, we extend the framework to a multiuser communication scenario. In this context, the spherical harmonics orthogonal decomposition (SHOD) method is employed to accurately model the radiation patterns of individual fluid elements, making the pattern design process more tractable. An optimization problem is then formulated with the objective of maximizing the weighted sum rate among users by jointly designing the active beamforming vectors and the spherical harmonics coefficients, subject to both transmit power and pattern energy constraints. To tackle the resulting non-convex optimization problem, we propose an iterative algorithm that alternates between a minimum mean-square error (MMSE) approach for active beamforming and a Riemannian conjugate gradient (RCG) method for updating the spherical harmonics coefficients. Simulation results show that the proposed pattern-reconfigurable FRIS significantly outperforms traditional RIS architectures based on the 3GPP 38.901 and isotropic radiation models, achieving average performance gains of 161.5% and 176.2%, respectively.

SpectrumFM: Redefining Spectrum Cognition via Foundation Modeling

The enhancement of spectrum efficiency and the realization of secure spectrum utilization are critically dependent on spectrum cognition. However, existing spectrum cognition methods often exhibit limited generalization and suboptimal accuracy when deployed across diverse spectrum environments and tasks. To overcome these challenges, we propose a spectrum foundation model, termed SpectrumFM, which provides a new paradigm for spectrum cognition. An innovative spectrum encoder that exploits the convolutional neural networks and the multi-head self attention mechanisms is proposed to effectively capture both fine-grained local signal structures and high-level global dependencies in the spectrum data. To enhance its adaptability, two novel self-supervised learning tasks, namely masked reconstruction and next-slot signal prediction, are developed for pre-training SpectrumFM, enabling the model to learn rich and transferable representations. Furthermore, low-rank adaptation (LoRA) parameter-efficient fine-tuning is exploited to enable SpectrumFM to seamlessly adapt to various downstream spectrum cognition tasks, including spectrum sensing (SS), anomaly detection (AD), and wireless technology classification (WTC). Extensive experiments demonstrate the superiority of SpectrumFM over state-of-the-art methods. Specifically, it improves detection probability in the SS task by 30% at -4 dB signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), boosts the area under the curve (AUC) in the AD task by over 10%, and enhances WTC accuracy by 9.6%.

Beamforming-based Achievable Rate Maximization in ISAC System for Multi-UAV Networking

Airborne mobile Integrated Sensing and Communication (ISAC) base stations have garnered significant attention recently, with ISAC technology being a crucial application for 6G networks. Since ISAC can sense potential mobile communication users, this paper studies an effective scheme for a multi-UAV network tailored for emergency communication. In this paper, we develop a temporal-assisted frame structure utilizing integrated omnidirectional and directional beampattern to facilitate efficient and frequent searching, with extended Kalman filtering (EKF) as an aid to beam alignment. Further, we address an optimization problem to maximize the total achievable rate per slot by jointly designing UAV beamforming, load management, and UAV direction planning, all while adhering to the constraints of the predicted beam coverage. Given the problem NP-hard, we introduce three robust mechanisms for its resolution: an enhanced distributed Successive Convex Approximation (SCA)-Iterative Rank Minimization (IRM) algorithm, an coalition game approach, and a Fermat point search method. In particular, the proposed SCA-IRM algorithm decomposes the original complex optimization problem into several sub-problems and assigns them equally to each UAV, so as to realize distributed computing and improve computational efficiency. Our proposed simulations demonstrate the improved system performance in terms of communication rate, fairness, and sensing accuracy, providing design guidelines of UAV-assisted emergency communication networking.

Toward Practical Fluid Antenna Systems: Co-Optimizing Hardware and Software for Port Selection and Beamforming

This paper proposes a hardware-software co-design approach to efficiently optimize beamforming and port selection in fluid antenna systems (FASs). To begin with, a fluid-antenna (FA)-enabled downlink multi-cell multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) network is modeled, and a weighted sum-rate (WSR) maximization problem is formulated. Second, a method that integrates graph neural networks (GNNs) with random port selection (RPS) is proposed to jointly optimize beamforming and port selection, while also assessing the benefits and limitations of random selection. Third, an instruction-driven deep learning accelerator based on a field-programmable gate array (FPGA) is developed to minimize inference latency. To further enhance efficiency, a scheduling algorithm is introduced to reduce redundant computations and minimize the idle time of computing cores. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed GNN-RPS approach achieves competitive communication performance. Furthermore, experimental evaluations indicate that the FPGA-based accelerator maintains low latency while simultaneously executing beamforming inference for multiple port selections.

AI-Enhanced Wide-Area Data Imaging via Massive Non-Orthogonal Direct Device-to-HAPS Transmission

Massive Aerial Processing for X MAP-X is an innovative framework for reconstructing spatially correlated ground data, such as environmental or industrial measurements distributed across a wide area, into data maps using a single high altitude pseudo-satellite (HAPS) and a large number of distributed sensors. With subframe-level data reconstruction, MAP-X provides a transformative solution for latency-sensitive IoT applications. This article explores two distinct approaches for AI integration in the post-processing stage of MAP-X. The DNN-based pointwise estimation approach enables real-time, adaptive reconstruction through online training, while the CNN-based image reconstruction approach improves reconstruction accuracy through offline training with non-real-time data. Simulation results show that both approaches significantly outperform the conventional inverse discrete Fourier transform (IDFT)-based linear post-processing method. Furthermore, to enable AI-enhanced MAP-X, we propose a ground-HAPS cooperation framework, where terrestrial stations collect, process, and relay training data to the HAPS. With its enhanced capability in reconstructing field data, AI-enhanced MAP-X is applicable to various real-world use cases, including disaster response and network management.

Iterative Sparse Asymptotic Minimum Variance Based Channel Estimation in Fluid Antenna System

With fluid antenna system (FAS) gradually establishing itself as a possible enabling technology for next generation wireless communications, channel estimation for FAS has become a pressing issue. Existing methodologies however face limitations in noise suppression. To overcome this, in this paper, we propose a maximum likelihood (ML)-based channel estimation approach tailored for FAS systems, designed to mitigate noise interference and enhance estimation accuracy. By capitalizing on the inherent sparsity of wireless channels, we integrate an ML-based iterative tomographic algorithm to systematically reduce noise perturbations during the channel estimation process. Furthermore, the proposed approach leverages spatial correlation within the FAS channel to optimize estimation accuracy and spectral efficiency. Simulation results confirm the efficacy of the proposed method, demonstrating superior channel estimation accuracy and robustness compared to existing benchmark techniques.

Large Language Model Empowered Design of Fluid Antenna Systems: Challenges, Frameworks, and Case Studies for 6G

The Fluid Antenna System (FAS), which enables flexible Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) communications, introduces new spatial degrees of freedom for next-generation wireless networks. Unlike traditional MIMO, FAS involves joint port selection and precoder design, a combinatorial NP-hard optimization problem. Moreover, fully leveraging FAS requires acquiring Channel State Information (CSI) across its ports, a challenge exacerbated by the system's near-continuous reconfigurability. These factors make traditional system design methods impractical for FAS due to nonconvexity and prohibitive computational complexity. While deep learning (DL)-based approaches have been proposed for MIMO optimization, their limited generalization and fitting capabilities render them suboptimal for FAS. In contrast, Large Language Models (LLMs) extend DL's capabilities by offering general-purpose adaptability, reasoning, and few-shot learning, thereby overcoming the limitations of task-specific, data-intensive models. This article presents a vision for LLM-driven FAS design, proposing a novel flexible communication framework. To demonstrate the potential, we examine LLM-enhanced FAS in multiuser scenarios, showcasing how LLMs can revolutionize FAS optimization.

Integrated Sensing and Communications in Downlink FDD MIMO without CSI Feedback

In this paper, we propose a precoding framework for frequency division duplex (FDD) integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) systems with multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO). Specifically, we aim to maximize ergodic sum spectral efficiency (SE) while satisfying a sensing beam pattern constraint defined by the mean squared error (MSE). Our method reconstructs downlink (DL) channel state information (CSI) from uplink (UL) training signals using partial reciprocity, eliminating the need for CSI feedback. To obtain the error covariance matrix of the reconstructed DL CSI, we devise an observed Fisher information-based estimation technique. Leveraging this, to mitigate interference caused by imperfect DL CSI reconstruction and sensing operations, we propose a rate-splitting multiple access (RSMA) aided precoder optimization method. This method jointly updates the precoding vector and Lagrange multipliers by solving the nonlinear eigenvalue problem with eigenvector dependency to maximize SE. The numerical results show that the proposed design achieves precise beam pattern control, maximizes SE, and significantly improves the sensing-communication trade-off compared to the state-of-the-art methods in FDD ISAC scenarios.

Fluid Antenna-Empowered Receive Spatial Modulation

Fluid antenna (FA), as an emerging antenna technology, fully exploits spatial diversity. This paper integrates FA with the receive spatial modulation (RSM) scheme and proposes a novel FA-empowered RSM (FA-RSM) system. In this system, the transmitter is equipped with an FA that simultaneously activates multiple ports to transmit precoded signals. We address three key challenges in the FA-RSM system: port selection, theoretical analysis, and detection. First, for port selection, an optimal algorithm from a capacity maximization perspective are proposed, followed by two low-complexity alternatives. Second, for theoretical analysis, performance evaluation metrics are provided for port selection, which demonstrate that increasing the number of activated ports enhances system performance. Third, regarding detection, two low-complexity detectors are proposed. Simulation results confirm that the FA-RSM system significantly outperforms the conventional RSM system. The proposed low-complexity port selection algorithms facilitate minimal performance degradation. Moreover, while activating additional ports improves performance, the gain gradually saturates due to inherent spatial correlation, highlighting the importance of effective port selection in reducing system complexity and cost. Finally, both proposed detectors achieve near-optimal detection performance with low computational complexity, emphasizing the receiver-friendly nature of the FA-RSM system.

Fluid Antenna System-Assisted Self-Interference Cancellation for In-Band Full Duplex Communications

In-band full-duplex (IBFD) systems are expected to double the spectral efficiency compared to half-duplex systems, provided that loopback self-interference (SI) can be effectively suppressed. The inherent interference mitigation capabilities of the emerging fluid antenna system (FAS) technology make it a promising candidate for addressing the SI challenge in IBFD systems. This paper thus proposes a FAS-assisted self-interference cancellation (SIC) framework, which leverages a receiver-side FAS to dynamically select an interference-free port. Analytical results include a lower bound and an approximation of the residual SI (RSI) power, both derived for rich-scattering channels by considering the joint spatial correlation amongst the FAS ports. Simulations of RSI power and forward link rates validate the analysis, showing that the SIC performance improves with the number of FAS ports. Additionally, simulations under practical conditions, such as finite-scattering environments and wideband integrated access and backhaul (IAB) channels, reveal that the proposed approach offers superior SIC capability and significant forward rate gains over conventional IBFD SIC schemes.

Three-Dimensional Channel Modeling for Molecular Communications in Tubular Environments with Heterogeneous Boundary Conditions

Molecular communication (MC), one of the emerging techniques in the field of communication, is entering a new phase following several decades of foundational research. Recently, attention has shifted toward MC in liquid media, particularly within tubular environments, due to novel application scenarios. The spatial constraints of such environments make accurate modeling of molecular movement in tubes more challenging than in traditional free-space channels. In this paper, we propose a three-dimensional channel model for molecular communications with an absorbing ring-shaped receiver in a tubular environment. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first theoretical study to model the impact of an absorbing ring-shaped receiver on the channel response in tube-based MC systems. The problem is formulated as a partial differential equation with heterogeneous boundary conditions, and an approximate solution is derived under flow-dominated conditions. The accuracy of the proposed model is validated through particle-based simulations. We anticipate that the results of this study will contribute to the design of practical MC systems in real-world tubular environments.

Performance Analysis of Wireless Communication Systems Assisted by Fluid Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces

This letter investigates the performance of emerging wireless communication systems assisted by a fluid reconfigurable intelligent surface (FRIS). Unlike conventional reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs), an FRIS consists of fluid-inspired metamaterials arranged in a densely packed matrix of sub-elements over a surface. It dynamically activates specific elements for signal reflection and modulation based on real-time channel conditions. Considering a downlink scenario where a base station communicates with a user terminal via a FRIS, we first characterize the statistical behavior of the equivalent end-to-end channel by deriving closed-form approximations for its cumulative distribution and probability density functions. Using these expressions, an analytical approximation for the outage probability and a tight upper bound on the ergodic capacity, including their asymptotic behaviors for high signal-to-noise ratio values, are derived. Our findings reveal key performance trends demonstrating that FRIS can substantially improve link reliability and spectral efficiency compared to conventional RISs, owing to its capability to dynamically select optimal elements from a dense preconfigured grid.

The Tri-Hybrid MIMO Architecture

We present an evolution of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wireless communications known as the tri-hybrid MIMO architecture. In this framework, the traditional operations of linear precoding at the transmitter are distributed across digital beamforming, analog beamforming, and reconfigurable antennas. Compared with the hybrid MIMO architecture, which combines digital and analog beamforming, the tri-hybrid approach introduces a third layer of electromagnetic beamforming through antenna reconfigurability. This added layer offers a pathway to scale MIMO spatial dimensions, important for 6G systems operating in centimeter-wave bands, where the tension between larger bandwidths and infrastructure reuse necessitates ultra-large antenna arrays. We introduce the key features of the tri-hybrid architecture by (i)~reviewing the benefits and challenges of communicating with reconfigurable antennas, (ii)~examining tradeoffs between spectral and energy efficiency enabled by reconfigurability, and (iii)~exploring configuration challenges across the three layers. Overall, the tri-hybrid MIMO architecture offers a new approach for integrating emerging antenna technologies in the MIMO precoding framework.

FIRES: Fluid Integrated Reflecting and Emitting Surfaces

This letter introduces the concept of fluid integrated reflecting and emitting surface (FIRES), which constitutes a new paradigm seamlessly integrating the flexibility of fluid-antenna systems (FASs) with the dual functionality of simultaneous transmitting and reflecting reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (STAR-RISs). The potential of the proposed metasurface structure is studied though an FIRES-enabled multicast system based on the energy splitting protocol. In this model, the FIRES is divided into non-overlapping subareas, each functioning as a 'fluid' element capable of concurrent reflection and transmission and changing its position of radiation within the subarea. In particular, we formulate an optimization problem for the design of the triple tunable features of the surface unit elements, which is solved via a tailored particle swarm optimization approach. Our results showcase that the proposed FIRES architecture significantly outperforms its conventional STAR-RIS counterpart.

Turbocharging Fluid Antenna Multiple Access

We revisit the massive connectivity challenge by considering the case where no CSI is available at the BS and no precoding is used. In this situation, inter-user interference (IUI) mitigation can only be performed at the user terminal (UT) side. Leveraging the position flexibility of fluid antenna system (FAS), we adopt a fluid antenna multiple access (FAMA) approach that exploits the interference signal fluctuation in the spatial domain. Specifically, we assume that we have N spatially correlated received signals per symbol duration from FAS. Our main approach uses a simple heuristic port shortlisting method that identifies promising ports to obtain favourable received signals that can be combined via maximum ratio combining (MRC) to form the received output signal for final detection. On top of this, a pre-trained deep joint source channel coding (JSCC) scheme is employed, which together with a diffusion-based denoising model (MixDDPM) at the UT side, can improve the IUI immunity. We refer to the proposed scheme as turbo FAMA. Simulation results show that with a physical FAS size of 20 wavelengths at each UT transmitting quaternary phase shift keying (QPSK) symbols, fast FAMA can support 50 users while turbo FAMA can handle up to 200 users if the required symbol error rate (SER) is 10 2. If a higher error tolerance is acceptable, say SER at 01, turbo FAMA can even serve up to 1000 users but fast FAMA is only able to handle 160 users, all remarkably achieved without CSI at the BS.

On Fundamental Limits for Fluid Antenna-assisted Integrated Sensing and Communications for Unsourced Random Access

This paper investigates the unsourced random access (URA) problem for integrated sensing and commutations (ISAC). Recent results reveal that conventional multiple access strategies for ISAC such as treating interference as noise (TIN) and time-division multiple access (TDMA) can be easily overwhelmed and fail to support the increasingly surging number of active users. Hence, the unsourced ISAC (UNISAC) system model has emerged as a promising enabler for the future ISAC networks. To advance this work, we adopt a more realistic channel model and propose to utilize fluid antenna system (FAS) for UNISAC. The achievable performance bound and floor of the proposed FAS-UNISAC are derived to validate the great potential. Our results demonstrate that promising improvement on the available user volume and the sensing and communication capability can be obtained due to the spatial diversities inherent within fluid antenna.

UAV-Relay Assisted RSMA Fluid Antenna System: Outage Probability Analysis

This letter studies the impact of fluid antenna system (FAS) technology on the performance of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-assisted multiuser communication networks. Specifically, we consider a scenario where a fixed-position antenna (FPA) base station (BS) serves K FAS-equipped users with the assistance of a UAV acting as an aerial relay. The BS employs rate-splitting multiple access (RSMA), while the UAV operates in half-duplex (HD) mode using the decode-and-forward (DF) strategy. For this system, we derive a compact analytical expression for the outage probability (OP) and its asymptotic behavior in the high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regime, leveraging the multivariate t-distribution. Our results show how deploying FAS at ground users (GUs) in UAV-aided communications improves overall system performance compared to using FPA GUs.
