Quasinormal Ringdown and Echoes in Accreting Exotic Compact Objects

Exotic compact objects (ECOs) may produce late-time gravitational-wave (GW) echoes, but sufficiently compact ECOs undergoing realistic accretion may eventually form an event horizon. We investigate the evolution of quasinormal modes and GW echoes during this transition. Modeling the exterior spacetime with the ingoing Vaidya solution, we numerically evolve scalar perturbations on the resulting dynamical background. We show that the echo signal is progressively compressed and suppressed during accretion and disappears once the growing event horizon engulfs the reflecting surface, after which the waveform smoothly approaches the standard black hole ringdown. Our results identify the disappearance of GW echoes as a characteristic signature of horizon formation and provide a framework for studying dynamical compact objects with future GW observations.

Ladder Symmetry: The Necessary and Sufficient Condition for Vanishing Love Numbers

Black holes in four-dimensional, asymptotically flat general relativity have vanishing static tidal Love numbers (TLNs), a property tied to a hidden symmetry of the perturbation equations. Within the Konoplya-Rezzolla-Zhidenko (KRZ) parametrization, a subclass of spacetimes was previously shown to admit such Ladder symmetry, which enforces the absence of static scalar TLNs. In this work, we introduce parametric deformations to such Ladder-symmetric spacetimes and analyze the resultant linear tidal response. Using the parametrized formalism for TLNs, we show that any deviation from a Ladder-symmetric background leads to non-zero static scalar TLNs. This establishes Ladder symmetry as a necessary, as well as sufficient condition, for the vanishing of static TLNs in static, spherically symmetric black holes and in rotating black holes of the KRZ class.

Exploring Ladder Symmetry and Love Numbers for Static and Rotating Black Holes

Black hole solutions of general relativity exhibit a symmetry for the static perturbations around these spacetimes, known as "ladder symmetry". This symmetry proves useful in constructing a tower of solutions for perturbations and elucidating their general properties. Specifically, the presence of this symmetry leads to vanishing of the tidal love number associated with black holes. In this work, we find the most general spherical symmetric and static black hole spacetime that accommodates this ladder symmetry for scalar perturbation. Furthermore, we extend our calculations beyond spherical symmetry to find the class of stationary Konoplya-Rezzolla-Zhidenko black holes, which also possess a similar ladder structure.
