Oscillating magnetoresistance due to fragile spin structure in metallic GdPd$_3$

Studies on the phenomenon of magnetoresistance (MR) have produced intriguing and application-oriented outcomes for decades--colossal MR, giant MR and recently discovered extremely large MR of millions of percents in semimetals can be taken as examples. We report here the investigation of oscillating MR in a cubic intermetallic compound GdPd$_3$, which is the only compound that exhibits MR oscillations between positive and negative values. Our study shows that a very strong correlation between magnetic, electrical and magnetotransport properties is present in this compound. The magnetic structure in GdPd$_3$ is highly fragile since applied magnetic fields of moderate strength significantly alter the spin arrangement within the system--a behavior that manifests itself in the oscillating MR. Intriguing magnetotransport characteristics of GdPd$_3$ are appealing for field-sensitive device applications, especially if the MR oscillation could materialize at higher temperature by manipulating the magnetic interaction through perturbations caused by chemical substitutions.

Doping of Ga in antiferromagnetic semiconductor alpha-Cr2O3oxide and its effects on modified magnetic and electronic properties

The samples of Ga doped Cr2O3 oxide have been prepared using chemical co-precipitation route. X-ray diffraction pattern and Raman spectra have confirmed rhombohedral crystal structure with space group R3-C. Magnetic measurement has indicated the dilution of antiferromagnetic (AFM) spin order in Ga doped alpha-Cr2O3 system oxide, where the AFM transition temperature of bulk alpha-Cr2O3 oxide at about 320 K has been suppressed and ferrimagnetic behavior is observed from the analysis of the temperature dependence of magnetization data below 350 K. Apart from Ga doping effect, the spin freezing (50 K-70 K) and superparamagnetic behavior of the surface spins at lower temperatures, typically below 50 K, have been exhibited due to nano-sized grains of the samples. All the samples showed non-linear current-voltage (I-V) characteristics. However, I-V characteristics of the Ga doped samples are remarkably different from alpha-Cr2O3 sample. The I-V curves of Ga doped samples have exhibited many unique electronic properties, e.g., bi-stable (low resistance- LR and high resistance-HR) electronic states and negative differential resistance (NDR). Optical absorption spectra revealed three electronic transitions in the samples associated with band gap energy at about 2.67-2.81 eV, 1.91-2.11 eV, 1.28-1.35 eV, respectively.

Interplay between Co-3d and Ce-4f magnetism in CeCoAsO

We have investigated the ground state properties of polycrystalline CeCoAsO by means of magnetization, specific heat and solid state NMR. Susceptibility and specific-heat measurements suggest a ferromagnetic order at about, $T_\mathrm{C}$=75 K. No further transitions are found down to 2 K. At 6.5 K a complex Schottky type of anomaly shows up in the specific heat results. The interplay between Ce-4f and Co-3d magnetism being responsible for that anomaly is discussed. Furthermore $^{75}$As NMR investigations have been performed to probe the magnetism on a microscopic scale. As-NMR spectra are analysed in terms of first and second order quadrupolar interaction. The anisotropic shift component $K_{\mathrm{ab}}$ and $K_{\mathrm{c}}$ could be derived from the $^{75}$As powder spectra. Towards lower temperature a strong shift anisotropy was found. Nonetheless $K_{\mathrm{iso}}$ tracks the bulk susceptibility down to $T=$50 K very well. Furthermore the presence of weak correlations among the Ce ions in the ferromagnetic state is discussed. The observed increase of $C/T$ towards lower temperatures supports this interpretation.

Metal-insulator Crossover Behavior at the Surface of NiS_2

We have performed a detailed high-resolution electron spectroscopic investigation of NiS$_2$ and related Se-substituted compounds NiS$_{2-x}$Se$_x$, which are known to be gapped insulators in the bulk at all temperatures. A large spectral weight at the Fermi energy of the room temperature spectrum, in conjunction with the extreme surface sensitivity of the experimental probe, however, suggests that the surface layer is metallic at 300 K. Interestingly, the evolution of the spectral function with decreasing temperature is characterized by a continuous depletion of the single-particle spectral weight at the Fermi energy and the development of a gap-like structure below a characteristic temperature, providing evidence for a metal-insulator crossover behavior at the surfaces of NiS$_2$ and of related compounds. These results provide a consistent description of the unusual transport properties observed in these systems.

Microwave Properties of Borocarbide Superconductors LnNi2B2C (Ln = Y, Er, Tm, Ho)

We report measurements of the microwave surface impedance of the borocarbide family of superconductors LnNi2B2C (Ln=Y, Er, Tm, Ho). The experiments enable direct measurements of the superfluid density, and are particularly sensitive to the influence of magnetic pairbreaking. In HoNi2B2C the antiferromagnetic transition is clearly observed at zero field, and leads to a drastic reduction of the superfluid density, which recovers at lower temperatures. In ErNi2B2C the antiferromagnetic transition is not seen in zero field data. Magnetic effects are responsible for anomalies in the low temperature surface impedance below approximately 4K in HoNi2B2C and TmNi2B2C. The temperature dependence of the microwave impedance disagrees with simple BCS calculations.
