Boosting Spectral Efficiency with Data-Carrying Reference Signals on the Grassmann Manifold

In wireless networks, frequent reference signal transmission for accurate channel reconstruction may reduce spectral efficiency. To address this issue, we consider to use a data-carrying reference signal (DC-RS) that can simultaneously estimate channel coefficients and transmit data symbols. Here, symbols on the Grassmann manifold are exploited to carry additional data and to assist in channel estimation. Unlike conventional studies, we analyze the channel estimation errors induced by DC-RS and propose an optimization method that improves the channel estimation accuracy without performance penalty. Then, we derive the achievable rate of noncoherent Grassmann constellation assuming discrete inputs in multi-antenna scenarios, as well as that of coherent signaling assuming channel estimation errors modeled by the Gauss-Markov uncertainty. These derivations enable performance evaluation when introducing DC-RS, and suggest excellent potential for boosting spectral efficiency, where interesting crossings with the non-data carrying RS occurred at intermediate signal-to-noise ratios.

Approximation of the spectral action functional in the case of $τ$-compact resolvents

We establish estimates and representations for the remainders of Taylor approximations of the spectral action functional $V\mapstoτ(f(H_0+V))$ on bounded self-adjoint perturbations, where $H_0$ is a self-adjoint operator with $τ$-compact resolvent in a semifinite von Neumann algebra and $f$ belongs to a broad set of compactly supported functions including $n$-times differentiable functions with bounded $n$-th derivative. Our results significantly extend analogous results in \cite{SkAnJOT}, where $f$ was assumed to be compactly supported and $(n+1)$-times continuously differentiable. If, in addition, the resolvent of $H_0$ belongs to the noncommutative $L^n$-space, stronger estimates are derived and extended to noncompactly supported functions with suitable decay at infinity.

Schmidt subspaces of block Hankel operators

In scalar-valued Hardy space, the class of Schmidt subspaces for a bounded Hankel operator are closely related to nearly $S^*$-invariant subspaces, as described by Gérard and Pushnitski. In this article, we prove that these subspaces in the context of vector-valued Hardy spaces are nearly $S^*$-invariant with finite defect in general. As a consequence, we obtain a short proof of the characterization results concerning the Schmidt subspaces in scalar-valued Hardy space in an alternative way. Thus, our work complements the work of Gérard and Pushnitski regarding the structure of Schmidt subspaces.

Estimates and Higher-Order Spectral Shift Measures in Several Variables

In recent years, higher-order trace formulas of operator functions have attracted considerable attention to a large part of the perturbation theory community. In this direction, we prove estimates for traces of higher-order derivatives of multivariable operator functions with associated scalar functions arising from multivariable analytic function space and, as a consequence, derive higher-order spectral shift measures for pairs of tuples of commuting contractions under Hilbert-Schmidt perturbations. These results substantially extend the main results of \cite{Sk15}, where the estimates were proved for traces of first and second-order derivatives of multivariable operator functions. In the context of the existence of higher-order spectral shift measures, our results extend the relative results of \cite{DySk09, PoSkSu14} from a single-variable to a multivariable setting under Hilbert-Schmidt perturbations. Our results rely crucially on heavy uses of explicit expressions of higher-order derivatives of operator functions and estimates of the divided deference of multivariable analytic functions, which are developed in this paper, along with the spectral theorem of tuples of commuting normal operators.

On Isometric Embeddability of $S_q^m$ into $S_p^n$ as non-commutative Quasi-Banach space

The existence of isometric embedding of $S_q^m$ into $S_p^n$, where $1\leq p\neq q\leq \infty$ and $m,n\geq 2$ has been recently studied in \cite{JFA22}. In this article, we extend the study of isometric embeddability beyond the above mentioned range of $p$ and $q$. More precisely, we show that there is no isometric embedding of the commutative quasi-Banach space $\ell_q^m(\R)$ into $\ell_p^n(\R)$, where $(q,p)\in (0,\infty)\times (0,1)$ and $p\neq q$. As non-commutative quasi-Banach spaces, we show that there is no isometric embedding of $S_q^m$ into $S_p^n$, where $(q,p)\in (0,2)\setminus \{1\}\times (0,1)$ $\cup\, \{1\}\times (0,1)\setminus \{\frac{1}{n}:n\in\mathbb{N}\}$ $\cup\, \{\infty\}\times (0,1)\setminus \{\frac{1}{n}:n\in\mathbb{N}\}$ and $p\neq q$. Moreover, in some restrictive cases, we also show that there is no isometric embedding of $S_q^m$ into $S_p^n$, where $(q,p)\in [2, \infty)\times (0,1)$. A new tool in our paper is the non-commutative Clarkson's inequality for Schatten class operators. Other tools involved are the Kato-Rellich theorem and multiple operator integrals in perturbation theory, followed by intricate computations involving power-series analysis.

Isometric Embeddability of $S_q^m$ into $S_p^n$

In this paper, we study existence of isometric embedding of $S_q^m$ into $S_p^n,$ where $1\leq p\neq q\leq \infty$ and $n\geq m\geq 2.$ We show that for all $n\geq m\geq 2$ if there exists a linear isometry from $S_q^m$ into $S_p^n$, where $(q,p)\in(1,\infty]\times(1,\infty) \cup(1,\infty)\setminus\{3\}\times\{1,\infty\}$ and $p\neq q,$ then we must have $q=2.$ This mostly generalizes a classical result of Lyubich and Vaserstein. We also show that whenever $S_q$ embeds isometrically into $S_p$ for $(q,p)\in \left(1,\infty\right)\times\left[2,\infty \right)\cup[4,\infty)\times\{1\} \cup\{\infty\}\times\left( 1,\infty\right)\cup[2,\infty)\times\{\infty\}$ with $p\neq q,$ we must have $q=2.$ Thus, our work complements work of Junge, Parcet, Xu and others on isometric and almost isometric embedding theory on non-commutative $L_p$-spaces. Our methods rely on several new ingredients related to perturbation theory of linear operators, namely Kato-Rellich theorem, theory of multiple operator integrals and Birkhoff-James orthogonality, followed by thorough and careful case by case analysis. The question whether for $m\geq 2$ and $1<q<2,$ $S_q^m$ embeds isometrically into $S_\infty^n$, was left open in \textit{Bull. London Math. Soc.} 52 (2020) 437-447.

Characterization of C-Symmetric Toeplitz operators for a Class of Conjugations in Hardy Spaces

In this article, we introduce a new class of conjugations in the scalar valued Hardy space $H^2_{\mathbb{C}}(\mathbb{D})$ and provide a characterization of a complex symmetric Toeplitz operator $T_ϕ$ with respect to these newly introduced conjugations in various cases. Moreover, we obtain a characterization of a complex symmetric block Toeplitz operator $T_Φ$ on the vector valued Hardy space $\hdct$ with respect to certain conjugations introduced in \cite{CamaGP,KangKoLee,LeeKo2019}.

Higher-order spectral shift for pairs of contractions via multiplicative path

In \cite{Mor}, Marcantognini and Morán obtained Koplienko-Neidhardt trace formula for pairs of contractions and pairs of maximal dissipative operators via multiplicative path. In this article, we prove the existence of higher-order spectral shift functions for pairs of contractions and pairs of maximal dissipative operators via multiplicative path by adapting the argument employed in \cite{Mor}.

Koplienko-Neidhardt trace formula for unitaries $-$ A new proof

Koplienko \cite{Ko} found a trace formula for perturbations of self-adjoint operators by operators of Hilbert-Schmidt class $\mathcal{B}_2(\mathcal{H})$. Later in 1988, a similar formula was obtained by Neidhardt \cite{NH} in the case of unitary operators. In this article, we give a still another proof of Koplienko-Neidhardt trace formula in the case of unitary operators by reducing the problem to a finite dimensional one as in the proof of Krein's trace formula by Voiculescu \cite{Voi}, Sinha and Mohapatra \cite{MoSi94,MoSi96}.

Almost invariant subspaces of the shift operator on vector-valued Hardy spaces

In this article, we characterize nearly invariant subspaces of finite defect for the backward shift operator acting on the vector-valued Hardy space which is a vectorial generalization of a result of Chalendar-Gallardo-Partington (C-G-P). Using this characterization of nearly invariant subspace under the backward shift we completely describe the almost invariant subspaces for the shift and its adjoint acting on the vector valued Hardy space.

Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface (RIS)-Enhanced Two-Way OFDM Communications

In this paper, we focus on the reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-enhanced two-way device-to-device (D2D) multi-pair orthogonal-frequency-division-multiplexing (OFDM) communication systems. Specifically, we maximize the minimum bidirectional weighted sum-rate by jointly optimizing the sub-band allocation, the power allocation and the discrete phase shift (PS) design at the RIS. To tackle the main difficulty of the non-convex PS design at the RIS, we firstly formulate a semi-definite relaxation problem and further devise a low-complexity solution for the PS design by leveraging the projected sub-gradient method. We demonstrate the desirable performance gain for the proposed designs through numerical results.

Kernels of Perturbed Toeplitz Operators in vector-valued Hardy spaces

Recently, Liang and Partington \cite{YP} show that kernels of finite-rank perturbations of Toeplitz operators are nearly invariant with finite defect under the backward shift operator acting on the scalar-valued Hardy space. In this article we provide a vectorial generalization of a result of Liang and Partington. As an immediate application we identify the kernel of perturbed Toeplitz operator in terms of backward shift-invariant subspaces in various important cases by applying the recent theorem (\cite{CDP, OR}) in connection with nearly invariant subspaces of finite defect for the backward shift operator acting on the vector-valued Hardy space.

Hybrid Precoding Design for Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface aided mmWave Communication Systems

In this letter, we focus on the hybrid precoding (HP) design for the reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) aided multi-user (MU) millimeter wave (mmWave) communication systems. Specifically, we aim to minimize the mean-squared-error (MSE) between the received symbols and the transmitted symbols by jointly optimizing the analog-digital HP at the base-station (BS) and the phase shifts (PSs) at the RIS, where the non-convex element-wise constant-modulus constraints for the analog precoding and the PSs are tackled by resorting to the gradient-projection (GP) method. We analytically prove the convergence of the proposed algorithm and demonstrate the desirable performance gain for the proposed design through numerical results.

Computation Offloading for IoT in C-RAN: Optimization and Deep Learning

We consider computation offloading for Internet-of-things (IoT) applications in multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) cloud-radio-access-network (C-RAN). Due to the limited battery life and computational capability in the IoT devices (IoTDs), the computational tasks of the IoTDs are offloaded to a MIMO C-RAN, where a MIMO radio resource head (RRH) is connected to a baseband unit (BBU) through a capacity-limited fronthaul link, facilitated by the spatial filtering and uniform scalar quantization. We formulate a computation offloading optimization problem to minimize the total transmit power of the IoTDs while satisfying the latency requirement of the computational tasks, and find that the problem is non-convex. To obtain a feasible solution, firstly the spatial filtering matrix is locally optimized at the MIMO RRH. Subsequently, we leverage the alternating optimization framework for joint optimization on the residual variables at the BBU, where the baseband combiner is obtained in a closed-form, the resource allocation sub-problem is solved through successive inner convexification, and the number of quantization bits is obtained by a line-search method. As a low-complexity approach, we deploy a supervised deep learning method, which is trained with the solutions to our optimization algorithm. Numerical results validate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm and the deep learning method.

Robust Hybrid Precoding for Beam Misalignment in Millimeter-Wave Communications

In this paper, we focus on the phenomenon of beam misalignment in Millimeter-wave (mmWave) multi-receiver communication systems, and propose robust hybrid precoding designs that alleviate the performance loss caused by this effect. We consider two distinct design methodologies: I) the synthesis of a `flat mainlobe' beam model which maximizes the minimum effective array gain over the beam misalignment range, and II) the inclusion of the `error statistics' into the design, where the array response incorporating the distribution of the misalignment error is derived. For both design methodologies, we propose a hybrid precoding design that approximates the robust fully-digital precoder, which is obtained via alternating optimization based on the gradient projection (GP) method. We also propose a low-complexity alternative to the GP algorithm based on the least square projection (LSP), and we further deploy a second-stage digital precoder to mitigate any residual inter-receiver interference after the hybrid analog-digital precoding. Numerical results show that the robust hybrid precoding designs can effectively alleviate the performance degradation incurred by beam misalignment.

Hybrid Precoder and Combiner for Imperfect Beam Alignment in mmWave MIMO Systems

In this letter, we aim to design a robust hybrid precoder and combiner against beam misalignment in millimeter-wave (mmWave) communication systems. We consider the inclusion of the `error statistics' into the precoder and combiner design, where the array response that incorporates the distribution of the misalignment error is first derived. An iterative algorithm is then proposed to design the robust hybrid precoder and combiner to maximize the array gain in the presence of beam misalignment. To further enhance the spectral efficiency, a second-stage digital precoder and combiner are included to mitigate the inter-stream interference. Numerical results show that the proposed robust hybrid precoder and combiner design can effectively alleviate the performance degradation incurred by beam misalignment.

Analysis of Full-Duplex Downlink Using Diversity Gain

The paper carries out performance analysis of a multiuser full-duplex (FD) communication system. Multiple FD UEs share the same spectrum resources, simultaneously, at both the uplink and downlink. This results in co-channel interference (CCI) at the downlink of a UE from uplink signals of other UEs. This work proposes the use of diversity gain at the receiver to mitigate the effects of the CCI. For this an architecture for the FD eNB and FD UE is proposed and corresponding downlink operation is described. Finally, the performance of the system is studied in terms of downlink capacity of a UE. It is shown that through the deployment of sufficient number of transmit and receive antennas at the eNB and UEs, respectively, significant improvement in performance can be achieved in the presence of CCI.

Analysis of Path Loss mitigation through Dynamic Spectrum Access: Software Defined Radio

In this paper, an analysis is carried out for a method to mitigate the path loss through the dynamic spectrum access (DSA) method. The path loss is a major component which determines the QoS of a wireless link. Its effect is complemented by the presence of obstruction between the transmitter and receiver. The future cellular network (5G) focuses on operating with the millimeter-wave (mmW). In higher frequency, path loss can play a significant role in degrading the link quality due to higher attenuation. In a scenario, where the operating environment is changing dynamically, sudden degradation of operating conditions or arrival of obstruction between transmitter and receiver may result in link failure. The method analyzed here includes dynamically allocating spectrum at a lower frequency band for a link suffering from high path loss. For the analysis, a wireless link was set up using Universal Software Radio Peripherals (USRPs). The received power is observed to increase by dynamically changing the operating frequency from 1.9 GHz to 830 MHz. Finally the utility of software defined radio (SDR) in the RF front end, to combat the path loss in the future cellular networks, is studied.
