Quantum oscillations and the Fermi-surface topology of the Weyl semimetal NbP

The Weyl semimetal NbP was found to exhibit topological Fermi arcs and exotic magneto-transport properties. Here, we report on magnetic quantum-oscillation measurements on NbP and construct the 3D Fermi surface with the help of band-structure calculations. We reveal a pair of spin-orbit-split electron pockets at the Fermi energy and a similar pair of hole pockets, all of which are strongly anisotropic. The Fermi surface well explains the linear magnetoresistance observed in high magnetic fields by the quantum-limit scenario. The Weyl points that are located in the $k_z \approx π/c$ plane are found to exist 5 meV above the Fermi energy. Therefore, we predict that the chiral anomaly effect can be realized in NbP by electron doping to drive the Fermi energy to the Weyl points.

Negative magnetoresistance without well-defined chirality in the Weyl semimetal TaP

Weyl semimetals (WSMs) are topological quantum states wherein the electronic bands linearly disperse around pairs of nodes, the Weyl points, of fixed (left or right) chirality. The recent discovery of WSM materials triggered an experimental search for the exotic quantum phenomenon known as the chiral anomaly. Via the chiral anomaly nonorthogonal electric and magnetic fields induce a chiral density imbalance that results in an unconventional negative longitudinal magnetoresistance, the chiral magnetic effect. Recent theoretical work suggests that this effect does not require well-defined Weyl nodes. Experimentally however, it remains an open question to what extent it survives when chirality is not well-defined, for example when the Fermi energy is far away from the Weyl points. Here, we establish the detailed Fermi surface topology of the recently identified WSM TaP via a combination of angle-resolved quantum oscillation spectra and band structure calculations. The Fermi surface forms spin-polarized banana-shaped electron and hole pockets attached to pairs of Weyl points. Although the chiral anomaly is therefore ill-defined, we observe a large negative magnetoresistance (NMR) appearing for collinear magnetic and electric fields as observed in other WSMs. In addition, we show experimental signatures indicating that such longitudinal magnetoresistance measurements can be affected by an inhomogeneous current distribution inside the sample in a magnetic field. Our results provide a clear framework how to detect the chiral magnetic effect.

Design of compensated ferrimagnetic Heusler alloys for giant tunable exchange bias

The discovery of materials with improved functionality can be accelerated by rational material design. Heusler compounds with tunable magnetic sublattices allow to implement this concept to achieve novel magnetic properties. Here, we have designed a family of Heusler alloys with a compensated ferrimagnetic state. In the vicinity of the compensation composition in Mn-Pt-Ga, a giant exchange bias (EB) of more than 3 T and a similarly large coercivity are established. The large exchange anisotropy originates from the exchange interaction between the compensated host and ferrimagnetic clusters that arise from intrinsic anti-site disorder. We demonstrate the applicability of our design concept on a second material, Mn-Fe-Ga, with a magnetic transition above room temperature, exemplifying the universality of the concept and the feasibility of room-temperature applications. Our study points to a new direction for novel magneto-electronic devices. At the same time it suggests a new route for realizing rare-earth free exchange-biased hard magnets, where the second quadrant magnetization can be stabilized by the exchange bias.

Extremely large magnetoresistance and ultrahigh mobility in the topological Weyl semimetal NbP

Recent experiments have revealed spectacular transport properties of conceptually simple semimetals. For example, normal semimetals (e.g. WTe$_2$) have started a new trend to realize a large magnetoresistance, which is the change of electrical resistance by an external magnetic field. Weyl semimetal (WSM) is a topological semimetal with massless relativistic electrons as the three-dimensional analogue of graphene and promises exotic transport properties and surface states, which are different from those of the famous topological insulators (TIs). In this letter, we choose to utilize NbP in magneto-transport experiments because its band structure is on assembly of a WSM and a normal semimetal. Such a combination in NbP indeed leads to the observation of remarkable transport properties, an extremely large magnetoresistance of 850,000 % at 1.85 K (250 % at room temperature) in a magnetic field of 9 T without any signs of saturation, and ultrahigh carrier mobility of 5$\times$10$^6$ cm$^2$ V$^{-1}$ s$^{-1}$ accompanied by strong Shubnikov-de Hass (SdH) oscillations. NbP presents a unique example to consequent design the functionality of materials by combining the topological and conventional phases.

Large linear magnetoresistance and weak anti-localization in Y(Lu)PtBi topological insulators

Topological insulators are new kind of Dirac materials that possess bulk insulating and surface conducting behavior. They are basically known for their unique electronic properties at the surface. Here we present the magneto-transport properties of our high quality single crystalline Y(Lu)PtBi Heusler topological insulators, which belong to a group of noncentrosymmetric superconductor with Tc = 0:8 K. Both the compounds show semi-metallic behavior with low charge carrier of 6 x1018 cm^-3 for YPtBi and 8 x1019 cm^-3 for LuPtBi at 2 K. Magneto-conductivity measurements in the tilted field indicate that the charge carriers transport through quantum interference. This provide a direct evidence of weak anti-localization below 50 K, giving a strong signature of surface transport. Most importantly, these compounds show very high unsaturated linear magnetoresistance of approximately 2000% at 10 K in a magnetic field of 60 T.

Hydrostatic pressure: A very effective approach to significantly enhance critical current density in granular Sr4V2O6Fe2As2 superconductor

Pressure is well known to significantly raise the superconducting transition temperature, Tc, in both iron pnictides and cuprate based superconductors. Little work has been done, however, on how pressure can affect the flux pinning and critical current density in the Fe-based superconductors. Here, we propose to use hydrostatic pressure to significantly enhance flux pinning and Tc in polycrystalline pnictide bulks. We have chosen Sr4V2O6Fe2As2 polycrystalline samples as a case study. We demonstrate that the hydrostatic pressure up to 1.2 GPa can not only significantly increase Tc from 15 K (underdoped) to 22 K, but also significantly enhance the irreversibility field, Hirr, by a factor of 4 at 7 K, as well as the critical current density, Jc, by up to 30 times at both low and high fields. It was found that pressure can induce more point defects, which are mainly responsible for the Jc enhancement. In addition, we found that the transformation from surface pinning to point pinning induced by pressure was accompanied by a reduction of anisotropy at high temperatures. Our findings provide an effective method to significantly enhance Tc, Jc, Hirr, and the upper critical field, Hc2, for other families of Fe-based superconductors in the forms of wires/tapes, films, and single crystal and polycrystalline bulks.

Evidence of surface transport and weak anti-localization in single crystal of Bi2Te2Se topological insulator

Topological insulators are known to their metallic surface states, a result of strong-spin-orbital coupling, that show unique surface transport phenomenon. But these surface transports are buried in presence of metallic bulk conduction. We synthesized very high quality Bi$_2$Te$_2$Se single crystals by modified Bridgman method, that possess high bulk resistivity of $>$20~$Ω$cm below 20~K, whereas the bulk is mostly inactive and surface transport dominates. Temperature dependence resistivity follows the activation law like a gap semiconductor in temperature range 20-300~K. We designed a special measurement geometry, which aims to extract the surface transport from the bulk. This special geometry is applied to measure the resistance and found that Bi$_2$Te$_2$Se single crystal exhibits a cross over from bulk to surface conduction at 20~K. Simultaneously, the material also shows strong evidence of weak anti-localization in magneto-transport due to the protection against scattering by conducting surface states. This novel simple geometry is an easy route to find the evidence of surface transport in topological insulators, which are the promising materials for future spintronic applications.

Direct observation of band bending in topological insulator Bi2Se3

The surface band bending tunes considerably the surface band structures and transport properties in topological insulators. We present a direct measurement of the band bending on the Bi2Se3 by using the bulk sensitive angular-resolved hard x-ray photospectroscopy (HAXPES). We tracked the depth dependence of the energy shift of Bi and Se core states. We estimate that the band bending extends up to about 20 nm into the bulk with an amplitude of 0.23--0.26 eV, consistent with profiles previously deduced from the binding energies of surface states in this material.

Kinetic arrest related to a first-order ferrimagnetic to antiferromagnetic transition in the Heusler compound Mn2PtGa

We report a magnetization study of the Heusler compound Mn2PtGa that shows the existence of a magnetic-glass state. Mn2PtGa shows a first-order ferromagnetic (FM)/ferrimagnetic (FI) to antiferromagnetic (AFM) transition in contrast to the martensitic structural transition observed in several Heusler alloys. The kinetic arrest of this first-order FM (FI) to AFM transition leads to the observed magnetic-glass behavior. We show that the strength of the applied magnetic field, which is the primary parameter to induce the magnetic-glass state, is also responsible for the stability of the supercooled FM (FI) phase in time.

Upper critical field, critical current density and thermally activated flux flow in CaFFe0.9Co0.1As superconductor

In this paper, we report the synthesis, structure, transition temperature, upper critical field, critical current density and thermally activated flux flow in CaFFe0.9Co0.1As superconductor. Superconductivity arises at 23 K by Co substitution at the site of Fe atoms and upper critical field is estimated 102 T by using the Werthamer-Helfand-Hohenberg formula. The flux-flow activation energy (U0/kB) varies from 3230 K and 4190 K in the field of 1 T and 9 T respectively. At 2K, the Jc is found to be approximately 4x10^3A/cm^2 and 0.3x10^3 A/cm&^2 in zero and 6T field, respectively. Transmission electron microscopy analysis shows an amorphous region surrounding around most of the grains which is likely to be present in the form of amorphous and weak link grain boundaries in this compound. It seems that most of the current is hindered by miss aligned grains, amorphous grain boundaries and impurities, which are invariably found between the grains. Presence of the weakly linked granules and their weakly pinned intergranular Josephson vortices are responsible for both low Jc and the Arrhenius temperature dependence of resistivity

Synthesis and Microstructural Studies of Iron Oxypnictide LaO1-xFxFeAs Superconductors

We report on the synthesis and structural/ microstructural studies of iron based fluorine doped LaOFeAs superconductors. We have successfully synthesized fluorine doped superconducting LaO1-xFxFeAs materials by choosing lower temperature (1150^0C) and longer synthesis duration (60 hours) as compared to the standard values of these employed in the pioneering first contribution [Kamihara et al 2008 J Am Chem Soc 130 3296]. Decrease of lattice parameters as determined by x-ray diffraction confirm the substitution of fluorine. The superconducting transition temperature is 27.5 K which is observed at doping level of x=0.2. This superconducting material LaO1-xFxFeAs exhibits interesting microstructural characteristic. This relates to the existence of another structural phase, besides the standard phase, having c parameters of ~12.67A. This suggests existence of modulated structure, similar to the cuprates, in these new oxypnictides. This phase may have new impacts on this new high-Tc family.

Enhancement of flux pinning and high critical current density in graphite doped MgB2 superconductor

We report the synthesis and characterization of graphite (C) doped MgB2-xCx (x = 0.0, 0.1, 0.2 and 0.3) samples. The crystal structure and microstructural characterization have been investigated by x-ray diffractometer and transmission electron microscopic (TEM) analysis. The superconducting properties especially Jc and Hc2 have been measured by employing physical property measurement system. We found that the graphite doping affects the lattice parameters as well as the microstructure of MgB2 superconductor. In case of optimally doped (x=0.1) sample, the critical current density at 5K corresponds to 1.1 x 10^6 and 5.3 x 10^4 A/cm^2 for 3T and 5T fields respectively. The upper critical field has been enhanced nearly two times after doping. The flux pinning behavior has been investigated by flux pinning force density curve and it reveals that the flux pinning behaviour has improved significantly by doping. TEM micrographs show the graphite nanoparticles of size ~5-10 nm which are invariably present in MgB2 grains. These nanoparticles act as flux pinning centre and are responsible for enhancement of superconducting properties of MgB2.

High critical current density and improved flux pinning in bulk MgB2 synthesized by Ag addition

In the present investigation, we report a systematic study of Ag admixing in MgB2 prepared by solid-state reaction at ambient pressure. All the samples in the present investigation have been subjected to structural/ microstructural characterization employing x-rays diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopic (TEM) techniques. The magnetization measurements were performed by physical property measurement system (PPMS). The TEM investigations reveal the formation of MgAg nanoparticles in Ag admixed samples. These nanoparticles may enhance critical current density due to their size (~5-20 nm) compatible with coherence length of MgB2 (~5-6 nm). In order to study the flux pinning effect of Ag admixing in MgB2, the evaluation of intragrain critical current density (Jc) has been carried out through magnetic measurements on the fine powdered version of the as synthesized samples. The optimum result on intragrain Jc is obtained for 10 at.% Ag admixed sample at 5K. This corresponds to 9.23x10^7 A/cm^2 in self-field,5.82x10^7 A/cm^2 at 1T,4.24 x10^6 A/cm^2 at 3.6T and 1.52x10^5 A/cm^2 at 5T. However, intragrain Jc values for MgB2 sample without Ag admixing are 2.59x10^6 A/cm^2,1.09x10^6A/cm^2,4.53x10^4 A/cm^2 and 2.91x10^3A/cm^2 at 5 K in self field, 1T, 3.6T and 5T respectively.. The high value of intragrain Jc for Ag admixed MgB2 superconductor has been attributed to the inclusion of MgAg nanoparticles into the crystal matrix of MgB2, which are capable of providing effective flux pinning centres. A feasible correlation between microstructural features and superconducting properties has been put forward.

Improved Critical Current Density of MgB2 Carbon Nanotubes (CNTs) Composite

In the present study, we report a systematic study of doping/ admixing of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in different concentrations in MgB2. The composite material corresponding to MgB2+ x at.%CNTs (35 at.% > x > 0 at.%) have been prepared by solid-state reaction at ambient pressure. All the samples in the present investigation have been subjected to structural/ microstructural characterization employing XRD, SEM and TEM techniques. The magnetization measurements were performed by PPMS and Tc & Jct measurements have been done by the four-probe technique. The microstructural investigations reveal the formation of MgB2-CNTs composites. A CNT connecting the MgB2 grains may enhance critical current density due to its size (~ 5-20 nm diameter) compatible with coherence length of MgB2 (~ 5-6 nm) and ballistic transport current carrying capability along the tube axis. The Jct of MgB2 samples with varying CNTs concentration have been found to vary significantly e.g. Jct of the MgB2 sample with 10 at.% CNT addition is ~2.3 x 10^3 A/cm2 and its value for MgB2 sample without CNT addition is ~7.2x10^2 A/cm2 at 20K. The optimum result on Jc is obtained for 10 at.% CNTs admixed MgB2 sample at 5K, the Jc reaches ~5.2 x10^6 A/cm2 in self field, ~1.6 x 10^6 A/cm2 at 1T, ~2.9 x 10^5 A/cm2 at 2.6T and \~3.9 x 10^4 A/cm2 at 4T. The high value of intragrain Jc in 10 at.% CNTs admixed MgB2 superconductor has been attributed to the incorporation of CNTs into the crystal matrix of MgB2, which are capable of providing effective flux pinning centres. A feasible correlation between microstructural features and superconducting properties has been put forward.

Effect of La Doping on Microstructure and Critical Current Density of MgB2

In the present study, La-doped MgB_2 superconductors with different doping level (Mg1-xLaxB2; x=0.00, 0.01, 0.03 & 0.05) have been synthesized by solid-state reaction route at ambient pressure. Effect of La doping have been investigated in relation to microstructural characteristics and superconducting properties, particularly intragrain critical current density (Jc). The microstructural characteristics of the as synthesized Mg(La)B2 compounds were studied employing transmission electron microscopic (TEM) technique. The TEM investigations reveal inclusion of LaB6 nanoparticles within the MgB2 grains which provide effective flux pinning centres. The evaluation of intragrain Jc through magnetic measurements on the fine powdered version of the as synthesized samples reveal that Jc of the samples change significantly with the doping level. The optimum result on Jc is obtained for Mg0.97La0.03B2 at 5K, the Jc reaches ~1.4x107A/cm2 in self field, ~2.1 x 106A/cm2 at 1T, ~2.5 x 105A/cm2 at 2.5T and ~1.8 x 104 A/cm2 at 4.5T. The highest value of intragrain Jc in Mg0.97La0.03B2 superconductor has been attributed to the inclusion of LaB6 nanoparticles which are capable of providing effective flux pinning centres.
