Nuclear isospin asymmetry in $α$ decays of heavy nuclei

The effects of nuclear isospin asymmetry on $α$ decay lifetimes of heavy nuclei are investigated within various phenomenological models of nuclear potential for the $α$ particle. We consider the widely used simple square well potential and Woods-Saxon potential, and modify them by including an isospin asymmetry term. We then suggest a model for the potential of the $α$ particle motivated by a microscopic phenomenological approach of the Skyrme force model, which naturally introduce the isospin dependent form of the nuclear potential for the $α$ particle. The empirical $α$ decay lifetime formula of Viola and Seaborg is also modified to include isospin asymmetry effects. The obtained $α$ decay half-lives are in good agreement with the experimental data and we find that including the nuclear isospin effects somehow improves the theoretical results for $α$ decay half-lives. The implications of these results are discussed and the predictions on the $α$ decay lifetimes of superheavy elements are also presented.

New Photodisintegration Model of GEANT4 for the $dγ\to np$ Reaction with a Dibaryon Effective Field Theory

We develop a new hadronic model for GEANT4 that is specialized for the disintegration of the deuteron by photons, $dγ\to n p$. For the description of two-nucleon interactions, we employ a pionless effective field theory with dibaryon fields (dEFT). We apply the new model of GEANT4 (G4dEFT) to the calculations of the total and the differential cross sections in $dγ\to n p$ and compare the results with empirical data. As an application of the new model, we calculate the neutron yield from the $γ+ {\rm CD}_2$ process. G4dEFT predicts peaks for the neutron yield, but the existing model of GEANT4 does not show such behavior.

Strangeness in Neutron Star Cooling

We study the thermal evolution of neutron stars in the presence of hyperons or kaons in the core. Our results indicate that the nucleon and hyperon direct Urca processes play crucial roles for the cooling of neutron stars. The presence of hyperons drives fast cooling mechanisms in two ways: 1) it allows the hyperon direct Urca prior to the nucleon direct Urca, 2) and it makes the nucleon direct Urca more feasible by reducing the neutron Fermi momentum. We found that the neutron star equation of state (EOS) with hyperons can be consistent with both mass and temperature observations. We also found that the neutron star EOS with kaon condensation can be consistent with observations, even though the cooling behavior is seldom useful to identify or isolate the effect of kaon condensation.

Parity-violating $πNN$ coupling constant from the flavor-conserving effective weak chiral Lagrangian

We investigate the parity-violating pion-nucleon-nucleon coupling constant $h^1_{πNN}$, based on the chiral quark-soliton model. We employ an effective weak Hamiltonian that takes into account the next-to-leading order corrections from QCD to the weak interactions at the quark level. Using the gradient expansion, we derive the leading-order effective weak chiral Lagrangian with the low-energy constants determined. The effective weak chiral Lagrangian is incorporated in the chiral quark-soliton model to calculate the parity-violating $πNN$ constant $h^1_{πNN}$. We obtain a value of about $10^{-7}$ at the leading order. The corrections from the next-to-leading order reduce the leading order result by about 20~\%.

Hyperon Puzzle of Neutron Stars with Skyrme Force Models

We consider the so called hyperon puzzle of neutron star (NS). We employ Skyrme force models for the description of in-medium nucleon-nucleon, nucleon-Lambda hyperon ($NΛ$), and Lambda-Lambda ($ΛΛ$) interactions. A phenomenological finite-range force for the $ΛΛ$ interaction is considered as well. Equation of state (EoS) of NS matter is obtained in the framework of density functional theory, and Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff equations are solved to obtain the mass-radius relations of NSs. It has been generally known that the existence of hyperons in the NS matter is not well supported by the recent discovery of large-mass NSs ($M \simeq 2 M_\odot$) since hyperons make the EoS softer than the one without them. For the selected interaction models, $NΛ$ interactions reduce the maximum mass of NS by about 30~\%, while $ΛΛ$ interactions can give about 10~\% enhancement. Consequently, we find that some Skyrme force models predict the maximum mass of NS consistent with the observation of $2 M_\odot$ NSs, and at the same time satisfy observationally constrained mass-radius relations.

Kaon Condensation in Neutron Stars with Skyrme-Hartree-Fock Models

We investigate nuclear matter equations of state in neutron star with kaon condensation. It is generally known that the existence of kaons in neutron star makes the equation of state soft so that the maximum mass of neutron star is not likely to be greater than 2.0 $M_{\odot}$, the maximum mass constrained by current observations. With existing Skyrme force model parameters, we calculate nuclear equations of state and check the possibility of kaon condensation in the core of neutron stars. The results show that even with the kaon condensation, the nuclear equation of state satisfies both the maximum mass and the allowed ranges of mass and radius.

Effective range corrections from effective field theory with di-baryon fields and perturbative pions

Contributions of perturbative pions around a non-trivial fixed point are studied by utilizing di-baryon fields. We calculate ${}^1S_0$ and ${}^3S_1$ phase shifts for the $np$ scattering at low energies up to one-pion-exchange contributions. We also calculate effective range parameters, $v_2$, $v_3$ and $v_4$ in the higher order of the effective range expansion, and obtain corrections of the effective range to the expressions previously reported by Cohen and Hansen. After the scattering length and the effective range are renormalized, we study the role of renormailzation scale parameter $μ$ and discuss the range of validity of the theory.

Parity-violating $πN N$ coupling constant in the chiral quark-soliton model

We investigate the parity-violating $πNN$ Yukawa coupling constant $h^1_{πNN}$ within the framework of the SU(2) chiral quark-soliton model, based on the $ΔS=0$ effective weak Lagrangian derived within the same framework. We find that the parity-violating $πNN$ coupling constant is about $1\times10^{-8}$ at the scale of 1 GeV. The results of $h_{πNN}^1$ turn out to be sensitive to the Wilson coefficient. We discuss how the gluonic renormalization supresses the parity-violating $πNN$ coupling constant.

Hyperon and nuclear symmetry energy in the neutron star

In this work, masses and radii of neutron stars are considered to investigate the effect of nuclear symmetry energy to the astrophysical observables. A relativistic mean field model with density-dependent meson-baryon coupling constants is employed in describing the equation of state of dense nuclear matter, and the density dependencies of the symmetry energies are quoted from the recent phenomenological formulae obtained from the heavy ion data at subnuclear saturation densities. Since hyperons can take part in the $β$-equilibrium of the dense matter inside neutron stars, we include hyperons in our estimation and their roles are discussed in combination with that of the nuclear symmetry energy.

Low energy proton-proton scattering in effective field theory

Low energy proton-proton scattering is studied in pionless effective field theory. Employing the dimensional regularization and MS-bar and power divergence subtraction schemes for loop calculation, we calculate the scattering amplitude in 1S0 channel up to next-to-next-to leading order and fix low-energy constants that appear in the amplitude by effective range parameters. We study regularization scheme and scale dependence in separation of Coulomb interaction from the scattering length and effective range for the S-wave proton-proton scattering.

Compatibility of Exotic States with Neutron Star Observation

We consider the effect of hard core repulsion in the baryon-baryon interaction at short distance to the properties of a neutron star. We obtain that, even with hyperons in the interior of a neutron star, the neutron star mass can be as large as $\sim 2 M_\odot$.

Effective field theory of the deuteron with dibaryon field

Pionless effective field theory with dibaryon fields is reexamined for observables involving the deuteron. The electromagnetic form factors of the deuteron and the total cross sections of radiative neutron capture on the proton, $np \to dγ$, are calculated. The low energy constants of vector(photon)-dibaryon-dibaryon vertices in the effective lagrangian are fixed primarily by the one-body vector(photon)-nucleon-nucleon interactions. This scheme for fixing the values of the low energy constants satisfactorily reproduces the results of the effective range theory. We also show that, by including higher order corrections, one can obtain results that are close to those of Argonne v18 potential model.

Effects of Meson Mass Reduction on the Properties of Neutron Star Matter

We investigate the effects of meson-mass reduction on the properties of the neutron star matter. We adopt the Brown-Rho scaling law to take into account density dependence of meson masses in the quantum hadrodynamics, quark-meson coupling and modified quark-meson coupling models. It is found that the equation of state becomes stiff when the mass of meson is reduced in dense medium. We discuss its implication on the properties of the neutron star.

The Anapole Moment of the Deuteron with the Argonne v18 Nucleon-Nucleon Interaction Model

We calculate the deuteron anapole moment with the wave functions obtained from the Argonne $v18$ nucleon-nucleon interaction model. The anapole moment operators are considered at the leading order. To minimize the uncertainty due to a lack of current conservation, we calculate the matrix element of the anapole moment from the original definition. In virtue of accurate wave functions, we can obtain a more precise value of the deuteron anapole moment which contains less uncertainty than the former works. We obtain a result reduced by more than 25% in the magnitude of the deuteron anapole moment. The reduction of individual nuclear contributions is much more important however, varying from a factor 2 for the spin part to a factor 4 for the convection and associated two-body currents.

Asymmetry in $\vec{n} + p -> d + γ$

Heavy-baryon chiral perturbation theory (HBChPT) is applied to the asymmetry $A_γ$ in $\vec{n} + p \to d + γ$ at threshold, which arises due to the weak parity non-conserving interactions. Instead of appealing to Siegert's theorem, transition operators up to next-to-leading chiral order are derived and the corresponding amplitudes are evaluated with the Argonne $v_{18}$ wavefunctions. In addition to the impulse contribution, both parity-conserving and parity-non-conserving two-body one-pion-exchange diagrams appear up to this order. Our prediction for the asymmetry is $A_γ= - 0.10 \hpiNN$, which is close to the Siegert's theorem based result, $A_γ\simeq -0.11 \hpiNN$. This illustrates that HBChPT is effective in the parity-non-conserving physics.
