Potential-tuned magnetic switches and half-metallicity transition in zigzag graphene nanoribbons

Realizing controllable room-temperature ferromagnetism in carbon-based materials is one of recent prospects. The magnetism in graphene nanostructures reported previously is mostly formed near the vacancies, zigzag edges, or impurities by breaking the local sublattice imbalance, though a bulk chiral spin-density-wave ground state is also reported at van Hove filling due to its perfectly nested Fermi surface. Here, combining of the first-principles and tight-binding model simulations, we predict a robust ferromagnetic domain lies between the inter-chain carbon atoms inside the zigzag graphene nanoribbons by applying a potential drop. We show that the effective zigzag edges provide the strong correlation background through narrowing the band width, while the internal Van Hove filling provides the strong ferromagnetic background inherited from the bulk. The induced ferromagnetism exhibit interesting switching effect when the nominal Van Hove filling crosses the intra- and inter-chain region by tuning the potential drops. We further observe a robust half-metallicity transition from one spin channel to another within the same magnetic phase. These novel properties provide promising ways to manipulate the spin degree of freedom in graphene nanostructures.

Topological superconductivity in a topological insulator

Topological superconductivity is an exotic quantum phenomenon with coupled nontrivial topological order and superconductivity together. A direct idea for producing topological superconductors is to create superconductivity based on the well recognized topological insulators. The topological insulating states in highly efficient thermoelectric materials Bi$_2$Te$_3$ and Bi$_2$Se$_3$ and their alloy Bi$_{2}$Te$_{3-x}$Se$_{x}$ have been established from angle-resolved photoemission and transport experiments. Superconductivity was also observed based on these popular topological insulators by the application of pressure chemical dopant and heterostructures. However, the experiments mainly focusing on Bi$_{2}$Se$_3$ doped by metals have not provided the consistent evidence to support the topological superconductivity. Here we carry out a systematic high-pressure study on a topological insulator Bi$_{2}$Te$_{2.7}$Se$_{0.3}$ to provide the convincing evidence for the expected topological superconductivity. Four phases with different structures are found upon compression. The topological surface state is identified in the entire initial phase, while superconductivity is found to coexist with such a state of the compressed material after its passing the electronic topological transition, followed by three other superconducting phases without topological character. For these superconducting phases, we observe that the upper critical field follows with the temperature in the critical exponent ${2/3}$ for the first one with the topological surface state and $1$ for the left. These observations support the realization of the topological superconductivity in the initial phase according to the theoretically proposed critical field measure. This work also points out a big pool and new direction for finding topological superconductors from topological thermoelectric materials.

Bosonic fractional Chern insulating state at integer fillings in multi-band system

The integer quantum Hall state occurs when the Landau levels are fully occupied by the fermions, while the fractional quantum Hall state usually emerges when the Landau level is partially filled by the strongly correlated fermions or bosons. Here, we report two fractional Chern insulating states of the hard-core bosons in a multi-band lattice model hosting topological flat bands with high Chern number. The previously proposed $ν=1/3$ fractional Chern insulating state inherited from the high Chern number $C=2$ of the lowest topological flat band is revisited by the infinite density matrix renormalization group algorithm. In particular, we numerically identify a bosonic $1/2$-Laughlin-like fractional Chern insulating state at the integer fillings. We show two lower topological flat bands jointly generate an effective $C=1$ Chern band with half-filling. Furthermore, we find a strictly particle-hole-like symmetry between the $ν$ and $3-ν$ filling in our model. These findings extend our understanding of quantum Hall states and offer a new route to realize the novel fractional states in the system with multi-bands and high-Chern numbers.

Quasicrystalline Chern Insulators

Chern insulator or quantum anomalous Hall state is a topological state with integer Hall conductivity but in absence of Landau level. It had been well established on various two-dimensional lattices with periodic structure. Here, we report similar Chern insulators can also be realized on the quasicrystal with $5$-fold rotational symmetry. Providing the staggered flux through plaquettes, we propose two types of quasicrystalline Chern insulators. Their topological characterizations are well identified by the robustness of edge states, non-zero real-space Chern number, and quantized conductance. We further find the failure of integer conductivity but with quantized Chern number at some special energies. Our study therefore provide a new opportunity to searching topological materials in aperiodic system.

Fractional Chern Insulators in Singular Geometries

The fractional quantum anomalous Hall (FQAH) states or fractional Chern insulator (FCI) states have been studied on two-dimensional (2D) flat lattices with different boundary conditions. Here, we propose the geometry-dependent FCI/FQAH states that interacting particles are bounded on 2D singular lattices with arbitrary $n$-fold rotational symmetry. Based on the generalized Pauli principle, we construct trial wave functions for the singular-lattice FCI/FQAH states with the aid of an effective projection approach, and compare them with the exact diagonalization results. High wave-function overlaps show that the singular-lattice FCI/FQAH states are certainly related to the geometric factor $β$. More interestingly, we observe some exotic degeneracy sequences of edge excitations in these singular-lattice FCI/FQAH states, and provide an explanation that two branches of edge excitations mix together.

Chern Insulators on Singular Geometries

Topological quantum states have been proposed and investigated on two-dimensional flat surfaces or lattices with different geometries like the plane, cylinder and torus. Here, we study quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) or Chern insulator (CI) states on two-dimensional singular surfaces (such as conical and helicoid-like surfaces). Such singular geometries can be constructed based on the disk geometry and a defined unit sector with $n$-fold rotational symmetry. The singular geometry induces novel and intriguing features of CI/QAH states, such as in-gap and in-band core states, charge fractionalization, and multiple branches of edge excitations.

Variational Monte Carlo study of spin dynamics in underdoped cuprates

The hour-glass-like dispersion of spin excitations is a common feature of underdoped cuprates. It was qualitatively explained by the random phase approximation based on various ordered states with some phenomenological parameters; however, its origin remains elusive. Here, we present a numerical study of spin dynamics in the $t$-$J$ model using the variational Monte Carlo method. This parameter-free method satisfies the no double-occupancy constraint of the model and thus provides a better evaluation on the spin dynamics with respect to various mean-field trial states. We conclude that the lower branch of the hour-glass dispersion is a collective mode and the upper branch is more likely the consequence of the stripe state than the other candidates.

Characterizations of topological superconductors: Chern numbers, edge states and Majorana zero modes

The topological properties in topological superconductors are usually characterized by the bulk Chern numbers, edge-state spectra, and Majorana zero modes. Whether they are equivalent or inequivalent is not well understood. Here, we investigate this issue with focus on a checkerboard-lattice model combining the Chern insulator and chiral $p$-wave superconductivity. Multiple topologically superconducting phases with Chern numbers up to $\mathcal{N}=4$ are produced. We explicitly demonstrate the mismatch between the Chern numbers, edge states and Majorana zero modes in this two-dimensional topological-superconductor model. The intrinsic reason is that some edge states in the superconducting phases inherited from the Chern-insulator phase are not protected by the particle-hole symmetry. We further check the mismatches in vortex states. Our results therefore clarify these different but complementary topological features and suggest that further considerations are required to characterize various topological superconductors.

Width-tuned magnetic order oscillation on zigzag edges of honeycomb nanoribbons

Quantum confinement and interference often generate exotic properties in nanostructures. One recent highlight is the experimental indication of a magnetic phase transition in zigzag-edged graphene nanoribbons at the critical ribbon width of about 7 nm [G. Z. Magda et al., Nature \textbf{514}, 608 (2014)]. Here we show theoretically that with further increase in the ribbon width, the magnetic correlation of the two edges can exhibit an intriguing oscillatory behavior between antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic, driven by acquiring the positive coherence between the two edges to lower the free energy. The oscillation effect is readily tunable in applied magnetic fields. These novel properties suggest new experimental manifestation of the edge magnetic orders in graphene nanoribbons, and enhance the hopes of graphene-like spintronic nanodevices functioning at room temperature.

Phase Competition and Anomalous Thermal Evolution in High-Temperature Superconductors

The interplay of competing orders is relevant to high-temperature superconductivity known to emerge upon suppression of a parent antiferromagnetic order typically via charge doping. How such interplay evolves at low temperature---in particular at what doping level the zero-temperature quantum critical point (QCP) is located---is still elusive because it is masked by the superconducting state. The QCP had long been believed to follow a smooth extrapolation of the characteristic temperature $T^*$ for the strange normal state well above the superconducting transition temperature. However, recently the $T^*$ within the superconducting dome was reported to unexpectedly exhibit back-bending likely in the cuprate Bi$_{2}$Sr$_{2}$CaCu$_{2}$O$_{8+δ}$. Here we show that the original and revised phase diagrams can be understood in terms of weak and moderate competitions, respectively, between superconductivity and a pseudogap state such as $d$-density-wave or spin-density-wave, based on both Ginzburg-Landau theory and the realistic $t$-$t^{\prime}$-$t^{\prime\prime}$-$J$-$V$ model for the cuprates. We further found that the calculated temperature and doping-level dependence of the quasiparticle spectral gap and Raman response qualitatively agrees with the experiments. In particular, the $T^*$ back-bending can provide a simple explanation of the observed anomalous two-step thermal evolution dominated by the superconducting gap and the pseudogap, respectively. Our results imply that the revised phase diagram is likely to take place in high-temperature superconductors.

Wave Functions for Fractional Chern Insulators on Disk Geometry

Recently, fractional Chern insulators (FCIs), also called fractional quantum anomalous Hall (FQAH) states, have been theoretically established in lattice systems with topological flat bands. These systems exhibit similar fractionalization phenomena as the conventional fractional quantum Hall (FQH) systems. Using the mapping relationship between the FQH states and the FCI/FQAH states, we construct the many-body wave functions of the fermionic FCI/FQAH states on the disk geometry with the aid of the generalized Pauli principle (GPP) and the Jack polynomials. Compared with the ground state by exact diagonalization method, the wave-function overlap is higher than $0.97$ even when the Hilbert space dimension is as large as $3\times10^6$. We also use the GPP and the Jack polynomials to construct edge excitations for the ferminoic FCI/FQAH states. The quasi-degeneracy sequences of fermionic FCI/FQAH systems reproduce the prediction of the chiral Luttinger liquid theory, complementing the exact diagonalization results with larger lattice sizes and more particles.

Resonance, Fermi surface topology, and Superconductivity in Cuprates

The resonance, a collective boson mode, was usually thought to be a possible glue of superconductivity. We argue that it is rather a natural product of the \emph{d}-wave pairing and the Fermi surface topology. A universal scaling $E_{res}/2Δ^{H}_{S}\sim 1.0$ ($Δ_{S}^{H}$ the magnitude of superconducting gap at hot spot) is proposed for cuprates, irrespective of the hole-/electron-doping, low-/high-energy resonance, monotonic/nonmonotonic \emph{d}-wave paring, and the parameters selected. We reveal that there may exist two resonance peaks in the electron-doped cuprates. The low- and high- energy resonance, originated from the contributions of the different intra-band component, is intimately associated with the Fermi surface topology. By analyzing the data of inelastic neutron scattering, we conclude the nonmonotonic \emph{d}-wave superconducting pairing symmetry in the electron-doped cuprates, which is still an open question

Edge Excitations in Fractional Chern Insulators

Recent theoretical works have demonstrated the realization of fractional quantum anomalous Hall states (also called fractional Chern insulators) in topological flat band lattice models without an external magnetic field. Such newly proposed lattice systems play a vital role to obtain a large class of fractional topological phases. Here we report the exact numerical studies of edge excitations for such systems in a disk geometry loaded with hard-core bosons, which will serve as a more viable experimental probe for such topologically ordered states. We find convincing numerical evidence of a series of edge excitations characterized by the chiral Luttinger liquid theory for the bosonic fractional Chern insulators in both the honeycomb disk Haldane model and the kagomé-lattice disk model. We further verify these current-carrying chiral edge states by inserting a central flux to test their compressibility.

Emergent topological and half semimetallic Dirac Fermions at oxide interfaces

It is highly desirable to combine recent advances in the topological quantum phases with technologically relevant materials. Chromium dioxide (CrO2) is a half-metallic material, widely used in high-end data storage applications. Using first principles calculations, we show via interfacial orbital design that a novel class of half semi-metallic Dirac electronic phase emerges at the interface CrO2 with TiO2 in both thin film and superlattice configurations, with four spin-polarized Dirac points in momentum-space (k-space) band structure. When the spin and orbital degrees of freedom are allowed to couple, the CrO2/TiO2 superlattice becomes a Chern insulator without external fields or additional doping. With topological gaps equivalent to 43 Kelvin and a Chern number 2, the ensuing quantization of Hall conductance to 2e^2/h will enable potential development of these highly industrialized oxides for applications in topologically high fidelity data storage and energy-efficient electronic and spintronic devices.

Fractional Quantum Hall Effect in Topological Flat Bands with Chern Number Two

Recent theoretical works have demonstrated various robust Abelian and non-Abelian fractional topological phases in lattice models with topological flat bands carrying Chern number C=1. Here we study hard-core bosons and interacting fermions in a three-band triangular-lattice model with the lowest topological flat band of Chern number C=2. We find convincing numerical evidence of bosonic fractional quantum Hall effect at the $ν=1/3$ filling characterized by three-fold quasi-degeneracy of ground states on a torus, a fractional Chern number for each ground state, a robust spectrum gap, and a gap in quasihole excitation spectrum. We also observe numerical evidence of a robust fermionic fractional quantum Hall effect for spinless fermions at the $ν=1/5$ filling with short-range interactions.

Transversal Propagation Behaviors of Helical Edge States In a QSH System

The transversal propagation of the edge states in a two-dimensional quantum spin Hall system are classified by decay characteristic quantity $λ$. Two different modes of the helical edge states exhibit distinct behaviors. The penetration depth is momentum dependent in normal edge states. The finite size gap decays monotonously with sample width, leading to the normal size effect. In contrast, the penetration depth maintains a uniform minimal value in the special edge states with much shorter length. The finite size gap decays non-monotonously with width, leading to the anomalous finite size effect. Real materials are compared in the phase diagram, which explicitly demonstrates their differences. We also propose an intuitive way to search the special edge states in two-dimensional quantum spin Hall system.

Non-Abelian Quantum Hall Effect in Topological Flat Bands

Inspired by recent theoretical discovery of robust fractional topological phases without a magnetic field, we search for the non-Abelian quantum Hall effect (NA-QHE) in lattice models with topological flat bands (TFBs). Through extensive numerical studies on the Haldane model with three-body hard-core bosons loaded into a TFB, we find convincing numerical evidence of a stable $ν=1$ bosonic NA-QHE, with the characteristic three-fold quasi-degeneracy of ground states on a torus, a quantized Chern number, and a robust spectrum gap. Moreover, the spectrum for two-quasihole states also shows a finite energy gap, with the number of states in the lower energy sector satisfying the same counting rule as the Moore-Read Pfaffian state.

Quantized multi-terminal resistances in ferromagnetic graphene p-n junctions

The quantum Hall and longitudinal resistances in multi-terminal ferromagnetic graphene p-n junctions under a perpendicular magnetic field are investigated. In the Hall measurements, the transverse contacts are assumed to be located at p-n interface to avoid the mixing of edge states at the interface and the resulting quantized resistances are then topologically protected. According to the charge carrier type, the resistances in four-terminal p-n junction can be naturally divided into nine different regimes. The symmetric Hall and longitudinal resistances are observed, with lots of new robust quantum plateaus revealed due to the competition between spin splitting and local potentials.
