Novel Multilepton Signatures from the Fermionic Portal to Vector Dark Matter

We perform a collider study of a novel multilepton signature arising from pair production of heavy vector-like leptons followed by cascade decays through a dark sector. In the muonic realisation of the Fermionic Portal to Vector Dark Matter, this process can lead to final states with four, six, eight, or ten visible muons, depending on the dark-sector spectrum and branching pattern. We identify the six-muon channel as the most powerful target: it remains sizeable over a broad region of parameter space, while being less rate-suppressed than the higher-multiplicity channels and much cleaner and more reconstructable than the four-muon final state. The signal arises from Drell--Yan pair production of vector-like muons, $pp\toμ'^{+}μ'^{-}$, followed by decays through the dark vector $V'$ and the dark scalar $H_D$. The six-muon final state receives contributions from symmetric decay topologies in which each $μ'$ yields three visible muons, and from the asymmetric topology in which one chain yields one muon and the other yields five. The six-lepton signature from vector-like-lepton pair production has not previously been explored at the LHC. We therefore develop a topology-based reconstruction which exploits the repeated dimuon, trimuon, and five-muon resonance structure of the signal. We simulate signal and Standard Model backgrounds at detector level, including a dedicated treatment of rare heavy-flavour muons. The resulting background after the six-muon selection and topology reconstruction is negligible. Existing Run-2 multilepton searches already constrain part of the low-mass parameter space, but they do not exploit the repeated resonance structure of the signal. A dedicated six-muon search can substantially extend the reach. At the HL-LHC, the proposed analysis can probe vector-like muon masses up to about $1.9$ TeV for favourable spectra.

Baryon-number-violating nucleon decays in sterile neutrino effective field theories

The search for baryon-number-violating (BNV) nucleon decay provides an intriguing probe of new physics beyond the Standard Model (SM). Future neutrino experiments will improve the sensitivity to BNV nucleon decays and can serve to search for dark particles. In this work, we study the sterile neutrino effective field theories (EFTs) with baryon number violation and the impact of light sterile neutrino on BNV nucleon decays. We revisit the dimension-6 and dimension-7 EFT operator bases with $|Δ(B-L)|=2$ or $|Δ(B-L)|=0$. They are then matched to the baryon chiral perturbation theory. We obtain the effective chiral Lagrangian at low energies and the BNV interactions between the sterile neutrino and baryons and mesons. The rates of nucleon decay to SM neutrinos or a sterile neutrino are calculated. We then show the constraints on the ultraviolet scale from nucleon decay search at Super-K. The correlation of two EFT operators and the dependence on the sterile neutrino mass are also investigated.

Aligned Yet Large Dipoles: a SMEFT Study

We study a non-universal flavor scenario at the level of the Standard Model Effective Field Theory, according to which the matrix of Wilson coefficients $c_{uW}$ of an up-type electroweak quark dipole operator is aligned with the up-type Yukawa coupling. Such an alignment usually follows from the assumption of Minimal Flavor Violation (MFV), away from which we step by allowing the entries of $c_{uW}$ to be sizable along the first quark generations. A particular example, which we refer to as ``inverse hierarchy MFV", features Wilson coefficients inversely proportional to quark masses, and arises from BSM models respecting MFV and containing heavy fields that replicate the mass hierarchy of SM quarks. We then analyze the phenomenology driven by $c_{uW}$ at colliders and at lower-energy flavor experiments. We show that precision measurements of the process $pp\rightarrow W h\rightarrow γγ\ellν$ at FCC-$hh$ could set an upper bound on $|c_{uW}|\lesssim\mathcal{O}(10^{-2})(Λ/{\rm TeV})^{2}$, with $Λ$ the cutoff of the effective field theory. This bound is an order of magnitude stronger than the existing LHC bounds. Moreover, we estimate that $W h\rightarrow b\bar b \ellν$ at HL-LHC could also give competitive bounds. In the low-energy regime, we consider bounds arising from rare kaon decays, which turn out to be loose, $|c_{uW}^{11}|<\mathcal{O}(1)(Λ/{\rm TeV})^{2}$. We finally demonstrate that our flavor and operator assumptions can be derived from a weakly-coupled UV model, which we choose to simultaneously illustrate the UV origin of inverse hierarchy MFV.

Baryon-number-violating nucleon decays in ALP effective field theories

The search for baryon-number-violating (BNV) nucleon decay is an intriguing probe of new physics beyond the SM in future neutrino experiments with enhanced sensitivity. The dark sector states such as an axion or axion-like particle (ALP) can induce nucleon decays with distinct signature and kinematics from the conventional nucleon decays. In this work, we study the ALP effective field theories (EFTs) with baryon number violation and the impact of light ALP on BNV nucleon decays. We revisit the dimension-8 BNV operators in the extended EFTs with an ALP field $a$ respecting shift symmetry. The low-energy EFT operators with $|Δ(B-L)|=2$ and $|Δ(B-L)|=0$ are matched to the baryon chiral perturbation theory. We obtain the effective chiral Lagrangian and the BNV interactions between ALP and baryons/mesons. The ALP interactions lead to two-body baryon decays $B\to \ell~({\rm or}~ν)~a$ and three-body nucleon decays $N\to M~\ell~({\rm or}~ν)~a$. We obtain the constraints on the UV scale from the invisible $Λ^0$ decay search at BESIII, the invisible neutron decay search at KamLAND and proton decay search at Super-K. We also show the projections of some other baryon/nucleon decays and present the distinct distributions of kinematic observable.

The flavor invariants of the $ν$SM

Sixty years after the experimental discovery of CP violation in the quark sector, the existence of a similar CP violation in the lepton sector is still to be established. Actually, the structure of such a violation depends crucially on the origin of the neutrino masses. In an attempt at categorizing the leptonic sources of CP violation, we studied the $ν$SM, the Standard Model extended with three generations of sterile neutrinos, that can interpolate continuously between the Dirac and Majorana scenarios of neutrino masses. In particular, we perform a classification of the Jarlskog-like flavor invariants entering CP-violating observables and we study their suppression with the heavy Majorana mass in the seesaw limit of the model. To simplify the construction of the invariants, we introduce a graph-based method. With the guidance of the Hilbert series and plethystic logarithm of the theory, we construct the \emph{generating} and \emph{primary} sets of invariants for the $ν$SM for the first time. Unlike in the Standard Model and some other theories, we find that the numbers of generating invariants and the syzygies among them cannot immediately be read off from the plethystic logarithm, but require a more careful examination. Our analysis reveals that the \emph{generating} set contains 459 invariants, out of which 208 are CP-even and 251 are CP-odd. In the seesaw limit of the $ν$SM, we show that all parameters of the UV theory can be captured in the effective theory with a certain suppression with the heavy Majorana mass, while these parameters can only appear in a \emph{flavor-invariant} way with a \emph{higher} mass suppression. Furthermore, we discuss how the necessary and sufficient conditions for CP violation can be captured by utilizing these invariants. Along the way, we present useful algorithms to enumerate and build the flavor invariants.

Searching for heavy neutral lepton and lepton number violation through VBS at high-energy muon colliders

High-energy muon collider can play as an emitter of electroweak gauge bosons and thus leads to substantial vector boson scattering (VBS) processes. In this work, we investigate the production of heavy neutral lepton (HNL) $N$ and lepton number violation (LNV) signature through VBS at high-energy muon colliders. VBS induces LNV processes $W^\pm Z/γ\to \ell^\pm N \to \ell^\pm \ell^\pm W^\mp\to \ell^\pm \ell^\pm q\bar{q}'$ with an on-shell HNL $N$ at $μ^+μ^-$ colliders. In analogy to neutrinoless double-beta decay with the HNL in t-channel, the LNV signature $W^+W^+\to \ell^+\ell^+$ can also happen via VBS at same-sign muon collider. They provide clean and robust LNV signatures to tell the nature of Majorana HNLs and thus have more advantageous benefits than direct $μμ$ annihilation. We analyze the potential of searching for Majorana HNL and obtain the exclusion limits on mixing $V_{\ell N}$. Based on this same-sign lepton signature, we also obtain the sensitivity of muon collider to the Weinberg operator.

Hilbert series for ALP EFTs

Axions and axion-like particles (ALPs) are ubiquitous in popular attempts to solve supercalifragilisticexpialidocious puzzles of Nature. A widespread and vivid experimental programme spanning a vast range of mass scales and decades of couplings strives to find evidence for these elusive but theoretically well-motivated particles. In the absence of clear guiding principle, effective field theories (EFTs) prove to be an efficient tool in this experimental quest. Hilbert series technologies are a privileged instrument of the EFT toolbox to enumerate and classify operators. In this work, we compute explicitly the Hilbert series capturing the interactions of a generic ALP to the Standard Model particles above and below the electroweak symmetry scale, which allow us to build bases of operators up to dimension 8. In particular, we revealed a remarkable structure of the Hilbert series that isolates the shift-symmetry breaking and preserving interactions. In addition, with the Hilbert series method, we enumerate the sources of CP violation in terms of CP-even, CP-odd and CP-violating operators. Furthermore, we provide an ancillary file of the Hilbert series up to dimension 15 to supplement our findings, which can be used for further analysis and exploration.

Systematic study of one-loop realizations of $d=7$ long-range $0νββ$ decay operators

We study the systematical one-loop decomposition of the dimension-7 long-range $0νββ$ decay operators. We find that there are 3 genuine one-loop topologies and 8 diagrams. The procedure to determine the SM quantum number assignments for both internal and external fields is presented. The Majorana neutrino mass in long-range $0νββ$ models is discussed. We also present a one-loop $0νββ$ decay model which produces Majorana neutrino mass at three-loop level. The phenomenological predictions for light neutrino mass and $0νββ$ decay half-life time including both mass mechanism and long-range contribution are studied.

Revealing the origin of neutrino masses through the Type II Seesaw mechanism at high-energy muon colliders

The future muon collider can play as an ideal machine to search for new physics at high energies. In this work, we study the search potential of the heavy Higgs triplet in the Type II Seesaw mechanism at muon colliders with high collision energy and high luminosity. The latest neutrino oscillation data are taken into account for realizing the leptonic decay modes of the charged Higgs bosons $(H^{\pm\pm},~H^{\pm})$ in the Type II Seesaw. We show the impact of neutrino mass and mixing parameters on the purely leptonic decays. The pair production of doubly charged Higgs $H^{++}H^{--}$ is through direct $μ^+μ^-$ annihilation and vector boson fusion (VBF) processes at muon collider. The associated production $H^{\pm\pm}H^{\mp}$ can only be induced by VBF processes. We simulate both the purely leptonic and bosonic signal channels of charged Higgs bosons in Type II Seesaw, together with the Standard Model backgrounds. We show the required luminosity for the discovery of the charged Higgses and the reachable limits on the leptonic decay branching fractions.

A minimal modular invariant neutrino model

We present a neutrino mass model based on modular symmetry with the fewest input parameters to date, which successfully accounts for the 12 lepton masses and mixing parameters through 6 real free parameters including the modulus. The neutrino masses are predicted to be normal ordering, the atmospheric angle $θ_{23}$ is quite close to maximal value and the Dirac CP phase $δ_{CP}$ is about $1.34π$. We also study the soft supersymmetry breaking terms due to the modulus $F$-term in this minimal model, which are constrained to be the non-holomorphic modular forms. The radiative lepton flavor violation process $μ\to eγ$ is discussed.

Probing heavy triplet leptons of the type-III seesaw mechanism at future muon colliders

We study the search potential of heavy triplet leptons in Type III Seesaw mechanism at future high-energy and high-luminosity muon colliders. The impact of up-to-date neutrino oscillation results is taken into account on neutrino parameters and the consequent decay patterns of heavy leptons in Type III Seesaw. The three heavy leptons in the Casas-Ibarra parametrization with diagonal unity matrix are distinguishable in their decay modes. We consider the pair production of charged triplet leptons $E^+ E^-$ through both $μ^+μ^-$ annihilation and vector boson fusion (VBF) processes. The leading-order framework of electroweak parton distribution functions are utilized to calculate the VBF cross sections. The charged triplet leptons can be probed for masses above $\sim 1$ TeV. The $E^+E^-\to ZZ\ell^+\ell^-$ channel can be further utilized to fully reconstruct the three triplet leptons and distinguish neutrino mass patterns. The pair production of heavy neutrinos $N$ and the associated production $E^\pm N$ are only induced by VBF processes and lead to lepton-number-violating (LNV) signature. We also study the search potential of LNV processes at future high-energy muon collider with $\sqrt{s}=30$ TeV.

Measurement of Higgs boson self-couplings through $2\rightarrow 3$ vector bosons scattering in future muon colliders

The $2\rightarrow 3$ scattering of longitudinal vector bosons (VBS) has been proven to be a complementary channel to measure the Higgs self-couplings in the Standard Model (SM) and the SM effective field theory (SMEFT) at colliders. We perform the first comprehensive study of all main $2\rightarrow 3$ VBS processes at high-energy muon colliders, especially including background analysis. The main contributing channels turn out to be the scattering of $W^+W^-\rightarrow W^+W^-h$, $ZZh$ and $hhh$. We obtain the constraints on $c_6$ and $c_{Φ_1}$ which are the Wilson coefficients of the dimension-6 operators relevant for Higgs self-couplings in the SMEFT. With the center-of-mass energies of 10 TeV and 30 TeV, we find the expected sensitivity to the coefficients $c_6/Λ^2$ and $c_{Φ_1}/Λ^2$ can reach the level of 0.01 TeV$^{-2}$. The tightest constraints come from the $hhh$ channel, while the constraints from $WWh$ are also comparable. Our results crucially depend on selecting the longitudinal polarizations for the final $W$ and $Z$ bosons. We then study how the sensitivities change by varying the efficiency of tagging longitudinal polarizations, and find that the significance remains consistently high.

Decomposition of $d=9$ short-range $0νββ$ decay operators at one-loop level

We perform a systematical study of the dimension-9 short-range $0νββ$ decay operators at one-loop level. There are only six genuine topologies which generate eight diagrams, and the recipe to identify the possible one-loop realizations of the $0νββ$ decay operators is sketched. Certain hypercharge assignments are excluded by the absence of tree-level diagrams in a genuine one-loop model. The mediators of each decomposition can generate Majorana neutrino masses which are discussed up to two-loop level. We present an example of $0νββ$ decay model in which the neutrino masses are generated at two-loop level, and the short-range contribution can be comparable with the mass mechanism in some region of parameter space.

Modular $S_4\times SU(5)$ GUT

Modular symmetry offers the possibility to provide an origin of discrete flavour symmetry and to break it along particular symmetry preserving directions without introducing flavons or driving fields. It is also possible to use a weighton field to account for charged fermion mass hierarchies rather than a Froggatt-Nielsen mechanism. Such an approach can be applied to flavoured Grand Unified Theories (GUTs) which can be greatly simplified using modular forms. As an example, we consider a modular version of a previously proposed $S_4\times SU(5)$ GUT, with Gatto-Sartori-Tonin and Georgi-Jarlskog relations, in which all flavons and driving fields are removed, with their effect replaced by modular forms with moduli assumed to be at various fixed points, rendering the theory much simpler. In the neutrino sector there are two right-handed neutrinos constituting a Littlest Seesaw model satisfying Constrained Sequential Dominance (CSD) where the two columns of the Dirac neutrino mass matrix are proportional to $(0,1, -1)$ and $(1, n, 2-n)$ respectively, and $n=1+\sqrt{6}\approx 3.45$ is prescribed by the modular symmetry, with predictions subject to charged lepton mixing corrections. We perform a numerical analysis, showing quark and lepton mass and mixing correlations around the best fit points.

Charged lepton flavor violation in light of the muon magnetic moment anomaly and colliders

Any observation of charged lepton flavor violation (CLFV) implies the existence of new physics beyond the SM in charged lepton sector. CLFV interactions may also contribute to the muon magnetic moment and explain the discrepancy between the SM prediction and the recent muon $g-2$ precision measurement at Fermilab. We consider the most general SM gauge invariant Lagrangian of $ΔL=0$ bileptons with CLFV couplings and investigate the interplay of low-energy precision experiments and colliders in light of the muon magnetic moment anomaly. We go beyond previous work by demonstrating the sensitivity of the LHC, the MACE experiment, a proposed muonium-antimuonium conversion experiment, and a muon collider. Currently-available LHC data is already able to probe unexplored parameter space via the CLFV process $pp\toγ^*/Z^*\to \ell_1^\pm \ell_1^\pm \ell_2^\mp \ell_2^\mp$.

Searching for heavy neutrino in terms of tau lepton at future hadron collider

The tau lepton plays important role in the correlation between the low-energy neutrino oscillation data and the lepton flavor structure in heavy neutrino decay. We investigate the lepton flavor signatures with tau lepton at hadron collider through lepton number violating (LNV) processes. In the Type I Seesaw with U$(1)_{\rm B-L}$ extension, we study the pair production of heavy neutrinos via a $Z'$ resonance. We present a detailed assessment of the search sensitivity to the channels with tau lepton in the subsequent decay of heavy neutrinos. For the benchmark model with $Z'$ only coupled to the third generation fermions, we find that the future circular collider (FCC-hh) can discover the LNV signal with tau lepton for $M_{Z'}$ up to 2.2 (3) TeV with the gauge coupling $g'=0.6$ and the integrated luminosity of 3 (30) ab$^{-1}$. The test on the flavor combinations of SM charged leptons would reveal the specific nature of different heavy neutrinos.

Fermion Masses and Mixing from Double Cover and Metaplectic Cover of $A_5$ Modular Group

We perform a comprehensive study of the homogeneous finite modular group $A'_5$ which is the double covering of $A_5$. The integral weight and level 5 modular forms have been constructed up to weight 6 and they are decomposed into the irreducible representations of $A'_5$. Then we perform a systematical analysis of the $A'_5$ modular models for lepton masses and mixing. The phenomenologically viable models with minimal number of free parameters and the results of fit are presented. We find out 15 models with 9 real free parameters which can accommodate the experimental data of lepton sector. After including generalized CP symmetry, 9 viable models with 7 free parameters are found out. We apply $A'_5$ modular symmetry to the quark sector, and a quark-lepton unification model is given. The framework of modular invariance is extended to include the rational weight modular forms of level 5. The ring of modular forms at level 5 can be generated by two algebraically independent weight $1/5$ modular forms denoted by $F_1(τ)$ and $F_2(τ)$. We give the expressions of the rational weight modular forms of level 5 up to weight $3$ and arrange them into the irreducible multiplets of finite metaplectic group $\widetildeΓ_5\cong A'_5\times Z_5$. A neutrino mass model with $\widetildeΓ_5$ modular symmetry is presented, and the phenomenological predictions of the model are analyzed numerically.

Modular Invariant Quark and Lepton Models in Double Covering of $S_4$ Modular Group

We perform a comprehensive analysis of the homogeneous finite modular group $Γ'_4\equiv S'_4$ which is the double covering of $S_4$ group. The weight 1 modular forms of level 4 are constructed in terms of Dedekind eta function, and they transform as a triplet $\mathbf{\hat{3}'}$ of $S'_4$. The integral weight modular forms until weight 6 are built from the tensor products of weight 1 modular forms. We perform a systematical classification of $S'_4$ modular models for lepton masses and mixing with/without generalized CP, where the left-handed leptons are assigned to triplet of $S'_4$ and right-handed charged leptons transform as singlets under $S'_4$, and we consider both scenarios where the neutrino masses arise from Weinberg operator or type I seesaw mechanism. The phenomenological implications of the minimal models for lepton masses, mixing angles, CP violation phases and neutrinoless double decay are discussed. The $S'_4$ modular symmetry is extended to quark sector, we present several predictive models which use nine or ten free parameters including real and imaginary parts of $τ$ to describe quark masses and Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa mixing matrix. We give a quark-lepton unified model which can explain the flavor structure of quarks and leptons simultaneously for a common value of $τ$.
