Study of a Compact Device for Water Attenuation Length Measurements

This study presents the development and validation of a compact device for measuring the water attenuation length (WAL), utilizing photomultiplier tubes (PMTs), optical fibers, and light-emitting diodes (LEDs). An 8 m water tank and the device was constructed and validated in the laboratory. The device is capable of measuring WAL values up to 50 m. The stray light was blocked mainly by a custom-designed shutter. Toy Monte Carlo simulations were employed to evaluate the measurement uncertainty, which was found to be within reasonable limits. These simulations further indicate that the uncertainty can be reduced and more accurately predicted for a larger-scale device with a length of 30 m. Real-time monitoring was achieved by integrating the device into a water purification circulation system, providing a practical, scalable solution for WAL measurement in future large-scale water Cherenkov detectors.

A novel design for 100 meter-scale water attenuation length measurement and monitoring

Water Cherenov detector is a vital part in most of neutrino or cosmic ray research. As detectors grow in size, the water attenuation length (WAL) becomes increasingly essential for detector performance. It is essential to measure or monitor the WAL. While many experiments have measured WAL in the lab or detector, only the Super-Kamiokande experiment has achieved values exceeding 50 meters in the detector with a moving light source. However, it is impractical for many experiments to place a moving light source inside the detector, necessitating an alternative method for investigating long WAL. A novel system has been proposed to address the challenge of investigating long WAL. This system focuses on ample water Cherenkov detectors and features a fixed light source and photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) at varying distances, eliminating the need for moving parts. The static setup demands high precision for accurate measurement of long WAL. Each component, including LED, diffuse ball, PMTs, and fibers, is introduced to explain uncertainty control. Based on lab tests, the system's uncertainty has been controlled within 5\%. Additionally, camera technology is also used during the evaluation of the system uncertainty, which has the potential to replace PMTs in the future for this measurement. Monte Carlo simulations have shown that the system can achieve a 5\% measurement uncertainty at WAL of 80 meters and 8\% at WAL of 100 meters. This system can be used in experiments with large Cherenkov detectors such as JUNO water veto and Hyper-K.

Study on the radon adsorption capability of low-background activated carbon

Radon is a significant background source in rare event detection experiments. Activated Carbon (AC) adsorption is widely used for effective radon removal. The selection of AC considers its adsorption capacity and radioactive background. In this study, using self-developed devices, we screened and identified a new kind of low-background AC from Qingdao Inaf Technology Company that has very high Radon adsorption capacity. By adjusting the average pore size to 2.3 nm, this AC demonstrates a radon adsorption capacity of 2.6 or 4.7 times higher than Saratech or Carboact activated carbon under the same conditions.

Dark Count of 20-inch PMTs Generated by Natural Radioactivity

The primary objective of the JUNO experiment is to determine the ordering of neutrino masses using a 20-kton liquid-scintillator detector. The 20-inch photomultiplier tube (PMT) plays a crucial role in achieving excellent energy resolution of at least 3% at 1 MeV. Understanding the characteristics and features of the PMT is vital for comprehending the detector's performance, particularly regarding the occurrence of large pulses in PMT dark counts. This research paper aims to further investigate the origin of these large pulses in the 20-inch PMT dark count rate through measurements and simulations. The findings confirm that the main sources of the large pulses are natural radioactivity and muons striking the PMT glass. By analyzing the PMT dark count rate spectrum, it becomes possible to roughly estimate the radioactivity levels in the surrounding environment.

Imaging of muon track in CsI(Tl) crystal with single photon sensitive camera

As a novel approach on visual photon imaging by a single photon sensitive camera and PMTs, this work is trying to measure and identify muon tracks from the 2-D images of CsI(Tl) crystal (scintillator detectors). It is possible that muon tracks can be seen directly with a good signal-to-noise ratio neither with further amplification nor external light, which provides an evolution method for particle measurement in the photon-starved regime of scintillation detectors. The setup of the crystal and camera testing system and the identification algorithm of muon track will be discussed in detail including the system calibration, identification model, signal-to-noise ratio, muon track confirmation, and an expectation on further improvements and applications.

Study on the linearity of 20" dynode and MCP PMTs

The linearity of charge response is an important feature of photomultiplier tubes (PMT) for physics measurements, especially the newly developed 20" MCP-PMT. In this paper, in addition to the traditional method of double light sources, we applied another relative method of 20" PMT to 3" PMT to measure the linearity of the 20" dynode and MCP PMTs in pulse mode with a waveform digitizer. The measurements show a good linear response of 20" PMTs to 1,000 photoelectrons (p.e.). The correlations of the amplitude, rise-time, fall-time, FWHM, baseline recovery, overshoot, and late-pulse to the output charge of the 20" PMTs derived from the waveform analysis, where the MCP-PMT shows very different features compared to the dynode-PMT in particular.

Performance of compact plastic scintillator strips with WLS-fiber and PMT/SiPM readout

This work presents the design and performance study of compact strips of plastic scintillator with WLS-fiber readout in a dimension of 0.1 * 0.02 * 2 m3, which evaluates as a candidate for cosmic-ray muon detector for JUNO-TAO. The strips coupling with 3-inch PMTs are measured and compared between the single-end and double-end readout options first, and the strip of double-end option coupling with SiPM is further measured and compared with the results of that with the PMTs. The performance of the strips determined by a detailed survey along their length with cosmic-ray muon after a detailed characterization of the used 3-inch PMTs and SiPMs.The proposed compact strip of plastic scintillator with WLS-fiber coupling with SiPM provides a good choice for cosmic-ray muon veto detector for limited detector dimension in particular.

Study of 20-inch PMTs dark count generated large pulses

The main goal of the JUNO experiment is to determine the neutrino mass ordering with a 20\,kt liquid-scintillator detector. The 20-inch PMT is crucial as one of JUNO key instruments to realize an excellent energy resolution of at least 3\,\% at 1\,MeV. The knowledge on PMT's characterisation and feature is critical for detector performance understanding. Large pulses from PMT dark count such as from flasher or others are one of the serious concerns for detector noise control. Focusing on the large pulses from 20-inch PMT dark count, this paper is trying to investigate the causes by measurements with a muon tagging system. It is found that the large pules of 20-inch PMT dark count is contributed mainly from muons hitting the PMT glass. A simulation is also realized and achieved a consistent understanding.

Imaging of CsI(Tl) crystal event and double-slit Young's interference by a single photon sensitive camera

We will discuss an imaging measurement with a single photon sensitive and low noise camera aiming to a new paradigm in the optical readout of scintillation detectors. The features of the single photon sensitive camera will be characterized and demonstrated with a measurement on double-slit Young's interference in single photon mode. An imaging test on CsI(Tl) crystal and alpha source will be performed further for preliminary measurements on the noise level and sensitivity of the system with a 1/2", f/1.4 lens, which reaches an sensitivity on light intensity around 1/10 of the 3-inch PMT and shows a potential to realize an imaging of single alpha event. An application proposal to scintillation detectors will be further discussed, where it is usually assumed that the imaging is not possible in such a photon-starved and large-emittance regime.

Radiogenic neutron background in reactor neutrino experiments

We report a novel correlated background in the antineutrino detection using the inverse beta decay reaction. Spontaneous fissions and $(\alpha,n)$ reactions in peripheral materials of the antineutrino detector, such as borosilicate glass of photomultipliers, produce fast neutrons and prompt gamma rays. If the shielding from the material to the detector target were not thick enough, neutrons and gammas could enter the target volume and mimic antineutrino signals. This paper revisits the yields and energy spectra of neutrons produced in B$(\alpha,n)$N and F$(\alpha,n)$Na reactions. A Geant4 based simulation has been carried out using a simplified detector geometry for the present generation reactor neutrino experiments. The background rates in these experiments are estimated. If this background was not taken into account, the value of the neutrino mixing angle $\sin^22\theta_{13}$ would be underestimated. We recommend that Daya Bay, RENO, Double Chooz, and JUNO, carefully examine the masses and radiopurity levels of detector materials that are close to the target and rich in boron and fluorine.

Measurement of the relative Quantum Efficiency of Hamamatsu model R5912-20MOD photomultiplier tubes at liquid argon temperature

The model R5912-20MOD photomultiplier tube(PMT) is made for cryogenic application by Hamamatsu. In this paper, we report on the measurement of relative quantum efficiency (QE) of this model PMT at liquid argon(LAr) temperature. Furthermore, a specially designed setup and relevant test method are introduced. The relative QE is measured in visible wavelengths with the PMT emerged in high purity nitrogen atmosphere. The results show that the change of QE at LAr temperature is within about 5% compared with room temperature around 420 nm. However, the QE increases about 10% in the shorter wavelength range and decreases significantly after 550 nm.

Developing the radium measurement system for the water Cherenkov detector of the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory

The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory is proposed to determine neutrino mass hierarchy using a 20~ktonne liquid scintillator detector. Strict radio-purity requirements have been put forward for all the components of the detector. According to the MC simulation results, the radon dissolved in the water Cherenkov detector should be below 200~mBq/m$^3$. Radium, the progenitor of radon, should also be taken seriously into account. In order to measure the radium concentration in water, a radium measurement system, which consists of a radium extraction system, a radon emanation chamber and a radon concentration measurement system, has been developed. In this paper, the updated radon concentration in gas measurement system with a one-day-measurement sensitivity of $\sim$5~mBq/m$^3$, the detail of the development of the radium concentration in water measurement system with a sensitivity of $\sim$23~mBq/m$^3$ as well as the measurement results of Daya Bay water samples will be presented.

A parametrization of the cosmic-ray muon flux at sea-level

Based on the standard Gaisser's formula, a modified parametrization for the sea-level cosmic-ray muon flux is introduced. The modification is verified against experimental results. The average vertical cosmic-ray muon intensity as a function of depth of standard rock is simulated using the modified formula as input to the MUSIC code. The calculated muon intensities is consistent with the experimental measurements.

Waterproofed Photomultiplier Tube Assemblies for the Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment

In the Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment 960 20-cm-diameter waterproof photomultiplier tubes are used to instrument three water pools as Cherenkov detectors for detecting cosmic-ray muons. Of these 960 photomultiplier tubes, 341 are recycled from the MACRO experiment. A systematic program was undertaken to refurbish them as waterproof assemblies. In the context of passing the water leakage check, a success rate better than 97% was achieved. Details of the design, fabrication, testing, operation, and performance of these waterproofed photomultiplier-tube assemblies are presented.

Advantages of Multiple Detectors for the Neutrino Mass Hierarchy Determination at Reactor Experiments

We study the advantages of a second identical detector at a medium baseline reactor neutrino experiment. A major obstruction to the determination of the neutrino mass hierarchy is the detector's unknown nonlinear energy response, which even under optimistic assumptions reduces the confidence in a hierarchy determination by about 1 sigma at a single detector experiment. Various energy response models are considered at one and two detector experiments with the same total target mass. A second detector at a sufficiently different baseline eliminates this 1 sigma reduction. Considering the unknown energy response, we find the confidence in a hierarchy determination at various candidate detector locations for JUNO and RENO 50. The best site for JUNO's near detector is under ZiLuoShan, 17 km and 66 km from the Yangjiang and Taishan reactor complexes respectively. We briefly describe other advantages, including a more precise determination of theta12 and the possibility of a DAEdALUS-inspired program to measure the CP-violating phase delta using a single pion source about 10 km from one detector and 20 km from the other. Two identical detectors provide a better energy resolution than a single (larger) detector, further increasing the confidence in a hierarchy determination.
