10 GHz Robust polarization modulation towards high-speed satellite-based quantum communication

In practical satellite-based quantum key distribution (QKD) systems, the preparation and transmission of polarization-encoding photons suffer from complex environmental effects and high channel-loss. Consequently, the hinge to enhancing the secure key rate (SKR) lies in achieving robust, low-error and high-speed polarization modulation. Although the schemes that realize self-compensation exhibit remarkable robustness. Their modulation speed is constrained to approximately 2 GHz to avoid the interaction between the electrical signal and the reverse optical pulses. Here we utilize the non-reciprocity of the lithium niobate modulators and eliminate the modulation on the reverse optical pulses. As this characteristic is widely available in the radio-frequency band, the modulation speed is no longer limited by the self-compensating optics and can be further increased. The measured average intrinsic QBER of the different polarization states at 10 GHz system repetition frequency is as low as 0.53% over 10 min without any compensation. And the experiment simulation shows that the proposed scheme extends the transmission distance to more than 350 km. Our work can be be efficient performed to the high-speed and high-loss satellite-based quantum communication scenario.

High-Performance Flexible All-Perovskite Tandem Solar Cells with Reduced VOC-Deficit in Wide-Bandgap Subcell

Among various types of perovskite-based tandem solar cells (TSCs), all-perovskite TSCs are of particular attractiveness for building- and vehicle-integrated photovoltaics, or space energy areas as they can be fabricated on flexible and lightweight substrates with a very high power-to-weight ratio. However, the efficiency of flexible all-perovskite tandems is lagging far behind their rigid counterparts primarily due to the challenges in developing efficient wide-bandgap (WBG) perovskite solar cells on the flexible substrates as well as the low open-circuit voltage (VOC) in the WBG perovskite subcell. Here, we report that the use of self-assembled monolayers as hole-selective contact effectively suppresses the interfacial recombination and allows the subsequent uniform growth of a 1.77 eV WBG perovskite with superior optoelectronic quality. In addition, we employ a post-deposition treatment with 2-thiopheneethylammonium chloride to further suppress the bulk and interfacial recombination, boosting the VOC of the WBG top cell to 1.29 V. Based on this, we present the first proof-of-concept four-terminal all-perovskite flexible TSC with a PCE of 22.6%. When integrating into two-terminal flexible tandems, we achieved 23.8% flexible all-perovskite TSCs with a superior VOC of 2.1 V, which is on par with the VOC reported on the 28% all-perovskite tandems grown on the rigid substrate.

Photonic Integrated Phase Decoder Scheme for High-Speed, Efficient and Stable Quantum Key Distribution System

Quantum key distribution (QKD) is gradually moving towards network applications. It is important to improve the performance of QKD systems such as photonic integration for compact systems, the stability resistant to environmental disturbances, high key rate, and high efficiency in QKD applications. In the letter, we propose a general quantum decoding model, namely orthogonal-polarizations-exchange reflector Michelson interferometer model, to solve quantum channel disturbance caused by environment. Based on the model, we give a quantum phase decoder scheme, i.e. a Sagnac configuration based orthogonal-polarizations-exchange reflector Michelson interferometer (SRMI). Besides the stability immune to quantum channel disturbance, the SRMI decoder can be fabricated with photonic integrated circuits, and suitable to gigahertz phase encoding QKD systems, and can increase the system efficiency because of the low insertion loss of the decoder.

Alternative Anti-Quantum-Channel Disturbance Decoder for Quantum Key Distribution

In the letter, we propose an anti-quantum-channel disturbance decoder for quantum key distribution (QKD). The decoder is based on a quarter-wave plate reflector-Michelson (Q-M) interferometer, with which the QKD system can be free of polarization disturbance caused by quantum channel and optical devices in the system. The theoretical analysis indicates that the Q-M interferometer is immune to polarization-induced signal fading and its corresponding operator is Pauli Matrix {\sigma}2, which naturally satisfies the anti-disturbance condition. A Q-M interferometer based time-bin phase encoding QKD setup is demonstrated and the experimental results show that the QKD setup works stably with a low quantum bit error rate and an average safe key rate about 7.34 kbps over 50.4 km standard optical fiber for two hours in the lab.
