UWAT-GAN: Fundus Fluorescein Angiography Synthesis via Ultra-wide-angle Transformation Multi-scale GAN

Fundus photography is an essential examination for clinical and differential diagnosis of fundus diseases. Recently, Ultra-Wide-angle Fundus (UWF) techniques, UWF Fluorescein Angiography (UWF-FA) and UWF Scanning Laser Ophthalmoscopy (UWF-SLO) have been gradually put into use. However, Fluorescein Angiography (FA) and UWF-FA require injecting sodium fluorescein which may have detrimental influences. To avoid negative impacts, cross-modality medical image generation algorithms have been proposed. Nevertheless, current methods in fundus imaging could not produce high-resolution images and are unable to capture tiny vascular lesion areas. This paper proposes a novel conditional generative adversarial network (UWAT-GAN) to synthesize UWF-FA from UWF-SLO. Using multi-scale generators and a fusion module patch to better extract global and local information, our model can generate high-resolution images. Moreover, an attention transmit module is proposed to help the decoder learn effectively. Besides, a supervised approach is used to train the network using multiple new weighted losses on different scales of data. Experiments on an in-house UWF image dataset demonstrate the superiority of the UWAT-GAN over the state-of-the-art methods. The source code is available at: https://github.com/Tinysqua/UWAT-GAN.

Hepatocellular Carcinoma Segmentation from Digital Subtraction Angiography Videos using Learnable Temporal Difference

Automatic segmentation of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in Digital Subtraction Angiography (DSA) videos can assist radiologists in efficient diagnosis of HCC and accurate evaluation of tumors in clinical practice. Few studies have investigated HCC segmentation from DSA videos. It shows great challenging due to motion artifacts in filming, ambiguous boundaries of tumor regions and high similarity in imaging to other anatomical tissues. In this paper, we raise the problem of HCC segmentation in DSA videos, and build our own DSA dataset. We also propose a novel segmentation network called DSA-LTDNet, including a segmentation sub-network, a temporal difference learning (TDL) module and a liver region segmentation (LRS) sub-network for providing additional guidance. DSA-LTDNet is preferable for learning the latent motion information from DSA videos proactively and boosting segmentation performance. All of experiments are conducted on our self-collected dataset. Experimental results show that DSA-LTDNet increases the DICE score by nearly 4% compared to the U-Net baseline.

Learning Mutually Local-global U-nets For High-resolution Retinal Lesion Segmentation in Fundus Images

Diabetic retinopathy is the most important complication of diabetes. Early diagnosis of retinal lesions helps to avoid visual loss or blindness. Due to high-resolution and small-size lesion regions, applying existing methods, such as U-Nets, to perform segmentation on fundus photography is very challenging. Although downsampling the input images could simplify the problem, it loses detailed information. Conducting patch-level analysis helps reaching fine-scale segmentation yet usually leads to misunderstanding as the lack of context information. In this paper, we propose an efficient network that combines them together, not only being aware of local details but also taking fully use of the context perceptions. This is implemented by integrating the decoder parts of a global-level U-net and a patch-level one. The two streams are jointly optimized, ensuring that they are enhanced mutually. Experimental results demonstrate our new framework significantly outperforms existing patch-based and global-based methods, especially when the lesion regions are scattered and small-scaled.
