Möbius and Laguerre geometry of Dupin Hypersurfaces

In this paper we show that a Dupin hypersurface with constant Möbius curvatures is Möbius equivalent to either an isoparametric hypersurface in the sphere or a cone over an isoparametric hypersurface in a sphere. We also show that a Dupin hypersurface with constant Laguerre curvatures is Laguerre equivalent to a flat Laguerre isoparametric hypersurface. These results solve the major issues related to the conjectures of Cecil et al on the classification of Dupin hypersurfaces.

Classification of Willmore 2-spheres in the 5-dimensional sphere

The classification of Willmore 2-spheres in the $n$-dimensional sphere $S^n$ is a long-standing problem, solved only when $n=3,4$ by Bryant, Ejiri, Musso and Montiel independently. In this paper we give a classification when $n=5$. There are three types of such surfaces up to Möbius transformations: (1) super-conformal surfaces in $S^4$; (2) minimal surfaces in $R^5$; (3) adjoint transforms of super-conformal minimal surfaces in $R^5$. In particular, Willmore surfaces in the third class are not S-Willmore (i.e., without a dual Willmore surface). To show the existence of Willmore 2-spheres in $S^5$ of type (3), we describe all adjoint transforms of a super-conformal minimal surfaces in $R^n$ and provide some explicit criterions on the immersion property. As an application, we obtain new immersed Willmore 2-spheres in $S^5$ and $S^6$, which are not S-Willmore.

Global geometry and topology of spacelike stationary surfaces in the 4-dimensional Lorentz space

For spacelike stationary (i.e. zero mean curvature) surfaces in 4-dimensional Lorentz space one can naturally introduce two Gauss maps and Weierstrass representation. In this paper we investigate their global geometry systematically. The total Gaussian curvature is related with the surface topology as well as the indices of the so-called good singular ends by a generalized Jorge-Meeks formula. On the other hand, as shown by a family of counter-examples to Osserman's theorem, finite total curvature no longer implies that Gauss maps extend to the ends. Interesting examples include the generalization of the classical catenoids, helicoids, the Enneper surface, and Jorge-Meeks' k-noids. Any of them could be embedded in the 4-dimensional Lorentz space, showing a sharp contrast with the case of 3-dimensional Euclidean space.

Wintgen ideal submanifolds of codimension two, complex curves, and Moebius geometry

Wintgen ideal submanifolds in space forms are those ones attaining equality pointwise in the so-called DDVV inequality which relates the scalar curvature, the mean curvature and the scalar normal curvature. Using the framework of Moebius geometry, we show that in the codimension two case, the mean curvature sphere of the Wintgen ideal submanifold corresponds to an 1-isotropic holomorphic curve in a complex quadric Q. Conversely, any 1-isotropic complex curve in Q describes a 2-parameter family of m-dimensional spheres whose envelope is always a m-dimensional Wintgen ideal submanifold at the regular points. The relationship with Dajczer and Tojeiro's work on the same topic as well as the description in terms of minimal surfaces in the Euclidean space is also discussed.

Classification of Moebius homogeneous Wintgen ideal submanifolds

A submanifold in a real space form attaining equality in the DDVV inequality at every point is called a Wintgen ideal submanifold. They are invariant objects under the Moebius transformations. In this paper, we classify those Wintgen ideal submanifolds of dimension m>3 which are Moebius homogeneous. There are three classes of non-trivial examples, each related with a famous class of homogeneous minimal surfaces in $S^n$ or $CP^n$: the cones over the Veronese surfaces $S^2$ in $S^n$, the cones over homogeneous flat minimal surfaces in $S^n$, and the Hopf bundle over the Veronese embeddings of $CP^1$ in $CP^n$.

Moebius geometry of three dimensional Wintgen ideal submanifolds in S^5

Wintgen ideal submanifolds in space forms are those ones attaining equality at every point in the so-called DDVV inequality which relates the scalar curvature, the mean curvature and the normal scalar curvature. This property is conformal invariant; hence we study them in the framework of Moebius geometry, and restrict to three dimensional Wintgen ideal submanifolds in S^5. In particular we give Moebius characterizations for minimal ones among them, which are also known as (3-dimensional) austere submanifolds (in 5-dimensional space forms).

Deformation of Hypersurfaces Preserving the Moebius Metric and a Reduction Theorem

A hypersurface without umbilics in the n+1 dimensional Euclidean space is known to be determined by the Moebius metric and the Moebius second fundamental form up to a Moebius transformation when n>2. In this paper we consider Moebius rigidity for hypersurfaces and deformations of a hypersurface preserving the Moebius metric in the high dimensional case n>3. When the highest multiplicity of principal curvatures is less than n-2, the hypersurface is Moebius rigid. Deformable hypersurfaces and the possible deformations are also classified completely. In addition, we establish a Reduction Theorem characterizing the classical construction of cylinders, cones, and rotational hypersurfaces, which helps to find all the non-trivial deformable examples in our classification with wider application in the future.

Models of on-line social networks

We present a deterministic model for on-line social networks (OSNs) based on transitivity and local knowledge in social interactions. In the Iterated Local Transitivity (ILT) model, at each time-step and for every existing node $x$, a new node appears which joins to the closed neighbour set of $x.$ The ILT model provably satisfies a number of both local and global properties that were observed in OSNs and other real-world complex networks, such as a densification power law, decreasing average distance, and higher clustering than in random graphs with the same average degree. Experimental studies of social networks demonstrate poor expansion properties as a consequence of the existence of communities with low number of inter-community edges. Bounds on the spectral gap for both the adjacency and normalized Laplacian matrices are proved for graphs arising from the ILT model, indicating such bad expansion properties. The cop and domination number are shown to remain the same as the graph from the initial time-step $G_0$, and the automorphism group of $G_0$ is a subgroup of the automorphism group of graphs generated at all later time-steps. A randomized version of the ILT model is presented, which exhibits a tuneable densification power law exponent, and maintains several properties of the deterministic model.

Wintgen ideal submanifolds with a low-dimensional integrable distribution (I)

A submanifold in space forms satisfies the well-known DDVV inequality due to De Smet, Dillen, Verstraelen and Vrancken. The submanifold attaining equality in the DDVV inequality at every point is called Wintgen ideal submanifold. As conformal invariant objects, Wintgen ideal submanifolds are studied in this paper using the framework of Möbius geometry. We classify Wintgen ideal submanfiolds of dimension $m>2$ and arbitrary codimension when a canonically defined 2-dimensional distribution $\mathbb{D}$ is integrable. Such examples come from cones, cylinders, or rotational submanifolds over super-minimal surfaces in spheres, Euclidean spaces, or hyperbolic spaces, respectively.

Willmore Surfaces of Constant Moebius Curvature

We study Willmore surfaces of constant Moebius curvature $K$ in $S^4$. It is proved that such a surface in $S^3$ must be part of a minimal surface in $R^3$ or the Clifford torus. Another result in this paper is that an isotropic surface (hence also Willmore) in $S^4$ of constant $K$ could only be part of a complex curve in $C^2\cong R^4$ or the Veronese 2-sphere in $S^4$. It is conjectured that they are the only examples possible. The main ingredients of the proofs are over-determined systems and isoparametric functions.

Laguerre Geometry of Hypersurfaces in $\R^n$

Laguerre geometry of surfaces in $\R^3$ is given in the book of Blaschke [1], and have been studied by E.Musso and L.Nicolodi [5], [6], [7], B. Palmer [8] and other authors. In this paper we study Laguerre differential geometry of hypersurfaces in $\R^n$. For any umbilical free hypersurface $x: M\to\R^n$ with non-zero principal curvatures we define a Laguerre invariant metric $g$ on $M$ and a Laguerre invariant self-adjoint operator ${\mathbb S}: TM\to TM$, and show that $\{g,{\mathbb S}\}$ is a complete Laguerre invariant system for hypersurfaces in $\R^n$ with $n\ge 4$. We calculate the Euler-Lagrange equation for the Laguerre volume functional of Laguerre metric by using Laguerre invariants. Using the Euclidean space $\R^n$, the Lorentzian space $\R^n_1$ and the degenerate space $\R^n_0$ we define three Laguerre space forms $U\R^n$, $U\R^n_1$ and $U\R^n_0$ and define the Laguerre embedding $ U\R^n_1\to U\R^n$ and $U\R^n_0\to U\R^n$, analogue to the Moebius geometry where we have Moebius space forms $S^n$, $\H^n$ and $\R^n$ (spaces of constant curvature) and conformal embedding $\H^n\to S^n$ and $\R^n\to S^n$ (cf. [4], [10]). Using these Laguerre embedding we can unify the Laguerre geometry of hypersurfaces in $\R^n$, $\R^n_1$ and $\R^n_0$. As an example we show that minimal surfaces in $\R^3_1$ or $\R_0^3$ are Laguerre minimal in $\R^3$.
