M2Net: Multi-modal Multi-channel Network for Overall Survival Time Prediction of Brain Tumor Patients

Early and accurate prediction of overall survival (OS) time can help to obtain better treatment planning for brain tumor patients. Although many OS time prediction methods have been developed and obtain promising results, there are still several issues. First, conventional prediction methods rely on radiomic features at the local lesion area of a magnetic resonance (MR) volume, which may not represent the full image or model complex tumor patterns. Second, different types of scanners (i.e., multi-modal data) are sensitive to different brain regions, which makes it challenging to effectively exploit the complementary information across multiple modalities and also preserve the modality-specific properties. Third, existing methods focus on prediction models, ignoring complex data-to-label relationships. To address the above issues, we propose an end-to-end OS time prediction model; namely, Multi-modal Multi-channel Network (M2Net). Specifically, we first project the 3D MR volume onto 2D images in different directions, which reduces computational costs, while preserving important information and enabling pre-trained models to be transferred from other tasks. Then, we use a modality-specific network to extract implicit and high-level features from different MR scans. A multi-modal shared network is built to fuse these features using a bilinear pooling model, exploiting their correlations to provide complementary information. Finally, we integrate the outputs from each modality-specific network and the multi-modal shared network to generate the final prediction result. Experimental results demonstrate the superiority of our M2Net model over other methods.

Diagnosis of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) with Structured Latent Multi-View Representation Learning

Recently, the outbreak of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) has spread rapidly across the world. Due to the large number of affected patients and heavy labor for doctors, computer-aided diagnosis with machine learning algorithm is urgently needed, and could largely reduce the efforts of clinicians and accelerate the diagnosis process. Chest computed tomography (CT) has been recognized as an informative tool for diagnosis of the disease. In this study, we propose to conduct the diagnosis of COVID-19 with a series of features extracted from CT images. To fully explore multiple features describing CT images from different views, a unified latent representation is learned which can completely encode information from different aspects of features and is endowed with promising class structure for separability. Specifically, the completeness is guaranteed with a group of backward neural networks (each for one type of features), while by using class labels the representation is enforced to be compact within COVID-19/community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) and also a large margin is guaranteed between different types of pneumonia. In this way, our model can well avoid overfitting compared to the case of directly projecting highdimensional features into classes. Extensive experimental results show that the proposed method outperforms all comparison methods, and rather stable performances are observed when varying the numbers of training data.

Ball k-means

This paper presents a novel accelerated exact k-means algorithm called the Ball k-means algorithm, which uses a ball to describe a cluster, focusing on reducing the point-centroid distance computation. The Ball k-means can accurately find the neighbor clusters for each cluster resulting distance computations only between a point and its neighbor clusters' centroids instead of all centroids. Moreover, each cluster can be divided into a stable area and an active area, and the later one can be further divided into annulus areas. The assigned cluster of the points in the stable area is not changed in the current iteration while the points in the annulus area will be adjusted within a few neighbor clusters in the current iteration. Also, there are no upper or lower bounds in the proposed Ball k-means. Furthermore, reducing centroid-centroid distance computation between iterations makes it efficient for large k clustering. The fast speed, no extra parameters and simple design of the Ball k-means make it an all-around replacement of the naive k-means algorithm.

Deep Vocoder: Low Bit Rate Compression of Speech with Deep Autoencoder

Inspired by the success of deep neural networks (DNNs) in speech processing, this paper presents Deep Vocoder, a direct end-to-end low bit rate speech compression method with deep autoencoder (DAE). In Deep Vocoder, DAE is used for extracting the latent representing features (LRFs) of speech, which are then efficiently quantized by an analysis-by-synthesis vector quantization (AbS VQ) method. AbS VQ aims to minimize the perceptual spectral reconstruction distortion rather than the distortion of LRFs vector itself. Also, a suboptimal codebook searching technique is proposed to further reduce the computational complexity. Experimental results demonstrate that Deep Vocoder yields substantial improvements in terms of frequency-weighted segmental SNR, STOI and PESQ score when compared to the output of the conventional SQ- or VQ-based codec. The yielded PESQ score over the TIMIT corpus is 3.34 and 3.08 for speech coding at 2400 bit/s and 1200 bit/s, respectively.

Unsupervised Degradation Learning for Single Image Super-Resolution

Deep Convolution Neural Networks (CNN) have achieved significant performance on single image super-resolution (SR) recently. However, existing CNN-based methods use artificially synthetic low-resolution (LR) and high-resolution (HR) image pairs to train networks, which cannot handle real-world cases since the degradation from HR to LR is much more complex than manually designed. To solve this problem, we propose a real-world LR images guided bi-cycle network for single image super-resolution, in which the bidirectional structural consistency is exploited to train both the degradation and SR reconstruction networks in an unsupervised way. Specifically, we propose a degradation network to model the real-world degradation process from HR to LR via generative adversarial networks, and these generated realistic LR images paired with real-world HR images are exploited for training the SR reconstruction network, forming the first cycle. Then in the second reverse cycle, consistency of real-world LR images are exploited to further stabilize the training of SR reconstruction and degradation networks. Extensive experiments on both synthetic and real-world images demonstrate that the proposed algorithm performs favorably against state-of-the-art single image SR methods.

Disc-aware Ensemble Network for Glaucoma Screening from Fundus Image

Glaucoma is a chronic eye disease that leads to irreversible vision loss. Most of the existing automatic screening methods firstly segment the main structure, and subsequently calculate the clinical measurement for detection and screening of glaucoma. However, these measurement-based methods rely heavily on the segmentation accuracy, and ignore various visual features. In this paper, we introduce a deep learning technique to gain additional image-relevant information, and screen glaucoma from the fundus image directly. Specifically, a novel Disc-aware Ensemble Network (DENet) for automatic glaucoma screening is proposed, which integrates the deep hierarchical context of the global fundus image and the local optic disc region. Four deep streams on different levels and modules are respectively considered as global image stream, segmentation-guided network, local disc region stream, and disc polar transformation stream. Finally, the output probabilities of different streams are fused as the final screening result. The experiments on two glaucoma datasets (SCES and new SINDI datasets) show our method outperforms other state-of-the-art algorithms.

K-means clustering for efficient and robust registration of multi-view point sets

Generally, there are three main factors that determine the practical usability of registration, i.e., accuracy, robustness, and efficiency. In real-time applications, efficiency and robustness are more important. To promote these two abilities, we cast the multi-view registration into a clustering task. All the centroids are uniformly sampled from the initially aligned point sets involved in the multi-view registration, which makes it rather efficient and effective for the clustering. Then, each point is assigned to a single cluster and each cluster centroid is updated accordingly. Subsequently, the shape comprised by all cluster centroids is used to sequentially estimate the rigid transformation for each point set. For accuracy and stability, clustering and transformation estimation are alternately and iteratively applied to all point sets. We tested our proposed approach on several benchmark datasets and compared it with state-of-the-art approaches. Experimental results validate its efficiency and robustness for the registration of multi-view point sets.

Saliency Detection for Stereoscopic Images Based on Depth Confidence Analysis and Multiple Cues Fusion

Stereoscopic perception is an important part of human visual system that allows the brain to perceive depth. However, depth information has not been well explored in existing saliency detection models. In this letter, a novel saliency detection method for stereoscopic images is proposed. Firstly, we propose a measure to evaluate the reliability of depth map, and use it to reduce the influence of poor depth map on saliency detection. Then, the input image is represented as a graph, and the depth information is introduced into graph construction. After that, a new definition of compactness using color and depth cues is put forward to compute the compactness saliency map. In order to compensate the detection errors of compactness saliency when the salient regions have similar appearances with background, foreground saliency map is calculated based on depth-refined foreground seeds selection mechanism and multiple cues contrast. Finally, these two saliency maps are integrated into a final saliency map through weighted-sum method according to their importance. Experiments on two publicly available stereo datasets demonstrate that the proposed method performs better than other 10 state-of-the-art approaches.
