A scheme for neutrino mass generation through modified Higgs mechanism

We propose a new method for neutrino mass generation through a modified Higgs mechanism by introducing an additional tiny vacuum breaking to the charged Higgs field. With identical particle spectrum as standard electroweak model, this modified Higgs mechanism endows the lepton-Higgs Yukawa coupling Lagrangian with a modified lepton mass matrix. Inserting the latest data of particle experiments into this modified lepton mass matrix enable us to locate the value of the newly introduced parameter parametrizing the extra perturbative Higgs vacuum breaking and produce masses for neutrinos of three generations. We reach a sum of three-generation neutrino massess at: $Σ_{(ν)} ~ m_ν \approx 0.104078 ~eV$. This prediction is supported by the result of the latest cosmological observation, i.e. the 95\% C.L. upper bound $Σ_{(ν)} ~ m_ν < 0.176 ~eV$ determined by the Planck data. In our proposal of the modified Higgs mechanism, the Higgs vacua break twice, such that, the very minuteness of the extra Higgs vacuum breaking explains the origin of the very minuteness of neutrino masses, while the relative greatness of the standard Higgs vacuum breaking is recognized as the origin of the relative greatness of charged lepton masses. This proposal can bring rich new physics to Higgs-relevant problems in particle physics, besides the massive neutrino problems.

Minimal area surfaces in AdS_{n+1} and Wilson loops

The AdS/CFT correspondence relates the expectation value of Wilson loops in N=4 SYM to the area of minimal surfaces in AdS_5 In this paper we consider minimal area surfaces in generic Euclidean AdS_{n+1} using the Pohlmeyer reduction in a similar way as we did previously in Euclidean AdS_3. As in that case, the main obstacle is to find the correct parameterization of the curve in terms of a conformal parameter. Once that is done, the boundary conditions for the Pohlmeyer fields are obtained in terms of conformal invariants of the curve. After solving the Pohlmeyer equations, the area can be expressed as a boundary integral involving a generalization of the conformal arc-length, curvature and torsion of the curve. Furthermore, one can introduce the λ-deformation symmetry of the contours by a simple change in the conformal invariants. This determines the λ-deformed contours in terms of the solution of a boundary linear problem. In fact the condition that all λdeformed contours are periodic can be used as an alternative to solving the Pohlmeyer equations and is equivalent to imposing the vanishing of an infinite set of conserved charges derived from integrability.

Constraining the Existence of Magnetic Monopoles by Dirac-Dual Electric Charge Renormalization Effect Under the Planck Scale Limit

It was suggested by dimensional analysis that there exists a limit called the Planck energy scale coming close to which the gravitational effects of physical processes would inflate and struggle for equal rights so as to spoil the validity of pure non-gravitational physical theories that governed well below the Planck energy. Near the Planck scale, the Planck charges, Planck currents, or Planck parameters can be defined and assigned to physical quantities such as the single particle electric charge and magnetic charge as the ceiling value obeyed by the low energy ordinary physics. The Dirac electric-magnetic charge quantization relation as one form of electric-magnetic duality dictates that, the present low value electric charge corresponds to a huge magnetic charge value already passed the Planck limit so as to render theories of magnetic monopoles into the strong coupling regime, and vice versa, that small and tractable magnetic charge values correspond to huge electric charge values. It suggests that for theoretic models in which the renormalization group equation provides rapid growth for the running electric coupling constant, it is easier for the dual magnetic monopoles to emerge at lower energy scales. Allowing charges to vary with the Dirac electric-magnetic charge quantization relation while keeping values under the Planck limit informs that the magnetic charge value drops below the Planck ceiling value into the manageable region when the electric coupling constant grows to one fourth at a model dependent energy scale, and continues dropping towards half the value of the Planck magnetic charge as the electric coupling constant continues growing at the model dependent rate towards one near Planck energy scale.

Minimal area surfaces dual to Wilson loops and the Mathieu equation

The AdS/CFT correspondence relates Wilson loops in N=4 SYM to minimal area surfaces in $AdS_5\times S^5$ space. Recently, a new approach to study minimal area surfaces in $AdS_3 \subset AdS_5$ was discussed based on a Schroedinger equation with a periodic potential determined by the Schwarzian derivative of the shape of the Wilson loop. Here we use the Mathieu equation, a standard example of a periodic potential, to obtain a class of Wilson loops such that the area of the dual minimal area surface can be computed analytically in terms of eigenvalues of such equation. As opposed to previous examples, these minimal surfaces have an umbilical point (where the principal curvatures are equal) and are invariant under $λ$-deformations. In various limits they reduce to the single and multiple wound circular Wilson loop and to the regular light-like polygons studied by Alday and Maldacena. In this last limit, the periodic potential becomes a series of deep wells each related to a light-like segment. Small corrections are described by a tight--binding approximation. In the circular limit they are well approximated by an expansion developed by A.Dekel. In the particular case of no umbilical points they reduce to a previous solution proposed by J. Toledo. The construction works both in Euclidean and Minkowski signature of $AdS_3$.
