Coexistence of nontrivial topological properties and strong ferromagnetic fluctuations in $A_2$Cr$_3$As$_3$ ($A$=Na, K, Rb and Cs)

Superconductivity in crystals without inversion symmetry has received extensive attention due to its unconventional pairing and possible nontrivial topological properties. Using first-principles calculations, we systemically study the electronic structure of noncentrosymmetric superconductors $A_2$Cr$_3$As$_3$ ($A$=Na, K, Rb and Cs). Topologically protected triply degenerate points connected by one-dimensional arcs appear along the $C_{3}$ axis, coexisting with strong ferromagnetic (FM) fluctuations in the non-superconducting state. Within random phase approximation, our calculations show that strong enhancements of spin fluctuations are present in K$_2$Cr$_3$As$_3$ and Rb$_2$Cr$_3$As$_3$, and are substantially reduced in Na$_2$Cr$_3$As$_3$ and Cs$_2$Cr$_3$As$_3$. Symmetry analysis of spin-orbit coupling $g_{k}$ suggests that the arc surface states might remain stable in the superconducting state, giving rise to possible nontrivial topological properties.

From Trivial Kondo Insulator Ce$_3$Pt$_3$Bi$_4$ to Topological Nodal-line Semimetal Ce$_3$Pd$_3$Bi$_4$

Using the density functional theory combined with dynamical mean-field theory, we have performed systematic study of the electronic structure and its band topology properties of Ce$_3$Pt$_3$Bi$_4$ and Ce$_3$Pd$_3$Bi$_4$. At high temperatures ($\sim$290K), the electronic structures of both compounds resemble the open-core 4$f$ density functional calculation results. For Ce$_3$Pt$_3$Bi$_4$, clear hybridization gap can be observed below 72K, and its coherent momentum-resolved spectral function below 18K exhibits an topologically trivial indirect gap of $\sim$6 meV and resembles density functional band structure with itinerant 4$f$ state. For Ce$_3$Pd$_3$Bi$_4$, no clear hybridization gap can be observed down to 4K, and its momentum-resolved spectral function resembles electron-doped open-core 4$f$ density functional calculations. The band nodal points of Ce$_3$Pd$_3$Bi$_4$ at 4K are protected by the gliding-mirror symmetry and form ring-like structure. Therefore, the Ce$_3$Pt$_3$Bi$_4$ compound is topologically trivial Kondo insulator while the Ce$_3$Pd$_3$Bi$_4$ compound is topological nodal-line semimetal.

Angle-dependent magnetoresistance and its implications for Lifshitz transition in W2As3

Lifshitz transition represents a sudden reconstruction of Fermi surface structure, giving rise to anomalies in electronic properties of materials. Such a transition does not necessarily rely on symmetry-breaking and thus is topological. It holds a key to understand the origin of many exotic quantum phenomena, for example the mechanism of extremely large magnetoresistance (MR) in topological Dirac/Weyl semimetals. Here, we report studies of the angle-dependent MR (ADMR) and the thermoelectric effect in W2As3 single crystal. The compound shows a large unsaturated MR (of about 70000% at 4.2 K and 53 T). The most striking finding is that the ADMR significantly deforms from the horizontal dumbbell-like shape above 40 K to the vertical lotus-like pattern below 30 K. The window of 30-40 K also corresponds substantial changes in Hall effect, thermopower and Nernst coefficient, implying an abrupt change of Fermi surface topology. Such a temperature-induced Lifshitz transition results in a compensation of electron-hole transport and the large MR as well. We thus suggest that the similar method can be applicable in detecting a Fermi-surface change of a variety of quantum states when a direct Fermi-surface measurement is not possible.

PrBi: Topology meets quadrupolar degrees of freedom

Novel materials incorporating electronic degrees of freedom other than charge, including spin, orbital or valley \textit{et al} have manifested themselves to be of the great interests and applicable potentials. Recently, the multipolar degrees of freedom have attracted remarkable attention in the electronic correlated effects. In this work, we systematically studied the transport, magnetic and thermodynamic properties of the topological semimetal candidate PrBi in the framework of crystalline electric field theory. Our results demonstrate the $Γ_3$ non-Kramers doublet as the ground state of Pr$^{3+}$ (4$f^2$) ions. This ground state is nonmagnetic but carries a non-zero quadrupolar moment $\langle\hat{O}_2^0\rangle$. A quadrupolar phase transition is inferred below 0.08 K. No obvious quadrupolar Kondo effect can be identified. Ultrahigh-field quantum oscillation measurements confirm PrBi as a semimetal with non-trivial Berry phase and low total carrier density 0.06 /f.u. We discuss the interplay between low carrier density and $4f^2$ quadrupolar moment, and ascribe the weak quadrupolar ordering and Kondo effect to consequences of the low carrier density. PrBi, thus, opens a new window to the physics of topology and strongly correlated effect with quadrupolar degrees of freedom in the low-carrier-density limit, evoking the need for a reexamination of the Nozières exhaustion problem in the context of multi-channel Kondo effect.

Lifshitz Transition and Nontrivial H-Doping Effect in Cr-based Superconductor KCr$_3$As$_3$H$_x$

We report the first-principles study on the H-intercalated Cr-based superconductor KCr$_3$As$_3$H$_x$. Our results show a paramagnetic ground state for KCr$_3$As$_3$H. The electronic structure consists of two quasi-one-dimensional (Q1D) Fermi-surfaces and one 3D Fermi-surface which are mainly contributed by Cr-d$_{z^2}$, d$_{x^2-y^2}$ and d$_{xy}$ orbitals. The bare electron susceptibility shows a $Γ$-centered imaginary peak, indicating possible ferromagnetic spin fluctuations. Upon moderate hole doping, the system undergoes a Lifshitz transition, which may enhance the Q1D feature of the system. The Bader charge analysis and electron localization functions reveal a strong bonding nature of hydrogen in KCr$_3$As$_3$H, which results in a nontrivial electron doping in KCr$_3$As$_3$H.

Strong band kinks in magic-thickness Yb films arising from interfacial electron-phonon coupling

Interfacial electron-phonon coupling in ultrathin films has attracted much interest; it can give rise to novel effects and phenomena, including enhanced superconductivity. Here we report an observation of strong kinks in the energy dispersions of quantum well states in ultrathin Yb films grown on graphite. These kinks, arising from interfacial electron-phonon coupling, are most prominent for films with a preferred ("magic") thickness of 4 monolayers, which are strained and hole doped by the substrate. The energy position of the kinks agrees well with the optical phonon energy of graphite, and the extracted electron-phonon coupling strength λ shows a large subband dependence, with a maximum value up to 0.6. The kinks decay rapidly with increasing film thickness, consistent with its interfacial origin. The variation of λ is correlated with evolution of the electronic wave function amplitudes at the interface. A Lifshitz transition occurs just beyond the magic thickness where the heavy Yb 5d bands begin to populate right below the Fermi level.

Large Fermi Surface Expansion through Anisotropic c-f Mixing in the Semimetallic Kondo Lattice System CeBi

Using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and resonant ARPES, we report evidence of strong anisotropic conduction-f electron mixing (c-f mixing) in CeBi by observing a largely expanded Ce-5d pocket at low temperature, with no change in the Bi-6p bands. The Fermi surface (FS) expansion is accompanied by a pronounced spectral weight transfer from the local 4f 0 peak of Ce (corresponding to Ce3+) to the itinerant conduction bands near the Fermi level. Careful analysis suggests that the observed large FS change (with a volume expansion of the electron pocket up to 40%) can most naturally be explained by a small valence change (~ 1%) of Ce, which coexists with a very weak Kondo screening. Our work therefore provides evidence for a FS change driven by real charge fluctuations deep in the Kondo limit, which is made possible by the low carrier density.

Dynamic Channel: A Planning Framework for Crowd Navigation

Real-time navigation in dense human environments is a challenging problem in robotics. Most existing path planners fail to account for the dynamics of pedestrians because introducing time as an additional dimension in search space is computationally prohibitive. Alternatively, most local motion planners only address imminent collision avoidance and fail to offer long-term optimality. In this work, we present an approach, called Dynamic Channels, to solve this global to local quandary. Our method combines the high-level topological path planning with low-level motion planning into a complete pipeline. By formulating the path planning problem as graph searching in the triangulation space, our planner is able to explicitly reason about the obstacle dynamics and capture the environmental change efficiently. We evaluate efficiency and performance of our approach on public pedestrian datasets and compare it to a state-of-the-art planning algorithm for dynamic obstacle avoidance.

Electronic structure of Ni-doped EuRbFe$_4$As$_4$: Unique crystal field splitting and multiband RKKY interactions

The relationship between magnetism and superconductivity has been one of the most discussed topics in iron-based superconductors. Using the first-principles calculations, we have studied the electronic structure of 1144-type iron-based superconductor EuRbFe$_4$As$_4$. We find the crystal field splitting of EuRbFe$_4$As$_4$ is unique, such that the $d_{z^2}$ orbitals are closer to the Fermi level $ε_F$ than the $d_{xy}$ orbitals. The RKKY interaction strength is estimated to be approximately 0.12 meV in prestine EuRbFe$_4$As$_4$. Upon Ni-doping on the Fe site, the RKKY interaction strength is barely changed upon Ni doping due to the highly anisotropic FSs and multiband effect, despite of the drastically reduced $d_{zx(y)}$ DOS at $ε_F$. Finally, in both pristine and doped compounds, the RKKY interaction is primarily mediated through bands due to Fe-$d_{z^2}$ orbitals. Our calculations suggest the RKKY interaction mediated by $d_{z^2}$ orbital is probably responsible for the magnetism in EuRbFe$_4$As$_4$ and doesn't change upon Ni-doping.

Tunable Electronic Structure and Surface States in Rare Earth Mono-Bismuthides with Partially Filled f Shell

Here we report the evolution of bulk band structure and surface states in rare earth mono-bismuthides with partially filled f shell. Utilizing synchrotron-based photoemission spectroscopy, we determined the three-dimensional bulk band structure and identified the bulk band inversions near the X points, which, according to the topological theory, could give rise to nontrivial band topology with odd number of gapless topological surface states. Near the surface Gamma bar point, no clear evidence for predicted gapless topological surface state is observed due to its strong hybridization with the bulk bands. Near the M bar point, the two surface states, due to projections from two inequivalent bulk band inversions, interact and give rise to two peculiar sets of gapped surface states. The bulk band inversions and corresponding surface states can be tuned substantially by varying rare earth elements, in good agreement with density-functional theory calculations assuming local f electrons. Our study therefore establishes rare earth mono-bismuthides as an interesting class of materials possessing tunable electronic properties and magnetism, providing a promising platform to search for novel properties in potentially correlated topological materials.

Probing the Origin of Extreme Magnetoresistance in Pr/Sm Mono-Antimonides/Bismuthides

Combining angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and magneto-transport measurements, we systematically investigated the possible origin of the extreme magnetoresistance in Pr/Sm mono-antimonides/bismuthides (PrSb, SmSb, PrBi, SmBi). Our photoemission measurements reveal that the bulk band inversion and surface states are absent (present) in Pr/Sm antimonides (bismuthides), implying that topological surface states are unlikely to play an important role for the observed extreme magnetoresistance. We found that the electron-hole compensation is well satisfied in all these compounds and the bulk band structure exhibits no obvious temperature dependence from 10 K up to 150 K. Simultaneous fittings of the magnetoresistance and Hall coefficient reveal that the carrier mobility is dramatically enhanced at low temperature, which naturally explains the suppression of extreme magnetoresistance at high temperatures. Our results therefore show that the extreme magnetoresistance in these compounds can be well accounted for by the two-band model with good electron-hole compensation. Finally, we found that both PrSb and SmSb exhibit highly linear bulk bands near the X point and lie close to the transition point between a topologically trivial and nontrivial phase, which might be relevant for the observed anomalous quantum oscillations.

Giant anomalous Nernst effect in the magnetic Weyl semimetal Co3Sn2S2

In ferromagnetic solids, even in absence of magnetic field, a transverse voltage can be generated by a longitudinal temperature gradient. This thermoelectric counterpart of the Anomalous Hall effect (AHE) is dubbed the Anomalous Nernst effect (ANE). Expected to scale with spontaneous magnetization, both these effects arise because of the Berry curvature at the Fermi energy. Here, we report the observation of a giant ANE in a newly-discovered magnetic Weyl semimetal Co$_3$Sn$_2$S$_2$ crystal. Hall resistivity and Nernst signal both show sharp jumps at a threshold field and exhibit a clear hysteresis loop below the ferromagnetic transition temperature. The ANE signal peaks a maximum value of about 5 miuV/K which is comparable to the largest seen in any magnetic material. Moreover, the anomalous transverse thermoelectric conductivity becomes as large as about 10 A/K.m at 70 K, the largest in known semimetals. The observed ANE signal is much larger than what is expected according to the magnetization.

Tunable Electronic Structure and Topological Properties of $LnPn$ ($Ln$=Ce, Pr, Gd, Sm, Yb; $Pn$=Sb, Bi)

We have performed systematic first principles study of the electronic structure and band topology properties of $LnPn$ compounds ($Ln$=Ce, Pr, Gd, Sm, Yb; $Pn$=Sb, Bi). Assuming the $f$-electrons are well localized in these materials, both hybrid functional and modified Becke-Johnson calculations yield electronic structure in good agreement with experimental observations, while generalized gradient approximation calculations severely overestimate the band inversions. From Ce to Yb, a systematic reduction of band inversion with respect to the increasing $Ln$ atomic number is observed, and $\mathcal{Z}_2$ for Ce$Pn$ and Yb$Pn$ are [1;000] and [0;000], respectively. In both hybrid functional and modified Becke-Johns calculations, a topologically nontrivial to trivial transition is expected around SmSb for the antimonides and around DyBi for the bismuthides. Such variation is related with lanthanide contraction, but is different from simple pressure effect.

Quantum transport in a compensated semimetal W2As3 with nontrivial Z2 indices

We report a topological semimetal W2As3 with a space group C2/m. Based on the first-principles calculations, band crossings are partially gapped when spin-orbit coupling is included. The Z2 indices at the electron filling are [1;111], characterizing a strong topological insulator and topological surface states. From the magnetotransport measurements, nearly quadratic field dependence of magnetoresistance (MR) (B || [200]) at 3 K indicates an electron-hole compensated compound whose longitudinal MR reaches 115 at 3 K and 15 T. In addition, multiband features are detected from the high-magnetic-field Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) oscillation, Hall resistivity, and band calculations. A nontrivial pi Berry's phase is obtained, suggesting the topological feature of this material. A two- band model can fit well the conductivity and Hall coefficient. Our experiments manifest that the transport properties of W2As3 are in good agreement with the theoretical calculations.

Optical Signatures of Dirac Nodal-lines in NbAs$_2$

Using polarized optical and magneto-optical spectroscopy, we have demonstrated universal aspects of electrodynamics associated with Dirac nodal-lines. We investigated anisotropic electrodynamics of NbAs$_2$ where the spin-orbit interaction triggers energy gaps along the nodal-lines, which manifest as sharp steps in the optical conductivity spectra. We show experimentally and theoretically that shifted 2D Dirac nodal-lines feature linear scaling $σ_1 (ω)\simω$, similar to 3D nodal-points. Massive Dirac nature of the nodal-lines are confirmed by magneto-optical data, which may also be indicative of theoretically predicted surface states. Optical data also offer a natural explanation for the giant magneto-resistance in NbAs$_2$.

Pressure induced superconductivity bordering a charge-density-wave state in NbTe4 with strong spinorbit coupling

Transition-metal chalcogenides host various phases of matter, such as charge-density wave (CDW), superconductors, and topological insulators or semimetals. Superconductivity and its competition with CDW in low-dimensional compounds have attracted much interest and stimulated considerable research. Here we report pressure induced superconductivity in a strong spin-orbit (SO) coupled quasi-one-dimensional (1D) transition-metal chalcogenide NbTe$_4$, which is a CDW material under ambient pressure. With increasing pressure, the CDW transition temperature is gradually suppressed, and superconducting transition, which is fingerprinted by a steep resistivity drop, emerges at pressures above 12.4 GPa. Under pressure $p$ = 69 GPa, zero resistance is detected with a transition temperature $T_c$ = 2.2 K and an upper critical field $H_{c2}$= 2 T. We also find large magnetoresistance (MR) up to 102\% at low temperatures, which is a distinct feature differentiating NbTe$_4$ from other conventional CDW materials.

Magnetoresistance and robust resistivity plateau in MoAs2

We have grown the MoAs$_2$ single crystal which crystallizes in a monoclinic structure with C2/m space group. Transport measurements show that MoAs$_2$ displays a metallic behavior at zero field and undergoes a metal-to-semiconductor crossover at low temperatures when the applied magnetic field is over 5 T. A robust resistivity plateau appears below 18 K and persists for the field up to 9 T. A large positive magnetoresistance (MR), reaching about 2600\% at 2 K and 9 T, is observed when the field is perpendicular to the current. The MR becomes negative below 40 K when the field is rotated to be parallel to the current. The Hall resistivity shows the non-linear field-dependence below 70 K. The analysis using two-band model indicates a compensated electron-hole carrier density at low temperatures. A combination of the breakdown of Kohler's rule, the abnormal drop and the cross point in Hall data implies that a possible Lifshitz transition has occurred between 30 K and 60 K, likely driving the compensated electron-hole density, the large MR as well as the metal-semiconductor transition in MoAs$_2$. Our results indicate that the family of centrosymmetric transition-metal dipnictides has rich transport behavior which can in general exhibit variable metallic and topological features.

Theory for superconductivity in alkali chromium arsenides A2Cr3As3 (A=K,Rb,Cs)

We propose an extended Hubbard model with three molecular orbitals on a hexagonal lattice with $D_{3h}$ symmetry to study recently discovered superconductivity in A$_2$Cr$_3$As$_3$ (A=K,Rb,Cs). Effective pairing interactions from paramagnon fluctuations are derived within the random phase approximation, and are found to be most attractive in spin triplet channels. At small Hubbard $U$ and moderate Hund's coupling, the pairing arises from 3-dimensional (3D) $γ$ band and has a spatial symmetry $f_{y(3x^{2}-y^{2})}$, which gives line nodes in the gap function. At large $U$, a fully gapped $p$-wave state, $p_{z}\hat{z}$ dominates at the quasi-1D $α$-band.
