A Novel Counterfactual Data Augmentation Method for Aspect-Based Sentiment Analysis

Aspect-based-sentiment-analysis (ABSA) is a fine-grained sentiment evaluation task, which analyzes the emotional polarity of the evaluation aspects. Generally, the emotional polarity of an aspect exists in the corresponding opinion expression, whose diversity has great impact on model's performance. To mitigate this problem, we propose a novel and simple counterfactual data augmentation method to generate opinion expressions with reversed sentiment polarity. In particular, the integrated gradients are calculated to locate and mask the opinion expression. Then, a prompt combined with the reverse expression polarity is added to the original text, and a Pre-trained language model (PLM), T5, is finally was employed to predict the masks. The experimental results shows the proposed counterfactual data augmentation method performs better than current augmentation methods on three ABSA datasets, i.e. Laptop, Restaurant, and MAMS.

Measurement of $e^{+}e^{-}\rightarrowηJ/ψ$ Cross Section from $\sqrt{s}=$ 3.808 GeV to 4.951 GeV

Using data samples with an integrated luminosity of 22.42 fb$^{-1}$ collected by the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII storage ring, we measure the cross sections of the $e^{+}e^{-}\rightarrow\etaJ/ψ$ process at center-of-mass energies from 3.808 to 4.951 GeV. Three structures are observed in the line shape of the measured cross sections. A maximum-likelihood fit with $ψ(4040)$, two additional resonances, and a non-resonant component is performed. The mass and width of the first additional state are $(4219.7\pm2.5\pm4.5) \rm{MeV}/\rm{c}^2$ and $(80.7\pm4.4\pm1.4) \rm{MeV}$, respectively, consistent with the $ψ(4230)$. For the second state, the mass and width are $(4386\pm13\pm17) \rm{MeV}/\rm{c}^2$ and $(177\pm32\pm13) \rm{MeV}$, respectively, consistent with the $ψ(4360)$. The first uncertainties are statistical and the second ones are systematic. The statistical significance of $ψ(4040)$ is $8.0σ$ and those for $ψ(4230)$ and $ψ(4360)$ are more than $10.0σ$.

First measurement of $ΛN$ inelastic scattering with $Λ$ from $e^{+} e^{-} \rightarrow J/ψ\to Λ\barΛ$

Using an $e^+ e^-$ collision data sample of $(10087 \pm 44)\times10^6 ~J/ψ$ events taken at the center-of-mass energy of $3.097~\rm{GeV}$ by the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider, the process $Λ+N \rightarrow Σ^+ + X$ is studied for the first time employing a novel method. The $Σ^{+}$ hyperons are produced by the collisions of $Λ$ hyperons from $J/ψ$ decays with nuclei in the material of the BESIII detector. The total cross section of $Λ+ ^{9}{\rm Be} \rightarrow Σ^+ + X$ is measured to be $σ= (37.3 \pm 4.7 \pm 3.5)~{\rm mb}$ at $Λ$ beam momenta within $[1.057, 1.091]~{\rm GeV}/c$, where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. This analysis is the first study of $Λ$-nucleon interactions at an $e^+ e^-$ collider, providing information and constraints relevant for the strong-interaction potential, the origin of color confinement, the unified model for baryon-baryon interactions, and the internal structure of neutron stars.

Updated measurements of the M1 transition $ψ(3686) \to γη_{c}(2S)$ with $η_{c}(2S) \to K \bar{K} π$

Based on a data sample of $(27.08 \pm 0.14 ) \times 10^8~ψ(3686)$ events collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider, the M1 transition $ψ(3686) \to γη_{c}(2S)$ with $η_{c}(2S) \to K\bar{K}π$ is studied, where $K\bar{K}π$ is $K^{+} K^{-} π^{0}$ or $K_{S}^{0}K^{\pm}π^{\mp}$. The mass and width of the $η_{c}(2S)$ are measured to be $(3637.8 \pm 0.8 (\rm {stat}) \pm 0.2 (\rm {syst}))$ MeV/$c^{2}$ and $(10.5 \pm 1.7 (\rm {stat}) \pm 3.5 (\rm {syst}))$ MeV, respectively. The product branching fraction $\mathcal{B}\left(ψ(3686) \rightarrow γη_{c}(2 S)\right) \times \mathcal{B}(η_{c}(2 S) \rightarrow K \bar{K} π)$ is determined to be $(0.97 \pm 0.06 (\rm {stat}) \pm 0.09 (\rm {syst})) \times 10^{-5}$. Using $\mathcal{BR}(η_{c}(2S)\to K\bar{K}π)=(1.86^{+0.68}_{-0.49})\%$, we obtain the branching fraction of the radiative transition to be $\mathcal{BR}(ψ(3686) \to γη_{c}(2S)) = (5.2 \pm 0.3 (\rm {stat}) \pm 0.5 (\rm {syst}) ^{+1.9}_{-1.4} (extr)) \times 10^{-4}$, where the third uncertainty is due to the quoted $\mathcal{BR}(η_{c}(2S) \to K\bar{K}π)$.

Learning to Abstain From Uninformative Data

Learning and decision-making in domains with naturally high noise-to-signal ratio, such as Finance or Healthcare, is often challenging, while the stakes are very high. In this paper, we study the problem of learning and acting under a general noisy generative process. In this problem, the data distribution has a significant proportion of uninformative samples with high noise in the label, while part of the data contains useful information represented by low label noise. This dichotomy is present during both training and inference, which requires the proper handling of uninformative data during both training and testing. We propose a novel approach to learning under these conditions via a loss inspired by the selective learning theory. By minimizing this loss, the model is guaranteed to make a near-optimal decision by distinguishing informative data from uninformative data and making predictions. We build upon the strength of our theoretical guarantees by describing an iterative algorithm, which jointly optimizes both a predictor and a selector, and evaluates its empirical performance in a variety of settings.

Coco-LIC: Continuous-Time Tightly-Coupled LiDAR-Inertial-Camera Odometry using Non-Uniform B-spline

In this paper, we propose an efficient continuous-time LiDAR-Inertial-Camera Odometry, utilizing non-uniform B-splines to tightly couple measurements from the LiDAR, IMU, and camera. In contrast to uniform B-spline-based continuous-time methods, our non-uniform B-spline approach offers significant advantages in terms of achieving real-time efficiency and high accuracy. This is accomplished by dynamically and adaptively placing control points, taking into account the varying dynamics of the motion. To enable efficient fusion of heterogeneous LiDAR-Inertial-Camera data within a short sliding-window optimization, we assign depth to visual pixels using corresponding map points from a global LiDAR map, and formulate frame-to-map reprojection factors for the associated pixels in the current image frame. This way circumvents the necessity for depth optimization of visual pixels, which typically entails a lengthy sliding window with numerous control points for continuous-time trajectory estimation. We conduct dedicated experiments on real-world datasets to demonstrate the advantage and efficacy of adopting non-uniform continuous-time trajectory representation. Our LiDAR-Inertial-Camera odometry system is also extensively evaluated on both challenging scenarios with sensor degenerations and large-scale scenarios, and has shown comparable or higher accuracy than the state-of-the-art methods. The codebase of this paper will also be open-sourced at https://github.com/APRIL-ZJU/Coco-LIC.

Cosmological Standard Timers from Unstable Primordial Relics

In this article we study a hypothetical possibility of tracking the evolution of our Universe by introducing a series of the so-called standard timers. Any unstable primordial relics generated in the very early Universe may serve as the standard timers, as they can evolve through the whole cosmological background until their end while their certain time-varying properties could be a possible timer by recording the amount of physical time elapsed since the very early moments. Accordingly, if one could observe these quantities at different redshifts, then a redshift-time relation of the cosmic history can be attained. To illustrate such a hypothetical possibility, we consider the primordial black hole bubbles as a concrete example and analyze the mass function inside a redshifted bubble by investigating the inverse problem of Hawking radiation. To complete the analyses theoretically, the mass distribution can serve as a calibration of the standard timers.

Adaptive Encoding Strategies for Erasing-Based Lossless Floating-Point Compression

Lossless floating-point time series compression is crucial for a wide range of critical scenarios. Nevertheless, it is a big challenge to compress time series losslessly due to the complex underlying layouts of floating-point values. The state-of-the-art erasing-based compression algorithm Elf demonstrates a rather impressive performance. We give an in-depth exploration of the encoding strategies of Elf, and find that there is still much room for improvement. In this paper, we propose Elf*, which employs a set of optimizations for leading zeros, center bits and sharing condition. Specifically, we develop a dynamic programming algorithm with a set of pruning strategies to compute the adaptive approximation rules efficiently. We theoretically prove that the adaptive approximation rules are globally optimal. We further extend Elf* to Streaming Elf*, i.e., SElf*, which achieves almost the same compression ratio as Elf*, while enjoying even higher efficiency in streaming scenarios. We compare Elf* and SElf* with 8 competitors using 22 datasets. The results demonstrate that SElf* achieves 9.2% relative compression ratio improvement over the best streaming competitor while maintaining similar efficiency, and that Elf* ranks among the most competitive batch compressors. All source codes are publicly released.

Client-side Gradient Inversion Against Federated Learning from Poisoning

Federated Learning (FL) enables distributed participants (e.g., mobile devices) to train a global model without sharing data directly to a central server. Recent studies have revealed that FL is vulnerable to gradient inversion attack (GIA), which aims to reconstruct the original training samples and poses high risk against the privacy of clients in FL. However, most existing GIAs necessitate control over the server and rely on strong prior knowledge including batch normalization and data distribution information. In this work, we propose Client-side poisoning Gradient Inversion (CGI), which is a novel attack method that can be launched from clients. For the first time, we show the feasibility of a client-side adversary with limited knowledge being able to recover the training samples from the aggregated global model. We take a distinct approach in which the adversary utilizes a malicious model that amplifies the loss of a specific targeted class of interest. When honest clients employ the poisoned global model, the gradients of samples belonging to the targeted class are magnified, making them the dominant factor in the aggregated update. This enables the adversary to effectively reconstruct the private input belonging to other clients using the aggregated update. In addition, our CGI also features its ability to remain stealthy against Byzantine-robust aggregation rules (AGRs). By optimizing malicious updates and blending benign updates with a malicious replacement vector, our method remains undetected by these defense mechanisms. To evaluate the performance of CGI, we conduct experiments on various benchmark datasets, considering representative Byzantine-robust AGRs, and exploring diverse FL settings with different levels of adversary knowledge about the data. Our results demonstrate that CGI consistently and successfully extracts training input in all tested scenarios.

Measurements of the absolute branching fractions of $Ω^-$ decays and test of the $ΔI = 1/2$ rule

Based on a data set of $(27.12\pm0.10)\times 10^8$ $ψ(3686)$ events collected at the BESIII experiment, the absolute branching fractions of the three dominant $Ω^-$ decays are measured to be $\mathcal{B}_{Ω^- \to Ξ^0 π^-} = (25.03\pm0.44\pm0.53)\%$, $\mathcal{B}_{Ω^- \to Ξ^- π^0} = (8.43\pm0.52\pm0.28)\%$, and $\mathcal{B}_{Ω^- \to ΛK^-} = (66.3\pm0.8\pm2.0)\%$, where the first and second uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. The ratio between $\mathcal{B}_{Ω^- \to Ξ^0 π^-}$ and $\mathcal{B}_{Ω^- \to Ξ^- π^0}$ is determined to be $2.97\pm0.19\pm0.11$, which is in good agreement with the PDG value of $2.74\pm0.15$, but greater by more than four standard deviations than the theoretical prediction of 2 obtained from the $ΔI = 1/2$ rule.

Measurement of $e^{+}e^{-}\toϕη'$ cross sections at center-of-mass energies from 3.508 to 4.951 GeV and search for the decay $ψ(3770)\toϕη'$

The cross sections of the $e^{+}e^{-}\toϕη'$ process at center-of-mass energies from 3.508 to 4.951 GeV are measured with high precision using 26.1 fb$^{-1}$ data collected with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII storage ring. The cross sections are of the order of a few picobarn, and decrease as the center-of-mass energy increases as $s^{-n/2}$ with $n=4.35\pm 0.14$. This result is in agreement with the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model prediction of $n=3.5\pm 0.9$. In addition, the charmless decay $ψ(3770)\toϕη'$ is searched for by fitting the measured cross sections, yet no significant signal is observed. The upper limit of ${\cal B}(ψ(3770)\toϕη')$ at the 90\% confidence level is determined to be $2.3\times 10^{-5}$.

Novel method to extract the femtometer structure of strange baryons using the vacuum polarization effect

One of the fundamental goals of particle physics is to gain microscopic understanding of the strong interaction. Electromagnetic form factors quantify the structure of hadrons in terms of charge and magnetization distributions. While the nucleon structure has been investigated extensively, data on hyperons is still scarce. It has recently been demonstrated that electron-positron annihilations into hyperon-antihyperon pairs provide a powerful tools to investigate their inner structure. We present a novel method useful for hyperon-antihyperon pairs of different types which exploits the cross section enhancement due to the vacuum polarization effect at the $J/ψ$ resonance. Using the 10 billion $J/ψ$ events collected with the BESIII detector, this allows a thorough determination of the hyperon structure . The result is essentially a precise snapshot of a $\barΛΣ^0$~($Λ\barΣ^0$) pair in the making, encoded in the form factor ratio and the phase. Their values are measured to be $R = 0.860\pm0.029({\rm stat.})\pm0.010({\rm syst.})$, $ΔΦ_1=(1.011\pm0.094({\rm stat.})\pm0.010({\rm syst.}))~\rm rad$ for $\barΛΣ^0$ and $ΔΦ_2=(2.128\pm0.094({\rm stat.})\pm0.010({\rm syst.}))~\rm rad$ for $Λ\barΣ^0$, respectively. Furthermore, charge-parity (CP) breaking is investigated for the first time in this reaction and found to be consistent with CP symmetry.

A coupled-channel analysis of the $X(3872)$ lineshape with BESIII data

We perform a study of the $X(3872)$ lineshape using the data samples of $e^+e^-\toγX(3872)$, $X(3872)\to D^0\bar{D}^0 π^0$ and $π^+π^- J/ψ$ collected with the BESIII detector. Measurement of branching fractions of $Λ_{c}^{+}$ decays to $Σ^{+} K^{+} K^{-}$, $Σ^{+}ϕ$ and $Σ^{+} K^{+} π^{-}(π^{0})$
