Higher Order Fermionic and Bosonic Operators

This paper studies a particular class of higher order conformally invariant dif- ferential operators and related integral operators acting on functions taking values in particular finite dimensional irreducible representations of the Spin group. The differential operators can be seen as a generalization to higher spin spaces of kth- powers of the Euclidean Dirac operator. To construct these operators, we use the framework of higher spin theory in Clifford analysis, in which irreducible represen- tations of the Spin group are realized as polynomial spaces satisfying a particular system of differential equations. As a consequence, these operators act on functions taking values in the space of homogeneous harmonic or monogenic polynomials de- pending on the order. Moreover, we classify these operators in analogy with the quantization of angular momentum in quantum mechanics to unify the terminology used in studying higher order higher spin conformally invariant operators: for integer and half-integer spin, these are respectively bosonic and fermionic operators. Fundamental solutions and their conformal invariance are presented here.

Third Order Fermionic and Fourth Order Bosonic Operators

This paper continues the work of our previous paper [8], where we generalize kth-powers of the Euclidean Dirac operator D_x to higher spin spaces in the case the target space is a degree one homogeneous polynomial space. In this paper, we reconsider the generalizations of D_x^3 and D_x^4 to higher spin spaces in the case the target space is a degree k homogeneous polynomial space. Constructions of 3rd and 4th order conformally invariant operators in higher spin spaces are given; these are the 3rd order fermionic and 4th order bosonic operators. Fundamental solutions and intertwining operators of both operators are also presented here. These results can be easily generalized to cylinders and Hopf manifolds as in [7].

Variational Analysis of the Ky Fan $k$-norm

In this paper, we will study some variational properties of the Ky Fan $k$-norm $θ=\|\cdot\|_{(k)}$ of matrices, which are closed related to a class of basic nonlinear optimization problems involving the Ky Fan $k$-norm. In particular, for the basic nonlinear optimization problems, we will introduce the concept of nondegeneracy, strict complementarity and the critical cones associated with the generalized equations. Finally, we present the explicit formulas of the conjugate function of the parabolic second order directional derivative of $θ$, which will be referred to as the sigma term of the second order optimality conditions. The results obtain in this paper provide the necessary theoretical foundations for future work on sensitivity and stability analysis of the nonlinear optimization problems involving the Ky Fan $k$-norm.

Higher order fermionic and bosonic operators on cylinders and Hopf manifolds

Higher order higher spin operators are generalizations of $kth$-powers of the Dirac operator. In this paper, we study higher order higher spin operators defined on some conformally flat manifolds, namely cylinders and Hopf manifolds. We will also construct the kernels of these operators on these manifolds.

Convex Optimization Learning of Faithful Euclidean Distance Representations in Nonlinear Dimensionality Reduction

Classical multidimensional scaling only works well when the noisy distances observed in a high dimensional space can be faithfully represented by Euclidean distances in a low dimensional space. Advanced models such as Maximum Variance Unfolding (MVU) and Minimum Volume Embedding (MVE) use Semi-Definite Programming (SDP) to reconstruct such faithful representations. While those SDP models are capable of producing high quality configuration numerically, they suffer two major drawbacks. One is that there exist no theoretically guaranteed bounds on the quality of the configuration. The other is that they are slow in computation when the data points are beyond moderate size. In this paper, we propose a convex optimization model of Euclidean distance matrices. We establish a non-asymptotic error bound for the random graph model with sub-Gaussian noise, and prove that our model produces a matrix estimator of high accuracy when the order of the uniform sample size is roughly the degree of freedom of a low-rank matrix up to a logarithmic factor. Our results partially explain why MVU and MVE often work well. Moreover, we develop a fast inexact accelerated proximal gradient method. Numerical experiments show that the model can produce configurations of high quality on large data points that the SDP approach would struggle to cope with.

Spectral Operators of Matrices

The class of matrix optimization problems (MOPs) has been recognized in recent years to be a powerful tool by researchers far beyond the optimization community to model many important applications involving structured low rank matrices. This trend can be credited to some extent to the exciting developments in the emerging field of compressed sensing. The Löwner operator, which generates a matrix valued function by applying a single-variable function to each of the singular values of a matrix, has played an important role for a long time in solving matrix optimization problems. However, the classical theory developed for Löwner operators has become inadequate in these recent applications. The main objective of this paper is to provide some necessary theoretical foundations for designing numerical methods for solving the MOP. This goal is achieved by introducing and conducting a thorough study on a new class of matrix valued functions, coined as spectral operators of matrices. Several fundamental properties of spectral operators, including the well-definedness, continuity, directional differentiability, Fréchet-differentiability, locally Lipschitzian continuity, $ρ$-order B(ouligand)-differentiability ($0<ρ\leq 1$), $ρ$-order G-semismooth ($0<ρ\leq 1$) and the characterization of Clarke's generalized Jacobian, are systematically studied.
