Sub-10 mK "In-cell" Magnetic Refrigeration for Cryogen-free Cryostats

A design and implementation of "in-cell" magnetic refrigeration to achieve sub-10 mK temperatures T in cryogen-free dilution refrigerators is presented. The ultra low temperatures below 5 mK are attained in finite magnetic fields B up to 1 T. The holding time below 5 mK varies between about 3 to 30 hours, depending on the final magnetic field after demagnetization process. The developed technique can be used to study low dimensional devices at ultra low electron temperatures in the High B/T regime.

Electro-nuclear quantum phase transition in TmVO$_4$

Hyperfine interactions couple nuclear and electronic degrees of freedom. The present work explores how hyperfine coupling within the Tm ions in TmVO$_4$ single crystals affects an electronic ferroquadrupole ordered ground state and its associated field-tuned quantum phase transition. For temperatures below the hyperfine energy scale, the nuclear moments reduce the critical field for the electronic order, resulting in a dramatic back-bending of the phase boundary delineating the ferroquadrupole order. This behavior is well described by a single-ion semiclassical mean-field model. Moreover, analysis of the effective Hamiltonian leads to a prediction of spontaneous nuclear magnetic order mediated by 4$f$ electrons, which in principle persists with the application of orthogonal antisymmetric strain, yielding a proposed electro-nuclear tetracritical point.

Spectrum and low-temperature bulk properties of triangular quantum spin liquid candidate NaYbSe$_2$

We report neutron scattering, pressure-dependent AC calorimetry, and AC magnetic susceptibility measurements of triangular lattice NaYbSe$_2$. We observe a continuum of scattering, which is reproduced by matrix product simulations, and no phase transition is detected in any bulk measurements. Comparison to heat capacity simulations suggest the material is within the Heisenberg spin liquid phase. AC Susceptibility shows a frequency-dependent peak at 40 mK, as has been observed in several triangular magnets.

Superconducting proximity effect in inverted InAs/GaSb quantum well structures with Ta electrodes

We present our recent electronic transport results in top-gated InAs/GaSb quantum well hybrid structures with superconducting Ta electrodes. We show that the transport across the InAs-Ta junction depends largely on the interfacial transparency, exhibiting distinct zero-bias behavior. For a relatively resistive interface a broad conductance peak is observed at zero bias. When a transparent InAs-Ta interface is achieved, a zero-bias conductance dip appears with two coherent-peak-like features forming at bias voltages corresponding to the superconducting gap of Ta. The conductance spectra of the transparent InAs-Ta junction at different gate voltages can be fit well using the standard Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk theory.

Spin Polarization of the 12/5 Fractional Quantum Hall Effect

We have carried out tilt magnetic field (B) studies of the ν=12/5 fractional quantum Hall state in an ultra-high quality GaAs quantum well specimen. Its diagonal magneto-resistance Rxx shows a non-monotonic dependence on tilt angle (θ). It first increases sharply with increasing θ, reaches a maximal value of ~ 70 ohms at θ~ 14^o, and then decreases at higher tilt angles. Correlated with this dependence of Rxx on θ, the 12/5 activation energy (Δ_{12/5}) also shows a non-monotonic tilt dependence. Δ_{12/5} first decreases with increasing θ. Around θ= 14^{o}, Δ_{12/5} disappears as Rxx becomes non-activated. With further increasing tilt angles, Δ_{12/5} reemerges and increases with θ. This tilt B dependence at ν=12/5 is strikingly different from that of the well-documented 5/2 state and calls for more investigations on the nature of its ground state.

Bose glass and Mott glass of quasiparticles in a doped quantum magnet

The low-temperature states of bosonic fluids exhibit fundamental quantum effects at the macroscopic scale: the best-known examples are Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) and superfluidity, which have been tested experimentally in a variety of different systems. When bosons are interacting, disorder can destroy condensation leading to a so-called Bose glass. This phase has been very elusive to experiments due to the absence of any broken symmetry and of a finite energy gap in the spectrum. Here we report the observation of a Bose glass of field-induced magnetic quasiparticles in a doped quantum magnet (Br-doped dichloro-tetrakis-thiourea-Nickel, DTN). The physics of DTN in a magnetic field is equivalent to that of a lattice gas of bosons in the grand-canonical ensemble; Br-doping introduces disorder in the hoppings and interaction strengths, leading to localization of the bosons into a Bose glass down to zero field, where it acquires the nature of an incompressible Mott glass. The transition from the Bose glass (corresponding to a gapless spin liquid) to the BEC (corresponding to a magnetically ordered phase) is marked by a novel, universal exponent governing the scaling on the critical temperature with the applied field, in excellent agreement with theoretical predictions. Our study represents the first, quantitative account of the universal features of disordered bosons in the grand-canonical ensemble.

NMR Experiments on a Three-Dimensional Vibrofluidized Granular Medium

A three-dimensional granular system fluidized by vertical container vibrations was studied using pulsed field gradient (PFG) NMR coupled with one-dimensional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The system consisted of mustard seeds vibrated vertically at 50 Hz, and the number of layers N_ell <= 4 was sufficiently low to achieve a nearly time-independent granular fluid. Using NMR, the vertical profiles of density and granular temperature were directly measured, along with the distributions of vertical and horizontal grain velocities. The velocity distributions showed modest deviations from Maxwell-Boltzmann statistics, except for the vertical velocity distribution near the sample bottom which was highly skewed and non-Gaussian. Data taken for three values of N_ell and two dimensionless accelerations Gamma=15,18 were fit to a hydrodynamic theory, which successfully models the density and temperature profiles including a temperature inversion near the free upper surface.

Measurements of Grain Motion in a Dense, Three-Dimensional Granular Fluid

We have used an NMR technique to measure the short-time, three-dimensional displacement of grains in a system of mustard seeds vibrated vertically at 15g. The technique averages over a time interval in which the grains move ballistically, giving a direct measurement of the granular temperature profile. The dense, lower portion of the sample is well described by a recent hydrodynamic theory for inelastic hard spheres. Near the free upper surface the mean free path is longer than the particle diameter and the hydrodynamic description fails.
