Adversarial Robustness in RGB-Skeleton Action Recognition: Leveraging Attention Modality Reweighter

Deep neural networks (DNNs) have been applied in many computer vision tasks and achieved state-of-the-art (SOTA) performance. However, misclassification will occur when DNNs predict adversarial examples which are created by adding human-imperceptible adversarial noise to natural examples. This limits the application of DNN in security-critical fields. In order to enhance the robustness of models, previous research has primarily focused on the unimodal domain, such as image recognition and video understanding. Although multi-modal learning has achieved advanced performance in various tasks, such as action recognition, research on the robustness of RGB-skeleton action recognition models is scarce. In this paper, we systematically investigate how to improve the robustness of RGB-skeleton action recognition models. We initially conducted empirical analysis on the robustness of different modalities and observed that the skeleton modality is more robust than the RGB modality. Motivated by this observation, we propose the \formatword{A}ttention-based \formatword{M}odality \formatword{R}eweighter (\formatword{AMR}), which utilizes an attention layer to re-weight the two modalities, enabling the model to learn more robust features. Our AMR is plug-and-play, allowing easy integration with multimodal models. To demonstrate the effectiveness of AMR, we conducted extensive experiments on various datasets. For example, compared to the SOTA methods, AMR exhibits a 43.77\% improvement against PGD20 attacks on the NTU-RGB+D 60 dataset. Furthermore, it effectively balances the differences in robustness between different modalities.

Improved SQP and SLSQP Algorithms for Feasible Path-based Process Optimisation

Feasible path algorithms have been widely used for process optimisation due to its good convergence. The sequential quadratic programming (SQP) algorithm is usually used to drive the feasible path algorithms towards optimality. However, existing SQP algorithms may suffer from inconsistent quadratic programming (QP) subproblems and numerical noise, especially for ill-conditioned process optimisation problems, leading to a suboptimal or infeasible solution. In this work, we propose an improved SQP algorithm (I-SQP) and an improved sequential least squares programming algorithm (I-SLSQP) that solves a least squares (LSQ) subproblem at each major iteration. A hybrid method through the combination of two existing relaxations is proposed to solve the inconsistent subproblems for better convergence and higher efficiency. We find that a certain part of the dual LSQ algorithm suffers from serious cancellation errors, resulting in an inaccurate search direction or no viable search direction generated. Therefore, the QP solver is used to solve LSQ subproblems in such a situation. The computational results indicates that I-SLSQP is more robust than fmincon in MATLAB, IPOPT, Py-SLSQP and I-SQP. It is also shown that I-SLSQP and Py-SLSQP is superior to I-SQP for ill-conditioned process optimisation problems, whilst I-SQP is more computationally efficient than I-SLSQP and Py-SLSQP for well-conditioned problems.

Detailed Mapping of the Galactic Disk Structure in the Solar Neighborhood through LAMOST K Dwarfs

The Galactic disk is one of the main components of the Milky Way, which contributes most of the luminosity. Its structure is essential for understanding the formation and evolution of the Milky Way. Using 174,443 K-type dwarf stars observed by both LAMOST and Gaia DR3, we study the disk density profile in the local volume within 1,200 pc. In the azimuthal dimension, we find strong asymmetric signal of the thin disk. The surface density and the scale height of the southern disk significantly change versus the azimuthal angle at the same galactocentric distance $R$. Meanwhile, in the vertical dimension, the scale height of the northern disk has quite different trend than that of the southern one. The scale height of the southern disk shows a decreasing trend with $ϕ\sim-2.5^\circ$, and change to an increasing one with $ϕ\sim5.0^°$. Meanwhile, the scale height of the northern disk has a consistently smaller increase. Finally, we divide the entire sample into three subsamples based on metallicity and all three subsamples show significant non-axisymmetric and north-south asymmetric signals in the Galactic disk. Furthermore, we find that the scale height of the metal-poor ([Fe/H] $<$ -0.4 dex) subsample in the northern disk is greater than that of the metal-rich ([Fe/H] $>$ -0.1 dex) subsample. However, in the southern disk, the scale height exhibits varying relationships across different metallicity slices.

Development of RFSoC-based direct sampling highly multiplexed microwave SQUID readout for future CMB and submillimeter surveys

The SLAC Microresonator Radio Frequency (SMuRF) electronics is being deployed as the readout for the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) telescopes of the Simons Observatory (SO). A Radio Frequency System-on-Chip (RFSoC) based readout of microwave frequency resonator based cryogenic sensors is under development at SLAC as an upgrade path for SMuRF with simplified RF hardware, a more compact footprint, and lower total power consumption. The high-speed integrated data converters and digital data path in RFSoC enable direct RF sampling without analog up and down conversion for RF frequencies up to 6 GHz. A comprehensive optimization and characterization study has been performed for direct RF sampling for microwave SQUID multiplexers, which covers noise level, RF dynamic range, and linearity using a prototype implementation. The SMuRF firmware, including the implementation of closed-loop tone tracking, has been ported to the RFSoC platform and interfaced with the quadrature mixers for digital up and down conversion in the data converter data path to realize a full microwave SQUID multiplexer readout. In this paper, a selection of the performance characterization results of direct RF sampling for microwave SQUID multiplexer readout will be summarized and compared with science-driven requirements. Preliminary results demonstrating the read out of cryogenic sensors using the prototype system will also be presented here. We anticipate our new RFSoC-based SMuRF system will be an enabling readout for on-going and future experiments in astronomy and cosmology, which rely on large arrays of cryogenic sensors to achieve their science goals.

FACOS: Enabling Privacy Protection Through Fine-Grained Access Control with On-chain and Off-chain System

Data-driven landscape across finance, government, and healthcare, the continuous generation of information demands robust solutions for secure storage, efficient dissemination, and fine-grained access control. Blockchain technology emerges as a significant tool, offering decentralized storage while upholding the tenets of data security and accessibility. However, on-chain and off-chain strategies are still confronted with issues such as untrusted off-chain data storage, absence of data ownership, limited access control policy for clients, and a deficiency in data privacy and auditability. To solve these challenges, we propose a permissioned blockchain-based privacy-preserving fine-grained access control on-chain and off-chain system, namely FACOS. We applied three fine-grained access control solutions and comprehensively analyzed them in different aspects, which provides an intuitive perspective for system designers and clients to choose the appropriate access control method for their systems. Compared to similar work that only stores encrypted data in centralized or non-fault-tolerant IPFS systems, we enhanced off-chain data storage security and robustness by utilizing a highly efficient and secure asynchronous Byzantine fault tolerance (BFT) protocol in the off-chain environment. As each of the clients needs to be verified and authorized before accessing the data, we involved the Trusted Execution Environment (TEE)-based solution to verify the credentials of clients. Additionally, our evaluation results demonstrated that our system offers better scalability and practicality than other state-of-the-art designs.

CamCo: Camera-Controllable 3D-Consistent Image-to-Video Generation

Recently video diffusion models have emerged as expressive generative tools for high-quality video content creation readily available to general users. However, these models often do not offer precise control over camera poses for video generation, limiting the expression of cinematic language and user control. To address this issue, we introduce CamCo, which allows fine-grained Camera pose Control for image-to-video generation. We equip a pre-trained image-to-video generator with accurately parameterized camera pose input using Plücker coordinates. To enhance 3D consistency in the videos produced, we integrate an epipolar attention module in each attention block that enforces epipolar constraints to the feature maps. Additionally, we fine-tune CamCo on real-world videos with camera poses estimated through structure-from-motion algorithms to better synthesize object motion. Our experiments show that CamCo significantly improves 3D consistency and camera control capabilities compared to previous models while effectively generating plausible object motion. All-sky Guide Star Catalog for CSST

The China Space Station Telescope (CSST) is a two-meter space telescope with multiple back-end instruments. The Fine Guidance Sensor (FGS) is an essential subsystem of the CSST Precision Image Stability System to ensure the required absolute pointing accuracy and line-of-sight stabilization. In this study, we construct the Main Guide Star Catalog for FGS. To accomplish this, we utilize the information about the FGS and object information from the Gaia Data Release 3. We provide an FGS instrument magnitude and exclude variables, binaries, and high proper motion stars from the catalog to ensure uniform FGS guidance capabilities. Subsequently, we generate a HEALPix index, which provides a hierarchical tessellation of the celestial sphere, and employ the Voronoi algorithm to achieve a homogeneous distribution of stars across the catalog. This distribution ensures adequate coverage and sampling of the sky. The performance of the CSST guide star catalog was assessed by simulating the field of view of the FGS according to the CSST mock survey strategy catalog. The analysis of the results indicates that this catalog provides adequate coverage and accuracy. The catalog's performance meets the FGS requirements, ensuring the functioning of the FGS and its guidance capabilities.

Domain-specific ReAct for physics-integrated iterative modeling: A case study of LLM agents for gas path analysis of gas turbines

This study explores the application of large language models (LLMs) with callable tools in energy and power engineering domain, focusing on gas path analysis of gas turbines. We developed a dual-agent tool-calling process to integrate expert knowledge, predefined tools, and LLM reasoning. We evaluated various LLMs, including LLama3, Qwen1.5 and GPT. Smaller models struggled with tool usage and parameter extraction, while larger models demonstrated favorable capabilities. All models faced challenges with complex, multi-component problems. Based on the test results, we infer that LLMs with nearly 100 billion parameters could meet professional scenario requirements with fine-tuning and advanced prompt design. Continued development are likely to enhance their accuracy and effectiveness, paving the way for more robust AI-driven solutions.

The First Photometric Analysis of Two Low Mass Ratio Contact Binary Systems In TESS Survey

Low mass-ratio (q) contact binary systems are progenitors of stellar mergers such as blue straggles (BS) or fast-rotating FK Com stars. In this study, we present the first light curve analysis of two newly identified low mass-ratio contact binary systems, TIC 55007847 and TIC 63597006, that are identified from TESS. Both stars are classified as A-subtype contact binaries. We obtained the precise orbit periods for the two objects by using the O-C method, i.e. P=0.6117108 d for TIC 55007847 and P=0.7008995 d for TIC 63597006, respectively, and found an obvious periodic signal in the O-C curve of TIC 63597006. We suggest that the periodic signal comes from a third body. We further use the Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) method with PHOEBE to derive the photometric solutions for the two binaries. The photometric solution for this object shows that the contribution of the third body is about 6%. Our analysis revealed that TIC 55007847 has an extremely low mass ratio of q=0.08. By calculating the ratio of spin angular momentum to the orbital angular momentum Js/Jo, we found that TIC 55007847 is very close to the instability threshold with Js/Jo = 0.31, indicating that it may merge into a single, fast-rotating star in the future. For TIC 63597006, q=0.14 and Js/Jo=0.15. This object is in a relatively stable evolutionary status at present.

Compositional Text-to-Image Generation with Dense Blob Representations

Existing text-to-image models struggle to follow complex text prompts, raising the need for extra grounding inputs for better controllability. In this work, we propose to decompose a scene into visual primitives - denoted as dense blob representations - that contain fine-grained details of the scene while being modular, human-interpretable, and easy-to-construct. Based on blob representations, we develop a blob-grounded text-to-image diffusion model, termed BlobGEN, for compositional generation. Particularly, we introduce a new masked cross-attention module to disentangle the fusion between blob representations and visual features. To leverage the compositionality of large language models (LLMs), we introduce a new in-context learning approach to generate blob representations from text prompts. Our extensive experiments show that BlobGEN achieves superior zero-shot generation quality and better layout-guided controllability on MS-COCO. When augmented by LLMs, our method exhibits superior numerical and spatial correctness on compositional image generation benchmarks. Project page: https://blobgen-2d.github.io.

The Catalog of early-type Runaway stars from LAMOST-DR8

Runaway stars are OB-type stars ejected from their birthplace with large peculiar velocities. The leading hypothesis addressed in their formation includes the supernova ejection mechanism and the dynamic ejection scenario. Identification of runaway populations is the first step to investigating their formation and evolution. Here we present our work of searching for Galactic runaway candidate stars from the LAMOST Medium-Resolution Survey DR8 database. After studying the kinematic properties for a collection of 4,432 early-type stars, predominantly B-type stars, using the radial velocity measurements from LAMOST DR8 and astrometric solutions made by Gaia DR3, we identified 229 runaway candidate stars. They span a wide distribution in projected rotational velocities. We investigated the Galactic spatial distribution of the runaway population and noticed that most of them likely reside within the Galactic thin disk. Based upon analyzing the Doppler shifts of the candidate stars, we found two binary runaway candidates displaying velocity variation with estimated orbital periods of 40 and 61 days.

Coherent 3D Portrait Video Reconstruction via Triplane Fusion

Recent breakthroughs in single-image 3D portrait reconstruction have enabled telepresence systems to stream 3D portrait videos from a single camera in real-time, potentially democratizing telepresence. However, per-frame 3D reconstruction exhibits temporal inconsistency and forgets the user's appearance. On the other hand, self-reenactment methods can render coherent 3D portraits by driving a personalized 3D prior, but fail to faithfully reconstruct the user's per-frame appearance (e.g., facial expressions and lighting). In this work, we recognize the need to maintain both coherent identity and dynamic per-frame appearance to enable the best possible realism. To this end, we propose a new fusion-based method that fuses a personalized 3D subject prior with per-frame information, producing temporally stable 3D videos with faithful reconstruction of the user's per-frame appearances. Trained only using synthetic data produced by an expression-conditioned 3D GAN, our encoder-based method achieves both state-of-the-art 3D reconstruction accuracy and temporal consistency on in-studio and in-the-wild datasets.

A born ultramassive white dwarf-hot subdwarf super-Chandrasekhar candidate

Although supernovae is a well-known endpoint of an accreting white dwarf, alternative theoretical possibilities has been discussing broadly, such as the accretion-induced collapse (AIC) event as the endpoint of oxygen-neon (ONe) white dwarfs, either accreting up to or merging to excess the Chandrasekhar limit (the maximum mass of a stable white dwarf). AIC is an important channel to form neutron stars, especially for those unusual systems, which are hardly produced by core-collapse supernovae. However, the observational evidences for this theoretical predicted event and its progenitor are all very limited. In all of the known progenitors, white dwarfs increase in mass by accretion. Here, we report the discovery of an intriguing binary system Lan 11, consisted of a stripped core-helium-burning hot subdwarf and an unseen compact object of 1.08 to 1.35 $M_{\odot}$. Our binary population synthesis calculations, along with the absence of detection from the deep radio observations of the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical Radio Telescope, strongly suggest that the latter is an ONe white dwarf. The total mass of this binary is 1.67 to 1.92 $M_{\odot}$}, significantly excessing the Chandrasekhar limit. The reproduction of its evolutionary history indicates that the unique system has undergone two phases of common envelope ejections, implying a born nature of this massive ONe white dwarf rather than an accretion growth from its companion. These results, together with short orbital period of this binary (3.65 hours), suggest that this system will merge in 500-540 Myr, largely triggering an AIC event, although the possibility of type Ia supernova cannot be fully ruled out. This finding greatly provides valuable constraints on our understanding of stellar endpoints, whatever leading to an AIC or a supernova.

A New Tidal Stream Discovered in Gaia DR3

Thanks to the precise astrometric measurements of proper motions by the Gaia mission, a new tidal stellar stream has been discovered in the northern hemisphere. The distribution of star count shows that the stream is approximately $80$ degrees long and $1.70$ degrees wide. Observations of $21$ member stars, including 14 RR Lyrae stars, indicate that the stream has an eccentric and retrograde orbit with $e=0.58$. The low metallicity, high total energy, and large angular momentum suggest that it is associated with the merging event Sequoia. This discovery suggests the possibility of finding more substructures with high eccentricity orbits, even in the inner halo.

Thin-Shell Object Manipulations With Differentiable Physics Simulations

In this work, we aim to teach robots to manipulate various thin-shell materials. Prior works studying thin-shell object manipulation mostly rely on heuristic policies or learn policies from real-world video demonstrations, and only focus on limited material types and tasks (e.g., cloth unfolding). However, these approaches face significant challenges when extended to a wider variety of thin-shell materials and a diverse range of tasks. While virtual simulations are shown to be effective in diverse robot skill learning and evaluation, prior thin-shell simulation environments only support a subset of thin-shell materials, which also limits their supported range of tasks. We introduce ThinShellLab - a fully differentiable simulation platform tailored for robotic interactions with diverse thin-shell materials possessing varying material properties, enabling flexible thin-shell manipulation skill learning and evaluation. Our experiments suggest that manipulating thin-shell objects presents several unique challenges: 1) thin-shell manipulation relies heavily on frictional forces due to the objects' co-dimensional nature, 2) the materials being manipulated are highly sensitive to minimal variations in interaction actions, and 3) the constant and frequent alteration in contact pairs makes trajectory optimization methods susceptible to local optima, and neither standard reinforcement learning algorithms nor trajectory optimization methods (either gradient-based or gradient-free) are able to solve the tasks alone. To overcome these challenges, we present an optimization scheme that couples sampling-based trajectory optimization and gradient-based optimization, boosting both learning efficiency and converged performance across various proposed tasks. In addition, the differentiable nature of our platform facilitates a smooth sim-to-real transition.

Precise Control of Process Parameters for >23% Efficiency Perovskite Solar Cells in Ambient Air Using an Automated Device Acceleration Platform

Achieving high-performance perovskite photovoltaics, especially in ambient air relies heavily on optimizing process parameters. However, traditional manual methods often struggle to effectively control the key variables. This inherent challenge requires a paradigm shift toward automated platforms capable of precise and reproducible experiments. Herein, we use a fully automated device acceleration platform (DAP) to optimize the process parameters for preparing full perovskite devices using a two-step method in ambient air. Eight process parameters that have the potential to significantly influence device performance are systematically optimized. Specifically, we delve into the impact of the dispense speed of organic ammonium halide, a parameter that is difficult to control manually, on both perovskite film and device performance. Through the targeted design of experiments, we reveal that the dispense speed significantly affects device performance primarily by adjusting the residual PbI2 content in the films. We find that moderate dispense speeds, e.g., 50 μl/s, contribute to top-performance devices. Conversely, too fast or too slow speeds result in devices with relatively poorer performance and lower reproducibility. The optimized parameter set enables us to establish a Standard Operation Procedure (SOP) for additive-free perovskite processing under ambient conditions, which yield devices with efficiencies surpassing 23%, satisfactory reproducibility, and state-of-the-art photo-thermal stability. This research underscores the importance of understanding the causality of process parameters in enhancing perovskite photovoltaic performance. Furthermore, our study highlights the pivotal role of automated platforms in discovering innovative workflows and accelerating the development of high-performing perovskite photovoltaic technologies.

TYC 3340-2437-1: A Quadruple System with A Massive Star

Hierarchical massive quadruple systems are ideal laboratories for examining the theories of star formation, dynamical evolution, and stellar evolution. The successive mergers of hierarchical quadruple systems might explain the mass gap between neutron stars and black holes. Looking for light curves of O-type binaries identified by LAMOST, we find a (2+2) quadruple system: TYC 3340-2437-1, located in the stellar bow-shock nebula (SBN). It has a probability of over 99.99\% being a quadruple system derived from the surface density of the vicinity stars. Its inner orbital periods are 3.390602(89) days and 2.4378(16) days, respectively, and the total mass is about (11.47 + 5.79) + (5.2 + 2.02) = 24.48 $M_{\odot}$. The line-of-sight inclinations of the inner binaries, B$_1$ and B$_2$, are 55.94 and 78.2 degrees, respectively, indicating that they are not co-planar. Based on observations spanning 34 months and the significance of the astrometric excess noise ($D>2$) in Gaia DR3 data, we guess that its outer orbital period might be a few years. If it were true, the quadruple system might form through the disk fragmentation mechanism with outer eccentric greater than zero. This eccentricity could be the cause of both the arc-like feature of the SBN and the noncoplanarity of the inner orbit. The outer orbital period and outer eccentric could be determined with the release of future epoch astrometric data of Gaia.

DIFFTACTILE: A Physics-based Differentiable Tactile Simulator for Contact-rich Robotic Manipulation

We introduce DIFFTACTILE, a physics-based differentiable tactile simulation system designed to enhance robotic manipulation with dense and physically accurate tactile feedback. In contrast to prior tactile simulators which primarily focus on manipulating rigid bodies and often rely on simplified approximations to model stress and deformations of materials in contact, DIFFTACTILE emphasizes physics-based contact modeling with high fidelity, supporting simulations of diverse contact modes and interactions with objects possessing a wide range of material properties. Our system incorporates several key components, including a Finite Element Method (FEM)-based soft body model for simulating the sensing elastomer, a multi-material simulator for modeling diverse object types (such as elastic, elastoplastic, cables) under manipulation, a penalty-based contact model for handling contact dynamics. The differentiable nature of our system facilitates gradient-based optimization for both 1) refining physical properties in simulation using real-world data, hence narrowing the sim-to-real gap and 2) efficient learning of tactile-assisted grasping and contact-rich manipulation skills. Additionally, we introduce a method to infer the optical response of our tactile sensor to contact using an efficient pixel-based neural module. We anticipate that DIFFTACTILE will serve as a useful platform for studying contact-rich manipulations, leveraging the benefits of dense tactile feedback and differentiable physics. Code and supplementary materials are available at the project website https://difftactile.github.io/.
