The Binarity of Early-type Stars from LAMOST Medium-resolution Spectroscopic Survey

Massive binaries play significant roles in many fields. Identification of massive stars, particularly massive binaries, is of great importance. In this paper, by adopting the technique of measuring the equivalent widths of several spectral lines, we identified 9,382 early-type stars from LAMOST medium-resolution survey and divided the sample into four groups, T1 ($\sim$O-B4), T2 ($\sim$B5), T3 ($\sim$B7), and T4 ($\sim$B8-A). The relative radial velocities $RV_{\rm rel}$ were calculated using the Maximum Likelihood Estimation. The stars with significant changes of $RV_{\rm rel}$ and at least larger than 15.57km s$^{-1}$ were identified as spectroscopic binaries. We found that the observed spectroscopic binary fractions for the four groups are $24.6\%\pm0.5\%$, $20.8\%\pm0.6\%$, $13.7\%\pm0.3\%$, and $7.4\%\pm0.3\%$, respectively. Assuming that orbital period ($P$) and mass ratio ($q$) have intrinsic distributions as $f(P) \propto P^π$ (1\textless$P$\textless1000 days) and $f(q) \propto q^κ$ (0.1\textless$q$\textless1), respectively, we conducted a series of Monte-Carlo simulations to correct observational biases for estimating the intrinsic multiplicity properties. The results show that the intrinsic binary fractions for the four groups are 68$\%\pm8\%$, 52$\%\pm3\%$, 44$\%\pm6\%$, and 44$\%\pm6\%$, respectively. The best estimated values for $π$ are -1$\pm0.1$, -1.1$\pm0.05$, -1.1$\pm0.1$, and -0.6$\pm0.05$, respectively. The $κ$ cannot be constrained for groups T1 and T2 and is -2.4$\pm0.3$ for group T3 and -1.6$\pm0.3$ for group T4. We confirmed the relationship of a decreasing trend in binary fractions towards late-type stars. No correlation between the spectral type and the orbital period distribution has been found yet, possibly due to the limitation of observational cadence.

A new symmetric hyperbolic formulation and the local Cauchy problem for the Einstein--Yang--Mills system in the temporal gauge

Motivated by the future stability problem of solutions of the Einstein--Yang--Mills (EYM) system with arbitrary dimension, we aim to (1) construct a tensorial symmetric hyperbolic formulation for the $(n+1)$-dimensional EYM system in the temporal gauge; (2) establish the local well-posedness for the Cauchy problem of EYM equations in the temporal gauge using this tensorial symmetric hyperbolic system. By introducing certain auxiliary variables, we extend essentially the $(n+1)$-dimensional Yang--Mills system to a tensorial symmetric hyperbolic system. On the contrary, this symmetric hyperbolic system with data satisfying some constraints (extending the Yang--Mills constraints) reduces to the Yang--Mills system. Consequently, an equivalence between the EYM and the tensorial symmetric hyperbolic system with a class of specific data set is concluded. Furthermore, a general symmetric hyperbolic system over tensor bundles is studied, with which, we conclude the local well-posedness of the EYM system. It turns out the idea of symmetric hyperbolic formulation of the Yang--Mills field is very useful in prompting a tensorial Fuchsian formalism and proving the future stability for the EYM system with arbitrary dimension (i.e., this new symmetric hyperbolic formulation of EYM manifests well behaved lower order terms for long time evolution), see our companion article [21] with Todd A. Learned Image Compression with Separate Hyperprior Decoders

Learned image compression techniques have achieved considerable development in recent years. In this paper, we find that the performance bottleneck lies in the use of a single hyperprior decoder, in which case the ternary Gaussian model collapses to a binary one. To solve this, we propose to use three hyperprior decoders to separate the decoding process of the mixed parameters in discrete Gaussian mixture likelihoods, achieving more accurate parameters estimation. Experimental results demonstrate the proposed method optimized by MS-SSIM achieves on average 3.36% BD-rate reduction compared with state-of-the-art approach. The contribution of the proposed method to the coding time and FLOPs is negligible.

Noise suppression in a temporal-multimode quantum memory entangled with a photon via asymmetrical photon-collection channel

Quantum interfaces (QIs) that generate entanglement between a multimode atomic memory and a photon forms a multiplexed repeater node and hold promise to greatly improve quantum repeater rates. Recently, the temporal multimode spin-wave memory that is entangled with a photon has been demonstrated with cold atoms. However, due to additional noise generated in multimode operation, the fidelity of spin-wave-photon entanglement significantly decreases with the mode number. So far, the improvement on temporal-multimode entanglement fidelity via suppressing the additional noise remains unexplored. Here, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a scheme that can suppress the additional noise of a temporally-multiplexed QI. The scheme uses an asymmetric channel to collect the photons coming and retrieving from the temporally-multiplexed QI. For making comparisons, we also set up a QI that uses symmetric channel for the photon collections. When the QIs store 14 modes, the measured Bell parameter S for the QIs using the asymmetric and the symmetric photon-collection channels are 2.36+/-0.03 and 2.24+/-0.04, respectively, showing that the QI using the asymmetric channel gives rise to a 3% increase in entanglement fidelity, i.e., a 1.7-fold decrease in the additional noise, compared with the QI using the symmetric one. On the other hand, the 14-mode entanglement QIs that use the asymmetric and symmetric collections preserve the violation of a Bell inequality for storage times up to 25 us and 20 us, respectively, showing that the asymmetric QI has a higher entanglement storage performance.

Generation of entanglement between a highly wave-packet-tunable photon and a spin-wave memory in cold atoms

Controls of waveforms (pulse durations) of single photons are important tasks for effectively interconnecting disparate atomic memories in hybrid quantum networks. So far, the waveform control of single photon that is entangled with an atomic memory remains unexplored. Here, we demonstrated control of waveform length of the photon that is entangled with an atomic spin-wave memory by varying light-atom interaction time in cold atoms. The Bell parameter S as a function of the duration of photon pulse is measured, which shows that violations of Bell equality can be achieved for the photon pulse in the duration range from 40 ns to 50 us, where, S=2.64+/-0.02 and S=2.26+/-0.05 for the 40-ns and 50-μs durations, respectively. The measured results show that S parameter decreases with the increase in the pulse duration. We confirm that the increase in photon noise probability per pulse with the pulse-duration is responsible for the S decrease.

Exploring the stellar rotation of early-type stars in the LAMOST Medium-Resolution Survey. I. Catalog

We derive stellar parameters and abundances (`stellar labels') of 40,034 late-B and A-type main-sequence stars extracted from the Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope Medium Resolution Survey (LAMOST--MRS). The primary selection of our early-type sample was obtained from LAMOST Data Release 7 based on spectral line indices. We employed the Stellar LAbel Machine (SLAM) to derive their spectroscopic stellar parameters, drawing on Kurucz spectral synthesis models with 6000 K $< T_\mathrm{eff} <$ 15,000 K and $-1$ dex $< \mathrm{[M/H]} <$ 1 dex. For a signal-to-noise ratio of $\sim 60$, the cross-validated scatter is $\sim$75 K, 0.06 dex, 0.05 dex, and $\sim 3.5\,\mathrm{km\,s^{-1}}$ for $T_\mathrm{eff}$, $\log g$, [M/H], and $v\sin i$, respectively. A comparison with objects with prior, known stellar labels shows great consistency for all stellar parameters, except for $\log g$. Although this is an intrinsic caveat that comes from the MRS's narrow wavelength coverage, it only has a minor effect on estimates of the stellar rotation rates because of the decent spectral resolution and the profile-fitting method employed. The masses and ages of our early-type sample stars were inferred from non-rotating stellar evolution models. This paves the way for reviewing the properties of stellar rotation distributions as a function of stellar mass and age.

The Early-type Stars from LAMOST survey: Atmospheric parameters

Massive stars play key roles in many astrophysical processes. Deriving atmospheric parameters of massive stars is important to understand their physical properties and thus are key inputs to trace their evolution. Here we report our work on adopting the data-driven technique Stellar LAbel Machine ({\tt SLAM}) with the non-LTE TLUSTY synthetic spectra as the training dataset to estimate the stellar parameters of LAMOST optical spectra for early-type stars. We apply two consistency tests to verify this machine learning method and compare stellar labels given by {\tt SLAM} with that in literature for several objects having high-resolution spectra. We provide the stellar labels of effective temperature ($T_\mathrm{eff}$), surface gravity ($\log{g}$), metallicity ([M/H]), and projected rotational velocity ($v\sin{i}$) for 3,931 and 578 early-type stars from LAMOST Low-Resolution Survey (LAMOST-LRS) and Medium-Resolution Survey (LAMOST-MRS), respectively. To estimate the average statistical uncertainties of our results, we calculated the standard deviation between the predicted stellar label and the pre-labeled published values from the high-resolution spectra. The uncertainties of the four parameters are $σ(T_\mathrm{eff}) = 2,185 $K, $σ(\log{g}) = 0.29$ dex, and $σ(v\sin{i}) = 11\, \rm km\,s^{-1}$ for MRS, and $σ(T_\mathrm{eff}) = 1,642 $K, $σ(\log{g}) = 0.25$ dex, and $σ(v\sin{i}) = 42\, \rm km\,s^{-1}$ for LRS spectra, respectively. We notice that parameters of $T_\mathrm{eff}$, $\log{g}$ and [M/H] can be better constrained using LRS spectra rather than using MRS spectra, most likely due to their broad wavelength coverage, while $v\sin{i}$ is constrained better by MRS spectra than by LRS spectra, probably due to the relatively accurate line profiles of MRS spectra.

A Multiplicative Property for Zero-Sums I

Let $G=C_n\oplus C_n$ and let $k\in [0,n-1]$. We study the structure of sequences of terms from $G$ with maximal length $|S|=2n-2+k$ that fail to contain a nontrivial zero-sum subsequence of length at most $2n-1-k$. For $k\leq 1$, this is the inverse question for the Davenport Constant. For $k=n-1$, this is the inverse question for the $η(G)$ invariant concerning short zero-sum subsequences. The structure in both these cases (known respectively as Property B and Property C) was established in a two-step process: first verifying the multiplicative property that, if the structural description holds when $n=n_1$ and $n=n_2$, then it holds when $n=n_1n_2$, and then resolving the case $n$ prime separately. When $n$ is prime, the structural characterization for $k\in [2,\frac{2n+1}{3}]$ was recently established, showing $S$ must have the form $S=e_1^{[n-1]}\boldsymbol{\cdot}e_2^{[n -1]}\boldsymbol{\cdot} (e_1+e_2)^{[k]}$ for some basis $(e_1,e_2)$ for $G$. It was conjectured that this also holds for $k\in [2,n-2]$ (when $n$ is prime). In this paper, we extend this conjecture by dropping the restriction that $n$ be prime and establish the following multiplicative result. Suppose $k=k_mn+k_n$ with $k_m\in [0,m-1]$ and $k_n\in [0,n-1]$. If the conjectured structure holds for $k_m$ in $C_m\oplus C_m$ and for $k_n$ in $C_n\oplus C_n$, then it holds for $k$ in $C_{mn}\oplus C_{mn}$. This reduces the full characterization question for $n$ and $k$ to the prime case. Combined with known results, this unconditionally establishes the structure for extremal sequences in $G=C_{n}\oplus C_{n}$ in many cases, including when $n$ is only divisible by primes at most $7$, when $n\geq 2$ is a prime power and $k\leq \frac{2n+1}{3}$, or when $n$ is composite and $k=n-d-1$ or $n-2d+1$ for a proper, nontrivial divisor $d\mid n$.

A Multiplicative Property for Zero-Sums II

Let $G=C_n\oplus C_{mn}$ with $n\geq 2$ and $m\geq 1$, and let $k\in [0,n-1]$. It is known that any sequence of $mn+n-1+k$ terms from $G$ must contain a nontrivial zero-sum of length at most $mn+n-1-k$. The associated inverse question is to characterize those sequences with maximal length $mn+n-2+k$ that fail to contain a nontrivial zero-sum subsequence of length at most $mn+n-1-k$. For $k\leq 1$, this is the inverse question for the Davenport Constant. For $k=n-1$, this is the inverse question for the $η(G)$ invariant concerning short zero-sum subsequences. The structure in both these cases is known, and the structure for $k\in [2,n-2]$ when $m=1$ was studied previously with it conjectured that they must have the form $S=e_1^{[n-1]}\boldsymbol{\cdot} e_2^{[n-1]}\boldsymbol{\cdot} (e_1+e_2)^{[k]}$ for some basis $(e_1,e_2)$, with the conjecture established in many cases. We focus on $m\geq 2$. Assuming the conjectured structure holds for $k\in [2,n-2]$ in $C_n\oplus C_n$, we characterize the structure of all sequences of maximal length $mn+n-2+k$ in $C_n\oplus C_{mn}$ that fail to contain a nontrivial zero-sum of length at most $mn+n-1-k$, showing they must have either have the form $S=e_1^{[n-1]}\boldsymbol{\cdot} e_2^{[sn-1]}\boldsymbol{\cdot} (e_1+e_2)^{[(m-s)n+k]}$ for some $s\in [1,m]$ and basis $(e_1,e_2)$ with $\mathsf{ord}(e_2)=mn$, or else have the form $S=g_1^{[n-1]}\boldsymbol{\cdot} g_2^{[n-1]}\boldsymbol{\cdot} (g_1+g_2)^{[(m-1)n+k]}$ for some generating set $\{g_1,g_2\}$ with $\mathsf{ord}(g_1+g_2)=mn$. Additionally, we give a new proof of the precise structure in the case $k=n-1$ for $m=1$. Combined with known results, our results unconditionally establish the structure of extremal sequences in $G=C_n\oplus C_{mn}$ in many cases.

LAMOST Time-Domain Survey: First Results of four $K$2 plates

From Oct. 2019 to Apr. 2020, LAMOST performs a time-domain spectroscopic survey of four $K$2 plates with both low- and med-resolution observations. The low-resolution spectroscopic survey gains 282 exposures ($\approx$46.6 hours) over 25 nights, yielding a total of about 767,000 spectra, and the med-resolution survey takes 177 exposures ($\approx$49.1 hours) over 27 nights, collecting about 478,000 spectra. More than 70%/50% of low-resolution/med-resolution spectra have signal-to-noise ratio higher than 10. We determine stellar parameters (e.g., $T_{\rm eff}$, log$g$, [Fe/H]) and radial velocity (RV) with different methods, including LASP, DD-Payne, and SLAM. In general, these parameter estimations from different methods show good agreement, and the stellar parameter values are consistent with those of APOGEE. We use the $Gaia$ DR2 RV data to calculate a median RV zero point (RVZP) for each spectrograph exposure by exposure, and the RVZP-corrected RVs agree well with the APOGEE data. The stellar evolutionary and spectroscopic masses are estimated based on the stellar parameters, multi-band magnitudes, distances and extinction values. Finally, we construct a binary catalog including about 2700 candidates by analyzing their light curves, fitting the RV data, calculating the binarity parameters from med-resolution spectra, and cross-matching the spatially resolved binary catalog from $Gaia$ EDR3. The LAMOST TD survey is expected to get breakthrough in various scientific topics, such as binary system, stellar activity, and stellar pulsation, etc.

Tolerating Adversarial Attacks and Byzantine Faults in Distributed Machine Learning

Adversarial attacks attempt to disrupt the training, retraining and utilizing of artificial intelligence and machine learning models in large-scale distributed machine learning systems. This causes security risks on its prediction outcome. For example, attackers attempt to poison the model by either presenting inaccurate misrepresentative data or altering the models' parameters. In addition, Byzantine faults including software, hardware, network issues occur in distributed systems which also lead to a negative impact on the prediction outcome. In this paper, we propose a novel distributed training algorithm, partial synchronous stochastic gradient descent (ParSGD), which defends adversarial attacks and/or tolerates Byzantine faults. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our algorithm under three common adversarial attacks again the ML models and a Byzantine fault during the training phase. Our results show that using ParSGD, ML models can still produce accurate predictions as if it is not being attacked nor having failures at all when almost half of the nodes are being compromised or failed. We will report the experimental evaluations of ParSGD in comparison with other algorithms.

Blueshifted hydrogen emission and shock wave of RR Lyrae variables in SDSS and LAMOST

Hydrogen emissions of RR Lyrae variables are the imprints of shock waves traveling through their atmospheres. We develop a pattern recognition algorithm, which is then applied to single-epoch spectra of SDSS and LAMOST. These two spectroscopic surveys covered $\sim$ 10,000 photometrically confirmed RR Lyrae stars. We discovered in total 127 RR Lyrae stars with blueshifted Balmer emission feature, including 103 fundamental mode (RRab), 20 first-overtone (RRc), 3 double-mode (RRd), and 1 Blazhko type (temporary classification for RR Lyrae stars with strong Blazhko modulation in Catalina sky survey that cannot be characterized) RR Lyrae variable. This forms the largest database to date of the properties of hydrogen emission in RR Lyrae variables. Based on ZTF DR5, we carried out a detailed light-curve analysis for the Blazhko type RR Lyrae star with hydrogen emission of long-term modulations. We characterize the Blazhko type RR Lyrae star as an RRab and point out a possible Blazhko period. Finally, we set up simulations on mock spectra to test the performance of our algorithm and on the real observational strategy to investigate the occurrence of the "first apparition".

Binary fraction of O and B-type stars from LAMOST data

Binary stars plays important role in the evolution of stellar populations . The intrinsic binary fraction ($f_{bin}$) of O and B-type (OB) stars in LAMOST DR5 was investigated in this work. We employed a cross-correlation approach to estimate relative radial velocities for each of the stellar spectra. The algorithm described by \cite{2013A&A...550A.107S} was implemented and several simulations were made to assess the performance of the approach. Binary fraction of the OB stars are estimated through comparing the uni-distribution between observations and simulations with the Kolmogorov-Smirnov tests. Simulations show that it is reliable for stars most of whom have $6,7$ and $8$ repeated observations. The uncertainty of orbital parameters of binarity become larger when observational frequencies decrease. By adopting the fixed power exponents of $π=-0.45$ and $κ=-1$ for period and mass ratio distributions, respectively, we obtain that $f_{bin}=0.4_{-0.06}^{+0.05}$ for the samples with more than 3 observations. When we consider the full samples with at least 2 observations, the binary fraction turns out to be $0.37_{-0.03}^{+0.03}$. These two results are consistent with each other in $1σ$.

MiB: Asynchronous BFT with More Replicas

State-of-the-art asynchronous Byzantine fault-tolerant (BFT) protocols, such as HoneyBadgerBFT, BEAT, and Dumbo, have shown a performance comparable to partially synchronous BFT protocols. This paper studies two practical directions in asynchronous BFT. First, while all these asynchronous BFT protocols assume optimal resilience with 3f+1 replicas (where f is an upper bound on the number of Byzantine replicas), it is interesting to ask whether more efficient protocols are possible if relaxing the resilience level. Second, these recent BFT protocols evaluate their performance under failure-free scenarios. It is unclear if these protocols indeed perform well during failures and attacks. This work first studies asynchronous BFT with suboptimal resilience using 5f+1 and 7f+1 replicas. We present MiB, a novel and efficient asynchronous BFT framework using new distributed system constructions as building blocks. MiB consists of two main BFT instances and five other variants. As another contribution, we systematically design experiments for asynchronous BFT protocols with failures and evaluate their performance in various failure scenarios. We report interesting findings, showing asynchronous BFT indeed performs consistently well during various failure scenarios. In particular, via a five-continent deployment on Amazon EC2 using 140 replicas, we show the MiB instances have lower latency and much higher throughput than their asynchronous BFT counterparts.

Learned Video Compression with Residual Prediction and Loop Filter

In this paper, we propose a learned video codec with a residual prediction network (RP-Net) and a feature-aided loop filter (LF-Net). For the RP-Net, we exploit the residual of previous multiple frames to further eliminate the redundancy of the current frame residual. For the LF-Net, the features from residual decoding network and the motion compensation network are used to aid the reconstruction quality. To reduce the complexity, a light ResNet structure is used as the backbone for both RP-Net and LF-Net. Experimental results illustrate that we can save about 10% BD-rate compared with previous learned video compression frameworks. Moreover, we can achieve faster coding speed due to the ResNet backbone. This project is available at https://github.com/chaoliu18/RPLVC.

The Relative Calibration of Radial Velocity for LAMOST Medium Resolution Stellar Spectra

The Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST) started median-resolution spectroscopic (MRS, R$\sim$7500) survey since October 2018. The main scientific goals of MRS, including binary stars, pulsators, and other variable stars are launched with a time-domain spectroscopic survey. However, the systematic errors, including the bias induced from wavelength calibration and the systematic difference between different spectrographs have to be carefully considered during radial velocity measurement. In this work, we provide a technique to correct the systematics in the wavelength calibration based on the relative radial velocity measurements from LAMOST MRS spectra. We show that, for the stars with multi-epoch spectra, the systematic bias which is induced from the exposures of different nights can be well corrected for LAMOST MRS in each spectrograph. And the precision of radial velocity zero-point of multi-epoch time-domain observations reaches below 0.5 km/s . As a by-product, we also give the constant star candidates, which can be the secondary radial-velocity standard star candidates of LAMOST MRS time-domain surveys.

The Flare and Warp of the Young Stellar Disk traced with LAMOST DR5 OB-type stars

We present analysis of the spatial density structure for the outer disk from 8$-$14 \,kpc with the LAMOST DR5 13534 OB-type stars and observe similar flaring on north and south sides of the disk implying that the flaring structure is symmetrical about the Galactic plane, for which the scale height at different Galactocentric distance is from 0.14 to 0.5 \,kpc. By using the average slope to characterize the flaring strength we find that the thickness of the OB stellar disk is similar but flaring is slightly stronger compared to the thin disk as traced by red giant branch stars, possibly implying that secular evolution is not the main contributor to the flaring but perturbation scenarios such as interactions with passing dwarf galaxies should be more possible. When comparing the scale height of OB stellar disk of the north and south sides with the gas disk, the former one is slightly thicker than the later one by $\approx$ 33 and 9 \,pc, meaning that one could tentatively use young OB-type stars to trace the gas properties. Meanwhile, we unravel that the radial scale length of the young OB stellar disk is 1.17 $\pm$ 0.05 \,kpc, which is shorter than that of the gas disk, confirming that the gas disk is more extended than stellar disk. What is more, by considering the mid-plane displacements ($Z_{0}$) in our density model we find that almost all of $Z_{0}$ are within 100 \,pc with the increasing trend as Galactocentric distance increases.

A Quadratic Programming Approach to Manipulation in Real-Time Using Modular Robots

Motion planning in high-dimensional space is a challenging task. In order to perform dexterous manipulation in an unstructured environment, a robot with many degrees of freedom is usually necessary, which also complicates its motion planning problem. Real-time control brings about more difficulties in which robots have to maintain the stability while moving towards the target. Redundant systems are common in modular robots that consist of multiple modules and are able to transformed into different configurations with respect to different needs. Different from robots with fixed geometry or configurations, the kinematics model of a modular robotic system can alter as the robot reconfigures itself, and developing a generic control and motion planning approach for such systems is difficult, especially when multiple motion goals are coupled. A new manipulation planning framework is developed in this paper. The problem is formulated as a sequential linearly constrained quadratic program (QP) that can be solved efficiently. Some constraints can be incorporated into this QP, including a novel way to approximate environment obstacles. This solution can be used directly for real-time applications or as an off-line planning tool, and it is validated and demonstrated on the CKBot and SMORES-EP modular robot platforms.
