Painlevé V, Painlevé XXXIV and the Degenerate Laguerre Unitary Ensemble

In this paper, we study the Hankel determinant associated with the degenerate Laguerre unitary ensemble. This problem originates from the largest or smallest eigenvalue distribution of the degenerate Laguerre unitary ensemble. We derive the ladder operators and its compatibility condition with respect to a general perturbed weight. By applying the ladder operators to our problem, we obtain two auxiliary quantities $R_n(t)$ and $r_n(t)$ and show that they satisfy the coupled Riccati equations, from which we find that $R_n(t)$ satisfies the Painlevé V equation. Furthermore, we prove that $σ_{n}(t)$, a quantity related to the logarithmic derivative of the Hankel determinant, satisfies both the continuous and discrete Jimbo-Miwa-Okamoto $σ$-form of the Painlevé V. In the end, by using Dyson's Coulomb fluid approach, we consider the large $n$ asymptotic behavior of our problem at the soft edge, which gives rise to the Painlevé XXXIV equation.

Painlevé III$'$ and the Hankel Determinant Generated by a Singularly Perturbed Gaussian Weight

In this paper, we study the Hankel determinant generated by a singularly perturbed Gaussian weight $$ w(x,t)=\mathrm{e}^{-x^{2}-\frac{t}{x^{2}}},\;\;x\in(-\infty, \infty),\;\;t>0. $$ By using the ladder operator approach associated with the orthogonal polynomials, we show that the logarithmic derivative of the Hankel determinant satisfies both a non-linear second order difference equation and a non-linear second order differential equation. The Hankel determinant also admits an integral representation involving a Painlevé III$'$. Furthermore, we consider the asymptotics of the Hankel determinant under a double scaling, i.e. $n\rightarrow\infty$ and $t\rightarrow 0$ such that $s=(2n+1)t$ is fixed. The asymptotic expansions of the scaled Hankel determinant for large $s$ and small $s$ are established, from which Dyson's constant appears.

Painlevé Transcendents and the Hankel Determinants Generated by a Discontinuous Gaussian Weight

This paper studies the Hankel determinants generated by a discontinuous Gaussian weight with one and two jumps. It is an extension of Chen and Pruessner \cite{Chen2005}, in which they studied the discontinuous Gaussian weight with a single jump. By using the ladder operator approach, we obtain a series of difference and differential equations to describe the Hankel determinant for the single jump case. These equations include the Chazy II equation, continuous and discrete Painlevé IV. In addition, we consider the large $n$ behavior of the corresponding orthogonal polynomials and prove that they satisfy the biconfluent Heun equation. We also consider the jump at the edge under a double scaling, from which a Painlevé XXXIV appeared. Furthermore, we study the Gaussian weight with two jumps, and show that a quantity related to the Hankel determinant satisfies a two variables' generalization of the Jimbo-Miwa-Okamoto $σ$ form of the Painlevé IV.

Gap Probability Distribution of the Jacobi Unitary Ensemble: An Elementary Treatment, from Finite $n$ to Double Scaling

In this paper, we study the gap probability problem of the (symmetric) Jacobi unitary ensemble of Hermitian random matrices, namely the probability that the interval $(-a,a)\:(0<a<1)$ is free of eigenvalues. Using the ladder operator technique for orthogonal polynomials and the associated supplementary conditions, we derive three quantities instrumental in the gap probability, denoted by $H_{n}(a)$, $R_{n}(a)$ and $r_{n}(a)$. We find that each one satisfies a second order differential equation. We show that after a double scaling, the large second order differential equation in the variable $a$ with $n$ as parameter satisfied by $H_{n}(a)$, can be reduced to the Jimbo-Miwa-Okamoto $σ$ form of the Painlevé V equation.

On the variance of linear statistics of Hermitian random matrices

Linear statistics, a random variable build out of the sum of the evaluation of functions at the eigenvalues of a N times N random matrix,sum[j=1 to N]f(xj) or tr f(M), is an ubiquitous statistical characteristics in random matrix theory. Hermitian random matrix ensembles, under the eigenvalue-eigenvector decomposition give rise to the joint probability density functions of N random variables. We show that if f(.) is a polynomial of degree K, then the variance of trf(M), is of the form,sum[n=1 to K] n(d[n])square, and d[n] is related to the expansion coefficients c[n] of the polynomial f(x) =sum[n=0 to K] c[n] b Pn(x), where Pn(x) are polynomials of degree n, orthogonal with respect to the weights 1/[(b-x)(x-a)]^(1/2), [(b -x)(x -a)]^(1/2), [(b-x)(x-a)]^(1/2)/x; (0 < a < x < b), [(b-x)(x-a)]^(1/2)/[x(1-x)] ; (0 < a < x < b < 1), respectively.

Linear Statistics of Matrix Ensembles in Classical Background

Given a joint probability density function of $N$ real random variables, $\{x_j\}_{j=1}^{N},$ obtained from the eigenvector-eigenvalue decomposition of $N\times N$ random matrices, one constructs a random variable, the linear statistics, defined by the sum of smooth functions evaluated at the eigenvalues or singular values of the random matrix, namely, $\sum_{j=1}^{N}F(x_j).$ For the jpdfs obtained from the Gaussian and Laguerre ensembles, we compute, in this paper the moment generating function $\mathbb{E}_β({\rm exp}(-λ\sum_{j}F(x_j))),$ where $\mathbb{E}_β$ denotes expectation value over the Orthogonal ($β=1$) and Symplectic ($β=4)$ ensembles, in the form one plus a Schwartz function, none vanishing over $\mathbb{R}$ for the Gaussian ensembles and $\mathbb{R}^+$ for the Laguerre ensembles. These are ultimately expressed in the form of the determinants of identity plus a scalar operator, from which we obtained the large $N$ asymptotic of the linear statistics from suitably scaled $F(\cdot).$
