Dispersion entropy: A Measure of Irregularity for Graph Signals

We introduce a novel method, called Dispersion Entropy for Graph Signals, $DE_G$, as a powerful tool for analysing the irregularity of signals defined on graphs. We demonstrate the effectiveness of $DE_G$ in detecting changes in the dynamics of signals defined on synthetic and real-world graphs, by defining mixed processing on random geometric graphs or those exhibiting with small-world properties. Remarkably, $DE_G$ generalises the classical dispersion entropy for univariate time series, enabling its application in diverse domains such as image processing, time series analysis, and network analysis, as well as in establishing theoretical relationships (i.e., graph centrality measures, spectrum). Our results indicate that $DE_G$ effectively captures the irregularity of graph signals across various network configurations, successfully differentiating between distinct levels of randomness and connectivity. Consequently, $DE_G$ provides a comprehensive framework for entropy analysis of various data types, enabling new applications of dispersion entropy not previously feasible, and revealing relationships between graph signals and its graph topology.

A noise-robust Multivariate Multiscale Permutation Entropy for two-phase flow characterisation

Using a graph-based approach, we propose a multiscale permutation entropy to explore the complexity of multivariate time series over multiple time scales. This multivariate multiscale permutation entropy (MPEG) incorporates the interaction between channels by constructing an underlying graph for each coarse-grained time series and then applying the recent permutation entropy for graph signals. Given the challenge posed by noise in real-world data analysis, we investigate the robustness to noise of MPEG using synthetic time series and demonstrating better performance than similar multivariate entropy metrics. Two-phase flow data is an important industrial process characterised by complex, dynamic behaviour. MPEG characterises the flow behaviour transition of two-phase flow by incorporating information from different scales. The experimental results show that MPEG is sensitive to the dynamic of flow patterns, allowing us to distinguish between different flow patterns.

Multivariate permutation entropy, a Cartesian graph product approach

Entropy metrics are nonlinear measures to quantify the complexity of time series. Among them, permutation entropy is a common metric due to its robustness and fast computation. Multivariate entropy metrics techniques are needed to analyse data consisting of more than one time series. To this end, we present a multivariate permutation entropy, $MPE_G$, using a graph-based approach. Given a multivariate signal, the algorithm $MPE_G$ involves two main steps: 1) we construct an underlying graph G as the Cartesian product of two graphs G1 and G2, where G1 preserves temporal information of each times series together with G2 that models the relations between different channels, and 2) we consider the multivariate signal as samples defined on the regular graph G and apply the recently introduced permutation entropy for graphs. Our graph-based approach gives the flexibility to consider diverse types of cross channel relationships and signals, and it overcomes with the limitations of current multivariate permutation entropy.

Permutation Entropy for Graph Signals

Entropy metrics (for example, permutation entropy) are nonlinear measures of irregularity in time series (one-dimensional data). Some of these entropy metrics can be generalised to data on periodic structures such as a grid or lattice pattern (two-dimensional data) using its symmetry, thus enabling their application to images. However, these metrics have not been developed for signals sampled on irregular domains, defined by a graph. Here, we define for the first time an entropy metric to analyse signals measured over irregular graphs by generalising permutation entropy, a well-established nonlinear metric based on the comparison of neighbouring values within patterns in a time series. Our algorithm is based on comparing signal values on neighbouring nodes, using the adjacency matrix. We show that this generalisation preserves the properties of classical permutation for time series and the recent permutation entropy for images, and it can be applied to any graph structure with synthetic and real signals. We expect the present work to enable the extension of other nonlinear dynamic approaches to graph signals.

Initial energy deposition and initiation mechanism of nanosecond laser damage caused by KDP surface micro-defects

To enable an exploration of the initiation mechanism of nanosecond laser damage on a potassium dihydrogen phosphate (KDP) surface, a defect-assisted energy deposition model is developed that involves light intensity enhancement and a sub-band gap energy level structure. The simulations provide an explanation on why the laser-induced damage threshold (LIDT) of the KDP crystal is two orders of magnitude lower than the theoretical value. The model is verified by use of the transient images that appear during the laser damage. In addition, the dimensions of the "dangerous" surface defects that are the most sensitive to the laser damage are proposed. This work enables clarification on the initial energy deposition (IED) and initiation mechanism of the nanosecond laser damage caused by the KDP surface defects on micro-nano scale. It is helpful in understanding the laser-matter interactions and to improve the processing technique for high quality optical components.

TCLNet: Learning to Locate Typhoon Center Using Deep Neural Network

The task of typhoon center location plays an important role in typhoon intensity analysis and typhoon path prediction. Conventional typhoon center location algorithms mostly rely on digital image processing and mathematical morphology operation, which achieve limited performance. In this paper, we proposed an efficient fully convolutional end-to-end deep neural network named TCLNet to automatically locate the typhoon center position. We design the network structure carefully so that our TCLNet can achieve remarkable performance base on its lightweight architecture. In addition, we also present a brand new large-scale typhoon center location dataset (TCLD) so that the TCLNet can be trained in a supervised manner. Furthermore, we propose to use a novel TCL+ piecewise loss function to further improve the performance of TCLNet. Extensive experimental results and comparison demonstrate the performance of our model, and our TCLNet achieve a 14.4% increase in accuracy on the basis of a 92.7% reduction in parameters compared with SOTA deep learning based typhoon center location methods.

Generating the Cloud Motion Winds Field from Satellite Cloud Imagery Using Deep Learning Approach

Cloud motion winds (CMW) are routinely derived by tracking features in sequential geostationary satellite infrared cloud imagery. In this paper, we explore the cloud motion winds algorithm based on data-driven deep learning approach, and different from conventional hand-craft feature tracking and correlation matching algorithms, we use deep learning model to automatically learn the motion feature representations and directly output the field of cloud motion winds. In addition, we propose a novel large-scale cloud motion winds dataset (CMWD) for training deep learning models. We also try to use a single cloud imagery to predict the cloud motion winds field in a fixed region, which is impossible to achieve using traditional algorithms. The experimental results demonstrate that our algorithm can predict the cloud motion winds field efficiently, and even with a single cloud imagery as input.

Unsupervised Shadow Removal Using Target Consistency Generative Adversarial Network

Unsupervised shadow removal aims to learn a non-linear function to map the original image from shadow domain to non-shadow domain in the absence of paired shadow and non-shadow data. In this paper, we develop a simple yet efficient target-consistency generative adversarial network (TC-GAN) for the shadow removal task in the unsupervised manner. Compared with the bidirectional mapping in cycle-consistency GAN based methods for shadow removal, TC-GAN tries to learn a one-sided mapping to cast shadow images into shadow-free ones. With the proposed target-consistency constraint, the correlations between shadow images and the output shadow-free image are strictly confined. Extensive comparison experiments results show that TC-GAN outperforms the state-of-the-art unsupervised shadow removal methods by 14.9% in terms of FID and 31.5% in terms of KID. It is rather remarkable that TC-GAN achieves comparable performance with supervised shadow removal methods.

Application of light diffraction theory to qualify the downstream light field modulation property of mitigated KDP crystals

Micro-milling can effectively remove laser damage sites on a KDP (potassium dihydrogen phosphate) surface and then improve the laser damage resistance of the components. However, the repaired KDP surface could cause light propagating turbulence and downstream light intensification with the potential risk to damage downstream optics. In order to analyze the downstream light field modulation caused by Gaussian mitigation pits on KDP crystals, a computational model of the downstream light diffraction based on the angular spectrum theory and the Gaussian repair contour is established. The results show that the phase offset caused by the repaired surface produces a large light field modulation near the rear KDP surface. The modulation generated in the whole downstream light field is greater than that caused by the amplitude change. Therefore, the phase characteristics of the outgoing light could be suggested as a vital research topic for future research on the downstream light field modulation caused by mitigation contours. Significantly, the experimental results on the downstream light intensity distribution have good agreement with the simulation ones, which proves the validity of the established downstream light diffraction model. The phase characterization of the outgoing light is proposed as an evaluation tool in the repair of KDP crystals. The developed analytical method and numerical discrete algorithm could be also applicable in qualifying the repair quality of other optical components applied in high-power laser systems.

FORECAST-CLSTM: A New Convolutional LSTM Network for Cloudage Nowcasting

With the highly demand of large-scale and real-time weather service for public, a refinement of short-time cloudage prediction has become an essential part of the weather forecast productions. To provide a weather-service-compliant cloudage nowcasting, in this paper, we propose a novel hierarchical Convolutional Long-Short-Term Memory network based deep learning model, which we term as FORECAST-CLSTM, with a new Forecaster loss function to predict the future satellite cloud images. The model is designed to fuse multi-scale features in the hierarchical network structure to predict the pixel value and the morphological movement of the cloudage simultaneously. We also collect about 40K infrared satellite nephograms and create a large-scale Satellite Cloudage Map Dataset(SCMD). The proposed FORECAST-CLSTM model is shown to achieve better prediction performance compared with the state-of-the-art ConvLSTM model and the proposed Forecaster Loss Function is also demonstrated to retain the uncertainty of the real atmosphere condition better than conventional loss function.
