Impact of Acoustic Event Tagging on Scene Classification in a Multi-Task Learning Framework

Acoustic events are sounds with well-defined spectro-temporal characteristics which can be associated with the physical objects generating them. Acoustic scenes are collections of such acoustic events in no specific temporal order. Given this natural linkage between events and scenes, a common belief is that the ability to classify events must help in the classification of scenes. This has led to several efforts attempting to do well on Acoustic Event Tagging (AET) and Acoustic Scene Classification (ASC) using a multi-task network. However, in these efforts, improvement in one task does not guarantee an improvement in the other, suggesting a tension between ASC and AET. It is unclear if improvements in AET translates to improvements in ASC. We explore this conundrum through an extensive empirical study and show that under certain conditions, using AET as an auxiliary task in the multi-task network consistently improves ASC performance. Additionally, ASC performance further improves with the AET data-set size and is not sensitive to the choice of events or the number of events in the AET data-set. We conclude that this improvement in ASC performance comes from the regularization effect of using AET and not from the network's improved ability to discern between acoustic events.

RDU: A Region-based Approach to Form-style Document Understanding

Key Information Extraction (KIE) is aimed at extracting structured information (e.g. key-value pairs) from form-style documents (e.g. invoices), which makes an important step towards intelligent document understanding. Previous approaches generally tackle KIE by sequence tagging, which faces difficulty to process non-flatten sequences, especially for table-text mixed documents. These approaches also suffer from the trouble of pre-defining a fixed set of labels for each type of documents, as well as the label imbalance issue. In this work, we assume Optical Character Recognition (OCR) has been applied to input documents, and reformulate the KIE task as a region prediction problem in the two-dimensional (2D) space given a target field. Following this new setup, we develop a new KIE model named Region-based Document Understanding (RDU) that takes as input the text content and corresponding coordinates of a document, and tries to predict the result by localizing a bounding-box-like region. Our RDU first applies a layout-aware BERT equipped with a soft layout attention masking and bias mechanism to incorporate layout information into the representations. Then, a list of candidate regions is generated from the representations via a Region Proposal Module inspired by computer vision models widely applied for object detection. Finally, a Region Categorization Module and a Region Selection Module are adopted to judge whether a proposed region is valid and select the one with the largest probability from all proposed regions respectively. Experiments on four types of form-style documents show that our proposed method can achieve impressive results. In addition, our RDU model can be trained with different document types seamlessly, which is especially helpful over low-resource documents.

Optimal Gevrey stability of hydrostatic approximation for the Navier-Stokes equations in a thin domain

In this paper, we study the hydrostatic approximation for the Navier-Stokes system in a thin domain. When the convex initial data with Gevrey regularity of optimal index 3/2 in x variable and Sobolev regularity in y variable, we justify the limit from the anisotropic Navier-Stokes system to the hydrostatic Navier-Stokes/Prandtl system. Due to our method in the paper is independent of ε, by the same argument, we also get the hydrostatic Navier-Stokes/Prandtl system is well-posedness in the optimal Gevrey space. Our results improve the Gevrey index in [14, 34] whose Gevrey index is 9/8 .

Provably-secure quantum randomness expansion with uncharacterised homodyne detection

Quantum random number generators (QRNGs) are able to generate numbers that are certifiably random, even to an agent who holds some side-information. Such systems typically require that the elements being used are precisely calibrated and validly certified for a credible security analysis. However, this can be experimentally challenging and result in potential side-channels which could compromise the security of the QRNG. In this work, we propose, design and experimentally demonstrate a QRNG protocol that completely removes the calibration requirement for the measurement device. Moreover, our protocol is secure against quantum side-information. We also take into account the finite-size effects and remove the independent and identically distributed requirement for the measurement side. More importantly, our QRNG scheme features a simple implementation which uses only standard optical components and are readily implementable on integrated-photonic platforms. To validate the feasibility and practicability of the protocol, we set up a fibre-optical experimental system with a home-made homodyne detector with an effective efficiency of 91.7% at 1550nm. The system works at a rate of 2.5MHz, and obtains a net randomness expansion rate of 4.98kbits/s at 1E10 rounds. Our results pave the way for an integrated QRNG with self-testing feature and provable security.

Convolutions for Spatial Interaction Modeling

In many different fields interactions between objects play a critical role in determining their behavior. Graph neural networks (GNNs) have emerged as a powerful tool for modeling interactions, although often at the cost of adding considerable complexity and latency. In this paper, we consider the problem of spatial interaction modeling in the context of predicting the motion of actors around autonomous vehicles, and investigate alternatives to GNNs. We revisit 2D convolutions and show that they can demonstrate comparable performance to graph networks in modeling spatial interactions with lower latency, thus providing an effective and efficient alternative in time-critical systems. Moreover, we propose a novel interaction loss to further improve the interaction modeling of the considered methods.

Attacking and Defending Deep Reinforcement Learning Policies

Recent studies have shown that deep reinforcement learning (DRL) policies are vulnerable to adversarial attacks, which raise concerns about applications of DRL to safety-critical systems. In this work, we adopt a principled way and study the robustness of DRL policies to adversarial attacks from the perspective of robust optimization. Within the framework of robust optimization, optimal adversarial attacks are given by minimizing the expected return of the policy, and correspondingly a good defense mechanism should be realized by improving the worst-case performance of the policy. Considering that attackers generally have no access to the training environment, we propose a greedy attack algorithm, which tries to minimize the expected return of the policy without interacting with the environment, and a defense algorithm, which performs adversarial training in a max-min form. Experiments on Atari game environments show that our attack algorithm is more effective and leads to worse return of the policy than existing attack algorithms, and our defense algorithm yields policies more robust than existing defense methods to a range of adversarial attacks (including our proposed attack algorithm).

$B\to D \ell ν_\ell$ form factors beyond leading power and extraction of $|V_{cb}|$ and $R(D)$

We investigate the subleading-power corrections to the exclusive $B\to D \ell ν_\ell$ form factors at ${\cal O} (α_s^0)$ in the light-cone sum rules (LCSR) framework by including the two- and three-particle higher-twist contributions from the $B$-meson light-cone distribution amplitudes up to the twist-six accuracy, by taking into account the subleading terms in expanding the hard-collinear charm-quark propagator, and by evaluating the hadronic matrix element of the subleading effective current $\bar q \, γ_μ \, i \not\!\!{D}_\perp / (2 \, m_b) \, h_v$. Employing further the available leading-power results for the semileptonic $B \to D$ form factors at the next-to-leading-logarithmic level and combining our improved LCSR predictions with the recent lattice determinations, we then carry out a comprehensive phenomenological analysis on the semi-leptonic $B\to D \ell ν_\ell$ decay. We extract $|V_{cb}| = \big( 40.2^{+0.6}_{-0.5} {\big |_{\rm th}}\,\, {}^{+1.4}_{-1.4} {\big |_{\rm exp}} \big)\times 10^{-3}$ ($|V_{cb}| = \big( 40.9^{+0.6}_{-0.5} {\big |_{\rm th}}\,\, {}^{+1.0}_{-1.0} {\big |_{\rm exp}} \big)\times 10^{-3}$) using the BaBar (Belle) experimental data, and particularly obtain for the gold-plated ratio $R(D) = 0.302\pm 0.003$.

Physical layer security in large-scale random multiple access wireless sensor networks: a stochastic geometry approach

This paper investigates physical layer security for a large-scale WSN with random multiple access, where each fusion center in the network randomly schedules a number of sensors to upload their sensed data subject to the overhearing of randomly distributed eavesdroppers. We propose an uncoordinated random jamming scheme in which those unscheduled sensors send jamming signals with a certain probability to defeat the eavesdroppers. With the aid of stochastic geometry theory and order statistics, we derive analytical expressions for the connection outage probability and secrecy outage probability to characterize transmission reliability and secrecy, respectively. Based on the obtained analytical results, we formulate an optimization problem for maximizing the sum secrecy throughput subject to both reliability and secrecy constraints, considering a joint design of the wiretap code rates for each scheduled sensor and the jamming probability for the unscheduled sensors. We provide both optimal and low-complexity sub-optimal algorithms to tackle the above problem, and further reveal various properties on the optimal parameters which are useful to guide practical designs. In particular, we demonstrate that the proposed random jamming scheme is beneficial for improving the sum secrecy throughput, and the optimal jamming probability is the result of trade-off between secrecy and throughput. We also show that the throughput performance of the sub-optimal scheme approaches that of the optimal one when facing a stringent reliability constraint or a loose secrecy constraint.

Federated Self-Supervised Learning for Acoustic Event Classification

Standard acoustic event classification (AEC) solutions require large-scale collection of data from client devices for model optimization. Federated learning (FL) is a compelling framework that decouples data collection and model training to enhance customer privacy. In this work, we investigate the feasibility of applying FL to improve AEC performance while no customer data can be directly uploaded to the server. We assume no pseudo labels can be inferred from on-device user inputs, aligning with the typical use cases of AEC. We adapt self-supervised learning to the FL framework for on-device continual learning of representations, and it results in improved performance of the downstream AEC classifiers without labeled/pseudo-labeled data available. Compared to the baseline w/o FL, the proposed method improves precision up to 20.3\% relatively while maintaining the recall. Our work differs from prior work in FL in that our approach does not require user-generated learning targets, and the data we use is collected from our Beta program and is de-identified, to maximally simulate the production settings.

Rule Mining over Knowledge Graphs via Reinforcement Learning

Knowledge graphs (KGs) are an important source repository for a wide range of applications and rule mining from KGs recently attracts wide research interest in the KG-related research community. Many solutions have been proposed for the rule mining from large-scale KGs, which however are limited in the inefficiency of rule generation and ineffectiveness of rule evaluation. To solve these problems, in this paper we propose a generation-then-evaluation rule mining approach guided by reinforcement learning. Specifically, a two-phased framework is designed. The first phase aims to train a reinforcement learning agent for rule generation from KGs, and the second is to utilize the value function of the agent to guide the step-by-step rule generation. We conduct extensive experiments on several datasets and the results prove that our rule mining solution achieves state-of-the-art performance in terms of efficiency and effectiveness.

Enhanced Next-to-Leading-Order Corrections to Weak Annihilation $B$-Meson Decays

We accomplish the analytical computation of the pure weak annihilation non-leptonic $B$-meson decay amplitudes at leading power in the heavy quark expansion. The novel observation regarding such fundamental hadronic quantities is that adding the missing hard-collinear contribution on top of the hard gluon exchange effect eliminates rapidity divergences entering the convolution integrals of factorization formulae. Subsequently we identify the perturbative enhancement mechanism due to the penguin contractions of the current-current operators from the weak effective Hamiltonian, which yields the significant impacts on the CP violating observables.

A multi-domain VNE algorithm based on multi-objective optimization for IoD architecture in Industry 4.0

Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) has a broad application prospect in the future, especially in the Industry 4.0. The development of Internet of Drones (IoD) makes UAV operation more autonomous. Network virtualization technology is a promising technology to support IoD, so the allocation of virtual resources becomes a crucial issue in IoD. How to rationally allocate potential material resources has become an urgent problem to be solved. The main work of this paper is presented as follows: (1) In order to improve the optimization performance and reduce the computation time, we propose a multi-domain virtual network embedding algorithm (MP-VNE) adopting the centralized hierarchical multi-domain architecture. The proposed algorithm can avoid the local optimum through incorporating the genetic variation factor into the traditional particle swarm optimization process. (2) In order to simplify the multi-objective optimization problem, we transform the multi-objective problem into a single-objective problem through weighted summation method. The results prove that the proposed algorithm can rapidly converge to the optimal solution. (3) In order to reduce the mapping cost, we propose an algorithm for selecting candidate nodes based on the estimated mapping cost. Each physical domain calculates the estimated mapping cost of all nodes according to the formula of the estimated mapping cost, and chooses the node with the lowest estimated mapping cost as the candidate node. The simulation results show that the proposed MP-VNE algorithm has better performance than MC-VNM, LID-VNE and other algorithms in terms of delay, cost and comprehensive indicators.

VNE Solution for Network Differentiated QoS and Security Requirements: From the Perspective of Deep Reinforcement Learning

The rapid development and deployment of network services has brought a series of challenges to researchers. On the one hand, the needs of Internet end users/applications reflect the characteristics of travel alienation, and they pursue different perspectives of service quality. On the other hand, with the explosive growth of information in the era of big data, a lot of private information is stored in the network. End users/applications naturally start to pay attention to network security. In order to solve the requirements of differentiated quality of service (QoS) and security, this paper proposes a virtual network embedding (VNE) algorithm based on deep reinforcement learning (DRL), aiming at the CPU, bandwidth, delay and security attributes of substrate network. DRL agent is trained in the network environment constructed by the above attributes. The purpose is to deduce the mapping probability of each substrate node and map the virtual node according to this probability. Finally, the breadth first strategy (BFS) is used to map the virtual links. In the experimental stage, the algorithm based on DRL is compared with other representative algorithms in three aspects: long term average revenue, long term revenue consumption ratio and acceptance rate. The results show that the algorithm proposed in this paper has achieved good experimental results, which proves that the algorithm can be effectively applied to solve the end user/application differentiated QoS and security requirements.

Resource Management and Security Scheme of ICPSs and IoT Based on VNE Algorithm

The development of Intelligent Cyber-Physical Systems (ICPSs) in virtual network environment is facing severe challenges. On the one hand, the Internet of things (IoT) based on ICPSs construction needs a large amount of reasonable network resources support. On the other hand, ICPSs are facing severe network security problems. The integration of ICPSs and network virtualization (NV) can provide more efficient network resource support and security guarantees for IoT users. Based on the above two problems faced by ICPSs, we propose a virtual network embedded (VNE) algorithm with computing, storage resources and security constraints to ensure the rationality and security of resource allocation in ICPSs. In particular, we use reinforcement learning (RL) method as a means to improve algorithm performance. We extract the important attribute characteristics of underlying network as the training environment of RL agent. Agent can derive the optimal node embedding strategy through training, so as to meet the requirements of ICPSs for resource management and security. The embedding of virtual links is based on the breadth first search (BFS) strategy. Therefore, this is a comprehensive two-stage RL-VNE algorithm considering the constraints of computing, storage and security three-dimensional resources. Finally, we design a large number of simulation experiments from the perspective of typical indicators of VNE algorithms. The experimental results effectively illustrate the effectiveness of the algorithm in the application of ICPSs.

Multi Objective Resource Optimization of Wireless Network Based on Cross Domain Virtual Network Embedding

The rapid development of virtual network architecture makes it possible for wireless network to be widely used. With the popularity of artificial intelligence (AI) industry in daily life, efficient resource allocation of wireless network has become a problem. Especially when network users request wireless network resources from different management domains, they still face many practical problems. From the perspective of virtual network embedding (VNE), this paper designs and implements a multi-objective optimization VNE algorithm for wireless network resource allocation. Resource allocation in virtual network is essentially a problem of allocating underlying resources for virtual network requests (VNRs). According to the proposed objective formula, we consider the optimization mapping cost, network delay and VNR acceptance rate. VNE is completed by node mapping and link mapping. In the experiment and simulation stage, it is compared with other VNE algorithms, the cross domain VNE algorithm proposed in this paper is optimal in the above three indicators. This shows the effectiveness of the algorithm in wireless network resource allocation.

Dynamic Virtual Network Embedding Algorithm based on Graph Convolution Neural Network and Reinforcement Learning

Network virtualization (NV) is a technology with broad application prospects. Virtual network embedding (VNE) is the core orientation of VN, which aims to provide more flexible underlying physical resource allocation for user function requests. The classical VNE problem is usually solved by heuristic method, but this method often limits the flexibility of the algorithm and ignores the time limit. In addition, the partition autonomy of physical domain and the dynamic characteristics of virtual network request (VNR) also increase the difficulty of VNE. This paper proposed a new type of VNE algorithm, which applied reinforcement learning (RL) and graph neural network (GNN) theory to the algorithm, especially the combination of graph convolutional neural network (GCNN) and RL algorithm. Based on a self-defined fitness matrix and fitness value, we set up the objective function of the algorithm implementation, realized an efficient dynamic VNE algorithm, and effectively reduced the degree of resource fragmentation. Finally, we used comparison algorithms to evaluate the proposed method. Simulation experiments verified that the dynamic VNE algorithm based on RL and GCNN has good basic VNE characteristics. By changing the resource attributes of physical network and virtual network, it can be proved that the algorithm has good flexibility.

Incorporating Distributed DRL into Storage Resource Optimization of Space-Air-Ground Integrated Wireless Communication Network

Space-air-ground integrated network (SAGIN) is a new type of wireless network mode. The effective management of SAGIN resources is a prerequisite for high-reliability communication. However, the storage capacity of space-air network segment is extremely limited. The air servers also do not have sufficient storage resources to centrally accommodate the information uploaded by each edge server. So the problem of how to coordinate the storage resources of SAGIN has arisen. This paper proposes a SAGIN storage resource management algorithm based on distributed deep reinforcement learning (DRL). The resource management process is modeled as a Markov decision model. In each edge physical domain, we extract the network attributes represented by storage resources for the agent to build a training environment, so as to realize the distributed training. In addition, we propose a SAGIN resource management framework based on distributed DRL. Simulation results show that the agent has an ideal training effect. Compared with other algorithms, the resource allocation revenue and user request acceptance rate of the proposed algorithm are increased by about 18.15\% and 8.35\% respectively. Besides, the proposed algorithm has good flexibility in dealing with the changes of resource conditions.
