Channel Estimation for XL-IRS Assisted Wireless Systems with Double-sided Visibility Regions

In this paper, we study efficient channel estimation design for an extremely large-scale intelligent reflecting surface (XL-IRS) assisted multi-user communication systems, where both the base station (BS) and users are located in the near-field region of the XL-IRS. Two unique channel characteristics of XL-IRS are considered, namely, the near-field spherical wavefronts and double-sided visibility regions (VRs) at the BS and users, which render the channel estimation for XL-IRS highly challenging. To address this issue, we propose in this paper an efficient three-step XL-IRS channel estimation method. Specifically, in the first step, an anchor node is delicately deployed near the XL-IRS to estimate the cascaded BS-IRS-anchor channel. Then, an efficient VR detection method is devised to estimate the VR information between the BS and XL-IRS. In this way, only the channels from the visible XL-IRS elements to the BS are estimated, thereby reducing the dimension of the cascaded BS-IRS-users channels to be estimated. Third, by leveraging the common BS-IRS channel, the cascaded channels for all users are consecutively estimated accounting for the VRs of the IRS-user channels. Finally, numerical results are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed channel estimation scheme as compared to various benchmark schemes.

Movable Antenna Enabled Symbiotic Radio Systems: An Opportunity for Mutualism

In this letter, we propose a new movable antenna (MA) enabled symbiotic radio (SR) system that leverages the movement of MAs to maximize both the primary and secondary rates, thereby promoting their mutualism. Specifically, the primary transmitter (PT) equipped with MAs utilizes a maximum ratio transmission (MRT) beamforming scheme to ensure the highest primary rate at the primary user (PU). Concurrently, the backscatter device (BD) establishes the secondary transmission by overlaying onto the primary signal. The utilization of MAs aims to enhance the secondary rate by optimizing the positions of MAs to improve the beam gain at the BD. Accordingly, the beam gains for both MA and fixed-position antenna (FPA) scenarios are analyzed, confirming the effectiveness of the MA scheme in achieving the highest primary and secondary rates. Numerical results verity the superiority of our proposed MA enabled scheme.

A New Dataset and Framework for Real-World Blurred Images Super-Resolution

Recent Blind Image Super-Resolution (BSR) methods have shown proficiency in general images. However, we find that the efficacy of recent methods obviously diminishes when employed on image data with blur, while image data with intentional blur constitute a substantial proportion of general data. To further investigate and address this issue, we developed a new super-resolution dataset specifically tailored for blur images, named the Real-world Blur-kept Super-Resolution (ReBlurSR) dataset, which consists of nearly 3000 defocus and motion blur image samples with diverse blur sizes and varying blur intensities. Furthermore, we propose a new BSR framework for blur images called Perceptual-Blur-adaptive Super-Resolution (PBaSR), which comprises two main modules: the Cross Disentanglement Module (CDM) and the Cross Fusion Module (CFM). The CDM utilizes a dual-branch parallelism to isolate conflicting blur and general data during optimization. The CFM fuses the well-optimized prior from these distinct domains cost-effectively and efficiently based on model interpolation. By integrating these two modules, PBaSR achieves commendable performance on both general and blur data without any additional inference and deployment cost and is generalizable across multiple model architectures. Rich experiments show that PBaSR achieves state-of-the-art performance across various metrics without incurring extra inference costs. Within the widely adopted LPIPS metrics, PBaSR achieves an improvement range of approximately 0.02-0.10 with diverse anchor methods and blur types, across both the ReBlurSR and multiple common general BSR benchmarks. XPSR: Cross-modal Priors for Diffusion-based Image Super-Resolution

Diffusion-based methods, endowed with a formidable generative prior, have received increasing attention in Image Super-Resolution (ISR) recently. However, as low-resolution (LR) images often undergo severe degradation, it is challenging for ISR models to perceive the semantic and degradation information, resulting in restoration images with incorrect content or unrealistic artifacts. To address these issues, we propose a \textit{Cross-modal Priors for Super-Resolution (XPSR)} framework. Within XPSR, to acquire precise and comprehensive semantic conditions for the diffusion model, cutting-edge Multimodal Large Language Models (MLLMs) are utilized. To facilitate better fusion of cross-modal priors, a \textit{Semantic-Fusion Attention} is raised. To distill semantic-preserved information instead of undesired degradations, a \textit{Degradation-Free Constraint} is attached between LR and its high-resolution (HR) counterpart. Quantitative and qualitative results show that XPSR is capable of generating high-fidelity and high-realism images across synthetic and real-world datasets. Codes are released at \url{https://github.com/qyp2000/XPSR}.

$L_p$-norm Distortion-Efficient Adversarial Attack

Adversarial examples have shown a powerful ability to make a well-trained model misclassified. Current mainstream adversarial attack methods only consider one of the distortions among $L_0$-norm, $L_2$-norm, and $L_\infty$-norm. $L_0$-norm based methods cause large modification on a single pixel, resulting in naked-eye visible detection, while $L_2$-norm and $L_\infty$-norm based methods suffer from weak robustness against adversarial defense since they always diffuse tiny perturbations to all pixels. A more realistic adversarial perturbation should be sparse and imperceptible. In this paper, we propose a novel $L_p$-norm distortion-efficient adversarial attack, which not only owns the least $L_2$-norm loss but also significantly reduces the $L_0$-norm distortion. To this aim, we design a new optimization scheme, which first optimizes an initial adversarial perturbation under $L_2$-norm constraint, and then constructs a dimension unimportance matrix for the initial perturbation. Such a dimension unimportance matrix can indicate the adversarial unimportance of each dimension of the initial perturbation. Furthermore, we introduce a new concept of adversarial threshold for the dimension unimportance matrix. The dimensions of the initial perturbation whose unimportance is higher than the threshold will be all set to zero, greatly decreasing the $L_0$-norm distortion. Experimental results on three benchmark datasets show that under the same query budget, the adversarial examples generated by our method have lower $L_0$-norm and $L_2$-norm distortion than the state-of-the-art. Especially for the MNIST dataset, our attack reduces 8.1$\%$ $L_2$-norm distortion meanwhile remaining 47$\%$ pixels unattacked. This demonstrates the superiority of the proposed method over its competitors in terms of adversarial robustness and visual imperceptibility.

Query-Efficient Hard-Label Black-Box Attack against Vision Transformers

Recent studies have revealed that vision transformers (ViTs) face similar security risks from adversarial attacks as deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs). However, directly applying attack methodology on CNNs to ViTs has been demonstrated to be ineffective since the ViTs typically work on patch-wise encoding. This article explores the vulnerability of ViTs against adversarial attacks under a black-box scenario, and proposes a novel query-efficient hard-label adversarial attack method called AdvViT. Specifically, considering that ViTs are highly sensitive to patch modification, we propose to optimize the adversarial perturbation on the individual patches. To reduce the dimension of perturbation search space, we modify only a handful of low-frequency components of each patch. Moreover, we design a weight mask matrix for all patches to further optimize the perturbation on different regions of a whole image. We test six mainstream ViT backbones on the ImageNet-1k dataset. Experimental results show that compared with the state-of-the-art attacks on CNNs, our AdvViT achieves much lower $L_2$-norm distortion under the same query budget, sufficiently validating the vulnerability of ViTs against adversarial attacks.

STAL3D: Unsupervised Domain Adaptation for 3D Object Detection via Collaborating Self-Training and Adversarial Learning

Existing 3D object detection suffers from expensive annotation costs and poor transferability to unknown data due to the domain gap, Unsupervised Domain Adaptation (UDA) aims to generalize detection models trained in labeled source domains to perform robustly on unexplored target domains, providing a promising solution for cross-domain 3D object detection. Although Self-Training (ST) based cross-domain 3D detection methods with the assistance of pseudo-labeling techniques have achieved remarkable progress, they still face the issue of low-quality pseudo-labels when there are significant domain disparities due to the absence of a process for feature distribution alignment. While Adversarial Learning (AL) based methods can effectively align the feature distributions of the source and target domains, the inability to obtain labels in the target domain forces the adoption of asymmetric optimization losses, resulting in a challenging issue of source domain bias. To overcome these limitations, we propose a novel unsupervised domain adaptation framework for 3D object detection via collaborating ST and AL, dubbed as STAL3D, unleashing the complementary advantages of pseudo labels and feature distribution alignment. Additionally, a Background Suppression Adversarial Learning (BS-AL) module and a Scale Filtering Module (SFM) are designed tailored for 3D cross-domain scenes, effectively alleviating the issues of the large proportion of background interference and source domain size bias. Our STAL3D achieves state-of-the-art performance on multiple cross-domain tasks and even surpasses the Oracle results on Waymo $\rightarrow$ KITTI and Waymo $\rightarrow$ KITTI-rain.

Chiral π Domain Walls Composed of Twin Half-Integer Surface Disclinations in Ferroelectric Nematic Liquid Crystals

Ferroelectric nematic liquid crystals are polar fluids characterized by microscopic orientational ordering and macroscopic spontaneous polarizations. Within these fluids, walls that separate domains of different polarizations are ubiquitous. We demonstrate that the π walls in films of polar fluids consist of twin half-integer surface disclinations spaced horizontally, enclosing a subdomain where the polarization exhibits left- or right-handed π twists across the film. The degenerate geometric configurations of these twin disclinations give rise to kinks and antikinks, effectively partitioning subdomains of opposite chirality like Ising chains. The hierarchical topological structures dictate that field-driven polar switching entails a two-step annihilation process of the disclinations. These findings serve as a cornerstone for comprehending other walls in ferroelectric and ferromagnetic materials, thereby laying the base for domain engineering crucial for advancing their nonlinear and optoelectronic applications.

Energy-storing analysis and fishtail stiffness optimization for a wire-driven elastic robotic fish

The robotic fish with high propulsion efficiency and good maneuverability achieves underwater fishlike propulsion by commonly adopting the motor to drive the fishtail, causing the significant fluctuations of the motor power due to the uneven swing speed of the fishtail in one swing cycle. Hence, we propose a wire-driven robotic fish with a spring-steel-based active-segment elastic spine. This bionic spine can produce elastic deformation to store energy under the action of the wire driving and motor for responding to the fluctuations of the motor power. Further, we analyze the effects of the energy-storing of the active-segment elastic spine on the smoothness of motor power. Based on the developed Lagrangian dynamic model and cantilever beam model, the power-variance-based nonlinear optimization model for the stiffness of the active-segment elastic spine is established to respond to the sharp fluctuations of motor power during each fishtail swing cycle. Results validate that the energy-storing of the active-segment elastic spine plays a vital role in improving the power fluctuations and maximum frequency of the motor by adjusting its stiffness reasonably, which is beneficial to achieving high propulsion and high speed for robotic fish. Compared with the active-segment rigid spine that is incapable of storing energy, the energy-storing of the active-segment elastic spine is beneficial to increase the maximum frequency of the motor and the average thrust of the fishtail by 0.41 Hz, and 0.06 N, respectively.

PTM-VQA: Efficient Video Quality Assessment Leveraging Diverse PreTrained Models from the Wild

Video quality assessment (VQA) is a challenging problem due to the numerous factors that can affect the perceptual quality of a video, \eg, content attractiveness, distortion type, motion pattern, and level. However, annotating the Mean opinion score (MOS) for videos is expensive and time-consuming, which limits the scale of VQA datasets, and poses a significant obstacle for deep learning-based methods. In this paper, we propose a VQA method named PTM-VQA, which leverages PreTrained Models to transfer knowledge from models pretrained on various pre-tasks, enabling benefits for VQA from different aspects. Specifically, we extract features of videos from different pretrained models with frozen weights and integrate them to generate representation. Since these models possess various fields of knowledge and are often trained with labels irrelevant to quality, we propose an Intra-Consistency and Inter-Divisibility (ICID) loss to impose constraints on features extracted by multiple pretrained models. The intra-consistency constraint ensures that features extracted by different pretrained models are in the same unified quality-aware latent space, while the inter-divisibility introduces pseudo clusters based on the annotation of samples and tries to separate features of samples from different clusters. Furthermore, with a constantly growing number of pretrained models, it is crucial to determine which models to use and how to use them. To address this problem, we propose an efficient scheme to select suitable candidates. Models with better clustering performance on VQA datasets are chosen to be our candidates. Extensive experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Simple, High Saturation Power, Quantum-limited, RF SQUID Array-based Josephson Parametric Amplifiers

High-fidelity quantum non-demolition qubit measurement is critical to error correction and rapid qubit feedback in large-scale quantum computing. High-fidelity readout requires passing a short and strong pulse through the qubit's readout resonator, which is then processed by a sufficiently high bandwidth, high saturation power, and quantum-limited amplifier. We have developed a design pipeline that combines time-domain simulation of the un-truncated device Hamiltonian, fabrication constraints, and maximization of saturation power. We have realized an amplifier based on a modified NIST tri-layer Nb fabrication suite which utilizes an array of 25 radio frequency Superconducting QUantum Interference Devices (rf SQUIDs) embedded within a low-Q resonator powered by a high-power voltage pump delivered via a diplexer on the signal port. We show that, despite the intensity of the pump, the device is quantum-efficient and capable of high-fidelity measurement limited by state transitions in the transmon. We present experimental data demonstrating up to -91.2 dBm input saturation power with 20 dB gain, up to 28 MHz instantaneous bandwidth, and phase-preserving qubit measurements with 62% quantum efficiency.

Are We in The Zone? Exploring The Features and Method of Detecting Simultaneous Flow Experiences Based on EEG Signals

When executing interdependent personal tasks for the team's purpose, simultaneous individual flow(simultaneous flow) is the antecedent condition of achieving shared team flow. Detecting simultaneous flow helps better understanding the status of team members, which is thus important for optimizing multi-user interaction systems. However, there is currently a lack exploration on objective features and methods for detecting simultaneous flow. Based on brain mechanism of flow in teamwork and previous studies on electroencephalogram (EEG)-based individual flow detection, this study aims to explore the significant EEG features related to simultaneous flow, as well as effective detection methods based on EEG signals. First, a two-player simultaneous flow task is designed, based on which we construct the first multi-EEG signals dataset of simultaneous flow. Then, we explore the potential EEG signal features that may be related to individual and simultaneous flow and validate their effectiveness in simultaneous flow detection with various machine learning models. The results show that 1) the inter-brain synchrony features are relevant to simultaneous flow due to enhancing the models' performance in detecting different types of simultaneous flow; 2) the features from the frontal lobe area seem to be given priority attention when detecting simultaneous flows; 3) Random Forests performed best in binary classification while Neural Network and Deep Neural Network3 performed best in ternary classification.

Port Forwarding Services Are Forwarding Security Risks

We conduct the first comprehensive security study on representative port forwarding services (PFS), which emerge in recent years and make the web services deployed in internal networks available on the Internet along with better usability but less complexity compared to traditional techniques (e.g., NAT traversal techniques). Our study is made possible through a set of novel methodologies, which are designed to uncover the technical mechanisms of PFS, experiment attack scenarios for PFS protocols, automatically discover and snapshot port-forwarded websites (PFWs) at scale, and classify PFWs into well-observed categories. Leveraging these methodologies, we have observed the widespread adoption of PFS with millions of PFWs distributed across tens of thousands of ISPs worldwide. Furthermore, 32.31% PFWs have been classified into website categories that serve access to critical data or infrastructure, such as, web consoles for industrial control systems, IoT controllers, code repositories, and office automation systems. And 18.57% PFWs didn't enforce any access control for external visitors. Also identified are two types of attacks inherent in the protocols of Oray (one well-adopted PFS provider), and the notable abuse of PFSes by malicious actors in activities such as malware distribution, botnet operation and phishing.

CasSR: Activating Image Power for Real-World Image Super-Resolution

The objective of image super-resolution is to generate clean and high-resolution images from degraded versions. Recent advancements in diffusion modeling have led to the emergence of various image super-resolution techniques that leverage pretrained text-to-image (T2I) models. Nevertheless, due to the prevalent severe degradation in low-resolution images and the inherent characteristics of diffusion models, achieving high-fidelity image restoration remains challenging. Existing methods often exhibit issues including semantic loss, artifacts, and the introduction of spurious content not present in the original image. To tackle this challenge, we propose Cascaded diffusion for Super-Resolution, CasSR , a novel method designed to produce highly detailed and realistic images. In particular, we develop a cascaded controllable diffusion model that aims to optimize the extraction of information from low-resolution images. This model generates a preliminary reference image to facilitate initial information extraction and degradation mitigation. Furthermore, we propose a multi-attention mechanism to enhance the T2I model's capability in maximizing the restoration of the original image content. Through a comprehensive blend of qualitative and quantitative analyses, we substantiate the efficacy and superiority of our approach.

Enhanced polarization switching characteristics of HfO2 ultrathin films via acceptor-donor co-doping

In the realm of ferroelectric memories, HfO2-based ferroelectrics stand out because of their exceptional CMOS compatibility and scalability. Nevertheless, their switchable polarization and switching speed are not on par with those of perovskite ferroelectrics. It is widely acknowledged that defects play a crucial role in stabilizing the metastable polar phase of HfO2. Simultaneously, defects also pin the domain walls and impede the switching process, ultimately rendering the sluggish switching of HfO2. Herein, we present an effective strategy involving acceptor-donor co-doping to effectively tackle this dilemma. Remarkably enhanced ferroelectricity and the fastest switching process ever reported among HfO2 polar devices are observed in La3+-Ta5+ co-doped HfO2 ultrathin films. Moreover, robust macro-electrical characteristics of co-doped films persist even at a thickness as low as 3 nm, expanding potential applications of HfO2 in ultrathin devices. Our systematic investigations further demonstrate that synergistic effects of uniform microstructure and smaller switching barrier introduced by co-doping ensure the enhanced ferroelectricity and shortened switching time. The co-doping strategy offers an effective avenue to control the defect state and improve the ferroelectric properties of HfO2 films.

Forecasting Volatility with Machine Learning and Rough Volatility: Example from the Crypto-Winter

We extend the application and test the performance of a recently introduced volatility prediction framework encompassing LSTM and rough volatility. Our asset class of interest is cryptocurrencies, at the beginning of the "crypto-winter" in 2022. We first show that to forecast volatility, a universal LSTM approach trained on a pool of assets outperforms traditional models. We then consider a parsimonious parametric model based on rough volatility and Zumbach effect. We obtain similar prediction performances with only five parameters whose values are non-asset-dependent. Our findings provide further evidence on the universality of the mechanisms underlying the volatility formation process.

KVQ: Kwai Video Quality Assessment for Short-form Videos

Short-form UGC video platforms, like Kwai and TikTok, have been an emerging and irreplaceable mainstream media form, thriving on user-friendly engagement, and kaleidoscope creation, etc. However, the advancing content-generation modes, e.g., special effects, and sophisticated processing workflows, e.g., de-artifacts, have introduced significant challenges to recent UGC video quality assessment: (i) the ambiguous contents hinder the identification of quality-determined regions. (ii) the diverse and complicated hybrid distortions are hard to distinguish. To tackle the above challenges and assist in the development of short-form videos, we establish the first large-scale Kaleidoscope short Video database for Quality assessment, termed KVQ, which comprises 600 user-uploaded short videos and 3600 processed videos through the diverse practical processing workflows, including pre-processing, transcoding, and enhancement. Among them, the absolute quality score of each video and partial ranking score among indistinguishable samples are provided by a team of professional researchers specializing in image processing. Based on this database, we propose the first short-form video quality evaluator, i.e., KSVQE, which enables the quality evaluator to identify the quality-determined semantics with the content understanding of large vision language models (i.e., CLIP) and distinguish the distortions with the distortion understanding module. Experimental results have shown the effectiveness of KSVQE on our KVQ database and popular VQA databases.
