Layer construction of 3D topological states and string braiding statistics

While the topological order in two dimensions has been studied extensively since the discover of the integer and fractional quantum Hall systems, topological states in 3 spatial dimensions are much less understood. In this paper, we propose a general formalism for constructing a large class of three-dimensional topological states by stacking layers of 2D topological states and introducing coupling between them. Using this construction, different types of topological states can be obtained, including those with only surface topological order and no bulk topological quasiparticles, and those with topological order both in the bulk and at the surface. For both classes of states we study its generic properties and present several explicit examples. As an interesting consequence of this construction, we obtain example systems with nontrivial braiding statistics between string excitations. In addition to studying the string-string braiding in the example system, we propose a generic topological field theory description which can capture both string-particle and string-string braiding statistics. Lastly, we provide a proof of a general identity for Abelian string statistics, and discuss an example system with non-Abelian strings.

Crystal-symmetry preserving Wannier states for fractional chern insulators

Recently, many numerical evidences of fractional Chern insulator, i.e. the fractional quantum Hall states on lattices, are proposed when a Chern band is partially filled. Some trial wavefunctions of fractional Chern insulators can be obtained by mapping the fractional quantum Hall wavefunctions defined in the continuum onto the lattice through the Wannier state representation (Phys. Rev. Lett. 107, 126803 (2011)) in which the single particle Landau orbits in the Landau levels are identified with the one dimensional Wannier states of the Chern bands with Chern number C = 1. However, this mapping generically breaks the lattice point group symmetry. In this paper, we discuss a general approach of modifying the mapping to accommodate the lattice rotational symmetry. The wavefunctions constructed through this modified mapping should serve as better trial wavefunctions to compare with the numerics and also as the basis for construction of lattice symmetry preserving pseudo-potential formalism for fractional Chern insulators. The focus of this paper shall be mainly on the $C_4$ rotational symmetry of square lattices. Similar analysis can be straightforwardly generalized to triangular or hexagonal lattices with $C_6$ symmetry. We also generalize the discussion to the lattice symmetry of fractional Chern insulators with high Chern number bands.

Theory of defects in Abelian topological states

The structure of extrinsic defects in topologically ordered states of matter is host to a rich set of universal physics. Extrinsic defects in 2+1 dimensional topological states include line-like defects, such as boundaries between topologically distinct states, and point-like defects, such as junctions between different line defects. Gapped boundaries in particular can themselves be \it topologically \rm distinct, and the junctions between them can localize topologically protected zero modes, giving rise to topological ground state degeneracies and projective non-Abelian statistics. In this paper, we develop a general theory of point defects and gapped line defects in 2+1 dimensional Abelian topological states. We derive a classification of topologically distinct gapped boundaries in terms of certain maximal subgroups of quasiparticles with mutually bosonic statistics, called Lagrangian subgroups. The junctions between different gapped boundaries provide a general classification of point defects in topological states, including as a special case the twist defects considered in previous works. We derive a general formula for the quantum dimension of these point defects, a general understanding of their localized "parafermion" zero modes, and we define a notion of projective non-Abelian statistics for them. The critical phenomena between topologically distinct gapped boundaries can be understood in terms of a general class of quantum spin chains or, equivalently, "generalized parafermion" chains. This provides a way of realizing exotic 1+1D generalized parafermion conformal field theories in condensed matter systems.

Classification of Topological Defects in Abelian Topological States

In this paper we propose the most general classification of point-like and line-like extrinsic topological defects in (2+1)-dimensional Abelian topological states. We first map generic extrinsic defects to boundary defects, and then provide a classification of the latter. Based on this classification, the most generic point defects can be understood as domain walls between topologically distinct boundary regions. We show that topologically distinct boundaries can themselves be classified by certain maximal subgroups of mutually bosonic quasiparticles, called Lagrangian subgroups. We study the topological properties of the point defects, including their quantum dimension, localized zero modes, and projective braiding statistics.

Momentum-space instantons and maximally localized flat-band topological Hamiltonians

Recently, two-dimensional band insulators with a topologically nontrivial (almost) flat band has been studied extensively, which can realize integer and fractional quantum Hall effect in a system without an orbital magnetic field. Realizing a topological flat band generally requires longer range hoppings in a lattice Hamiltonian. It is natural to ask what is the minimal hopping range required.% for a topological flat-band Hamiltonian. In this paper, we prove that the mean hopping range of the flat-band Hamiltonian with Chern number $C_1$ and total number of bands $N$ has a universal lower bound of $\sqrt{4|C_1|/πN}$. Furthermore, for the Hamiltonians that reach this lower bound, the Bloch wavefunctions of the topological flat band are instanton solutions of a $CP(N-1)$ non-linear $σ$ model on the Brillouin zone torus, which are elliptic functions up to a normalization factor.

Genons, twist defects, and projective non-Abelian braiding statistics

It has recently been realized that a general class of non-abelian defects can be created in conventional topological states by introducing extrinsic defects, such as lattice dislocations or superconductor-ferromagnet domain walls in conventional quantum Hall states or topological insulators. In this paper, we begin by placing these defects within the broader conceptual scheme of extrinsic twist defects associated with symmetries of the topological state. We explicitly study several classes of examples, including $Z_2$ and $Z_3$ twist defects, where the topological state with N twist defects can be mapped to a topological state without twist defects on a genus $g \propto N$ surface. To emphasize this connection we refer to the twist defects as genons. We develop methods to compute the projective non-abelian braiding statistics of the genons, and we find the braiding is given by adiabatic modular transformations, or Dehn twists, of the topological state on the effective genus g surface. We study the relation between this projective braiding statistics and the ordinary non-abelian braiding statistics obtained when the genons become deconfined, finite-energy excitations. We find that the braiding is generally different, in contrast to the Majorana case, which opens the possibility for fundamentally novel behavior. We find situations where the genons have quantum dimension 2 and can be used for universal topological quantum computing (TQC), while the host topological state is by itself non-universal for TQC.

Synthetic Topological Degeneracy by Anyon Condensation

Topological degeneracy is the degeneracy of the ground states in a many-body system in the large-system-size limit. Topological degeneracy cannot be lifted by any local perturbation of the Hamiltonian. The topological degeneracies on closed manifolds have been used to discover/define topological order in many-body systems, which contain excitations with fractional statistics. In this paper, we study a new type of topological degeneracy induced by condensing anyons along a line in 2D topological ordered states. Such topological degeneracy can be viewed as carried by each end of the line-defect, which is a generalization of Majorana zero-modes. The topological degeneracy can be used as a quantum memory. The ends of line-defects carry projective non-Abelian statistics, and braiding them allow us to perform fault tolerant quantum computations.

Paired Superfluidity and Fractionalized Vortices in Spin-orbit Coupled Bosons

In this letter we study finite temperature properties of spin-1/2 interacting bosons with spin-orbit coupling in two dimensions. When the ground state has stripe order, we show that thermal fluctuations will first melt the stripe order and lead to a superfluid of boson pairs if the spin-orbit coupling is isotropic or nearly isotropic. Such a phase supports fractionalized quantum vortices. The Kosterlize-Thouless transition from superfluid to normal state is driven by proliferation of half vortices. When the ground state is a plane wave state, the transition to normal state is driven by conventional Kosterlize-Thouless transition. However, the critical temperature will drop to zero for isotropic spin-orbit coupling.

Degeneracy of Many-body Quantum States in an Optical Lattice with a Uniform Magnetic Field

We prove a theorem that shows the degeneracy of many-body states depends on total particle number and flux filling ratio, for particles in a periodic lattice and under a uniform magnetic field. Non-interacting fermions and weakly interacting bosons are given as two examples. For the later case, this phenomena can also be understood in terms of destructive quantum interferences of multiple symmetry related tunneling paths between classical energy minima, which is reminiscent of the spin-parity effect discovered in magnetic molecular cluster. We also show that the quantum ground state of a mesoscopic number of bosons in this system is not a simple mean-field state but a fragmented state even for very weak interactions.

Spin-Orbit Coupled Spinor Bose-Einstein Condensates

An effective spin-orbit coupling can be generated in cold atom system by engineering atom-light interactions. In this letter we study spin-1/2 and spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensates with Rashba spin-orbit coupling, and find that the condensate wave function will develop non-trivial structures. From numerical simulation we have identified two different phases. In one phase the ground state is a single plane wave, and often we find the system splits into domains and an array of vortices plays the role as domain wall. In this phase, time-reversal symmetry is broken. In the other phase the condensate wave function is a standing wave and it forms spin stripe. The transition between them is driven by interactions between bosons. We also provide an analytical understanding of these results and determines the transition point between the two phases.
