SCMA Inspired Sparse Vector Coding: An Enhanced URLLC Transmission Scheme

Sparsity is inherently exploited in sparse code multiple access (SCMA) and sparse vector coding (SVC), yet the interaction between these two has not been explored before. It is intriguing to ask if one can be used to improve the other, and vice versa. In this work, we present a novel SCMA inspired SVC scheme, called SCMA-SVC, for enhanced ultra-reliable low-latency communications. Our key idea is to exploit the sparse pattern and multidimensional constellation nature of SCMA, with which one is able to further enlarge the minimum Euclidean distance (MED) of the corresponding SVC codebooks. Such an innovation allows us to harvest the multiuser coding gain and the constellation shaping gain which are pertinent to SCMA. Moreover, by applying random phase rotations to the sparse vectors, it is shown that the proposed SCMA-SVC achieves full diversity order over Rayleigh fading channels. Under maximum likelihood (ML) decoding, the proposed SCMA-SVC demonstrates remarkable error rate performances over both Gaussian and Rayleigh fading channels. Additionally, we develop a low-complexity decoder that exploits the structural sparsity of SCMA-SVC while maintaining near-ML performance. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed SCMA-SVC achieves significantly improved reliability over the existing SVC variants.

Non-thermal Atmospheric Pressure Plasma Combined with Benzoyl Peroxide to Enhance the Inhibition of Bacteria

This study aims to verify whether combining non-thermal equilibrium atmospheric pressure plasma with benzoyl peroxide (BPO) can enhance the inhibition of bacteria. This work involves not only adjusting the parameters of the plasma device, such as increasing the power supply voltage, modifying the working gas flow rate, as well as incorporating a specific proportion of oxygen to the working gas, but also aims to combine plasma with BPO to inactivate bacteria. An optical emission spectroscopy was utilized to determine the optimal working gas flow rate and oxygen mixing ratio for the experimental setup. Additionally, surface temperature and ultraviolet (UV) emission measurements were also performed to characterize the physical properties of the plasma treatment. Although the precise chemical mechanisms between plasma and BPO have yet to be fully elucidated, bacterial inactivation experiments on Escherichia coli demonstrated that the addition of BPO indeed enhanced the sterilization efficacy of plasma treatment.

Rise Time Effects of a Portable Inductive Energy Storage Pulse Generator on NO Production in Spark Discharges

This study investigates pulse waveform adjustment in a portable inductive energy storage (IES) pulsed power system and its effect on nitric oxide (NO) generation in atmospheric spark discharges. While previous studies have focused on pulse energy, pulse width, and repetition rate, the role of rise time remains insufficiently explored. Existing pulse generators with adjustable rise time are also bulky and unsuitable for portable applications. To address these limitations, this study examines rise time control strategies within a compact IES architecture and employs a parallel high-voltage capacitor to generate adjustable waveforms. Optical emission spectroscopy was used to measure excited N2 and NO gamma emissions, and a NO analyzer was used to monitor NO concentration. In addition, electron excitation temperature, plasma-absorbed power, and rotational temperature were estimated to clarify the influence of waveform characteristics on plasma chemistry. The results show that although rise time can be adjusted, it is coupled with pulse width and input energy in the system. Comparative analysis of spectral intensities, NO concentration, electron excitation temperature, and absorbed energy indicates that NO production depends primarily on energy input rather than rise time. Electrode temperature varies only minimally under different waveform conditions, suggesting that NO formation is mainly influenced by electron impact and ionization processes. This work proposes a portable and simplified IES-based high-voltage pulsed power generator, identifies the constraints associated with rise time control, and demonstrates the feasibility of waveform adjustment. The findings clarify the dominant mechanisms governing NO generation and provide a reference for the design of future portable plasma-based NO production systems.

Set Size Bound for Aperiodic Z-Complementary Sets

The widely and commonly adopted upper bound on the set size of aperiodic Z-complementary sets (ZCSs) in the literature has been a conjecture. In this letter, we provide detailed derivations for this conjectured bound. A ZCS is optimal when its set size reaches the upper bound. Furthermore, we propose a new construction of ZCSs based on extended generalized Boolean functions (EGBFs). The proposed method introduces optimal ZCSs with new parameters.

Sparse Zero Correlation Zone Arrays for Training Design in Spatial Modulation Systems

This paper presents a novel training matrix design for spatial modulation (SM) systems, by introducing a new class of two-dimensional (2D) arrays called sparse zero correlation zone (SZCZ) arrays. An SZCZ array is characterized by a majority of zero entries and exhibits the zero periodic auto- and cross-correlation zone properties across any two rows. With these unique properties, we show that SZCZ arrays can be effectively used as training matrices for SM systems. Additionally, direct constructions of SZCZ arrays with large ZCZ widths and controllable sparsity levels based on 2D restricted generalized Boolean functions (RGBFs) are proposed. Compared with existing training schemes, the proposed SZCZ-based training matrices have larger ZCZ widths, thereby offering greater tolerance for delay spread in multipath channels. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed SZCZ-based training design exhibits superior channel estimation performance over frequency-selective fading channels compared to existing alternatives.

Enhanced Cross Z-Complementary Set and Its Application in Generalized Spatial Modulation

Generalized spatial modulation (GSM) is a novel multiple-antenna technique offering flexibility among spectral efficiency, energy efficiency, and the cost of RF chains. In this paper, a novel class of sequence sets, called enhanced cross Zcomplementary set (E-CZCS), is proposed for efficient training sequence design in broadband GSM systems. Specifically, an E-CZCS consists of multiple CZCSs possessing front-end and tail-end zero-correlation zones (ZCZs), whereby any two distinct CZCSs have a tail-end ZCZ when a novel type of cross-channel aperiodic correlation sums is considered. The theoretical upper bound on the ZCZ width is first derived, upon which optimal E-CZCSs with flexible parameters are constructed. For optimal channel estimation over frequency-selective channels, we introduce and evaluate a novel GSM training framework employing the proposed E-CZCSs.

Sparse Complementary Pairs with Additional Aperiodic ZCZ Property

This paper presents a novel class of complex-valued sparse complementary pairs (SCPs), each consisting of a number of zero values and with additional zero-correlation zone (ZCZ) property for the aperiodic autocorrelations and crosscorrelations of the two constituent sequences. Direct constructions of SCPs and their mutually-orthogonal mates based on restricted generalized Boolean functions are proposed. It is shown that such SCPs exist with arbitrary lengths and controllable sparsity levels, making them a disruptive sequence candidate for modern low-complexity, low-latency, and low-storage signal processing applications.

Two-Dimensional Golay Complementary Array Sets With Arbitrary Lengths for Omnidirectional MIMO Transmission

This paper presents a coding approach for achieving omnidirectional transmission of certain common signals in massive multi-input multi-output (MIMO) networks such that the received power at any direction in a cell remains constant for any given distance. Specifically, two-dimensional (2D) Golay complementary array set (GCAS) can be used to design optimal massive MIMO precoding matrix so as to achieve omnidirectional transmission due to its complementary autocorrelation property. In this paper, novel constructions of new 2D GCASs with arbitrary array lengths are proposed. Our key idea is to carefully truncate the columns of certain larger arrays generated by 2D generalized Boolean functions. Finally, the power radiation patterns and numerical results are provided to verify the omnidirectional property of the GCAS-based precoding. The error performances of the proposed precoding scheme are presented to validate its superiority over the existing alternatives.

Designing Two-Dimensional Complete Complementary Codes for Omnidirectional Transmission in Massive MIMO Systems

This paper presents an efficient construction of two-dimensional (2D) complete complementary codes (CCCs) for their modern application as omnidirectional precoding matrices in massive MIMO systems to attain enhanced cell coverage. Unlike the traditional 1D CCCs, little progress has been made on efficient and systematic constructions of the 2D counterpart. In contrast to the existing recursive constructions with the aid of various sequence operations, certain 1D seed sequences or 2D arrays, we propose to use 2D generalized Boolean functions for direct synthesis of 2D CCCs. Simulation results show that the proposed 2D CCCs appear to be good candidates for precoding matrices to achieve omnidirectional transmission in massive MIMO systems.

GSG: A Granary Soft Gripper with Mechanical Force Sensing via 3-Dimensional Snap-Through Structure

Grasping is an essential capability for most robots in practical applications. Soft robotic grippers are considered as a critical part of robotic grasping and have attracted considerable attention in terms of the advantages of the high compliance and robustness to variance in object geometry; however, they are still limited by the corresponding sensing capabilities and actuation mechanisms. We propose a novel soft gripper that looks like a granary with a compliant snap-through bistable mechanism fabricated by integrated mold technology, achieving sensing and actuation purely mechanically. In particular, the snap-through bistable structure in the proposed gripper allows us to reduce the complexity of the mechanism, control, sensing designs since the grasping and sensing behaviors are completely passive. The grasping behaviors are automatically motivated once the trigger position of the gripper touches an object and applies sufficient force. To grasp objects with various profiles, the proposed granary soft gripper (GSG) is designed to be capable of enveloping, pinching and caging grasps. The gripper consists of a chamber palm, a palm cap and three fingers. First, the design of the gripper is analyzed. Then, after the theoretical model is constructed, finite element (FE) simulations are conducted to verify the built model. Finally, a series of grasping experiments is carried out to assess the snap-through behavior of the proposed gripper on grasping and sensing. The experimental results illustrate that the proposed gripper can manipulate a variety of soft and rigid objects and remain stable even though it undertakes external disturbances.

Index Modulation with Circularly-Shifted Chirps for Dual-Function Radar and Communications

In this study, we propose index modulation (IM) with circularly-shifted chirps (CSCs) (CSC-IM) for dual-function radar and communication (DFRC) systems. The proposed scheme encodes the information bits with the CSC indices and the phase-shift keying (PSK) symbols. It allows the receiver to exploit the frequency selectivity naturally in fading channels by combining IM and wideband CSCs. It also leverages the fact that a CSC is a constant-envelope signal to achieve a controllable peak-to-mean envelope power ratio (PMEPR). For radar functionality, CSC-IM maintains the good autocorrelation (AC) properties of a chirp by ensuring that the transmitted CSCs are separated apart sufficiently in the time domain through index separation (IS). We investigate the impact of IS on spectral efficiency (SE) and obtain the corresponding mapping functions. For theoretical results, we derive the union bound (UB) of the block error rate (BLER) for arbitrary chirps and the Cramer-Rao lower bounds (CRLBs) for the range and reflection coefficients for the matched filter (MF)-based estimation. We also prove that complementary sequences (CSs) can be constructed through CSCs by linearly combining the Fourier series of CSCs. Finally, through comprehensive comparisons, we demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed scheme for DFRC scenarios.

Two-Dimensional Golay Complementary Array Sets from Generalized Boolean Functions

The one-dimensional (1-D) Golay complementary set (GCS) has many well-known properties and has been widely employed in engineering. The concept of 1-D GCS can be extended to the two-dimensional (2-D) Golay complementary array set (GCAS) where the 2-D aperiodic autocorrelation of constituent arrays sum to zero except for the 2-D zero shift. The 2-D GCAS includes the 2-D Golay complementary array pair (GCAP) as a special case when the set size is 2. In this paper, 2-D generalized Boolean functions are introduced and novel constructions of 2-D GCAPs, 2-D GCASs, and 2-D Golay complementary array mates based on generalized Boolean functions are proposed. Explicit expressions of 2-D Boolean functions for 2-D GCAPs and 2-D GCASs are given. Therefore, they are all direct constructions without the aid of other existing 1-D or 2-D sequences. Moreover, for the column sequences and row sequences of the constructed 2-D GCAPs, their peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) properties are also investigated.

Wideband Index Modulation with Circularly-Shifted Chirps

In this study, we propose a wideband index modulation (IM) based on circularly-shifted chirps. To derive the proposed method, we first prove that a Golay complementary pair (GCP) can be constructed by linearly combining the Fourier series of chirps. We show that Fresnel integrals and/or Bessel functions, arising from sinusoidal and linear chirps, respectively, can lead to GCPs. We then exploit discrete Fourier transform-spread orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (DFT-s-OFDM) to obtain a low-complexity transmitter and receiver. We also discuss its generalization for achieving a trade-off between peak-to-mean envelope power ratio (PMEPR) and spectral efficiency (SE). Through comprehensive simulations, we compare the proposed scheme with DFT-s-OFDM with IM, orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) with IM and complementary sequences (CSs) from Reed-Muller (RM) code. Our numerical results show that the proposed method limits the PMEPR while exploiting the frequency.

How to Construct Mutually Orthogonal Complementary Sets with Non-Power-of-Two Lengths?

Mutually orthogonal complementary sets (MOCSs) have received significant research attention in recent years due to their wide applications in communications and radar. Existing MOCSs which are constructed based on generalized Boolean functions (GBFs) mostly have lengths of power-of-two. How to construct MOCSs with non-power-of-two lengths whilst having large set sizes is a largely open problem. With the aid of GBFs, in this paper, we present new constructions of such MOCSs and show that the maximal achievable set size is $1/2$ of the flock size of an MOCS.
