An Integrated Visual Analytics System for Studying Clinical Carotid Artery Plaques

Carotid artery plaques can cause arterial vascular diseases such as stroke and myocardial infarction, posing a severe threat to human life. However, the current clinical examination mainly relies on a direct assessment by physicians of patients' clinical indicators and medical images, lacking an integrated visualization tool for analyzing the influencing factors and composition of carotid artery plaques. We have designed an intelligent carotid artery plaque visual analysis system for vascular surgery experts to comprehensively analyze the clinical physiological and imaging indicators of carotid artery diseases. The system mainly includes two functions: First, it displays the correlation between carotid artery plaque and various factors through a series of information visualization methods and integrates the analysis of patient physiological indicator data. Second, it enhances the interface guidance analysis of the inherent correlation between the components of carotid artery plaque through machine learning and displays the spatial distribution of the plaque on medical images. Additionally, we conducted two case studies on carotid artery plaques using real data obtained from a hospital, and the results indicate that our designed carotid analysis system can effectively provide clinical diagnosis and treatment guidance for vascular surgeons.

A Predictive Visual Analytics System for Studying Neurodegenerative Disease based on DTI Fiber Tracts

Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) has been used to study the effects of neurodegenerative diseases on neural pathways, which may lead to more reliable and early diagnosis of these diseases as well as a better understanding of how they affect the brain. We introduce an intelligent visual analytics system for studying patient groups based on their labeled DTI fiber tract data and corresponding statistics. The system's AI-augmented interface guides the user through an organized and holistic analysis space, including the statistical feature space, the physical space, and the space of patients over different groups. We use a custom machine learning pipeline to help narrow down this large analysis space, and then explore it pragmatically through a range of linked visualizations. We conduct several case studies using real data from the research database of Parkinson's Progression Markers Initiative.

Vector Field Streamline Clustering Framework for Brain Fiber Tract Segmentation

Brain fiber tracts are widely used in studying brain diseases, which may lead to a better understanding of how disease affects the brain. The segmentation of brain fiber tracts assumed enormous importance in disease analysis. In this paper, we propose a novel vector field streamline clustering framework for brain fiber tract segmentations. Brain fiber tracts are firstly expressed in a vector field and compressed using the streamline simplification algorithm. After streamline normalization and regular-polyhedron projection, high-dimensional features of each fiber tract are computed and fed to the IDEC clustering algorithm. We also provide qualitative and quantitative evaluations of the IDEC clustering method and QB clustering method. Our clustering results of the brain fiber tracts help researchers gain perception of the brain structure. This work has the potential to automatically create a robust fiber bundle template that can effectively segment brain fiber tracts while enabling consistent anatomical tract identification.
