Geometry-Dependent Radiation of Pinching Antennas: Theory, Simulation, and Measurement

Most existing studies achieve beamforming by adjusting the positions of pinching antennas (PAs) and typically model PAs as isotropic radiators. However, under the dielectric scatterer model, the PA radiation pattern depends on its geometry. This letter investigates the radiation patterns of PAs with different geometries through full-wave simulations and measurements, and demonstrates how geometry influences the radiation directivity. In addition, an arc-shaped PA is introduced to enable transmit-direction control in PA systems. A PA system prototype consisting of a dielectric waveguide, waveguide transitions, and a PA element is proposed. Prototype measurements are used to validate the simulations and to characterize the directivity of square and triangular PAs, and the measurement procedure can be applied to obtain radiation patterns for PAs with general geometries. The simulation and measurement results jointly demonstrate that PA geometry is critical in PA systems because it influences the radiation characteristics significantly.

Amplitude-Domain Reflection Modulation for Active RIS-Assisted Wireless Communications

In this paper, we propose a novel active reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-assisted amplitude-domain reflection modulation (ADRM) transmission scheme, termed as ARIS-ADRM. This innovative approach leverages the additional degree of freedom (DoF) provided by the amplitude domain of the active RIS to perform index modulation (IM), thereby enhancing spectral efficiency (SE) without increasing the costs associated with additional radio frequency (RF) chains. Specifically, the ARIS-ADRM scheme transmits information bits through both the modulation symbol and the index of active RIS amplitude allocation patterns (AAPs). To evaluate the performance of the proposed ARIS-ADRM scheme, we provide an achievable rate analysis and derive a closed-form expression for the upper bound on the average bit error probability (ABEP). Furthermore, we formulate an optimization problem to construct the AAP codebook, aiming to minimize the ABEP. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed scheme significantly improves error performance under the same SE conditions compared to its benchmarks. This improvement is due to its ability to flexibly adapt the transmission rate by fully exploiting the amplitude domain DoF provided by the active RIS.

Wireless Power Transfer with Distributed Antennas: System Design, Prototype, and Experiments

In this paper, we design and experiment a far-field wireless power transfer (WPT) architecture based on distributed antennas, so-called WPT DAS, that dynamically selects transmit antenna and frequency to increase the output dc power. Uniquely, spatial and frequency diversities are jointly exploited in the proposed WPT DAS with low complexity, low cost, and flexible deployment to combat the wireless fading channel. A numerical experiment is designed to show the benefits using antenna and frequency selections in spatially and frequency selective fading channels for single-user and multi-user cases. Accordingly, the proposed WPT DAS for single-user and two-user cases is prototyped. At the transmitter, we adopt antenna selection to exploit spatial diversity and adopt frequency selection to exploit frequency diversity. A low-complexity over-the-air limited feedback using an IEEE 802.15.4 RF interface is designed for antenna and frequency selections and reporting from the receiver to the transmitter. The proposed WPT DAS prototype is demonstrated in a real indoor environment. The measurements show that WPT DAS can boost the output dc power by up to 30 dB in single-user case and boost the sum of output dc power by up to 21.8 dB in two-user case and broaden the service coverage area in a low cost, low complexity, and flexible manner.
