Nonlinear Topological Edge States: from Dynamic Delocalization to Thermalization

We consider a mechanical lattice inspired by the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model along with cubic Klein-Gordon type nonlinearity. We investigate the long-time dynamics of the nonlinear edge states, which are obtained by nonlinear continuation of topological edge states of the linearized model. Linearly unstable edge states delocalize and lead to chaos and thermalization of the lattice. Linearly stable edge states also reach the same fate, but after a critical strength of perturbation is added to the initial edge state. We show that the thermalized lattice in all these cases shows an effective renormalization of the dispersion relation. Intriguingly, this renormalized dispersion relation displays a unique symmetry, i.e., its square is symmetric about a finite squared frequency, akin to the chiral symmetry of the linearized model.

Frequency map analysis of spatiotemporal chaos in the nonlinear disordered Klein-Gordon lattice

We study the characteristics of chaos evolution of initially localized energy excitations in the one-dimensional nonlinear disordered Klein-Gordon lattice of anharmonic oscillators, by computing the time variation of the fundamental frequencies of the motion of each oscillator. We focus our attention on the dynamics of the so-called `weak' and `strong chaos' spreading regimes [2010, EPL 91 30001], for which Anderson localization is destroyed. Based on the fact that large variations of the fundamental frequencies denote strong chaotic behavior, we show that in both regimes chaos is more intense at the central regions of the wave packet, where also the energy content is higher, while the oscillators at the wave packet's edges exhibit regular motion up until the time they gain enough energy to become part of the highly excited portion of the wave packet. Eventually, the percentage of chaotic oscillators remains practically constant, despite the fact that the number of excited sites grows as the wave packet spreads, but the portion of highly chaotic sites decreases in time. We show that the extent of the zones of regular motion at the edges of the wave packet in the strong chaos regime is much smaller than in the weak chaos case. Furthermore, we find that in the strong chaos regime the chaotic component of the wave packet is not only more extended than in the weak chaos one, but in addition the fraction of strongly chaotic oscillators is much higher. Another important difference between the weak and strong chaos regimes is that in the latter case a significantly larger number of frequencies is excited, even from the first stages of the evolution. Moreover, our computations confirmed the shifting of fundamental frequencies outside the normal mode frequency band of the linear system in the case of the so-called `selftrapping' regime where a large part of the wave packet remains localized.

Identifying localized and spreading chaos in nonlinear disordered lattices by the Generalized Alignment Index (GALI) method

Implementing the Generalized Alignment Index (GALI) method of chaos detection we investigate the dynamical behavior of the nonlinear disordered Klein-Gordon lattice chain in one spatial dimension. By performing extensive numerical simulations of single site and single mode initial excitations, for several disordered realizations and different disorder strengths, we determine the probability to observe chaotic behavior as the system is approaching its linear limit, i.e. when its total energy, which plays the role of the system's nonlinearity strength, decreases. We find that the percentage of chaotic cases diminishes as the energy decreases leading to exclusively regular motion on multidimensional tori. We also discriminate between localized and spreading chaos, with the former dominating the dynamics for lower energy values. In addition, our results show that single mode excitations lead to more chaotic behaviors for larger energies compared to single site excitations. Furthermore, we demonstrate how the GALI method can be efficiently used to determine a characteristic chaoticity time scale for the system when strong enough nonlinearites lead to energy delocalization in both the so-called `weak' and `strong chaos' spreading regimes.

Energy Transport in 1-Dimensional Oscillator Arrays With Hysteretic Damping

Energy transport in 1-dimensional oscillator arrays has been extensively studied to date in the conservative case, as well as under weak viscous damping. When driven at one end by a sinusoidal force, such arrays are known to exhibit the phenomenon of supratransmission, i.e. a sudden energy surge above a critical driving amplitude. In this paper, we study 1-dimensional oscillator chains in the presence of hysteretic damping, and include nonlinear stiffness forces that are important for many materials at high energies. We first employ Reid's model of local hysteretic damping, and then study a new model of nearest neighbor dependent hysteretic damping to compare their supratransmission and wave packet spreading properties in a deterministic as well as stochastic setting. The results have important quantitative differences, which should be helpful when comparing the merits of the two models in specific engineering applications.

Anomalous diffusion in single and coupled standard maps with extensive chaotic phase spaces

We investigate the long-term diffusion transport and chaos properties of single and coupled standard maps. We consider model parameters that are known to induce anomalous diffusion in the maps' phase spaces, as opposed to normal diffusion which is associated with Gaussian distribution properties of the kinematic variables. This type of transport originates in the presence of the so-called accelerator modes, i.e.~non-chaotic initial conditions which exhibit ballistic transport, which also affect the dynamics in their vicinity. We first systematically study the dynamics of single standard maps, investigating the impact of different ensembles of initial conditions on their behavior and asymptotic diffusion rates, as well as on the respective time-scales needed to acquire these rates. We consider sets of initial conditions in chaotic regions enclosing accelerator modes, which are not bounded by invariant tori. These types of chaotic initial conditions typically lead to normal diffusion transport. We then setup different arrangements of coupled standard maps and investigate their global diffusion properties and chaotic dynamics. Although individual maps bear accelerator modes causing anomalous transport, the global diffusion behavior of the coupled system turns out to depend on the specific configuration of the imposed coupling. Estimating the average diffusion properties for ensembles of initial conditions, as well as measuring the strength of chaos through computations of appropriate indicators, we find conditions and systems' arrangements which systematically favor the suppression of anomalous transport and long-term convergence to normal diffusion rates.

Energy spreading, equipartition and chaos in lattices with non-central forces

We numerically study a one dimensional, nonlinear lattice model which in the linear limit is relevant to the study of bending (flexural) waves. In contrast with the classic one dimensional mass-spring system, the linear dispersion relation of the considered model has different characteristics in the low frequency limit. By introducing disorder in the masses of the lattice particles, we investigate how different nonlinearities (cubic, quartic and their combination) lead to energy delocalization, equipartition and chaotic dynamics. We excite the lattice using single site initial momentum excitations corresponding to a strongly localized linear mode and increase the initial energy of excitation. Beyond a certain energy threshold, when the cubic nonlinearity is present, the system is found to reach energy equipartition and total delocalization. On the other hand, when only the quartic nonlinearity is activated, the system remains localized and away from equipartition at least for the energies and evolution times considered here. However, for large enough energies for all types of nonlinearities we observe chaos. This chaotic behavior is combined with energy delocalization when cubic nonlinearities are present, while the appearance of only quartic nonlinearity leads to energy localization. Our results reveal a rich dynamical behavior and show differences with the relevant Fermi-Pasta-Ulam-Tsingou model. Our findings pave the way for the study of models relevant to bending (flexural) waves in the presence of nonlinearity and disorder, anticipating different energy transport behaviors.

Orbit evolution in growing stellar bars: Bar-supporting orbits at the vertical ILR region

We investigate the evolution of orbital shapes at the Inner Lindblad Resonance region of a rotating three-dimensional bar, the mass of which is growing with time. We evaluate in time-dependent models, during a 5 Gyr period, the importance of orbits with initial conditions known to play a significant role in supporting peanut-like structures in autonomous systems. These orbits are the central family of periodic orbits (x1) and vertical perturbations of it, orbits of its standard three-dimensional bifurcations at the region (x1v1 and x1v2), as well as orbits in their neighbourhood. The knowledge of the regular or chaotic character of these orbits is essential as well, because it allows us to estimate their contribution to the support of a rotating bar and, more importantly, the dynamical mechanisms that make it possible. This is calculated by means of the GALI2 index. We find that orbital patterns existing in the autonomous case, persist for longer times in the more massive bar models, and even more so in a model in which the central spheroid component of our adopted galactic potential becomes rather insignificant. The peanut-supporting orbits which we find, have a regular or, in most cases, a weakly chaotic character. There are cases in which orbits starting close to unstable periodic orbits in an autonomous model behave as regular and support the bar when its mass increases with time. An approximation for the orbital dynamics of our non-autonomous models at a certain time, can be considered that of the corresponding frozen system around that time.

Chaotic dynamics of graphene and graphene nanoribbons

We study the chaotic dynamics of graphene structures, considering both a periodic, defect free, graphene sheet and graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) of various widths. By numerically calculating the maximum Lyapunov exponent, we quantify the chaoticity for a spectrum of energies in both systems. We find that for all cases, the chaotic strength increases with the energy density, and that the onset of chaos in graphene is slow, becoming evident after more than $10^4$ natural oscillations of the system. For the GNRs, we also investigate the impact of the width and chirality (armchair or zigzag edges) on their chaotic behavior. Our results suggest that due to the free edges the chaoticity of GNRs is stronger than the periodic graphene sheet, and decreases by increasing width, tending asymptotically to the bulk value. In addition, the chaotic strength of armchair GNRs is higher than a zigzag ribbon of the same width. Further, we show that the composition of ${}^{12}C$ and ${}^{13}C$ carbon isotopes in graphene has a minor impact on its chaotic strength.

Stability Properties of 1-Dimensional Hamiltonian Lattices with Non-analytic Potentials

We investigate the local and global dynamics of two 1-Dimensional (1D) Hamiltonian lattices whose inter-particle forces are derived from non-analytic potentials. In particular, we study the dynamics of a model governed by a "graphene-type" force law and one inspired by Hollomon's law describing "work-hardening" effects in certain elastic materials. Our main aim is to show that, although similarities with the analytic case exist, some of the local and global stability properties of non-analytic potentials are very different than those encountered in systems with polynomial interactions, as in the case of 1D Fermi-Pasta-Ulam-Tsingou (FPUT) lattices. Our approach is to study the motion in the neighborhood of simple periodic orbits representing continuations of normal modes of the corresponding linear system, as the number of particles $N$ and the total energy $E$ are increased. We find that the graphene-type model is remarkably stable up to escape energy levels where breakdown is expected, while the Hollomon lattice never breaks, yet is unstable at low energies and only attains stability at energies where the harmonic force becomes dominant. We suggest that, since our results hold for large $N$, it would be interesting to study analogous phenomena in the continuum limit where 1D lattices become strings.

Chaotic wave packet spreading in two-dimensional disordered nonlinear lattices

We reveal the generic characteristics of wave packet delocalization in two-dimensional nonlinear disordered lattices by performing extensive numerical simulations in two basic disordered models: the Klein-Gordon system and the discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equation. We find that in both models (a) the wave packet's second moment asymptotically evolves as $t^{a_m}$ with $a_m \approx 1/5$ ($1/3$) for the weak (strong) chaos dynamical regime, in agreement with previous theoretical predictions [S.~Flach, Chem.~Phys.~{\bf 375}, 548 (2010)], (b) chaos persists, but its strength decreases in time $t$ since the finite time maximum Lyapunov exponent $Λ$ decays as $Λ\propto t^{α_Λ}$, with $α_Λ \approx -0.37$ ($-0.46$) for the weak (strong) chaos case, and (c) the deviation vector distributions show the wandering of localized chaotic seeds in the lattice's excited part, which induces the wave packet's thermalization. We also propose a dimension-independent scaling between the wave packet's spreading and chaoticity, which allows the prediction of the obtained $α_Λ$ values.

On the behavior of the Generalized Alignment Index (GALI) method for regular motion in multidimensional Hamiltonian systems

We investigate the behavior of the Generalized Alignment Index of order $k$ (GALI$_k$) for regular orbits of multidimensional Hamiltonian systems. The GALI$_k$ is an efficient chaos indicator, which asymptotically attains positive values for regular motion when $2\leq k \leq N$, with $N$ being the dimension of the torus on which the motion occurs. By considering several regular orbits in the neighborhood of two typical simple, stable periodic orbits of the Fermi-Pasta-Ulam-Tsingou (FPUT) $β$ model for various values of the system's degrees of freedom, we show that the asymptotic GALI$_k$ values decrease when the index's order $k$ increases and when the orbit's energy approaches the periodic orbit's destabilization energy where the stability island vanishes, while they increase when the considered regular orbit moves further away from the periodic one for a fixed energy. In addition, performing extensive numerical simulations we show that the index's behavior does not depend on the choice of the initial deviation vectors needed for its evaluation.

Computational efficiency of numerical integration methods for the tangent dynamics of many-body Hamiltonian systems in one and two spatial dimensions

We investigate the computational performance of various numerical methods for the integration of the equations of motion and the variational equations for some typical classical many-body models of condensed matter physics: the Fermi-Pasta-Ulam-Tsingou (FPUT) chain and the one- and two-dimensional disordered, discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equations (DDNLS). In our analysis we consider methods based on Taylor series expansion, Runge-Kutta discretization and symplectic transformations. The latter have the ability to exactly preserve the symplectic structure of Hamiltonian systems, which results in keeping bounded the error of the system's computed total energy. We perform extensive numerical simulations for several initial conditions of the studied models and compare the numerical efficiency of the used integrators by testing their ability to accurately reproduce characteristics of the systems' dynamics and quantify their chaoticity through the computation of the maximum Lyapunov exponent. We also report the expressions of the implemented symplectic schemes and provide the explicit forms of the used differential operators. Among the tested numerical schemes the symplectic integrators $ABA864$ and $SRKN^a_{14}$ exhibit the best performance, respectively for moderate and high accuracy levels in the case of the FPUT chain, while for the DDNLS models $s9\mathcal{ABC}6$ and $s11\mathcal{ABC}6$ (moderate accuracy), along with $s17\mathcal{ABC}8$ and $s19\mathcal{ABC}8$ (high accuracy) proved to be the most efficient schemes.

Heterogeneity and chaos in the Peyrard-Bishop-Dauxois DNA model

We discuss the effect of heterogeneity on the chaotic properties of the Peyrard-Bishop-Dauxois nonlinear model of DNA. Results are presented for the maximum Lyapunov exponent and the deviation vector distribution. Different compositions of adenine-thymine (AT) and guanine-cytosine (GC) base pairs are examined for various energies up to the melting point of the corresponding sequence. We also consider the effect of the alternation index, which measures the heterogeneity of the DNA chain through the number of alternations between different types (AT or GC) of base pairs, on the chaotic behavior of the system. Biological gene promoter sequences have been also investigated, showing no distinct behavior of the maximum Lyapunov exponent.

Distribution of Base Pair Alternations in a Periodic DNA Chain: Application of Polya Counting to a Physical System

In modeling DNA chains, the number of alternations between Adenine-Thymine (AT) and Guanine-Cytosine (GC) base pairs can be considered as a measure of the heterogeneity of the chain, which in turn could affect its dynamics. A probability distribution function of the number of these alternations is derived for circular or periodic DNA. Since there are several symmetries to account for in the periodic chain, necklace counting methods are used. In particular, Polya's Enumeration Theorem is extended for the case of a group action that preserves partitioned necklaces. This, along with the treatment of generating functions as formal power series, allows for the direct calculation of the number of possible necklaces with a given number of AT base pairs, GC base pairs and alternations. The theoretically obtained probability distribution functions of the number of alternations are accurately reproduced by Monte Carlo simulations and fitted by Gaussians. The effect of the number of base pairs on the characteristics of these distributions is also discussed, as well as the effect of the ratios of the numbers of AT and GC base pairs.

Analyzing Chaos in Higher Order Disordered Quartic-Sextic Klein-Gordon Lattices Using $q$-Statistics

In the study of subdiffusive wave-packet spreading in disordered Klein-Gordon (KG) nonlinear lattices, a central open question is whether the motion continues to be chaotic despite decreasing densities, or tends to become quasi-periodic as nonlinear terms become negligible. In a recent study of such KG particle chains with quartic (4th order) anharmonicity in the on-site potential, it was shown that $q-$Gaussian probability distribution functions of sums of position observables with $q > 1$ always approach pure Gaussians ($q=1$) in the long time limit and hence the motion of the full system is ultimately "strongly chaotic". In the present paper, we show that these results continue to hold even when a sextic (6th order) term is gradually added to the potential and ultimately prevails over the 4th order anharmonicity, despite expectations that the dynamics is more "regular", at least in the regime of small oscillations. Analyzing this system in the subdiffusive energy domain using $q$-statistics, we demonstrate that groups of oscillators centered around the initially excited one (as well as the full chain) possess strongly chaotic dynamics and are thus far from any quasi-periodic torus, for times as long as $t=10^9$.

On the symplectic integration of the discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equation with disorder

We present several methods, which utilize symplectic integration techniques based on two and three part operator splitting, for numerically solving the equations of motion of the disordered, discrete nonlinear Schrödinger (DDNLS) equation, and compare their efficiency. Our results suggest that the most suitable methods for the very long time integration of this one-dimensional Hamiltonian lattice model with many degrees of freedom (of the order of a few hundreds) are the ones based on three part splits of the system's Hamiltonian. Two part split techniques can be preferred for relatively small lattices having up to $N\approx\;$70 sites. An advantage of the latter methods is the better conservation of the system's second integral, i.e. the wave packet's norm.

Chaotic behavior of three interacting vortices in a confined Bose-Einstein condensate

Motivated by recent experimental works, we investigate a system of vortex dynamics in an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC), consisting of three vortices, two of which have the same charge. These vortices are modeled as a system of point particles which possesses a Hamiltonian structure. This tripole system constitutes a prototypical model of vortices in BECs exhibiting chaos. By using the angular momentum integral of motion we reduce the study of the system to the investigation of a two degree of freedom Hamiltonian model and acquire quantitative results about its chaotic behavior. Our investigation tool is the construction of scan maps by using the Smaller ALignment Index (SALI) as a chaos indicator. Applying this approach to a large number of initial conditions we manage to accurately and efficiently measure the extent of chaos in the model and its dependence on physically important parameters like the energy and the angular momentum of the system.

Nonequilibrium chaos of disordered nonlinear waves

Do nonlinear waves destroy Anderson localization? Computational and experimental studies yield subdiffusive nonequilibrium wave packet spreading. Chaotic dynamics and phase decoherence assumptions are used for explaining the data. We perform a quantitative analysis of the nonequilibrium chaos assumption, and compute the time dependence of main chaos indicators - Lyapunov exponents and deviation vector distributions. We find a slowing down of chaotic dynamics, which does not cross over into regular dynamics up to the largest observed time scales, still being fast enough to allow for a thermalization of the spreading wave packet. Strongly localized chaotic spots meander through the system as time evolves. Our findings confirm for the first time that nonequilibrium chaos and phase decoherence persist, fueling the prediction of a complete delocalization.
