Outlier eigenvalues for deformed i.i.d. random matrices

We consider a square random matrix of size N of the form A + Y where A is deterministic and Y has iid entries with variance 1/N. Under mild assumptions, as N grows, the empirical distribution of the eigenvalues of A+Y converges weakly to a limit probability measure βon the complex plane. This work is devoted to the study of the outlier eigenvalues, i.e. eigenvalues in the complement of the support of β. Even in the simplest cases, a variety of interesting phenomena can occur. As in earlier works, we give a sufficient condition to guarantee that outliers are stable and provide examples where their fluctuations vary with the particular distribution of the entries of Y or the Jordan decomposition of A. We also exhibit concrete examples where the outlier eigenvalues converge in distribution to the zeros of a Gaussian analytic function.

A large deviation principle for Wigner matrices without Gaussian tails

We consider $n\times n$ Hermitian matrices with i.i.d. entries $X_{ij}$ whose tail probabilities $\mathbb {P}(|X_{ij}|\geq t)$ behave like $e^{-at^α}$ for some $a>0$ and $α\in(0,2)$. We establish a large deviation principle for the empirical spectral measure of $X/\sqrt{n}$ with speed $n^{1+α/2}$ with a good rate function $J(μ)$ that is finite only if $μ$ is of the form $μ=μ_{\mathrm{sc}}\boxplusν$ for some probability measure $ν$ on $\mathbb {R}$, where $\boxplus$ denotes the free convolution and $μ_{\mathrm{sc}}$ is Wigner's semicircle law. We obtain explicit expressions for $J(μ_{\mathrm{sc}}\boxplusν)$ in terms of the $α$th moment of $ν$. The proof is based on the analysis of large deviations for the empirical distribution of very sparse random rooted networks.

On quantum percolation in finite regular graphs

The aim of this paper is twofold. First, we study eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the adjacency matrix of a bond percolation graph when the base graph is finite and well approximated locally by an infinite regular graph. We relate quantitatively the empirical measure of the eigenvalues and the delocalization of the eigenvectors to the spectrum of the adjacency operator of the percolation on the infinite graph. Secondly, we prove that percolation on an infinite regular tree with degree at least $3$ preserves the existence of an absolutely continuous spectrum if the removal probability is small enough. These two results are notably relevant for bond percolation on a uniformly sampled regular graph or a Cayley graph with large girth.

Extinction probability and total progeny of predator-prey dynamics on infinite trees

We consider the spreading dynamics of two nested invasion clusters on an infinite tree. This model was defined as the chase-escape model by Kordzakhia and it admits a limit process, the birth-and-assassination process, previously introduced by Aldous and Krebs. On both models, we prove an asymptotic equivalent of the extinction probability near criticality. In the subcritical regime, we give a tail bound on the total progeny of the preys before extinction.

Spectrum of Markov generators on sparse random graphs

We investigate the spectrum of the infinitesimal generator of the continuous time random walk on a randomly weighted oriented graph. This is the non-Hermitian random nxn matrix L defined by L(j,k)=X(j,k) if k<>j and L(j,j)=-sum(L(j,k),k<>j), where X(j,k) are i.i.d. random weights. Under mild assumptions on the law of the weights, we establish convergence as n tends to infinity of the empirical spectral distribution of L after centering and rescaling. In particular, our assumptions include sparse random graphs such as the oriented Erdös-Rényi graph where each edge is present independently with probability p(n)->0 as long as np(n) >> (log(n))^6. The limiting distribution is characterized as an additive Gaussian deformation of the standard circular law. In free probability terms, this coincides with the Brown measure of the free sum of the circular element and a normal operator with Gaussian spectral measure. The density of the limiting distribution is analyzed using a subordination formula. Furthermore, we study the convergence of the invariant measure of L to the uniform distribution and establish estimates on the extremal eigenvalues of L.

Mean quantum percolation

We study the spectrum of adjacency matrices of random graphs. We develop two techniques to lower bound the mass of the continuous part of the spectral measure or the density of states. As an application, we prove that the spectral measure of bond percolation in the two dimensional lattice contains a non-trivial continuous part in the supercritical regime. The same result holds for the limiting spectral measure of a supercritical Erdos-Renyi graph and for the spectral measure of a unimodular random tree with at least two ends. We give examples of random graphs with purely continuous spectrum.

Spectrum of large random reversible Markov chains: Heavy-tailed weights on the complete graph

We consider the random reversible Markov kernel K obtained by assigning i.i.d. nonnegative weights to the edges of the complete graph over n vertices and normalizing by the corresponding row sum. The weights are assumed to be in the domain of attraction of an $α$-stable law, $α\in(0,2)$. When $1\leqα<2$, we show that for a suitable regularly varying sequence $κ_n$ of index $1-1/α$, the limiting spectral distribution $μ_α$ of $κ_nK$ coincides with the one of the random symmetric matrix of the un-normalized weights (Lévy matrix with i.i.d. entries). In contrast, when $0<α<1$, we show that the empirical spectral distribution of K converges without rescaling to a nontrivial law $\widetildeμ_α$ supported on [-1,1], whose moments are the return probabilities of the random walk on the Poisson weighted infinite tree (PWIT) introduced by Aldous. The limiting spectral distributions are given by the expected value of the random spectral measure at the root of suitable self-adjoint operators defined on the PWIT. This characterization is used together with recursive relations on the tree to derive some properties of $μ_α$ and $\widetildeμ_α$. We also study the limiting behavior of the invariant probability measure of K.

On Euclidean random matrices in high dimension

In this note, we study the n x n random Euclidean matrix whose entry (i,j) is equal to f (|| Xi - Xj ||) for some function f and the Xi's are i.i.d. isotropic vectors in Rp. In the regime where n and p both grow to infinity and are proportional, we give some sufficient conditions for the empirical distribution of the eigenvalues to converge weakly. We illustrate our result on log-concave random vectors.

Matchings on infinite graphs

Elek and Lippner (2010) showed that the convergence of a sequence of bounded-degree graphs implies the existence of a limit for the proportion of vertices covered by a maximum matching. We provide a characterization of the limiting parameter via a local recursion defined directly on the limit of the graph sequence. Interestingly, the recursion may admit multiple solutions, implying non-trivial long-range dependencies between the covered vertices. We overcome this lack of correlation decay by introducing a perturbative parameter (temperature), which we let progressively go to zero. This allows us to uniquely identify the correct solution. In the important case where the graph limit is a unimodular Galton-Watson tree, the recursion simplifies into a distributional equation that can be solved explicitly, leading to a new asymptotic formula that considerably extends the well-known one by Karp and Sipser for Erdös-Rényi random graphs.

Around the circular law

These expository notes are centered around the circular law theorem, which states that the empirical spectral distribution of a nxn random matrix with i.i.d. entries of variance 1/n tends to the uniform law on the unit disc of the complex plane as the dimension $n$ tends to infinity. This phenomenon is the non-Hermitian counterpart of the semi circular limit for Wigner random Hermitian matrices, and the quarter circular limit for Marchenko-Pastur random covariance matrices. We present a proof in a Gaussian case, due to Silverstein, based on a formula by Ginibre, and a proof of the universal case by revisiting the approach of Tao and Vu, based on the Hermitization of Girko, the logarithmic potential, and the control of the small singular values. Beyond the finite variance model, we also consider the case where the entries have heavy tails, by using the objective method of Aldous and Steele borrowed from randomized combinatorial optimization. The limiting law is then no longer the circular law and is related to the Poisson weighted infinite tree. We provide a weak control of the smallest singular value under weak assumptions, using asymptotic geometric analysis tools. We also develop a quaternionic Cauchy-Stieltjes transform borrowed from the Physics literature.

Localization and delocalization of eigenvectors for heavy-tailed random matrices

Consider an n x n Hermitian random matrix with, above the diagonal, independent entries with alpha-stable symmetric distribution and 0 < alpha < 2. We establish new bounds on the rate of convergence of the empirical spectral distribution of this random matrix as n goes to infinity. When 1 < alpha < 2 we give vanishing bounds on the Lp-norm of the eigenvectors normalized to have unit L2-norm goes to 0. On the contrary, when 0 < alpha < 2/3, we prove that these eigenvectors are localized.

Spectrum of non-Hermitian heavy tailed random matrices

Let (X_{jk})_{j,k>=1} be i.i.d. complex random variables such that |X_{jk}| is in the domain of attraction of an alpha-stable law, with 0< alpha <2. Our main result is a heavy tailed counterpart of Girko's circular law. Namely, under some additional smoothness assumptions on the law of X_{jk}, we prove that there exists a deterministic sequence a_n ~ n^{1/alpha} and a probability measure mu_alpha on C depending only on alpha such that with probability one, the empirical distribution of the eigenvalues of the rescaled matrix a_n^{-1} (X_{jk})_{1<=j,k<=n} converges weakly to mu_alpha as n tends to infinity. Our approach combines Aldous & Steele's objective method with Girko's Hermitization using logarithmic potentials. The underlying limiting object is defined on a bipartized version of Aldous' Poisson Weighted Infinite Tree. Recursive relations on the tree provide some properties of mu_alpha. In contrast with the Hermitian case, we find that mu_alpha is not heavy tailed.

Combinatorial optimization over two random point sets

We analyze combinatorial optimization problems over a pair of random point sets of equal cardinal. Typical examples include the matching of minimal length, the traveling salesperson tour constrained to alternate between points of each set, or the connected bipartite r-regular graph of minimal length. As the cardinal of the sets goes to infinity, we investigate the convergence of such bipartite functionals.

The rank of diluted random graphs

We investigate the rank of the adjacency matrix of large diluted random graphs: for a sequence of graphs $(G_n)_{n\geq0}$ converging locally to a Galton--Watson tree $T$ (GWT), we provide an explicit formula for the asymptotic multiplicity of the eigenvalue 0 in terms of the degree generating function $ϕ_*$ of $T$. In the first part, we show that the adjacency operator associated with $T$ is always self-adjoint; we analyze the associated spectral measure at the root and characterize the distribution of its atomic mass at 0. In the second part, we establish a sufficient condition on $ϕ_*$ for the expectation of this atomic mass to be precisely the normalized limit of the dimension of the kernel of the adjacency matrices of $(G_n)_{n\geq 0}$. Our proofs borrow ideas from analysis of algorithms, functional analysis, random matrix theory and statistical physics.

On the spectrum of sum and product of non-hermitian random matrices

In this short note, we revisit the work of T. Tao and V. Vu on large non-hermitian random matrices with independent and identically distributed entries with mean zero and unit variance. We prove under weaker assumptions that the limit spectral distribution of sum and product of non-hermitian random matrices is universal. As a byproduct, we show that the generalized eigenvalues distribution of two independent matrices converges almost surely to the uniform measure on the Riemann sphere.

Load optimization in a planar network

We analyze the asymptotic properties of a Euclidean optimization problem on the plane. Specifically, we consider a network with three bins and $n$ objects spatially uniformly distributed, each object being allocated to a bin at a cost depending on its position. Two allocations are considered: the allocation minimizing the bin loads and the allocation allocating each object to its less costly bin. We analyze the asymptotic properties of these allocations as the number of objects grows to infinity. Using the symmetries of the problem, we derive a law of large numbers, a central limit theorem and a large deviation principle for both loads with explicit expressions. In particular, we prove that the two allocations satisfy the same law of large numbers, but they do not have the same asymptotic fluctuations and rate functions.

Circular Law Theorem for Random Markov Matrices

Consider an nxn random matrix X with i.i.d. nonnegative entries with bounded density, mean m, and finite positive variance sigma^2. Let M be the nxn random Markov matrix with i.i.d. rows obtained from X by dividing each row of X by its sum. In particular, when X11 follows an exponential law, then M belongs to the Dirichlet Markov Ensemble of random stochastic matrices. Our main result states that with probability one, the counting probability measure of the complex spectrum of n^(1/2)M converges weakly as n tends to infinity to the uniform law on the centered disk of radius sigma/m. The bounded density assumption is purely technical and comes from the way we control the operator norm of the resolvent.

Spectrum of large random reversible Markov chains: two examples

We take on a Random Matrix theory viewpoint to study the spectrum of certain reversible Markov chains in random environment. As the number of states tends to infinity, we consider the global behavior of the spectrum, and the local behavior at the edge, including the so called spectral gap. Results are obtained for two simple models with distinct limiting features. The first model is built on the complete graph while the second is a birth-and-death dynamics. Both models give rise to random matrices with non independent entries.
