Detecting Transportation Mode Using Dense Smartphone GPS Trajectories and Transformer Models

Transportation mode detection is an important topic within GeoAI and transportation research. In this study, we introduce SpeedTransformer, a novel Transformer-based model that relies solely on speed inputs to infer transportation modes from dense smartphone GPS trajectories. In benchmark experiments, SpeedTransformer outperformed traditional deep learning models, such as the Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) network. Moreover, the model demonstrated strong flexibility in transfer learning, achieving high accuracy across geographical regions after fine-tuning with small datasets. Finally, we deployed the model in a real-world experiment, where it consistently outperformed baseline models under complex built environments and high data uncertainty. These findings suggest that Transformer architectures, when combined with dense GPS trajectories, hold substantial potential for advancing transportation mode detection and broader mobility-related research.

CAPC-CG: A Large-Scale, Expert-Directed LLM-Annotated Corpus of Adaptive Policy Communication in China

We introduce CAPC-CG, the Chinese Adaptive Policy Communication (Central Government) Corpus, the first open dataset of Chinese policy directives annotated with a five-color taxonomy of clear and ambiguous language categories, building on Ang's theory of adaptive policy communication. Spanning 1949-2023, this corpus includes national laws, administrative regulations, and ministerial rules issued by China's top authorities. Each document is segmented into paragraphs, producing a total of 3.3 million units. Alongside the corpus, we release comprehensive metadata, a two-round labeling framework, and a gold-standard annotation set developed by expert and trained coders. Inter-annotator agreement achieves a Fleiss's kappa of K = 0.86 on directive labels, indicating high reliability for supervised modeling. We provide baseline classification results with several large language models (LLMs), together with our annotation codebook, and describe patterns from the dataset. This release aims to support downstream tasks and multilingual NLP research in policy communication.

Wi-Fi and Bluetooth Contact Tracing Without User Intervention

Previous contact tracing systems required the users to perform many manual actions, such as installing smartphone applications, joining wireless networks, or carrying custom user devices. This increases the barrier to entry and lowers the user adoption rate. As a result, the contact tracing effectiveness is reduced. Unlike the systems above, we propose a new privacy preserving Wi-Fi and Bluetooth (BLE) contact tracing system that does not require smartphone applications, joining wireless networks, or custom user devices. Our specially built routers seamlessly track smartphones, laptops, smartwatches, BLE headphones, and tablets without any user action, but do not trace user identity. Mapping between devices and users is only carried out for confirmed cases and suspected contacts. Moreover, we can track the absolute positions of user devices within 1.0 m due to using bidirectional long short-term memory neural networks that are trained with data pre-collected by an autonomous robot. This allows public health authorities to track indirect droplet and surface transmissions that other contact tracing systems often overlook.
