Degenerations, fibrations and higher rank Landau-Ginzburg models

We study semi-stable degenerations of quasi-Fano varieties to unions of two pieces. We conjecture that the higher rank Landau-Ginzburg models mirror to these two pieces can be glued together to lower rank Landau-Ginzburg models which are mirror to the original quasi-Fano varieties. We prove this conjecture by relating their Euler characteristics, generalized functional invariants as well as periods. We also use it to conjecture a relation between the degenerations to the normal cones and the fibrewise compactifications of higher rank Landau-Ginzburg models. Furthermore, we use it to iterate the Doran-Harder-Thompson conjecture and obtain higher codimension Calabi-Yau fibrations.

Normal Forms and Tyurin Degenerations of K3 Surfaces Polarised by a Rank 18 Lattice

We study projective Type II degenerations of K3 surfaces polarised by a certain rank 18 lattice, where the central fibre consists of a pair of rational surfaces glued along a smooth elliptic curve. Given such a degeneration, one may construct other degenerations of the same kind by flopping curves on the central fibre, but the degenerations obtained from this process are not usually projective. We construct a series of examples which are all projective and which are all related by flopping single curves from one component of the central fibre to the other. Moreover, we show that this list is complete, in the sense that no other flops are possible. The components of the central fibres obtained include weak del Pezzo surfaces of all possible degrees. This shows that projectivity need not impose any meaningful constraints on the surfaces that can arise as components in Type II degenerations.

The Mirror Clemens-Schmid Sequence

We introduce a four-term long exact sequence that relates the cohomology of a smooth variety admitting a projective morphism onto a projective base to the cohomology of the open set obtained by removing the preimage of a general linear section. We show that this sequence respects the perverse Leray filtration and induces exact sequences of mixed Hodge structures on its graded pieces. We conjecture that this exact sequence should be thought of as mirror to the Clemens-Schmid sequence, which describes the cohomology of degenerations. We exhibit this mirror relationship explicitly for all Type II and many Type III degenerations of K3 surfaces. In three dimensions, we show that for Tyurin degenerations of Calabi-Yau threefolds our conjecture is a consequence of existing mirror conjectures, and we explicitly verify our conjecture for a more complicated degeneration of the quintic threefold.

Motivic geometry of two-loop Feynman integrals

We study the geometry and Hodge theory of the cubic hypersurfaces attached to two-loop Feynman integrals for generic physical parameters. We show that the Hodge structure attached to planar two-loop Feynman graphs decomposes into mixed Tate pieces and the Hodge structures of families of hyperelliptic, elliptic, or rational curves depending on the space-time dimension. For two-loop graphs with a small number of edges, we give more precise results. In particular, we recover a result of Bloch arXiv:2105.06132 that in the well-known double box example, there is an underlying family of elliptic curves, and we give a concrete description of these elliptic curves. We argue that the motive for the non-planar two-loop tardigrade graph is that of a K3 surface of Picard number 11 and determine the generic lattice polarization. Lastly, we show that generic members of the ice cream cone family of graph hypersurfaces correspond to pairs of sunset Calabi--Yau varieties.

The Doran-Harder-Thompson conjecture for toric complete intersections

Given a Tyurin degeneration of a Calabi-Yau complete intersection in a toric variety, we prove gluing formulas relating the generalized functional invariants, periods, and $I$-functions of the mirror Calabi-Yau family and those of the two mirror Landau-Ginzburg models. Our proof makes explicit the "gluing/splitting" of fibrations in the Doran-Harder-Thompson mirror conjecture. Our gluing formula implies an identity, obtained by composition with their respective mirror maps, that relates the absolute Gromov-Witten invariants for the Calabi-Yaus and relative Gromov-Witten invariants for the quasi-Fanos.

$K_2$ and quantum curves

A 2015 conjecture of Codesido-Grassi-Mariño in topological string theory relates the enumerative invariants of toric CY 3-folds to the spectra of operators attached to their mirror curves. We deduce two consequences of this conjecture for the integral regulators of $K_2$-classes on these curves, and then prove both of them; the results thus give evidence for the CGM conjecture. (While the conjecture and the deduction process both entail forms of local mirror symmetry, the consequences/theorems do not: they only involve the curves themselves.) Our first theorem relates zeroes of the higher normal function to the spectra of the operators for curves of genus one, and suggests a new link between analysis and arithmetic geometry. The second theorem provides dilogarithm formulas for limits of regulator periods at the maximal conifold point in moduli of the curves.

Towards the Doran-Harder-Thompson conjecture via the Gross-Siebert program

The Doran-Harder-Thompson "gluing/splitting" conjecture unifies mirror symmetry conjectures for Calabi-Yau and Fano varieties, relating fibration structures on Calabi-Yau varieties to the existence of certain types of degenerations on their mirrors. This was studied for the case of Calabi-Yau complete intersections in toric varieties by Doran, Kostiuk and You for the Hori-Vafa mirror construction. In this paper we prove one direction of the conjecture using a modified version of the Gross-Siebert program. This involves a careful study of the implications within tropical geometry and applying modern deformation theory for singular Calabi-Yau varieties.

Hypergeometric decomposition of symmetric K3 quartic pencils

We study the hypergeometric functions associated to five one-parameter deformations of Delsarte K3 quartic hypersurfaces in projective space. We compute all of their Picard--Fuchs differential equations; we count points using Gauss sums and rewrite this in terms of finite field hypergeometric sums; then we match up each differential equation to a factor of the zeta function, and we write this in terms of global L-functions. This computation gives a complete, explicit description of the motives for these pencils in terms of hypergeometric motives.

Calabi-Yau manifolds realizing symplectically rigid monodromy tuples

We define an iterative construction that produces a family of elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau $n$-folds with section from a family of elliptic Calabi-Yau varieties of one dimension lower. Parallel to the geometric construction, we iteratively obtain for each family with a point of maximal unipotent monodromy, normalized to be at t=0, its Picard-Fuchs operator and a closed-form expression for the period holomorphic at t=0, through a generalization of the classical Euler transform for hypergeometric functions. In particular, our construction yields one-parameter families of elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau manifolds with section whose Picard-Fuchs operators realize all symplectically rigid Calabi-Yau differential operators with three regular singular points classified by Bogner and Reiter, but also non-rigid operators with four singular points.

Calabi-Yau threefolds fibred by high rank lattice polarized K3 surfaces

We study threefolds fibred by K3 surfaces admitting a lattice polarization by a certain class of rank 19 lattices. We begin by showing that any family of such K3 surfaces is completely determined by a map from the base of the family to the appropriate K3 moduli space, which we call the generalized functional invariant. Then we show that if the threefold total space is a smooth Calabi-Yau, there are only finitely many possibilities for the polarizing lattice and the form of the generalized functional invariant. Finally, we construct explicit examples of Calabi-Yau threefolds realizing each case and compute their Hodge numbers.

Mirror Symmetry for Lattice Polarized del Pezzo Surfaces

We describe a notion of lattice polarization for rational elliptic surfaces and weak del Pezzo surfaces, and describe the complex moduli of the former and the Kähler cone of the latter. We then propose a version of mirror symmetry relating these two objects, which should be thought of as a form of Fano-LG correspondence. Finally, we relate this notion to other forms of mirror symmetry, including Dolgachev-Nikulin-Pinkham mirror symmetry for lattice polarized K3 surfaces and the Gross-Siebert program.

Equivalences of Families of Stacky Toric Calabi-Yau Hypersurfaces

Given the same anti-canonical linear system on two distinct toric varieties, we provide a derived equivalence between partial crepant resolutions of the corresponding stacky hypersurfaces. The applications include: a derived unification of toric mirror constructions, calculations of Picard lattices for linear systems of quartic surfaces, and a birational reduction of Reid's list to 81 families.

Zeta functions of alternate mirror Calabi-Yau families

We prove that if two Calabi-Yau invertible pencils have the same dual weights, then they share a common factor in their zeta functions. By using Dwork cohomology, we demonstrate that this common factor is related to a hypergeometric Picard--Fuchs differential equation. The factor in the zeta function is defined over the rationals and has degree at least the order of the Picard--Fuchs equation. As an application, we relate several pencils of K3 surfaces to the Dwork pencil, obtaining new cases of arithmetic mirror symmetry.

Hodge Numbers from Picard-Fuchs Equations

Given a variation of Hodge structure over $\mathbb{P}^1$ with Hodge numbers $(1,1,\dots,1)$, we show how to compute the degrees of the Deligne extension of its Hodge bundles, following Eskin-Kontsevich-Möller-Zorich, by using the local exponents of the corresponding Picard-Fuchs equation. This allows us to compute the Hodge numbers of Zucker's Hodge structure on the corresponding parabolic cohomology groups. We also apply this to families of elliptic curves, K3 surfaces and Calabi-Yau threefolds.

Mirror symmetry, Tyurin degenerations and fibrations on Calabi-Yau manifolds

We investigate a potential relationship between mirror symmetry for Calabi-Yau manifolds and the mirror duality between quasi-Fano varieties and Landau-Ginzburg models. More precisely, we show that if a Calabi-Yau admits a so-called Tyurin degeneration to a union of two Fano varieties, then one should be able to construct a mirror to that Calabi-Yau by gluing together the Landau-Ginzburg models of those two Fano varieties. We provide evidence for this correspondence in a number of different settings, including Batyrev-Borisov mirror symmetry for K3 surfaces and Calabi-Yau threefolds, Dolgachev-Nikulin mirror symmetry for K3 surfaces, and an explicit family of threefolds that are not realized as complete intersections in toric varieties.

Calabi-Yau Threefolds Fibred by Mirror Quartic K3 Surfaces

We study threefolds fibred by mirror quartic K3 surfaces. We begin by showing that any family of such K3 surfaces is completely determined by a map from the base of the family to the moduli space of mirror quartic K3 surfaces. This is then used to give a complete explicit description of all Calabi-Yau threefolds fibred by mirror quartic K3 surfaces. We conclude by studying the properties of such Calabi-Yau threefolds, including their Hodge numbers and deformation theory.

Special function identities from superelliptic Kummer varieties

We prove that the factorization of Appell's generalized hypergeometric series satisfying the so-called quadric property into a product of two Gauss' hypergeometric functions has a geometric origin: we first construct a generalized Kummer variety as minimal nonsingular model for a product-quotient surface with only rational double points from a pair of superelliptic curves of genus $2r-1$ with $r \in \mathbb{N}$. We then show that this generalized Kummer variety is equipped with two fibrations with fibers of genus $2r-1$. When periods of a holomorphic two-form over carefully crafted transcendental two-cycles on the generalized Kummer variety are evaluated using either of the two fibrations, the answer must be independent of the fibration and the aforementioned family of special function identities is obtained. This family of identities can be seen as a multivariate generalization of Clausen's Formula. Interestingly, this paper's finding bridges Ernst Kummer's two independent lines of research, algebraic transformations for the Gauss' hypergeometric function and nodal surfaces of degree four in $\mathbb{P}^3$.
