Radiative and Collisional Jet Energy Loss in the Quark-Gluon Plasma at RHIC

We calculate and compare bremsstrahlung and collisional energy loss of hard partons traversing a quark-gluon plasma. Our treatment of both processes is complete at leading order in the coupling and accounts for the probabilistic nature of the jet energy loss. We find that the nuclear modification factor $R_{AA}$ for neutral $π^0$ production in heavy ion collisions is sensitive to the inclusion of collisional and radiative energy loss contributions while the averaged energy loss only slightly increases if collisional energy loss is included for parent parton energies $E\gg T$. These results are important for the understanding of jet quenching in Au+Au collisions at $200 {\rm AGeV}$ at RHIC. Comparison with data is performed applying the energy loss calculation to a relativistic ideal (3+1)-dimensional hydrodynamic description of the thermalized medium formed at RHIC.

Elliptic flow of thermal dileptons in relativistic nuclear collisions

We calculate the transverse momentum and invariant mass dependence of elliptic flow of thermal dileptons for Au+Au collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. The system is described using hydrodynamics, with the assumption of formation of a thermalized quark-gluon plasma at some early time, followed by cooling through expansion, hadronization and decoupling. Dileptons are emitted throughout the expansion history: by annihilation of quarks and anti-quarks inthe early quark-gluon plasma stage and through a set of hadronic reactions during the late hadronic stage. The resulting differential elliptic flow exhibits a rich structure, with different dilepton mass windows providing access to different stages of the expansion history. Elliptic flow measurements for dileptons, combined with those of hadrons and direct photons, are a powerful tool for mapping the time-evolution of heavy-ion collisions.

Photon Production from Charge-Asymmetric Hot and Dense Matter

A new channel of direct photon production from a quark gluon plasma (QGP) is explored. This process appears at Next-to-Leading-Order in the presence of a charge asymmetry in the heated matter and may be effectively described as the bremsstrahlung of a real photon from a thermal gluon. The photon production from this new mechanism is calculated in the effective theory of QCD at high temperature. The results show that the photon production rate may not as big as the annihilation and Compton scattering at low baryon density, but could become important in baryon-rich matter.

Electromagnetic Radiation from Broken Symmetries in Relativistic Nuclear Collisions

A new channel of direct photon production from a quark gluon plasma (QGP) is explored in the framework of high-temperature QCD. This process appears at next-to-leading order, in the presence of a charge asymmetry in the excited matter. The photon production rate from this new mechanism is suppressed compared to the QCD annihilation and Compton scattering at low baryon density but assumes importance in baryon-rich matter.

High momentum lepton pairs from jet-plasma interactions

We discuss the emission of high momentum lepton pairs (p_T>4 GeV) with low invariant masses (M << p_T) in central Au+Au collisions at RHIC (\sqrt{s_{NN}}=200 GeV). The spectra of dileptons produced through interactions of quark and antiquark jets with the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) have been calculated. Annihilation and Compton scattering processes, as well as processes benefitting from collinear enhancement, including Landau-Pomeranchuk-Migdal (LPM) effects, are calculated and convolved with a one dimensional hydrodynamic expansion. The jet-induced contributions are compared to thermal dilepton emission and Drell-Yan processes, and are found to dominate around p_T=4 GeV.

Elliptic flow of thermal photons and dileptons

In this talk we describe the recently discovered rich phenomenology of elliptic flow of electromagnetic probes of the hot matter created in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. Using a hydrodynamic model for the space-time dynamics of the collision fireball created in Au+Au collisions at RHIC, we compute the transverse momentum spectra and elliptic flow of thermal photons and dileptons. These observables are shown to provide differential windows into various stages of the fireball expansion.

Intermediate mass dileptons in relativistic nuclear collisions

We consider the production of lepton pairs with intermediate invariant masses, in relativistic nuclear collisions. Thermal sources are briefly discussed, as well as a newer production mechanism which involves jet-plasma interactions. Estimates for high p_T lepton pairs are provided.

The thermal nature of high p_T photons in high energy nuclear collisions

We discuss the recent status of some penetrating electromagnetic probes of relativistic nuclear collisions, and the information contained in their measurement. We concentrate in turn on sources that produce high p_T photons: those of purely thermal origin, those producing direct photons, those related to jet fragmentation, and those associated with the interaction of jets with the colored plasma. Whenever possible, we compare with RHIC data and in some cases we make predictions for the LHC.

High Momentum Dilepton Production from Jets in a Quark Gluon Plasma

We discuss the emission of high momentum lepton pairs in central Au+Au collisions at RHIC ($\sqrt{s_{NN}}=$200 GeV) and Pb+Pb collisions at the LHC ($\sqrt{s_{NN}}=$5500 GeV). Yields of dileptons produced through interactions of jets with thermal partons have been calculated, with next-to-leading order corrections through hard thermal loops (HTL) resummation. They are compared to thermal dilepton emission and the Drell-Yan process. A complete leading order treatment of jet energy loss has been included. Jet-plasma interactions are found to dominate over thermal dilepton emission for all values of the invariant mass $M$. Drell-Yan is the dominant source of high momentum lepton pairs for $M >$ 3 GeV at RHIC, after the background from heavy quark decays is subtracted. At LHC, the range $M<7$ GeV is dominated by jet-plasma interactions. Effects from jet energy loss on jet-plasma interactions turn out to be weak, but non-negligible, reducing the yield of low-mass dileptons by about 30%.

Fluctuations in jet momentum as an energy loss probe

We investigate the measurement of the distribution of away-side jet $p_T$ as a way to probe the energy loss mechanism in heavy ion collisions, and constrain the properties of the medium created in heavy ion collisions. We define an observable related to the fluctuation of the energy deposited in the medium, and show that competing models of parton energy loss give differing values and scaling of this observable. We also argue that the scaling of this observable with system size can be related to the medium's partonic density. We then give a qualitative discussion of how the measurement we suggest can be performed and used to determine the parton energy loss mechanism and possibly the system's partonic density.

Azimuthal Asymmetry of Direct Photons in High Energy Nuclear Collisions

We show that a sizeable azimuthal asymmetry, characterized by a coefficient v_2, is to be expected for direct photons produced in non-central high energy nuclear collisions. This signal is generated by photons radiated by jets interacting with the surrounding hot plasma. The anisotropy is out of phase by an angle $π/2$ with respect to that associated with the elliptic anisotropy of hadrons, leading to negative values of v_2. Such an asymmetry, if observed, could be a signature for the presence of a quark gluon plasma and would establish the importance of jet-plasma interactions as a source of electromagnetic radiation.

Electromagnetic Signals at RHIC

We calculate the direct photon yield in central and mid-peripheral Au+Au collisions at the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider (RHIC). The processes involving the propagation of jets have been convolved with a leading order treatment of jet energy loss in the medium and a one dimensional hydrodynamic expansion. The quark-gluon plasma (QGP) contribution turns out to be important, especially the in-medium conversion of a jet into a photon, for successfully describing recent photon measurements.

Bremsstrahlung neutrinos from electron-electron scattering in a relativistic degenerate electron plasma

We present a calculation of neutrino pair bremsstrahlung due to electron-electron scattering in a relativistic degenerate plasma of electrons. Proper treatment of the in-medium photon propagator, i.e., inclusion of Debye screening of the longitudinal part and Landau damping of the transverse part, leads to a neutrino emissivity which is several orders of magnitude larger than when Debye screening is imposed for the tranverse part. Our results show that this in-medium process can compete with other sources of neutrino radiation and can, in some cases, even be the dominant neutrino emission mechanism. We also discuss the natural extension to quark-quark bremsstrahlung in gapped and ungapped quark matter.

Energy Loss of Leading Hadrons and Direct Photon production in Evolving Quark-Gluon Plasma

We calculate the nuclear modification factor of neutral pions and the photon yield at high p_T in central Au-Au collisions at RHIC (\sqrt{s}=200 GeV) and Pb-Pb collisions at the LHC (\sqrt{s}=5500 GeV). A leading-order accurate treatment of jet energy loss in the medium has been convolved with a physical description of the initial spatial distribution of jets and a (1+1) dimensional expansion. We reproduce the nuclear modification factor of pion R_{AA} at RHIC, assuming an initial temperature T_i=370 MeV and a formation time τ_i=0.26 fm/c, corresponding to dN/dy=1260. The resulting suppression depends on the particle rapidity density dN/dy but weakly on the initial temperature. The jet energy loss treatment is also included in the calculation of high p_T photons. Photons coming from primordial hard N-N scattering are the dominant contribution at RHIC for p_T > 5 GeV, while at the LHC, the range 8<p_T<14 GeV is dominated by jet-photon conversion in the plasma.

A Transport Model for Nuclear Reactions Induced by Radioactive Beams

Major ingredients of an isospin and momentum dependent transport model for nuclear reactions induced by radioactive beams are outlined. Within the IBUU04 version of this model we study several experimental probes of the equation of state of neutron-rich matter, especially the density dependence of the nuclear symmetry energy. Comparing with the recent experimental data from NSCL/MSU on isospin diffusion, we found a nuclear symmetry energy of $% E_{sym}(ρ)\approx 31.6(ρ/ρ_{0})^{1.05}$ at subnormal densities. Predictions on several observables sensitive to the density dependence of the symmetry energy at supranormal densities accessible at GSI and the planned Rare Isotope Accelerator (RIA) are also made.

In-medium effects on electromagnetic probes

We discuss some of the aspects of the physics of relativistic nuclear collisions, in particular those having to do with the observation of electromagnetic radiation. We concentrate on what such measurements tell us about the local, in-medium properties of the environment from which they emerge. The contribution from different sources are considered: that from the partonic sector of QCD, and that from the confined hadronic phase. Specifically, we discuss the observation of real photons and of lepton pairs at the SPS and at RHIC, and make predictions for the LHC. The role of jets is discussed.

Photon production in relativistic nuclear collisions at SPS and RHIC energies

Chiral Lagrangians are used to compute the production rate of photons from the hadronic phase of relativistic nuclear collisions. Special attention is paid to the role of the pseudovector a_1 meson. Calculations that include reactions with strange mesons, hadronic form factors and vector spectral densities consistent with dilepton production, as well as the emission from a quark-gluon plasma and primordial nucleon-nucleon collisions, reproduce the photon spectra measured at the Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS). Predictions for the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) are made.
