Coherence Time Effects on J/psi Production and Suppression in Relativistic Heavy Ion Collisions

Using a coherence time extracted from high precision proton-nucleus Drell-Yan measurements and a nuclear absorption cross section extracted from pA charmonium production experiments, we study J/psi production and absorption in nucleus-nucleus collisions. We find that coherence time effects are large enough to affect the measured J/psi-to-Drell-Yan ratio. The S+U data at 200A GeV/c measured by NA38 are reproduced quantitatively without the introduction of any new parameters. However, when compared with recent NA50 measurements for Pb+Pb at 158A GeV/c, the data is not reproduced in trend or in magnitude.

Drell-Yan and J/psi Production in High Energy Proton-Nucleus and Nucleus-Nucleus Collisions

The distributions of outgoing protons and charged hadrons in high energy proton-nucleus collisions are described rather well by a linear extrapolation from proton-proton collisions. This linear extrapolation is applied to precisely measured Drell-Yan cross sections for 800 GeV protons incident on a variety of nuclear targets. The deviation from linear scaling in the atomic number A can be accounted for by energy degradation of the proton as it passes through the nucleus if account is taken of the time delay of particle production due to quantum coherence. We infer an average proper coherence time of 0.4 +/- 0.1 fm/c. Then we apply the linear extrapolation to measured J/psi production cross sections for 200 and 450 GeV/c protons incident on a variety of nuclear targets. Our analysis takes into account energy loss of the beam proton, the time delay of particle production due to quantum coherence, and absorption of the J/psi on nucleons. The best representation is obtained for a coherence time of 0.5 fm/c, which is consistent with Drell-Yan production, and an absorption cross section of 3.6 mb, which is consistent with the value deduced from photoproduction of the J/psi on nuclear targets. Finally, we compare to recent J/psi data from S+U and Pb+Pb collisions at the SPS. The former are reproduced reasonably well with no new parameters, but not the latter.

Splintering central nuclear collisions with a momentum-dependent lattice Hamiltonian theory

We formulate a lattice Hamiltonian model for intermediate energy heavy ion collisions. Our approach incorporates a momentum-dependent nuclear mean field that yields an optical potential that agrees with proton-nucleus experiments and that also receives support from measurements involving heavy ions. We emphasize the precision of our numerical results in connection with energy and momentum conservation. We first outline the static properties of our solutions, after which we consider recent stopping power results for heavy ion collisions. The results obtained with different types of nuclear mean fields are compared with each other. Consequences of the stopping power data on the nuclear equation of state are outlined.

An investigation of nuclear collisions with a momentum-dependent Lattice Hamiltonian model

We formulate a Lattice Hamiltonian approach for the modeling of intermediate energy heavy ion collisions. After verifying stationary ground state solutions, we implement this in a calculation of nuclear stopping power and compare our results with experimental data. Our findings support a relatively soft nuclear equation of state, with a momentum-dependent self-consistent mean field.

$ρ$ meson broadening and dilepton production in heavy ion collisions

The modification of the width of the rho meson due to in-medium decays and collisions is evaluated. In high temperature and/or high density hadronic matter, the collision width is much larger than the one-loop decay width. The large width of the $ρ$ meson in matter seems to be consistent with some current interpretations of the $e^+ e^-$ mass spectra measured at the CERN/SPS.

Rho Meson Broadening in Hot and Dense Hadronic Matter

The modification of the width of rho mesons due to in-medium decays and collisions is evaluated. The decay width is calculated from the imaginary part of the one-loop self-energy at finite temperature. The collision width is related to the cross sections of the $ρ$ + pion and the $ρ$ + nucleon reactions. A calculation based on an effective Lagrangian shows the importance of including the direct $ρπ\toρπ$ scattering which is dominated by the $a_1$ exchange. A large broadening of the spectral function is found, accompanied by a strength suppression at the pole.

J/psi Production and Absorption in High Energy Proton-Nucleus Collisions

Measured J/Psi production cross sections for 200 and 450 GeV/c protons incident on a variety of nuclear targets are analyzed within a Glauber framework which takes into account energy loss of the beam proton, the time delay of particle production due to quantum coherence, and absorption of the J/Psi on nucleons. The best representation is obtained for a coherence time of 0.5 fm/c, previously determined by Drell-Yan production in proton-nucleus collisions, and an absorption cross section of 3.6 mb, which is consistent with the value deduced from photoproduction of the J/Psi on nuclear targets.

Baryon, Charged Hadron, Drell-Yan and J/Psi Production in High Energy Proton-Nucleus Collisions

We show that the distributions of outgoing protons and charged hadrons in high energy proton-nucleus collisions are described rather well by a linear extrapolation from proton-proton collisions. The only adjustable parameter required is the shift in rapidity of a produced charged meson when it encounters a target nucleon. Its fitted value is 0.16. Next, we apply this linear extrapolation to precisely measured Drell-Yan cross sections for 800 GeV protons incident on a variety of nuclear targets which exhibit a deviation from linear scaling in the atomic number A. We show that this deviation can be accounted for by energy degradation of the proton as it passes through the nucleus if account is taken of the time delay of particle production due to quantum coherence. We infer an average proper coherence time of 0.4 +/- 0.1 fm/c, corresponding to a coherence path length of 8 +/- 2 fm in the rest frame of the nucleus. Finally, we apply the linear extrapolation to measured J/Psi production cross sections for 200 and 450 GeV/c protons incident on a variety of nuclear targets.

Off-shell effects in dilepton production from hot interacting mesons

The production of dielectrons in reactions involving a_1 mesons and pions is studied. We compare results obtained with different phenomenological Lagrangians that have been used in connection with hadronic matter and finite nuclei. We insist on the necessity for those interactions to satisfy known empirical properties of the strong interaction. Large off-shell effects in dielectron production are found and some consequences for the interpretation of heavy ion data are outlined. We also compare with results obtained using experimentally-extracted spectral functions.

Lepton pair production in heavy ion collisions and hadronic phenomenology

We first review the calculations of low invariant mass dilepton production in relativistic heavy ion collisions, using effective hadronic Lagrangians. We go through some of the theoretical techniques used in this kinematical region and we consider some of the appropriate experimental measurements. Moving up to the intermediate invariant mass region, we point out some of the uncertainties that show up in theoretical estimates. Those originate mainly from off-shell effects. Finally, as an application of hadronic chiral Lagrangians at finite temperature, we compute the mass shifts and mixing of the omega and phi mesons due to scattering from thermal pions.

Omega-Phi mixing at finite temperature

We compute the mass shifts and mixing of the Omega and Phi mesons at finite temperature due to scattering from thermal pions. The Rho and b_1 mesons are important intermediate states. Up to a temperature of 140 MeV the Omega mass increases by 12 MeV and the Phi mass decreases by 0.6 MeV. The change in mixing angles is negligible.

Higher excitations of $ω$ and $ϕ$ in dilepton spectra

We consider lepton pair production via two-hadron annihilation through various isoscalar vector mesons within hot, baryon-free matter. This is tantamount to constructing effective form factors which we model using a vector-meson-dominance approach and compare with experiment. In particular, we consider the reactions $πρ\to e^+e^-$ and $\bar K K^{*}(892)$ + c.c. $\to e^+e^-$. We find that $ω(1390)$ and $ϕ(1680)$ are visible in the mass spectrum for the thermal production rate above the $π^{+}π^{-} \to e^+e^-$ tail and even above the $πa_{1}\to e^+e^-$ results---both of which were considered important in their respective mass regions.

Measuring hadron properties at finite temperature

We estimate the numbers and mass spectra of observed lepton and kaon pairs produced from $ϕ$ meson decays in the central rapidity region of an Au+Au collision at lab energy 11.6 GeV/nucleon. The following effects are considered: possible mass shifts, thermal broadening due to collisions with hadronic resonances, and superheating of the resonance gas. Changes in the dilepton mass spectrum may be seen, but changes in the dikaon spectrum are too small to be detectable.

Another Look at ``soft'' lepton pair production in nucleon-nucleon bremsstrahlung

We compare different formalisms for the calculation of lepton pair emission in hadron-hadron collisions and discuss the consequences of the approximations inherent to each of them. Using a Lorentz-covariant and gauge-invariant formalism proposed by Lichard, we calculate lepton pair emission via bremsstrahlung in proton-proton and neutron-proton reactions at energies between 1 and 5 GeV to leading order in the virtual photon four-momentum. These new results suggest that some previous bremsstrahlung calculations based on varieties of the soft-photon approximation might have somewhat overestimated the DLS low-mass dilepton cross sections. We find that the respective intensities of dilepton production through $p p$ and $n p$ bremsstrahlung are energy-dependent and become comparable at $E_{\rm kin} \agt $ 2 GeV. We also calculate the polar angle anisotropy of the lepton spectrum.

Fragment Flow and the Nuclear Equation of State

We use the Boltzmann-Uehling-Uhlenbeck model with a momentum-dependent nuclear mean field to simulate the dynamical evolution of heavy ion collisions. We re-examine the azimuthal anisotropy observable, proposed as sensitive to the equation of state of nuclear matter. We obtain that this sensitivity is maximal when the azimuthal anisotropy is calculated for nuclear composite fragments, in agreement with some previous calculations. As a test case we concentrate on semi-central $^{197}{\rm Au}\ +\ ^{197}{\rm Au}$ collisions at 400 $A$ MeV.

Probing quark gluon plasma with jets

We study multiple scatterings of jets on constituents of quark gluon plasma and introduce energy--energy correlations to quantify their effects. The effects from a longitudinally expanding plasma on medium as well as high energy jets are found to be significant at both RHIC and LHC energies. Because jets escape from the plasma long before the completion of mixed phase, these effects are free from complications of final state hadronic interactions and decays. These suggest that jets can be used to probe the plasma that might be created in future high energy heavy ion collisions.

Momentum--dependent nuclear mean fields and collective flow in heavy ion collisions

We use the Boltzmann-Uehling-Uhlenbeck model to simulate the dynamical evolution of heavy ion collisions and to compare the effects of two parametrizations of the momentum--dependent nuclear mean field that have identical properties in cold nuclear matter. We compare with recent data on nuclear flow, as characterized by transverse momentum distributions and flow ($F$) variables for symmetric and asymmetric systems. We find that the precise functional dependence of the nuclear mean field on the particle momentum is important. With our approach, we also confirm that the difference between symmetric and asymmetric systems can be used to pin down the density and momentum dependence of the nuclear self consistent one--body potential, independently. All the data can be reproduced very well with a momentum--dependent interaction with compressibility K = 210 MeV.

Role of the $a_1$ meson in dilepton production from hot hadronic matter

Dilepton production from hot hadronic matter is studied in an effective chiral Lagrangian with pions, $ρ$-mesons, and $a_1$ mesons, We find that the production rates from reactions that involve axial-vector mesons dominate over contributions from all other reactions when the dilepton invariant mass is above 1.5 GeV.
