Direct demonstration of time-reversal-symmetry-breaking spin injection from a compensated magnet

The injection, propagation and detection of spin currents are essential physical processes in spintronics. So far, the separation of charge and spin currents was facilitated by the electrical spin injection from a ferromagnet (FM) or the injection by a relativistic spin Hall effect. The devices employed are lateral spin valves comprising spatially separated injection and detection electrodes, connected by a spin-propagation channel. The time-reversal symmetry (TRS) breaking FM spin injection is realized in a geometry with an electrical bias applied between the injection electrode and the channel and is modelled by a conserved spin-polarized drift current. In contrast, the spin injection by the T-symmetric relativistic spin Hall mechanism is driven by an electrical bias applied across the injection electrode alone, and is modelled by a non-conserved spin current transverse to the applied bias. In this work, we use a lateral spin valve with a Mn5Si3 injection electrode to directly demonstrate a TRS-breaking spin injection from a compensated magnet with a vanishing net magnetization. Specifically, the TRS-breaking is demonstrated by the fact that switching between time-reversed states of the compensated magnet changes the detected spin signal. Moreover, the TRS-breaking nature of the spin injection is observed in both experimental geometries with the different electrical biasing, while using the same detection electrode. We show that this unconventional spin-injection is consistent with different magnitudes and propagation angles of electrical currents in the spin-up and spin-down channel in a d-wave altermagnet. Here our symmetry analysis and first-principles calculations are based on the compensated collinear altermagnetic order which has provided a comprehensive microscopic interpretation of earlier structural, magnetic, and anomalous Hall and Nernst measurements in Mn5Si3 thin films.

Nanocontact vortex oscillators based on Co$_2$MnGe pseudo-spin valves

We present an experimental study of vortex dynamics in magnetic nanocontacts based on pseudo spin valves comprising the Co$_2$MnGe Heusler compound. The films were grown by molecular beam epitaxy, where precise stoichiometry control and tailored stacking order allowed us to define the bottom ferromagnetic layer as the reference layer, with minimal coupling between the free and reference layers. 20-nm diameter nanocontacts were fabricated using a nano-indentation technique, leading to self-sustained gyration of the vortex generated by spin-transfer torques above a certain current threshold. By combining frequency- and time-domain measurements, we show that different types of spin-transfer induced dynamics related to different modes associated to the magnetic vortex configuration can be observed, such as mode hopping, mode coexistence and mode extinction appear in addition to the usual gyration mode.

Large-area van der Waals epitaxy and magnetic characterization of Fe$_3$GeTe$_2$ films on graphene

Scalable fabrication of magnetic 2D materials and heterostructures constitutes a crucial step for scaling down current spintronic devices and the development of novel spintronic applications. Here, we report on van der Waals (vdW) epitaxy of the layered magnetic metal Fe$_3$GeTe$_2$ - a 2D crystal with highly tunable properties and a high prospect for room temperature ferromagnetism - directly on graphene by employing molecular beam epitaxy. Morphological and structural characterization confirmed the realization of large-area, continuous Fe$_3$GeTe$_2$/graphene heterostructure films with stable interfaces and good crystalline quality. Furthermore, magneto-transport and X-ray magnetic circular dichroism investigations confirmed a robust out-of-plane ferromagnetism in the layers, comparable to state-of-the-art exfoliated flakes from bulk crystals. These results are highly relevant for further research on wafer-scale growth of vdW heterostructures combining Fe$_3$GeTe$_2$ with other layered crystals such as transition metal dichalcogenides for the realization of multifunctional, atomically thin devices.

Epitaxial Heusler Superlattice Co2MnAl/Fe2MnAl with Perpendicular Magnetic Anisotropy and Termination-Dependent Half-Metallicity

Single-crystal Heusler atomic-scale superlattices that have been predicted to exhibit perpendicular magnetic anisotropy and half-metallicity have been successfully grown by molecular beam epitaxy. Superlattices consisting of full-Heusler Co$_2$MnAl and Fe$_2$MnAl with one to three unit cell periodicity were grown on GaAs (001), MgO (001), and Cr (001)/MgO (001). Electron energy loss spectroscopy maps confirmed clearly segregated epitaxial Heusler layers with high cobalt or high iron concentrations for samples grown near room temperature on GaAs (001). Superlattice structures grown with an excess of aluminum had significantly lower thin film shape anisotropy and resulted in an out-of-plane spin reorientation transition at temperatures below 200 K for samples grown on GaAs (001). Synchrotron-based spin resolved photoemission spectroscopy found that the superlattice structure improves the Fermi level spin polarization near the X point in the bulk Brillouin zone. Stoichiometric Co$_2$MnAl terminated superlattice grown on MgO (001) had a spin polarization of 95%, while a pure Co$_2$MnAl film had a spin polarization of only 65%.
