Dilatancy transition in a granular model

We introduce a model of granular matter and use a stress ensemble to analyze shearing. Monte Carlo simulation shows the model to exhibit a second order phase transition, associated with the onset of dilatancy.

The characterization of ground states

We consider limits of equilibrium distributions as temperature approaches zero, for systems of infinitely many particles, and characterize the support of the limiting distributions. Such results are known for particles with positions on a fixed lattice; we extend these results to systems of particles on R^n, with restrictions on the interaction.

Layering in Crumpled Sheets

We introduce a toy model of crumpled sheets. We use simulation to show there is a first order phase transition in the model, from a disordered dilute phase to a mixture with a layered phase.

Modelling quasicrystals at positive temperature

We consider a two-dimensional lattice model of equilibrium statistical mechanics, using nearest neighbor interactions based on the matching conditions for an aperiodic set of 16 Wang tiles. This model has uncountably many ground state configurations, all of which are nonperiodic. The question addressed in this paper is whether nonperiodicity persists at low but positive temperature. We present arguments, mostly numerical, that this is indeed the case. In particular, we define an appropriate order parameter, prove that it is identically zero at high temperatures, and show by Monte Carlo simulation that it is nonzero at low temperatures.

Random Loose Packing in Granular Matter

We introduce and simulate a two dimensional probabilistic model of granular matter at vanishing pressure. The model exhibits a perfectly sharp random loose packing density, a phenomenon that should be verifiable for real granular matter.

Random close packing of granular matter

We propose an interpretation of the random close packing of granular materials as a phase transition, and discuss the possibility of experimental verification.

Phase transition in a static granular system

We find that a column of glass beads exhibits a well-defined transition between two phases that differ in their resistance to shear. Pulses of fluidization are used to prepare static states with well-defined particle volume fractions $ϕ$ in the range 0.57-0.63. The resistance to shear is determined by slowly inserting a rod into the column of beads. The transition occurs at $ϕ=0.60$ for a range of speeds of the rod.

A Solidification Phenomenon in Random Packings

We prove that uniformly random packings of copies of a certain simply-connected figure in the plane exhibit global connectedness at all sufficiently high densities, but not at low densities.

Most stable structure for hard spheres

The hard sphere model is known to show a liquid-solid phase transition, with the solid expected to be either face centered cubic or hexagonal close packed. The difference in free energy between the two structures is very small and various attempts have been made to determine which one is the more stable. We contrast the different approaches and extend one.

The structure of the hard sphere solid

We show that near densest-packing the perturbations of the HCP structure yield higher entropy than perturbations of any other densest packing. The difference between the various structures shows up in the correlations between motions of nearest neighbors. In the HCP structure random motion of each sphere impinges slightly less on the motion of its nearest neighbors than in the other structures.

Optimally dense packings of hyperbolic space

In previous work a probabilistic approach to controlling difficulties of density in hyperbolic space led to a workable notion of optimal density for packings of bodies. In this paper we extend an ergodic theorem of Nevo to provide an appropriate definition of optimal dense packings. Examples are given to illustrate various aspects of the density problem, in particular the shift in emphasis from the analysis of individual packings to spaces of packings.

A Homeomorphism Invariant for Substitution Tiling Spaces

We derive a homeomorphism invariant for those tiling spaces which are made by rather general substitution rules on polygonal tiles, including those tilings, like the pinwheel, which contain tiles in infinitely many orientations. The invariant is a quotient of Cech cohomology, is easily computed directly from the substitution rule, and distinguishes many examples, including most pinwheel-like tiling spaces. We also introduce a module structure on cohomology which is very convenient as well as of intuitive value.

On Angles Whose Squared Trigonometric Functions are Rational

We consider the rational linear relations between real numbers whose squared trigonometric functions have rational values, angles we call ``geodetic''. We construct a convenient basis for the vector space over Q generated by these angles. Geodetic angles and rational linear combinations of geodetic angles appear naturally in Euclidean geometry; for illustration we apply our results to equidecomposability of polyhedra.

An Algebraic Invariant for Substitution Tiling Systems

We consider tilings of Euclidean spaces by polygons or polyhedra, in particular, tilings made by a substitution process, such as the Penrose tilings of the plane. We define an isomorphism invariant related to a subgroup of rotations and compute it for various examples. We also extend our analysis to more general dynamical systems.

Subgroups of SO(3) Associated with Tilings

We give a thorough analysis of those subgroups of SO(3) generated by rotations about perpendicular axes by 2π/p and 2π/q. A corollary is that such a group is the free product of the cyclic groups of rotations about the separate axes if and only if p,q\ge 3 and are both odd. These groups are naturally associated with a family of hierarchical tilings of Euclidean 3-space.

Symmetry of tilings of the plane

We discuss two new results on tilings of the plane. In the first, we give sufficient conditions for the tilings associated with an inflation rule to be uniquely ergodic under translations, the conditions holding for the pinwheel inflation rule. In the second result we prove there are matching rules for the pinwheel inflation rule, making the system the first known to have complete rotational symmetry.
