Uniqueness theorems for combinatorial C*-algebras

Spielberg's construction of C*-algebras from left cancellative small categories is a common generalization for most C*-algebras one would consider to come from ``combinatorial data,'' including graph and $k$-graph C*-algebras, Li's semigroup C*-algebras, Nekrashevych's self-similar action algebras, and more. We use known groupoid models of these algebras and Exel's theory of tight representations of inverse semigroups to prove uniqueness theorems for these C*-algebras. As applications, we improve on our previous uniqueness theorem for the boundary quotient C*-algebras of right LCM monoids, and we also generalize the uniqueness theorem of Brown, Nagy, and Reznikoff for row-finite higher-rank graphs to the finitely aligned case.

The action of an inverse semigroup on its Stone-\v{C}ech compactification

We initiate the study of the Stone-\v{C}ech transformation groupoid $\mathcal{G} = \mathcal{S}\ltimes\beta\mathcal{S}$ of an inverse semigroup $\mathcal{S}$. We prove that the properties of being Hausdorff, principal, and effective are all equivalent for $\mathcal{G}$, and give an algebraic condition on $\mathcal{S}$ equivalent to the Hausdorffness of $\mathcal{G}$. We show that the Hausdorffness of Exel's tight groupoid $\mathcal{G}_{\text{tight}}(\mathcal{S})$ is necessary for the Hausdorffness of $\mathcal{G}$. Finally, we clarify the connection between several crossed product constructions involving this groupoid, and show that when it is Hausdorff and $\mathcal{S}$ has the Property (FL) of Lled\'o and Mart\'inez, then $\mathcal{G}$ is amenable if and only if the reduced C$^*$-algebra $\text{C}^*_r(\mathcal{S})$ is exact.

Inverse semigroups associated to subshifts

The dynamics of a one-sided subshift $\mathsf{X}$ can be modeled by a set of partially defined bijections. From this data we define an inverse semigroup $\mathcal{S}_{\mathsf{X}}$ and show that it has many interesting properties. We prove that the Carlsen-Matsumoto C*-algebra $\mathcal{O}_\mathsf{X}$ associated to $\mathsf{X}$ is canonically isomorphic to Exel's tight C*-algebra of $\mathcal{S}_{\mathsf{X}}$. As one consequence, we obtain that $\mathcal{O}_\mathsf{X}$ can be written as a partial crossed product of a commutative C*-algebra by a countable group.

A new uniqueness theorem for the tight C*-algebra of an inverse semigroup

We prove a new uniqueness theorem for the tight C*-algebras of an inverse semigroup by generalizing the uniqueness theorem given for étale groupoid C*-algebras by Brown, Nagy, Reznikoff, Sims, and Williams. We use this to show that in the nuclear and Hausdorff case, a *-homomorphism from the boundary quotient C*-algebra of a right LCM monoid is injective if and only if it is injective on the subalgebra generated by the core submonoid. We also use our result to clarify the identity of the tight C*-algebra of an inverse semigroup we previously associated to a subshift and erroneously identified as the Carlsen-Matsumoto algebra.

C*-algebras from partial isometric representations of LCM semigroups

We give a new construction of a C*-algebra from a cancellative semigroup $P$ via partial isometric representations, generalising the construction from the second named author's thesis. We then study our construction in detail for the special case when $P$ is an LCM semigroup. In this case we realize our algebras as inverse semigroup algebras and groupoid algebras, and apply our construction to free semigroups and Zappa-Szép products associated to self-similar groups.

Simplicity of algebras associated to non-Hausdorff groupoids

We prove a uniqueness theorem and give a characterization of simplicity for Steinberg algebras associated to non-Hausdorff ample groupoids. We also prove a uniqueness theorem and give a characterization of simplicity for the C*-algebra associated to non-Hausdorff étale groupoids. Then we show how our results apply in the setting of tight representations of inverse semigroups, groups acting on graphs, and self-similar actions. In particular, we show that C*-algebra and the complex Steinberg algebra of the self-similar action of the Grigorchuk group are simple but the Steinberg algebra with coefficients in $\mathbb{Z}_2$ is not simple.

Hausdorff Tight Groupoids Generalised

We extend Exel's ample tight groupoid construction to general locally compact étale groupoids in the Hausdorff case. Moreover, we show how inverse semigroups are represented in this way as 'pseudobases' of open bisections, thus yielding a duality which encompasses various extensions of the classic Stone duality.

$C^*$-algebras of self-similar graphs over arbitrary graphs

In this note we extend the construction of a $C^*$-algebra associated to a self-similar graph to the case of arbitrary countable graphs. We reduce the problem to the row-finite case with no sources, by using a desingularization process. Finally, we characterize simplicity in this case.

General Non-Commutative Locally Compact Locally Hausdorff Stone Duality

We extend the classical Stone duality between zero dimensional compact Hausdorff spaces and Boolean algebras. Specifically, we simultaneously remove the zero dimensionality restriction and extend to étale groupoids, obtaining a duality with an elementary class of inverse semigroups.

Inverse semigroup shifts over countable alphabets

In this work we characterize shift spaces over infinite countable alphabets that can be endowed with an inverse semigroup operation. We give sufficient conditions under which zero-dimensional inverse semigroups can be recoded as shift spaces whose correspondent inverse semigroup operation is a 1-block operation, that is, it arises from a group operation on the alphabet. Motivated by this, we go on to study block operations on shift spaces and, in the end, we prove our main theorem, which states that Markovian shift spaces, which can be endowed with a 1-block inverse semigroup operation, are conjugate to the product of a full shift with a fractal shift.

Sliding block codes between shift spaces over infinite alphabets

Recently Ott, Tomforde and Willis introduced a notion of one-sided shifts over infinite alphabets and proposed a definition for sliding block codes between such shift spaces. In this work we propose a more general definition for sliding block codes between Ott-Tomforde-Willis shift spaces and then we prove Curtis-Hedlund-Lyndon type theorems for them, finding sufficient and necessary conditions under which the class of the sliding block codes coincides with the class of continuous shift-commuting maps.

Two-sided shift spaces over infinite alphabets

Ott, Tomforde, and Willis proposed a useful compactification for one-sided shifts over infinite alphabets. Building from their idea we develop a notion of two-sided shift spaces over infinite alphabets, with an eye towards generalizing a result of Kitchens. As with the one-sided shifts over infinite alphabets our shift spaces are compact Hausdorff spaces but, in contrast to the one-sided setting, our shift map is continuous everywhere. We show that many of the classical results from symbolic dynamics are still true for our two-sided shift spaces. In particular, while for one-sided shifts the problem about whether or not any $M$-step shift is conjugate to an edge shift space is open, for two-sided shifts we can give a positive answer for this question.

Bratteli-Vershik models for partial actions of $\mathbb{Z}$

Let $U$ and $V$ be open subsets of the Cantor set with finite disjoint complements, and let $h:U\to V$ be a homeomorphism with dense orbits. Building from the ideas of Herman, Putnam, and Skau, we show that the partial action induced by $h$ can be realized as the Vershik map on a Bratteli diagram, and that any two such diagrams are equivalent.

Locally Compact Stone Duality

We prove a number of dualities between posets and (pseudo)bases of open sets in locally compact Hausdorff spaces. In particular, we show that (1) Relatively compact basic sublattices are finitely axiomatizable. (2) Relatively compact basic subsemilattices are those omitting certain types. (3) Compact clopen pseudobasic posets are characterized by separativity. We also show how to obtain the tight spectrum of a poset as the Stone space of a generalized Boolean algebra that is universal for tight representations.

C*-algebras of Boolean inverse monoids - traces and invariant means

To a Boolean inverse monoid $S$ we associate a universal C*-algebra $C_B^*(S)$ and show that it is equal to Exel's tight C*-algebra of $S$. We then show that any invariant mean on $S$ (in the sense of Kudryavtseva, Lawson, Lenz and Resende) gives rise to a trace on $C_B^*(S)$, and vice-versa, under a condition on $S$ equivalent to the underlying groupoid being Hausdorff. Under certain mild conditions, the space of traces of $C_B^*(S)$ is shown to be isomorphic to the space of invariant means of $S$. We then use many known results about traces of C*-algebras to draw conclusions about invariant means on Boolean inverse monoids; in particular we quote a result of Blackadar to show that any metrizable Choquet simplex arises as the space of invariant means for some AF inverse monoid $S$.

Amenable actions of inverse semigroups

We say that an action of a countable discrete inverse semigroup on a locally compact Hausdorff space is amenable if its groupoid of germs is amenable in the sense of Anantharaman-Delaroche and Renault. We then show that for a given inverse semigroup $S$, the action of $S$ on its spectrum is amenable if and only if every action of $S$ is amenable.
