Slow ferromagnetic fluctuations in the kagome metal Sc$_3$Mn$_3$Al$_7$Si$_5$ revealed by $^{27}$Al NMR

Static and dynamical magnetic and electronic properties of the kagome metal Sc$_3$Mn$_3$Al$_7$Si$_5$ have been investigated by $^{27}$Al nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements. The temperature dependence of Knight shift ($K$) shows a similar temperature dependence of the DC magnetic susceptibility $\chi$ except for the low-temperature region below $\sim$ 50 K where $K$ is almost constant while $\chi$ keeps increasing, which suggests that the increase in $\chi$ at low temperatures is not intrinsic. $^{27}$Al spin-lattice relaxation rate divided by temperature ($1/T_1T$) is found to be constant, confirming the metallic state of Sc$_3$Mn$_3$Al$_7$Si$_5$ from a microscopic point of view. Based on a Korringa ratio analysis using the $T_1$ and $K$ data, ferromagnetic spin fluctuations are found to dominate in Sc$_3$Mn$_3$Al$_7$Si$_5$. These fluctuations are suggested to be very slow with frequencies on the order of kilohertz or lower.

Experimental Safe Extremum Seeking for Accelerators

We demonstrate the recent designs of Safe Extremum Seeking (Safe ES) on the 1 kilometer-long charged particle accelerator at the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center (LANSCE). Safe ES is a modification of ES which, in addition to minimizing an analytically unknown cost, also employs a safety filter based on an analytically unknown control barrier function (CBF) safety metric. Accelerator tuning is necessitated by the accelerators being large, with many drifting parameters due to thermal effects and degradation. At the same time, safe operation (the maintenance of state constraints) is crucial, as damage brings astronomical costs, both financially and in operation downtime. Our measured (but analytically unknown) safety metric is the beam current. We perform multivariable Safe ES on three accelerator applications, in which we adapt 4, 6, and 3 magnet strength parameters, respectively. Two of the three applications are for validated simulation models of beamlines at LANSCE: the first for the Proton Radiography (pRad) beamline of 800 MeV protons for spot size tuning; the second on a high performance code, HPSim, for tuning the low energy beam transport (LEBT) region of of 750 keV protons. The third is an experimental tuning of the steering magnets in the LEBT at LANSCE.

The joint node degree distribution in the Erd\H{o}s-R\'enyi network

The Erd\H{o}s-R\'enyi random graph is the simplest model for node degree distribution, and it is one of the most widely studied. In this model, pairs of $n$ vertices are selected and connected uniformly at random with probability $p$, consequently, the degrees for a given vertex follow the binomial distribution. If the number of vertices is large, the binomial can be approximated by Normal using the Central Limit Theorem, which is often allowed when $\min (np, n(1-p)) > 5$. This is true for every node independently. However, due to the fact that the degrees of nodes in a graph are not independent, we aim in this paper to test whether the degrees of per node collectively in the Erd\H{o}s-R\'enyi graph have a multivariate normal distribution MVN. A chi square goodness of fit test for the hypothesis that binomial is a distribution for the whole set of nodes is rejected because of the dependence between degrees. Before testing MVN we show that the covariance and correlation between the degrees of any pair of nodes in the graph are $p(1-p)$ and $1/(n-1)$, respectively. We test MVN considering two assumptions: independent and dependent degrees, and we obtain our results based on the percentages of rejected statistics of chi square, the $p$-values of Anderson Darling test, and a CDF comparison. We always achieve a good fit of multivariate normal distribution with large values of $n$ and $p$, and very poor fit when $n$ or $p$ are very small. The approximation seems valid when $np \geq 10$. We also compare the maximum likelihood estimate of $p$ in MVN distribution where we assume independence and dependence. The estimators are assessed using bias, variance and mean square error.

Bayesian CART models for insurance claims frequency

Accuracy and interpretability of a (non-life) insurance pricing model are essential qualities to ensure fair and transparent premiums for policy-holders, that reflect their risk. In recent years, the classification and regression trees (CARTs) and their ensembles have gained popularity in the actuarial literature, since they offer good prediction performance and are relatively easily interpretable. In this paper, we introduce Bayesian CART models for insurance pricing, with a particular focus on claims frequency modelling. Additionally to the common Poisson and negative binomial (NB) distributions used for claims frequency, we implement Bayesian CART for the zero-inflated Poisson (ZIP) distribution to address the difficulty arising from the imbalanced insurance claims data. To this end, we introduce a general MCMC algorithm using data augmentation methods for posterior tree exploration. We also introduce the deviance information criterion (DIC) for the tree model selection. The proposed models are able to identify trees which can better classify the policy-holders into risk groups. Some simulations and real insurance data will be discussed to illustrate the applicability of these models.

Morphology-based non-rigid registration of coronary computed tomography and intravascular images through virtual catheter path optimization

Coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA) provides 3D information on obstructive coronary artery disease, but cannot fully visualize high-resolution features within the vessel wall. Intravascular imaging, in contrast, can spatially resolve atherosclerotic in cross sectional slices, but is limited in capturing 3D relationships between each slice. Co-registering CCTA and intravascular images enables a variety of clinical research applications but is time consuming and user-dependent. This is due to intravascular images suffering from non-rigid distortions arising from irregularities in the imaging catheter path. To address these issues, we present a morphology-based framework for the rigid and non-rigid matching of intravascular images to CCTA images. To do this, we find the optimal virtual catheter path that samples the coronary artery in CCTA image space to recapitulate the coronary artery morphology observed in the intravascular image. We validate our framework on a multi-center cohort of 40 patients using bifurcation landmarks as ground truth for longitudinal and rotational registration. Our registration approach significantly outperforms other approaches for bifurcation alignment. By providing a differentiable framework for multi-modal vascular co-registration, our framework reduces the manual effort required to conduct large-scale multi-modal clinical studies and enables the development of machine learning-based co-registration approaches.

Local integrands for the five-point amplitude in planar N=4 SYM up to five loops

Integrands for colour ordered scattering amplitudes in planar N=4 SYM are dual to those of correlation functions of the energy-momentum multiplet of the theory. The construction can relate amplitudes with different numbers of legs. By graph theory methods the integrand of the four-point function of energy-momentum multiplets has been constructed up to six loops in previous work. In this article we extend this analysis to seven loops and use it to construct the full integrand of the five-point amplitude up to five loops, and in the parity even sector to six loops. All results, both parity even and parity odd, are obtained in a concise local form in dual momentum space and can be displayed efficiently through graphs. We have verified agreement with other local formulae both in terms of supertwistors and scalar momentum integrals as well as BCJ forms where those exist in the literature, i.e. up to three loops. Finally we note that the four-point correlation function can be extracted directly from the four-point amplitude and so this uncovers a direct link from four- to five-point amplitudes.
