Zero-cycles on double EPW sextics

The Chow rings of hyperKähler varieties are conjectured to have a particularly rich structure. In this paper, we focus on the locally complete family of double EPW sextics and establish some properties of their Chow rings. First we prove a Beauville-Voisin type theorem for zero-cycles on double EPW sextics; precisely, we show that the codimension-4 part of the subring of the Chow ring of a double EPW sextic generated by divisors, the Chern classes and codimension-2 cycles invariant under the anti-symplectic covering involution has rank one. Second, for double EPW sextics birational to the Hilbert square of a K3 surface, we show that the action of the anti-symplectic involution on the Chow group of zero-cycles commutes with the Fourier decomposition of Shen-Vial.

Normal functions for algebraically trivial cycles are algebraic for arithmetic reasons

For families of smooth complex projective varieties we show that normal functions arising from algebraically trivial cycle classes are algebraic, and defined over the field of definition of the family. In particular, the zero loci of those functions are algebraic and defined over such a field of definition. This proves a conjecture of Charles.

Parameter spaces for algebraic equivalence

A cycle is algebraically trivial if it can be exhibited as the difference of two fibers in a family of cycles parameterized by a smooth scheme. Over an algebraically closed field, it is a result of Weil that it suffices to consider families of cycles parameterized by curves, or by abelian varieties. In this paper, we extend these results to arbitrary base fields. The strengthening of these results turns out to be a key step in our work elsewhere extending Murre's results on algebraic representatives for varieties over algebraically closed fields to arbitrary perfect fields.

Generic cycles, Lefschetz representations, and the generalized Hodge and Bloch conjectures for abelian varieties

We prove Bloch's conjecture for correspondences on powers of complex abelian varieties, that are "generically defined". As an application we establish vanishing results for (skew-)symmetric cycles on powers of abelian varieties and we address a question of Voisin concerning (skew-)symmetric cycles on powers of K3 surfaces in the case of Kummer surfaces. We also prove Bloch's conjecture in the following situation. Let $γ$ be a correspondence between two abelian varieties $A$ and $B$ that can be written as a linear combination of products of symmetric divisors. Assume that $A$ is isogenous to the product of an abelian variety of totally real type with the power of an abelian surface. We show that $γ$ satisfies the conclusion of Bloch's conjecture. A key ingredient consists in establishing a strong form of the generalized Hodge conjecture for Hodge sub-structures of the cohomology of $A$ that arise as sub-representations of the Lefschetz group of $A$. As a by-product of our method, we use a strong form of the generalized Hodge conjecture established for powers of abelian surfaces to show that every finite-order symplectic automorphism of a generalized Kummer variety acts as the identity on the zero-cycles.

Distinguished cycles on varieties with motive of abelian type and the Section Property

A remarkable result of Peter O'Sullivan asserts that the algebra epimorphism from the rational Chow ring of an abelian variety to its rational Chow ring modulo numerical equivalence admits a (canonical) section. Motivated by Beauville's splitting principle, we formulate a conjectural Section Property which predicts that for smooth projective holomorphic symplectic varieties there exists such a section of algebra whose image contains all the Chern classes of the variety. In this paper, we investigate this property for (not necessarily symplectic) varieties with Chow motive of abelian type. We introduce the notion of symmetrically distinguished abelian motive and use it to provide a sufficient condition for a smooth projective variety to admit such a section. We then give series of examples of varieties for which our theory works. For instance, we prove the existence of such a section for arbitrary products of varieties with Chow groups of finite rank, abelian varieties, hyperelliptic curves, Fermat cubic hypersurfaces, Hilbert schemes of points on an abelian surface or a Kummer surface or a K3 surface with Picard number at least 19, and generalized Kummer varieties. The latter cases provide evidence for the conjectural Section Property and exemplify the mantra that the motives of holomorphic symplectic varieties should behave as the motives of abelian varieties, as algebra objects.

On the Chow ring of Cynk-Hulek Calabi-Yau varieties and Schreieder varieties

This note is about certain locally complete families of Calabi-Yau varieties constructed by Cynk and Hulek, and certain varieties constructed by Schreieder. We prove that the cycle class map on the Chow ring of powers of these varieties admits a section, and that these varieties admit a multiplicative self-dual Chow-Kuenneth decomposition. As a consequence of both results, we prove that the subring of the Chow ring generated by divisors, Chern classes, and intersections of two cycles of positive codimension injects into cohomology, via the cycle class map. We also prove that the small diagonal of Schreieder surfaces admits a decomposition similar to that of K3 surfaces. As a by-product of our main result, we verify a conjecture of Voisin concerning zero-cycles on the self-product of Cynk-Hulek Calabi-Yau varieties, and in the odd-dimensional case we verify a conjecture of Voevodsky concerning smash-equivalence. Finally, in positive characteristic, we show that the supersingular Cynk-Hulek Calabi-Yau varieties provide examples of Calabi-Yau varieties with "degenerate" motive.

The generalized Franchetta conjecture for some hyper-Kähler varieties

The generalized Franchetta conjecture for hyper-Kähler varieties predicts that an algebraic cycle on the universal family of certain polarized hyper-Kähler varieties is fiberwise rationally equivalent to zero if and only if it vanishes in cohomology fiberwise. We establish Franchetta-type results for certain low (Hilbert) powers of low degree K3 surfaces, for the Beauville--Donagi family of Fano varieties of lines on cubic fourfolds and its relative square, and for $0$-cycles and codimension-$2$ cycles for the Lehn--Lehn--Sorger--van Straten family of hyper-Kähler eightfolds. We also draw many consequences in the direction of the Beauville--Voisin conjecture as well as Voisin's refinement involving coisotropic subvarieties. In the appendix, we establish a new relation among tautological cycles on the square of the Fano variety of lines of a smooth cubic fourfold and provide some applications.

Motivic HyperKähler Resolution Conjecture : I. Generalized Kummer varieties

Given a smooth projective variety $M$ endowed with a faithful action of a finite group $G$, following Jarvis-Kaufmann-Kimura and Fantechi-Göttsche, we define the orbifold motive (or Chen-Ruan motive) of the quotient stack $[M/G]$ as an algebra object in the category of Chow motives. Inspired by Ruan, one can formulate a motivic version of his Cohomological HyperKähler Resolution Conjecture. We prove this motivic version, as well as its K-theoretic analogue conjectured by Jarvis-Kaufmann-Kimura, in two situations related to an abelian surface $A$ and a positive integer $n$. Case (A) concerns Hilbert schemes of points of $A$ : the Chow motive of $A^{[n]}$ is isomorphic as algebra objects, up to a suitable sign change, to the orbifold motive of the quotient stack $[A^{n}/\mathfrak{S}_{n}]$. Case (B) for generalized Kummer varieties : the Chow motive of the generalized Kummer variety $K_n(A)$ is isomorphic as algebra objects, up to a suitable sign change, to the orbifold motive of the quotient stack $[A_{0}^{n+1}/\mathfrak {S}_{n+1}]$, where $A_{0}^{n+1}$ is the kernel abelian variety of the summation map $A^{n+1}\to A$. As a byproduct, we prove the original Cohomological HyperKähler Resolution Conjecture for generalized Kummer varieties. As an application, we provide multiplicative Chow-Künneth decompositions for Hilbert schemes of abelian surfaces and for generalized Kummer varieties. In particular, we have a multiplicative direct sum decomposition of their Chow rings with rational coefficients, which is expected to be the splitting of the conjectural Bloch-Beilinson-Murre filtration. The existence of such a splitting for holomorphic symplectic varieties is conjectured by Beauville.

Derived equivalent threefolds, algebraic representatives, and the coniveau filtration

A conjecture of Orlov predicts that derived equivalent smooth projective varieties over a field have isomorphic Chow motives. The conjecture is known for curves, and was recently observed for surfaces by Huybrechts. In this paper we focus on threefolds over perfect fields, and unconditionally secure results, which are implied by Orlov's conjecture, concerning the geometric coniveau filtration, and abelian varieties attached to smooth projective varieties.

Distinguished models of intermediate Jacobians

We show that the image of the Abel-Jacobi map admits functorially a model over the field of definition, with the property that the Abel-Jacobi map is equivariant with respect to this model. The cohomology of this abelian variety over the base field is isomorphic as a Galois representation to the deepest part of the coniveau filtration of the cohomology of the projective variety. Moreover, we show that this model over the base field is dominated by the Albanese variety of a product of components of the Hilbert scheme of the projective variety, and thus we answer a question of Mazur. We also recover a result of Deligne on complete intersections of Hodge level one.

Derived equivalence, Albanese varieties, and the zeta functions of 3-dimensional varieties

We show that any derived equivalent smooth, projective varieties of dimension 3 over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ have equal zeta functions. This result is an application of the extension to smooth, projective varieties over any field of Popa and Schnell's proof that derived equivalent smooth, projective varieties over $\mathbb{C}$ have isogenous Albanese torsors; this result is proven in an appendix by Achter, Casalaina-Martin, Honigs and Vial.

On descending cohomology geometrically

In this paper, motivated by a problem posed by Barry Mazur, we show that for smooth projective varieties over the rationals, the odd cohomology groups of degree less than or equal to the dimension can be modeled by the cohomology of an abelian variety, provided the geometric coniveau is maximal. This provides an affirmative answer to Mazur's question for all uni-ruled threefolds, for instance. Concerning cohomology in degree three, we show that the image of the Abel--Jacobi map admits a distinguished model over the rationals.

The motive of the Hilbert cube

The Hilbert scheme $X^{[3]}$ of length-$3$ subschemes of a smooth projective variety $X$ is known to be smooth and projective. We investigate whether the property of having a multiplicative Chow-Kuenneth decomposition is stable under taking the Hilbert cube. This is achieved by considering an explicit resolution of the map $X^3 \dashrightarrow X^{[3]}$. The case of the Hilbert square was taken care of in previous work of ours. The archetypical examples of varieties endowed with a multiplicative Chow-Kuenneth decomposition is given by abelian varieties. Recent work seems to suggest that hyperKaehler varieties share the same property. Roughly, if a smooth projective variety $X$ has a multiplicative Chow-Kuenneth decomposition, then the Chow rings of its powers $X^n$ have a filtration, which is the expected Bloch-Beilinson filtration, that is split.

Exceptional collections, and the Neron-Severi lattice for surfaces

We work out properties of smooth projective varieties over a (not necessarily algebraically closed) field that admit collections of objects in the bounded derived category of coherent sheaves that are either full exceptional, or numerically exceptional of maximal length. Our main result gives a necessary and sufficient condition on the Neron-Severi lattice for a smooth projective surface with holomorphic Euler characteristic 1 to admit a numerically exceptional collection of maximal length, consisting of line-bundles. As a consequence we determine exactly which complex surfaces with vanishing irregularity and geometric genus admit a numerically exceptional collection of maximal length. Another consequence is that a minimal geometrically rational surface with a numerically exceptional collection of maximal length is rational.

Remarks on motives of abelian type

A motive over a field $k$ is of abelian type if it belongs to the thick and rigid subcategory of Chow motives spanned by the motives of abelian varieties over $k$. This paper contains three sections of independent interest. First, we show that a motive which becomes of abelian type after a base field extension of algebraically closed fields is of abelian type. Given a field extension $K/k$ and a motive $M$ over $k$, we also show that $M$ is finite-dimensional if and only if $M_K$ is finite-dimensional. As a corollary, we obtain Chow--Kuenneth decompositions for varieties that become isomorphic to an abelian variety after some field extension. Second, let $Ω$ be a universal domain containing $k$. We show that Murre's conjectures for motives of abelian type over $k$ reduce to Murre's conjecture (D) for products of curves over $Ω$. In particular, we show that Murre's conjecture (D) for products of curves over $Ω$ implies Beauville's vanishing conjecture on abelian varieties over $k$. Finally, we give criteria on Chow groups for a motive to be of abelian type. For instance, we show that $M$ is of abelian type if and only if the total Chow group of algebraically trivial cycles $CH_*(M_Ω)_{alg}$ is spanned, via the action of correspondences, by the Chow groups of products of curves. We also show that a morphism of motives $f: N \to M$, with $N$ Kimura finite-dimensional, which induces a surjection $f_* : CH_*(N_Ω)_{alg} \to CH_*(M_Ω)_{alg}$ also induces a surjection $f_* : CH_*(N_Ω)_{hom} \to CH_*(M_Ω)_{hom}$ on homologically trivial cycles.

On the motive of some hyperKaehler varieties

We show that the motive of the Hilbert scheme of length-$n$ subschemes on a K3 surface or on an abelian surface admits a decomposition similar to the decomposition of the motive of an abelian variety obtained by Shermenev, Beauville, and Deninger and Murre.

The Fourier transform for certain hyperKaehler fourfolds

Using a codimension-$1$ algebraic cycle obtained from the Poincaré line bundle, Beauville defined the Fourier transform on the Chow groups of an abelian variety $A$ and showed that the Fourier transform induces a decomposition of the Chow ring $CH^*(A)$. By using a codimension-$2$ algebraic cycle representing the Beauville--Bogomolov class, we give evidence for the existence of a similar decomposition for the Chow ring of hyperKähler varieties deformation equivalent to the Hilbert scheme of length-$2$ subschemes on a K3 surface. We indeed establish the existence of such a decomposition for the Hilbert scheme of length-$2$ subschemes on a K3 surface and for the variety of lines on a very general cubic fourfold.

Algebraic cycles and fibrations

Let $f : X -> B$ be a projective surjective morphism between quasi-projective varieties. The goal of this paper is the study of the Chow groups of $X$ in terms of the Chow groups of $B$ and of the fibers of $f$. One of the applications concerns quadric bundles. When $X$ and $B$ are smooth projective and when $f$ is a flat quadric fibration, we show that the motive of $X$ is "built" from the motives of varieties of dimension less than the dimension of $B$.
