Tools for designing atom interferometers in a microgravity environment

We present a variational model suitable for rapid preliminary design of atom interferometers in a microgravity environment. The model approximates the solution of the 3D rotating--frame Gross--Pitaevskii equation (GPE) as the sum of Nc Gaussian clouds. Each Gaussian cloud is assumed to have time--dependent center positions, widths, and linear and quadratic phase parameters. We applied the Lagrangian Variational Method (LVM) with this trial wave function to derive equations of motion for these parameters that can be adapted to any external potential. We also present a 1D version of this variational model. As an example we apply the model to a 1D atom interferometry scheme for measuring Newton's gravitational constant, G, in a microgravity environment. We show how the LVM model can (1) constrain the experimental parameter space size, (2) show how the value of G can be obtained from the experimental conditions and interference pattern characteristics, and (3) show how to improve the sensitivity of the measurement and construct a preliminary error budget.

Dynamical quantum correlations of Ising models on an arbitrary lattice and their resilience to decoherence

Ising models, and the physical systems described by them, play a central role in generating entangled states for use in quantum metrology and quantum information. In particular, ultracold atomic gases, trapped ion systems, and Rydberg atoms realize long-ranged Ising models, which even in the absence of a transverse field can give rise to highly non-classical dynamics and long-range quantum correlations. In the first part of this paper, we present a detailed theoretical framework for studying the dynamics of such systems driven (at time t=0) into arbitrary unentangled non-equilibrium states, thus greatly extending and unifying the work of Ref. [1]. Specifically, we derive exact expressions for closed-time-path ordered correlation functions, and use these to study experimentally relevant observables, e.g. Bloch vector and spin-squeezing dynamics. In the second part, these correlation functions are then used to derive closed-form expressions for the dynamics of arbitrary spin-spin correlation functions in the presence of both T_1 (spontaneous spin relaxation/excitation) and T_2 (dephasing) type decoherence processes. Even though the decoherence is local, our solution reveals that the competition between Ising dynamics and T_1 decoherence gives rise to an emergent non-local dephasing effect, thereby drastically amplifying the degradation of quantum correlations. In addition to identifying the mechanism of this deleterious effect, our solution points toward a scheme to eliminate it via measurement-based coherent feedback.

Noise Correlations of Hard-core Bosons: Quantum Coherence and Symmetry Breaking

Noise correlations, such as those observable in the time of flight images of a released cloud, are calculated for hard-core bosonic (HCB) atoms. We find that the standard mapping of HCB systems onto spin-1/2 XY models fails in application to computation of noise correlations due to the contribution of multiply occupied virtual states in HCB systems. Such states do not exist in spin models. An interesting manifestation of such states is the breaking of particle-hole symmetry in HCB. We use noise correlations to explore quantum coherence of strongly correlated bosons in the fermionized regime with and without external parabolic confinement. Our analysis points to distinctive new experimental signatures of the Mott phase.

Noise Correlations and Quantum Coherence in Hard-core Bosons in One-dimensional Lattices

Noise correlations, such as those observable in the time of flight images of a released cloud, are calculated for hard-core bosonic (HCB) atoms. We find that the standard mapping of HCB systems onto spin-1/2 XY models fails in application to computation of noise correlations. This is due to the contribution of multiply occupied virtual states to noise correlations in bosonic systems. Such states do not exist in spin models. We use these correlations to explore quantum coherence of the ground states and re-address the relationship between the peaks present in noise correlation and the Mott phase. Our analysis points to distinctive new experimental signatures of the Mott phase. The importance of these correlations is illustrated in an example of a quasiperiodic potential that exhibits a localization transition. In this case, in contrast to the momentum distribution, the noise correlations reveal the presence of quasiperiodic order in the localized phase.

Quantum key distribution with 1.25 Gbps clock synchronization

We have demonstrated the exchange of sifted quantum cryptographic key over a 730 meter free-space link at rates of up to 1.0 Mbps, two orders of magnitude faster than previously reported results. A classical channel at 1550 nm operates in parallel with a quantum channel at 845 nm. Clock recovery techniques on the classical channel at 1.25 Gbps enable quantum transmission at up to the clock rate. System performance is currently limited by the timing resolution of our silicon avalanche photodiode detectors. With improved detector resolution, our technique will yield another order of magnitude increase in performance, with existing technology.
