In this paper, we classify smooth, contractible affine varieties equipped with faithful torus actions of complexity two, having a unique fixed point and a two-dimensional algebraic quotient isomorphic to a toric blow-up of a toric surface. These varieties are of particular interest as they represent the simplest candidates for potential counterexamples to the linearization conjecture in affine geometry.
We give an algebro-geometric classification of smooth real affine algebraic surfaces endowed with an effective action of the real algebraic circle group $\mathbb{S}^1$ up to equivariant isomorphisms. As an application, we show that every compact differentiable surface endowed with an action of the circle $S^1$ admits a unique smooth rational real quasi-projective model up to $\mathbb{S}^1$-equivariant birational diffeomorphism.
We introduce equivariant versions of uniform rationality: given an algebraic group G, a G-variety is called G-uniformly rational (resp. G-linearly uniformly rational) if every point has a G-invariant open neighborhood equivariantly isomorphic to a G-invariant open subset of the affine space endowed with a G-action (resp. linear G-action). We establish a criterion for Gm-uniform rationality of affine variety equipped with hyperbolic Gm-action with a unique fixed point, formulated in term of their Altmann-Hausen presentation. We prove the Gm-uniform rationality of Koras-Russel threefolds of the first kind and we also give example of non Gm-uniformly rational but smooth rational Gm-threefold associated to pairs of plane rational curves birationally non equivalent to a union of lines.
The aim of this note is to give an alternative proof of a theorem of Koras and Russell, that is, a characterization of smooth contractible affine varieties endowed with a hyperbolic action of the group $\mathbb{G}_{m}\simeq\mathbb{C}^{\text{*}}$, using the language of polyhedral divisors developed by Altmann and Hausen as generalization of $\mathbb{Q}$-divisors.
A smooth variety is called uniformly rational if every point admits a Zariski open neighborhood isomorphic to a Zariski open subset of the affine space. In this note we show that every smooth and rational affine variety endowed with an algebraic torus action such that the algebraic quotient has dimension 0 or 1 is uniformly rational.
In this paper we provide a characterization of smooth algebraic varieties endowed with a faithful algebraic torus action in terms of a combinatorial description given by Altmann and Hausen. Our main result is that such a variety X is smooth if and only if it is locally isomorphic in the étale topology to the affine space endowed with a linear torus action. Furthermore, this is the case if and only if the combinatorial data describing X is locally isomorphic in the étale topology to the combinatorial data describing affine space endowed with a linear torus action. Finally, we provide an effective method to check the smoothness of a Gm-threefold in terms of the combinatorial data.
We determine the automorphism groups of Koras-Russell threefolds of the second kind. In particular we show that these groups are semi-direct products of two subgroups, one given by the multiplicative group and the other isomorphic to a polynomial ring in two variables with the addition law. We also show that these groups are generated by algebraic subgroups isomorphic to Gm and Ga.
We consider normal affine T-varieties X endowed with an action of finite abelian group G commuting with the action of T. For such varieties we establish the existence of G-equivariant geometrico-combinatorial presentations in the sense of Altmann and Hausen. As an application, we determine explicit presentations of the Koras-Russell threefolds as bi-cyclic covers of A^3 equipped with a hyperbolic C^*-action.
