Leveraging von Mises Message-Passing for Massive MIMO Detection

Detection in massive multiple input multiple output (mMIMO) systems suffers from exponential complexity while using optimal decoders like maximum a posteriori (MAP). We propose a belief propagation-based detector based on directional statistics, applicable to mMIMO systems relying on PSK modulations. Thanks to a continuous relaxation of the PSK modulation to the unit circle, and to the use of von Mises parametric representations of the messages to obtain sparse representations of the (generally infinite dimensional) messages, the proposed method allows for approximate detection with a low complexity which does not depend on the PSK modulation order. Extensions of the algorithm to imperfect channel realizations are also present. We quantify the performance and complexity of the proposed approach and compare it with detection algorithms based on Gaussian approximation.

Tensor-Based Modulation on the Unit Circle: A Coding Perspective

Tensor-based modulation (TBM) provides a multi-linear spreading framework for blind multi-user separation in unsourced random access. In this paper, we show that TBM is a coded modulation built on a non-binary linear block code over $\mathbb{Z}_M$, whose symbols are mapped to $M$-PSK modulation, defining a geometrically uniform signal space code. We explicitly derive this generator matrix, characterize its rank deficiency, and show that reference symbols for tensor identifiability correspond to code shortening, producing a quasi-systematic or a systematic code, depending on the number of considered reference symbols for the TBM. Simulations in single-user AWGN and multi-user non-coherent multi-antenna fading channels demonstrate strong robustness and interference resilience, establishing TBM as a scalable, algebraically structured modulation-coding scheme bridging tensor representations and modern coding theory.

Computing the Low-Weight codewords of Punctured and Shortened Pre-Transformed polar Codes

In this paper, we present a deterministic algorithm to count the low-weight codewords of punctured and shortened pure and pre-transformed polar codes. The method first evaluates the weight properties of punctured/shortened polar cosets. Then, a method that discards the cosets that have no impact on the computation of the low-weight codewords is introduced. A key advantage of this method is its applicability, regardless of the frozen bit set, puncturing/shortening pattern, or pretransformation. Results confirm the method's efficiency while showing reduced computational complexity compared to stateof-the-art algorithms.

EBP-GEXIT Charts for M-ary AWGN Channel for Generalized LDPC and Turbo Codes

This work proposes a tractable estimation of the maximum a posteriori (MAP) threshold of various families of sparse-graph code ensembles, by using an approximation for the extended belief propagation generalized extrinsic information transfer (EBP-GEXIT) function, first proposed by Measson et al. We consider the transmission over non-binary complex-input additive white Gaussian noise channel and extend the existing results to obtain an expression for the GEXIT function. We estimate the MAP threshold by applying the Maxwell construction to the obtained approximate EBP-GEXIT charts for various families of low-density parity-check (LDPC), generalized LDPC, doubly generalized LDPC, and serially concatenated turbo codes (SC-TC). When codewords of SC-TC are modulated using Gray mapping, we also explore where the spatially-coupled belief propagation (BP) threshold is located with respect to the previously computed MAP threshold. Numerical results indicate that the BP threshold of the spatially-coupled SC-TC does saturate to the MAP threshold obtained via EBP-GEXIT chart.

Iterative Decision Feedback Equalization Using Online Prediction

In this article, a new category of soft-input soft-output (SISO) minimum-mean square error (MMSE) finite-impulse response (FIR) decision feedback equalizers (DFEs) with iteration-wise static filters (i.e. iteration variant) is investigated. It has been recently shown that SISO MMSE DFE with dynamic filters (i.e. time-varying) reaches very attractive operating points for high-data rate applications, when compared to alternative turbo-equalizers of the same category, thanks to sequential estimation of data symbols [1]. However the dependence of filters on the feedback incurs high amount of latency and computational costs, hence SISO MMSE DFEs with static filters provide an attractive alternative for computational complexity-performance trade-off. However, the latter category of receivers faces a fundamental design issue on the estimation of the decision feedback reliability for filter computation. To address this issue, a novel approach to decision feedback reliability estimation through online prediction is proposed and applied for SISO FIR DFE with either a posteriori probability (APP) or expectation propagation (EP) based soft feedback. This novel method for filter computation is shown to improve detection performance compared to previously known alternative methods, and finite-length and asymptotic analysis show that DFE with static filters still remains well-suited for high-spectral efficiency applications.

Iterative Equalization with Decision Feedback based on Expectation Propagation

This paper investigates the design and analysis of minimum mean square error (MMSE) turbo decision feedback equalization (DFE), with expectation propagation (EP), for single carrier modulations. Classical non iterative DFE structures have substantial advantages at high data rates, even compared to turbo linear equalizers - interference cancellers (LE-IC), hence making turbo DFE-IC schemes an attractive solution. In this paper, we derive an iterative DFE-IC, capitalizing on the use of soft feedback based on expectation propagation, along with the use of prior information for improved filtering and interference cancellation. This DFE-IC significantly outperforms exact turbo LE-IC, especially at high spectral efficiency, and also exhibits various advantages and performance improvements over existing variants of DFE-IC. The proposed scheme can also be self-iterated, as done in the recent trend on EP-based equalizers, and it is shown to be an attractive alternative to linear self-iterated receivers. For time-varying (TV) filter equalizers, an efficient matrix inversion scheme is also proposed, considerably reducing the computational complexity relative to existing methods. Using finite-length and asymptotic analysis on a severely selective channel, the proposed DFE-IC is shown to achieve higher rates than known alternatives, with better waterfall thresholds and faster convergence, while keeping a similar computational complexity.

A Framework for Iterative Frequency Domain EP-based Receiver Design

An original expectation propagation (EP) based message passing framework is introduced, wherein transmitted symbols are considered to belong to the multivariate white Gaussian distribution family. This approach allows deriving a novel class of single-tap frequency domain (FD) receivers with a quasi-linear computational complexity in block length, thanks to Fast-Fourier transform (FFT) based implementation. This framework is exposed in detail, through the design of a novel double-loop single-carrier frequency domain equalizer (SC-FDE), where self-iterations of the equalizer with the demapper, and turbo iterations with the decoder, provide numerous combinations for the performance and complexity trade-off. Furthermore, the flexibility of this framework is illustrated with the derivation of an overlap FDE, used for time-varying channel equalization, among others, and with the design of a FD multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) detector, used for spatial multiplexing. Through these different receiver design problems, this framework is shown to improve the mitigation of inter-symbol, inter-block and multi-antenna interferences, compared to alternative single-tap FD structures of previous works. Thanks to finite-length and asymptotic analysis, supported by numerical results, the improvement brought by the proposed structures is assessed, and then completed by also accounting for computational costs.

Improved channel estimation for interference cancellation in random access methods for satellite communications

In the context of satellite communications, random access (RA) methods can significantly increase throughput and reduce latency over the network. The recent RA methods are based on multi-user multiple access transmission at the same time and frequency combined with interference cancellation and iterative decoding at the receiver. Generally, it is assumed that perfect knowledge of the interference is available at the receiver. In practice, the interference term has to be accurately estimated to avoid performance degradation. Several estimation techniques have been proposed lately in the case of superimposed signals. In this paper, we present an improved channel estimation technique that combines estimation using an autocorrelation based method and the Expectation-Maximization algorithm, and uses Pilot Symbol Assisted Modulation to further improve the performance and achieve optimal interference cancellation.

An efficient time domain representation for Single-Carrier Frequency Division Multiple Access

This paper presents a physical model for Single Carrier-Frequency Division Mutliple Access (SC-FDMA). We specifically show that by using mutlirate signal processing we derive a general time domain description of Localised SC-FDMA systems relying on circular convolution. This general model has the advantage of encompassing different implementations with flexible rates as well as additional frequency precoding such as spectral shaping. Based on this time-domain model, we study the Power Spectral Density (PSD) and the Signal to Interference and Noise Ratio (SINR). Different implementations of SC-FDMA are investigated and analytical expressions of both PSD and SINR compared to simulations results.

Secondary Resource Allocation for Opportunistic Spectrum Sharing with IR-HARQ based Primary Users

We propose to address the problem of a secondary resource allocation when a primary Incremental Redundancy Hybrid Automatic Repeat reQuest (IR-HARQ) protocol. The Secondary Users (SUs) intend to use their knowledge of the IR-HARQ protocol to maximize their long-term throughput under a constraint of minimal Primary Users (PUs) throughput. The ACcumulated Mutual Information (ACMI), required to model the primary IR-HARQ protocol, is used to define a Constrained Markov Decision Process (CMDP). The SUs resource allocation is then shown to be a solution of this CMDP. The allocation problem is then considered as an infinite dimensional space linear programming. Solving the dual of this linear programming is similar to solving an unconstrained MDP. A solution is finally given using the Relative Value Iteration (RVI) algorithm.

Multiplicatively Repeated Non-Binary LDPC Codes

We propose non-binary LDPC codes concatenated with multiplicative repetition codes. By multiplicatively repeating the (2,3)-regular non-binary LDPC mother code of rate 1/3, we construct rate-compatible codes of lower rates 1/6, 1/9, 1/12,... Surprisingly, such simple low-rate non-binary LDPC codes outperform the best low-rate binary LDPC codes so far. Moreover, we propose the decoding algorithm for the proposed codes, which can be decoded with almost the same computational complexity as that of the mother code.

Analysis and design of raptor codes for joint decoding using Information Content evolution

In this paper, we present an analytical analysis of the convergence of raptor codes under joint decoding over the binary input additive white noise channel (BIAWGNC), and derive an optimization method. We use Information Content evolution under Gaussian approximation, and focus on a new decoding scheme that proves to be more efficient: the joint decoding of the two code components of the raptor code. In our general model, the classical tandem decoding scheme appears to be a subcase, and thus, the design of LT codes is also possible.
